Mile High Report As always, my thoughts are irrelevant

I have been thinking about the Ohio State situation, the CBA, Free Agency, and Tebow's new book. I decided to share my thoughts with you all. My thoughts are irrelevant, or at least thats what my wife tells me :) As always feel free to follow me on Twitter: @jdforrer if you want to talk sports, or about anything really. I hope you all enjoy.

Mile High Report 7 more irrelevant thoughts

Hello there Bronco's fans, I have more thoughts to share, and this time there is a discalimer.

In thought number 3 I disucss my opinion of the Mendenhall statements, and I have no desire to offend anyone, so feel free to skip that one if you don't want to discuss it. I don't want to come across wrong on the point, I love America and I am very proud of my country. My Brother is a Marine, and 2 of my close friends are Army Special Forces. I feel I clarified that in the post, but I do not agree with Mr. Mendenhall.

Also for anyone here who is religious, please say a Prayer for SSG Ofren Arrechaga's family. He was killed last month in Afghanistan, and his family is dealing with the loss. His wife was a good friend of mine when I was younger and I feel very bad for them. He left behind a wonderful wife and very handsome young son. Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.

God Bless America

Mile High Report Reasons for Optimism

So MHR I haven’t posted in nearly a year, with moving cross country and getting my family settled, and honestly I haven’t known what to say, some weeks I am the Kool-aid drinking optimist, and then turn around and trying to figure out how we lost to an inferior team.

I have had to catch myself many times, because I constantly find myself saying if a certain play hadn’t gone wrong, or a certain penalty hadn’t been called we could be right in the play-off hunt. I don’t like being one of those fans that cry over spilt milk, and consistently play the “what if” game.  That being said, I think there is room for optimism for the future for several reasons.

Mile High Report Franchise tag vs. FA

Okay, I have a couple of questions that just don't add up for me. For players like Peppers, why don't teams tag and trade these players? I mean by letting them enter FA the teams get no compensation, where with a tag and trade, even if you trade Peppers for a 2nd or 3rd you get something, similar to cassel last season. Also why don't more teams trade for proven players?

Mile High Report A controversial Opinion

As the title states this is somewhat controversial but I wonder if we should use our 10th (or 11th) pick on a QB. I know thats not McD's style, and no disrespect to Orton but why I think we might need to follows the break.

Mile High Report Is Jay Cutler better than Kyle Orton?

So, there have been several articles saying that K.O. cannot be a franchise QB. Kreiger said

"The only significant difference between Cutler's stats last year and Orton's this year are the volume numbers. Cutler threw for 4,526 yards. Orton is on a pace to throw for about 3,575, or roughly 1,000 fewer."

Mile High Report Broncos secret weapon for the play-offs?

So I have a theory, please keep in mind it's just that a theory. Peyton Hillis began the season in the Dog house because of some fumbles in the preseason. There may be other factors in practice as well that we don't know about but was virtually irrelevant until last week when he played in junk time. Last season he showed skill at running back and as a receiver from the fullback position, and McDaniels knows this as well.

Regardless of some questionable play calling in a few games McDaniels game planning has been superb, the wild horses in New England is an excellent example, and you have to assume he has a trick or two planned for the play-offs. Perhaps one of those planned tricks is to release Hillis, not as a running back unless injuries force him to because we have Moreno and Buck, but possibly in the fullback receiver position.

Him being in McDaniels doghouse early doesn't mean his talents will be ignored, we saw that with Marshall, who started the season in the dog house, even being benched, yet yesterday set an NFL record for receptions (which would have been way better had we won).

So now that its late in the season, perhaps McD has decided to wait 3 weeks before unleashing Hillis, as it seems likely that we will make the playoffs as a wild card. I don't think the offense will revolve around him in any means, but he could be a huge 3rd down/red zone option that may increase the redzone/3rd down performance.

Again, Just a theory, maybe I am wrong, but what if I am right, how awesome would it be if when we reach the playoffs Hillis can help us win a game or 2? Remember his sudden appearance as a receiver against Miami last year?

Mile High Report 2010 Mock Draft Picks 1-10

It's still pretty early for a Mock Draft, as all the orders could change and of course Free Agency and which players are re-signed has a big impact on which players a particular team will go after, however this is what I expect to date.

1. Cleveland Browns- This is where things stand now, and of course after last night’s upset of the Steelers it is possible they could get out of this spot soon. It has been highly speculated the browns will take a Quarterback however Brady Quinn is starting to look like he should, and given some talent in the wide receiver core he may be the future of this franchise. Mangini however will probably blame the disastrous season on the fact that he did not have his "type" of QB and they will likely select Jimmy Clausen out of Notre Dame with this pick because of his experience, statistics, and the fact that he has already been running a "pro style" Offense. They should select Ndamukong Suh here and build the franchise around one of the best defensive players in recent memory, but they won't, so PICK 1 is Jimmy Clausen, QB, ND

2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Tampa bay has alot of needs, but selecting Ndamukong Suh here is the only choice that will allow this team to begin rebuilding a Dominant team in the near future. If he reaches the second pick look for them to snap him up. Suh is a dominant defensive player who you can build a franchise around. Because Suh is in high demand, this pick might also be traded for several picks to a lower player. PICK 2 is Ndamukong Suh, NT, Nebraska

3. St Louis Rams- St. Louis has to get a Franchise QB this season, as badly as they have played that should be easy. There are a couple picks here, but at the 3rd pick it has to be a QB and Jake Locker is the second highest ranked QB prospect due to Bradford’s injuries this season. Bradford may still end up being an elite QB but his injury will prevent him from going this high. PICK 3 is Jake Locker, QB, Washington

4. Detroit Lions- Regardless of the final result the last draft was a turning point, Matt Stafford will become an elite QB when the other pieces are put together. OL is a possibility but the Lions biggest issue is that they can't stop the run, or the pass. No insult intended, but the Lions need to overhaul the defense. Suh won't be available, so I see them going with a defensive star. Personally I think a DT has to be the choice, and while trading up for Suh isn't impossible, I think that would be a bad choice unless Tampa will take minimal compensation, so the choice would be Gerald McCoy DT from Oklahoma or Russell Okung OT out of Oklahoma State. I still believe the choice should be defense but upper management within the Lions will want to protect Stafford, so the final choice is PICK 4 is Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State

5. Washington Redskins- Washington can go one of two ways, a QB to replace Jason Campbell, or a lineman to protect him. I think Campbell if continues to play at the level he has been then he is kept and someone to protect him will be drafted here. They need a WR, and will address that in later rounds but here at the 5th pick I think the choice has to be Offensive line. After Okung the next logical choice will be Bruce Campbell OT from Maryland. I could see them trading down as well in order to pick up a 1st and second round OT as they need multiple and still have an additional second round pick for WR. PICK 5 is Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland.

6. Kansas City Chiefs- Kansas City has many of the pieces to build a franchise and needs a solid WR which they will get either through FA, or the 2nd or 3rd round. They also need to build a solid defense because to be a contender in the NFL, defense is necessary. The logical pick here is a secondary player, most likely Eric Berry, a Safety out of Tennessee. He has the potential to be a key piece to a defense, and will likely allow the Chiefs the best chance of improving right away. PICK 6 is Eric Berry, S, Tennessee

7. Buffalo Bills- The Bills need a change at the QB position, and I look for whoever takes over the Coaching position in Buffalo will want a QB to build a franchise around. I look for them to take a chance on Bradford here, because he has all the things they look for in a QB. The only reason he drops as low as he does is the shoulder injury, but as it's the only injury in his Career, and assuming he performs well at the combine it is likely he is drafted here. Pick 7 Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma

8. Oakland Raiders- Well given past experience this pick would be the fastest guy on the board, and logically they should take a QB (depending on Russell), or Offensive Line, but as long as Al Davis is calling the shots, look for something illogical as usual, perhaps a Kicker who runs a 4.3 second 40 lol. I'm going to go with Al picking Ryan Mallet and dumping Jamarcus Russell. Pick 8 is Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas

9. Denver Broncos- Thank you Chicago Bears :) The Broncos have alot of choices here. Some people say that we should draft a QB but that won't happen. Kyle Orton has played exceptional and Tom B. will be back next year, perhaps we will draft a QB in a late round but not here. This pick will be Defense. I would like to see eventual replacements for Goodman, Dawkins, and Bailey to join Bruton, Smith, and McBath but those positions are a reach at 9 except perhaps Joe Haden CB for Florida as Goodmans eventually replacement. I would like to see us trade down if the opportunity arises, but if not at this pick my choice would be Rolando McClain ILB to eventually replace Andra Davis who will be 31 soon. Pick 9 is Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama.

10. San Francisco 49ers- The 49ers will look to improve its secondary, and if Denver passes on Joe Haden CB from Florida look for them to take him here. Haden is an excellent CB and will be dominant in the NFL. The 49ers need depth here and the Free Agency market on solid Cornerbacks looks slim. It's possible they will trade down as well if the opportunity arises but if not the pick here will be Haden. Pick 10 is Joe Haden, CB, Florida.

I will start working on 11-20, and post it soon. All comments/opinions are welcome of course!

Mile High Report 2009 Surprising Stars of the Denver Broncos

Okay, at the beginning of the season the stars I expected to emerge were not the ones were seeing now. I am gonna break down a few individuals who have been surprisingly effective on this team.

Offense

Kyle “K.O.” Orton- I definitely thought Kyle Orton would be a managing QB this season. I thought he would be able to manage the game, but would need alot of help from the stars on this offense. 7 weeks into the season, he is affectionately called K.O. (knock out) Kyle by Denver fans as each week he has been able to engineer long 4th quarter drives which prevented opposing offenses the time to attempt a comeback. Orton is on pace for 3900 yards and 24 touchdowns. Orton’s best season in Chicago was only 2900 yards 18 touchdowns. While he is ranked 15th overall currently as a QB, he has something the rest of the QB's above him do not have, less interceptions. To date K.O.'s lone interception came on a hail mary to end a half and as time ran out, was virtually irrelevant.

Knowshon Moreno- I don’t know if "surprising" fits here since he was the first RB picked in the draft, however after the hold out, and the pre-season injury I was concerned it may be mid season before he became a contributor. He is on pace for over a thousand yards after a slow start and leads all rookie running backs. What is interesting is he is sharing time with Correll Buckhalter who is also on pace for a 1000 yard season. The Broncos could potentially have 2 different 1000 yd. rushers in the same season. Last season the leading rusher for Denver was Peyton Hillis with 343.

Brandon Marshall- After all the off season problems like many I wondered if he would be traded. He didn’t know the playbook, threw a hissy fit, and demanded a trade. After a nice Time Out by the coach, and a couple weeks watching from the sidelines he has embraced the offense and exploded into the Brandon Marshall we were hoping for. The McDaniels offense tends to spread the ball to many receivers but even with that, and limited playing time until week 3 Marshall is on pace for 80 catches and 900 yards. But look for a big game coming from him soon as he appears ready to break out.

DEFENSE
Elvis "DOOM" Dumervil - Dumervil has already been a good player for Denver, but it appears Mike Nolan’s 3-4 defense has fit him perfectly. He is the second fastest player in NFL history to reach 10 sacks in a season and leads the league. Even when he hasn't made the sack, he has put constant pressure on opposing Quarterbacks. In addition he has 1 assisted sack, 2 forced fumbles (one of which he recovered) and 23 tackles.

Denver Broncos Secondary- okay maybe lumping four 30 year old guys into one category is unfair, especially considering the talent, but each of these guys are spectacular, and the are even more spectacular as a unit. they have 6 interceptions, the defense as a whole have allowed only 11 points/game, and are a huge reason for Dumervil's success. Opposing quarterbacks have been unable to get a receiver open and therefore allow DOOM time to reach the QB.

There are many other players I could mention, such as Eddie Royal's recent emergence as a special teams star for this unit, or any of the other successful wide receivers but Eddie showed flashes of his special teams prowess and the Wide receiving core was expected to be one of the best in the league.

Until Next week, hopefully I will be telling you what the Broncos need to do to reach 8-0.

Mile High Report Will Denver defense be Flacco's "DOOM"?

Welcome to week 8 of the NFL season. Week 8 finds the Broncos one of only 3 remaining undefeated teams, sharing that distinction with the New Orleans Saints, and the Indianapolis Colts after Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings lost their first game to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Denver faces a very physical Baltimore Ravens team also coming off a bye week. The Ravens have dropped the last 3 games and will come into this game with something to prove, and to try and get back into the division race for the NFC north where they are currently in 3rd. The Broncos are looking to pick up were they left off, and come out of Baltimore with at least a 3 game lead on the San Diego Chargers in the AFC west division race.

This will probably be the most physical game the Broncos have played to date, as the Ravens have one of the most agressive defenses in the NFL. The Ravens also have the 5th highest total offensive yards per game, and are averaging 28 points and almost 400 yards.

The flip side of the picture is that the Ravens have yet to face a defense playing as solid as Denver. Denver comes into this week allowing a league low 11 points a game, and only allowing 260 total yards to opossing teams. Look for "DOOM" to be harassing Ravens QB Joe Flacco and increasing his season sack total. Elvis Dumervil leads the NFL in sacks at 10 and has been a big part of Denvers pash rush. The Ravens have allowed 10 sacks thus far this season, but as was stated before, they haven't played a defense of this caliber to date.

The Ravens have allowed signifigant passing yards this season, and if K.O. Kyle can continue his efficency look for big days from wide recievers Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal, and Jabar Gaffney. Denver's rushing attack has been effective, ranking 7th in the league, but the Ravens are allowing only 91 yards per game on the ground this season, so for Denver to win, they will need some big runs from Moreno and Buckhalter, or this game will be tough.

In my opinion this game is about as evenly matched as it gets. To date McDaniels has been able to game plan very well against opposing teams, and as long as Dawkins is back and healthy look for this game to be close.

Prediction Denver 17, Baltimore 13
