Dirks announcement that he would be willing to take a "significant" pay cut next year is part of the Mav's sales pitch to potential free agents. But it begs the question: How much is talking about? If it is a Duncanesque 10 million a year deal, that's a pretty good pitch. But what if he's saying he would sign a 1 yr. veteran's minimum deal in 2014 to attract the right guy? That would put the Mav's in an entirely different position. They would have their franchise FA, Dirk AND the ability to add more than 30 million dollars in FAs in 2014. They would have Dirk's bird rights in 2015 and Cuban could go into the tax to make the lost year up to him. That would be a pretty good pitch.

Do not trade Jay Crowder.

Recently I read a story that detailed a trade that was not made for Josh Smith and one of the players mentioned was Jay Crowder. For various reasons, I don't think it would be wise for the Mavericks to get involved in a trade for a non all-star power forward who wants a max contract, but that's not what this post is about. This post is about a rookie who is playing pretty well for us and that I think is a keeper. I know the Mavs need to make a splash this summer and I know that an asset is an asset. I just hope someone over there remembers that we are trying to ADD good players, not subtract them.

If we could trade OJ Mayo, Chris Kamen, Darren Collison and Dante Jones ($17 million in salaries) for Deron Williams (same), it would cost us 6 wins and add six to Brooklyn's total. Of course that's not the whole story, but it makes me wonder ... did the Mav's dodge a bullet there? Or would you still pull the trigger on Plan A? I'm interested to hear what Mavs fans think about the big fish that got away now.

The offers I have seen for Howard are less than overwhelming. I wonder if a total rebuild is really necessary in Orlando. They have bad contracts, but most will go away in a year or two anyway, when they become valuable expiring contracts. Rookies and draft picks are unproven commodities to rebuild a franchise with. Some expansion teams take 5 years to get around to winning. I wonder if Hennigan could swing a deal with OKC, who is looking at four max contracts next summer...

Look, I know the fear and loathing caused when other teams fans covet your Superstar. But the fact is, once your star has decided to leave, the smart thing to do is to try to do the best damage control and position yourself for a comeback as soon as possible. Now Dwight has stated he would really only consider signing long term with three teams ... The Magic, The Nets and the Mavs, when he becomes a FA. So your trading options are to try to find a rental offer (Houston's, for example) or to trade him to one of those teams. What the Nets could offer has been pretty well disected here. But all I see is the Mavs don't have anything to offer. That's not exactly true.
Odom, Marion, Haywood, Carter, Beaubois, Wright and Pick 17 and $3 Million bucks for Howard and Turkoglu. I would like to see what some magic fans would think. Be kind, I'm a stranger here!

why getting swept proved the Mavs are doing the right thing

Watching the Mavs get swept by a team with three scorers last night, I realized that they did the right thing when they let Chandler and the other guys go to make an attempt to bring in some more scorers this year. All the teams going deep into the playoffs this year have three and the Mavs, with or without those guys, have only one. But that's going to change this summer, one way or the other. Dirk plus two guys who can score and play defense ... and the Mavs are capable of hanging with the elite. Dirk and a lot of overpaid role players and we get one championship every decade or so. So in this time of dark despair, take heart Mavs fans. Help is on the way.

What if the Mavericks DO sign Deron?

If, and it's still a very big if, Deron Williams signs on the dotted line this summer, the Mavericks will have to make a decision about how to structure their roster for the 2012-2013 season. Do they go with a bunch of one year contracts again in hopes that the Magic will implode and Dwight will join DWill in 2013, or is one season of waiting for Superman to come save the day enough? My own feeling is that the current roster with the addition of Deron could be pretty formidable next season and would provide the most cap flexibility going forward. So, let's play a little game of what if. Do you think DWill and the present group would be the best path for the Mavs, or should they look for that third star immediately (assuming they have two)?

Linsanity could be good for the Mavs

I watched the Mavs and Knicks last night and was pretty unhappy to see this rookie who got away playing so well. Even though the Mavs became the latest Lin victim last night, there may be a silver lining to this cloud. How long do you think Deron Williams wants to be that "other" New York point guard? And how quickly would Dwight Howard change his mind about the Nets if Deron goes home to Dallas? 3D, baby!
