Oddsmakers expect Mets to fire Minaya at season's end

14

While Omar Minaya got a vote of confidence from the New York Mets' front office, odds are he won't be back next season as general manager. Internet gambling Web site BetUS.com has posted 1-2 odds that Minaya will be fired before the end of the year. A winning $100 bet would return only a $50 profit plus the initial stake. Wilpon "doesn't want to rock the boat before the end of a doomed season on the off-chance the Mets sneak into the playoffs,'' BetUS spokesman Reed Richards said from the Web site's Costa Rica-based office. "Our bet is they don't make it though, in which case Minaya will likely be gone at some point following the season.'' Minaya has a three-year contract extension that's set to kick in next season. Even so, he's the overwhelming favorite to be the next Major League Baseball general manager to be fired, according to BetUS. Article dated 7/30/09

The New York Mets are like a bunch of cockroaches, scurrying around with no-names and managing to win ball games, even with their manager, Jerry Manuel, on the hot seat and pitcher Oliver Perez alienating an entire clubhouse because he won't take his inept stuff down to the minors to improve his game.

Stephen A Smith analogy is flawless. First, cockroaches do scurry around, they are nameless and they do manage to win ball games. Second, Bay, Wright, Reyes, Santana and Frankie are a bunch of no-names, I mean it's like what, am I playing MLB 2k6? Third, Perez is totally still alienating the entire clubhouse from the DL. I would suggest we do a community FJM on this article, but really Smith isn't worth our time when we can do more productive things like find pictures of dogs to represent players.

I see some blogs get 2,000 comments in their ‘game threads,’ but it’s the same 20 people talking back and forth all night, i.e., 100 comments per person. Instead, there has to be a better way to bring in more people for a more compelling disucssion.

Matt Cerrone isn't proud of AA's gamethreads and wants a more compelling 'disucssion' [sic]

Fun piece by Cistulli where he tries to come up with a stat that rates how interesting/watchable a pitcher is. Seeing as it labels Ollie one of the most unwatchable pitchers in the majors, it passes the first test.

Let me explain why I was going to stop [writing on the internet]: I feel like, at times, sabermetrics can be draining on the love I feel for baseball. Sabermetrics is rooted in cynicism, I think, so there is so often the feeling of "this guy’s overrated" and "this broadcaster sucks" or "Omar Minaya should be murdered" or whatever. And so I was going to stop, maybe for a year, maybe forever, to reinitiate myself into just loving baseball.

Via the very cool. new series why [we] write. This was taking from the Bryan Smith interview and I have to say, I've felt what he describes even without being a writer.
