Arnold Harrison Released; Donovan Woods Promoted From Practice Squad
Back-Up Linebacker Arnold Harrison was released today and Donovan Woods was promoted from the practice squad. This is the first move in Coach Tomlin's efforts to try and improve the Steelers' lackluster special teams play.
Its Official: Mendenhall passes Willie atop depth chart
Tomlin says Mendenhall has the hot hand and will continue to start even with Willie healthy (towards bottom of article). Tomlin also says that Reed will most likely be kicking for the Steelers this week.
Andy LaRoche approached about move to 2B
I know there has been a lot of speculation about this topic on this site. This article makes it appear the move could definitely happen and would in preparation for the arrival of Pedro Alvarez.
Pirates to shut down Ross Ohlendorf for the rest of the season
Ohlendorf finishes with 169 2/3 innings pitched, an 11-10 record, 4.03 ERA, and 1.25 WHIP. A pretty good first full season for him.
EDIT: Apparently read the article a little too fast. Looks like they'll let him go til he reaches between 170 and 180 innings, so he'll probably make 1 or 2 more starts.
Pirates claim RP John Meloan off waivers from Rays
Meloan will probably be sent to Indy. Looks like he'll add depth, nothing major.
Steelers sign veteran center Alex Stepanovich
This brings up more questions about the health of Darnell Stapleton. Stepanovich started all 16 games his rookie season in 2004 but has been injured off and on the past 4 seasons.
The entire Ravens team not retiring?
Derrick Mason is apparently ending his short "retirement".
Adam LaRoche may get traded again
Boston is looking to do a three team deal in which they would get Victor Martinez. With that acquisition, the team would get rid of LaRoche because he would no longer have anywhere to play.
Matt Holliday is a St. Louis Cardinal
In my eyes, St. Louis is now the clear favorite to win the NL Central.
Twins sign Mark Grudzielanek
This pretty much puts the Freddy Sanchez to the Twins rumors to bed.
Jason Schmidt is back
Jason Schmidt will make his first start since June of 2007 on Monday for the Dodgers vs the Reds
Zach Duke makes All-Star Game
Zach Duke is making his first appearance as an all-star. He will be replacing Matt Cain who was struck with a line drive last night that hit his pitching arm.
Duke is only 8-8 on the year, but we all know he has gotten about as little run support as one can get. A total of 10 runs have bee scored in his 8 losses.
Duke is also the first Pirates pitcher to make the All-Star game since Mike Williams in 2003
ESPN and the Pirates
I suggest everyone quickly take a look at the front page of espn.com right now. The FOURTH story from the top on the front page says "Pirates players question timing of recent trades" - right here. Once again ESPN wants the rest of the country to think the Pirates have no idea what they are doing. I cannot wait to see Neal turn this ship around by continuing to make trades for high upside players, yet at the same time continue to have the media question his moves. For most of us we can see a faint light at the end of the tunnel and think its coming soon. To the rest of the world, they will continue to think the Pirates will always be bad and will be shocked when they are hopefully contenders down the road.
Nate McLouth traded to Braves
WOW
McLouth has been traded to the braves for three prospects. Shocked.

Tommy Hanson's name is being thrown around apparently so hopefully they got him. I guess this also gives us room to bring up Andrew McCutchen. I sm still a little in shock right now, but we'll have to see what the Buccos got in return.
Cassel traded to Chiefs
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3942130
Its the second trade in the last two days between the Chiefs and the Patriots, with the Chiefs getting Vrabel yesterday. Pioli continues to bring some former Patriots over to try and rebuild the Chiefs. The question is was Cassel so great because of the system the Patriots have or because he's a great QB? He's going to have a great WR in Bowe and if Gonzalez sticks around the best TE possibly in the history of the NFL. A great get for the Chiefs in my opinion.
