5 best running backs of all time
Patrick Micheal at Yahoo put together THIS ARTICLE about the top 5 running backs in NFL history. He has Barry Sanders at number 2, behind Jim Brown. I can live with that. I remember watching Brown play and he was definitely incredible. Barry was, and still is, the man and is highly deserving of the number 2 spot. Emmitt Smith came in at number 3 with Sweetness and Dickerson rounding out the top 5 Rb's. Your thoughts?
Ten things to know right now about the labor situation
A nice article on Pro Football Talk from Mike Florio going over the labor situation and the CBA. Good read.

The Lions May Be the Unluckiest Team Ever
Good things to come next year? I definitely believe so. They'll compete next season, if not make the playoffs and should take the North next or the year after. All the bandwagon guys should stop whining now. It's too early to start calling for a coaches head, a new quarterback or changes in the front office. After 8 terrible, horrible years of "He who shall not be named", there's no way fans should expect a complete turn around in less than two years.
Give it some time, folks. GO Lions!
R.I.P. Sparky Anderson
Former Reds and Tigers manager, Sparky Anderson, has passed away at 76 years of age. Class act. R.I.P., Sparky.
Safety C.C. Brown to Lions
Per John Niyo on Twitter, C.C. Brown's agent says that contract with Lions is done deal.
Ernie Sims to Philly for TE Scheffler and draft pick to Denver
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that a three-way trade will send linebacker Ernie Sims to the Eagles, tight end Tony Scheffler and a 7th rounder from Eagles to the Lions, and a 5th round draft pick to Denver from Philly
Aurgh! The beast that wouldn't die!
I'm actually home on a Monday night and I thought I'd watch the 49er's-Cards game as we face both these teams coming up. I click on the TV and what do I see?! The big, ugly, moronic face of 'he who shall not be named' spewing his incompetence for the world to see. After the fiasco that has been the 2009 season in Detroit, a lot of the blame can be laid at the feet of this idiot, who ran the team into the ground the previous 8 years. It made me stop and think (after I changed the channel) about the new regime in Detroit.
Culpepper to start vs Pittsburgh
According to the NFL network, Daunte Culpepper will start today against Pittsburgh. Stafford's knee is still swollen and will not play.
Ernie Harwell has incurable tumor
I'm not a Tigers fan but always loved listening to Harwell. Our thoughts and prayers go out to one of the greatest voices to ever get behind the mike for a MLB team. God Bless, Ernie.
Lions Hall of Famer Creekmur dead at 82
Hall of Fame offensive lineman Lou Creekmur, who starred on the Detroit Lions’ three NFL championship teams of the 1950s, died Sunday. He was 82.
Lions claimed DE Brian Johnston off waivers on Thursday
Brian was drafted by the Chiefs in the seventh round in 2008.
Stafford a "done deal" (will go #1, contract or not.)
MLive.com and Bleacher Report.com are reporting that the Lions are selecting Matthew Stafford as the #1 pick in Saturdays draft.
NFL.com’s Thomas George was told by a source in the Detroit Lions organization that they select Stafford regardless of whether a deal is in place by the beginning of the draft Saturday at 4 p.m
I can't verify this through any official reports but, for the most part, MLIVE and Bleacher Report are pretty reliable. I expected this and it looks like it's becoming close to official. Simon Wilcott on the NFL network is in Detroit and says that the guaranteed money has been agreed to but how it gets paid out is not. Lions want 3-4 years, Stafford (Condon) want it in two years. Everything should be finalized, or close to it, by draft time tomorrow, if not sooner. Welcome to Detroit, Matthew.
Aaron Curry says will take less money to be a Lion
Aaron Curry had an interview on Sirrius radio yesterday and says he'd take less money than last years #1 pick, Jake Long, to be a Detroit Lion.
This would be a freaking coup. Best player in the draft and they don't have to spend $40 mil to get him. I've been on the Curry bandwagon since day one. The Lions need to get this deal done before the Draft. I just hope it's not posturing to get Stafford to take less money.
Jerry Green hates Mel Kiper as much as I do
Jerry Green from the Detroit News has written a fantastic article extolling on the virtues, knowledge and capabilities of self-proclaimed draft guru, Mel Kiper. He goes on to say that because Mel Kiper picks Stafford at #1, the Lions would be wise to listen.
Fantastic article and funny read. Thanks, Jerry.
Mel Kiper (and Todd McShay) are complete and total idiots. Let them yell at each other and please guys, leave the rest of us out of it. No one except ESPN gives a crap what you think. If you want knowledgeable information, listen to Mike Mayock over at the NFL network.
Off Topic - Thunder over Louisville
Way off topic but every year this impresses the hell out of me more and more. I had to share.
The family and I just got home from watching "Thunder over Louisville" which is the opening night of a two week celebration leading up to the Kentucky Derby. There was an air show all day over the riverfront (living so close to the river, I could watch most of the airshow from my yard). This evening was the Thunder fireworks display. There were over 800,000 people lining the Ohio River on the Kentucky/Indiana border. One hell of a party.
When I moved here 6 years ago I had seen several very large and impressive fireworks shows. Washington DC on July 4th, 1976 (07/04 is my birthday), Disney World on New Years Eave and several others. Folks here told me "you gotta check this out, it will blow your mind". I did and it did.
After more than a decade, the show remains the largest annual pyrotechnic display in North America. Seen by approximately 1-million U.S. Armed Forces, Department of Defense civilian employees and their families stationed in 176 countries and aboard 140 U.S. Navy ships at sea via a July 4th rebroadcast on the American Forces Network, it is the state's pride. A Discovery Channel documentary on fireworks shows says it best, "Thunder is the Grand-daddy of them all!".
This is a phenomenal fireworks show. Check out the link above for the video. The fireworks show this year lasted 28 minutes, synced to music that was blaring out of speakers around the river front. You could also listen to the music on the radio. To give you a scope for how large it is, there are 8 barges on each side of one of the bridges from Indiana to Louisville packed with fireworks. They close the bridge and load it up with fireworks as well. That bridge you see in the video lit up with explosions is almost a mile long. If you ever get the chance and you like fireworks, this is a show you've got to see.
The Lions have reportedly opened negotiations
with Georgia QB Matthew Stafford, Wake Forest LB Aaron Curry and Baylor OT Jason Smith.
Everyone knows I'd prefer Curry overall and have been on that bandwagon from day one. I could handle either Jason Smith or Matthew Stafford (rather have Mark Sanchez, though) at 1-1 but they for sure need to get the pick signed before next Saturday. With the unveiling of the new uniforms on Monday, I kind of hoped they'd announce who they're selecting then. Very good marketing/publicity stunt.
Long time Lions mascot, Dan Baker, passed away. he was 69.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
Pride of Detroit Mock Draft
I had the honor of drafting for the Kansas City Chiefs over in your sister SBN site's, Pride of Detroit, mock draft.
With the Chiefs first pick, I selected Aaron Curry, Linebacker, Wake Forest. You were almost as bad as the Lions last season and really need help on the defensive side of the ball. I believe this was the right pick for the Chiefs.
Go on over to POD and check it out.
Greetings Chief fans and faithful
I'm Jettero2112 and I'm visiting from your SBNation sister site - Pride of Detroit. Sean at POD is holding a mock draft and I asked to play GM for your Chiefs.
I'm guessing here but believe that you folks want Detroit to take Stafford (boo, hiss) and for the Rams to take an OT so you can snag Curry. I could be mistaken but there seems to be a lot of love for Aaron around here, about as much as the faithful over at POD.
I'd like to hear your opinions as to who you folks think the Chiefs should take and why. Any help and/or insight would be greatly appreciated.
Lions sign cornerback Eric King
Lions sign former Tennessee Titan cornerback Eric King. King will add depth to the position as a back-up as well as for help on special teams.
Lions cut 6 from their roster today
Leigh Bodden, CB
Dwight Smith, S
Edwin Mulitalo, G
Mike Furrey, WR
Dan Campbell, TE
Jon Dunn, T
Cedric Saunders promoted
Cedric Saunders has been promoted to Vice President of Football Operations.
How about Cassell?
Rumor has it that the Patriots may not put the franchise tag on quarterback Matt Cassell. I'm not sure if this would be a good move or not. He is a decent player but he took a team from Super Bowl contender to out of the playoffs in one year (grant it, they still had an 11-5 record). he will probably make a ton of money as a free agent and that cash could be better spent on rebuilding the Lions.
The question is how much more or less is a first round QB going to cost than Cassell would? How much time would it be before they would be ready to start? Cassell could step right in and start from day one. Just a thought.
EDIT: Cassell Franchised on 02/05/09. Please Lions, don't try for him. Waste of good picks.Lions hire Titans Matt Burke as LB coach
The Detroit Lions have hired former Titans defensive assistant/quality control coach Matt Burke to be their new Linebackers coach.
Schwartz's ideas on coordinators
ESPN is saying that Jim Schwartz already has a few names in mind for his staff.
For D coord, Jeremy Bates of the Denver Broncos and Brian Schottenheimer of the New York Jets.
For O-coord, Kansas City Chiefs' Gunther Cunningham.
I'm hoping the offense runs the ball more than they have in the past. Like Schwartz has said, "run the ball, stop the run". I hope there are other candidates for both positions. I'd think we'll no more in the next few days.
Sanchez enters the draft
I could see Detroit taking either Aaron Curry or Brian Orapko with the first pick and then taking Sanchez at #20 if he was still available. Still hoping they don’t take Stafford with the #1 pick. He may be the savior but the O-Line and D need a lot more work first.
