Wings Perfect when leading after the 1st Period!!??
Seriously!!??,
I was looking on NHL.com after the in-unison slapping of their foreheads by the Sharks while mumbling to themselves "I thought we had this Red Wings team figured out", I noticed the statistic that the our beloved are a Perfect "1.000" when leading after the first period.
The follow-up question needs to be, "How many game have the Wings lead after the first period?"
So digging a little deeper lead me to this STAT , the Wings have lead after the 1st period in 6 of their 16 wins, which equates to about 27% of their games played they are winning in the first. In addition, the Wings are .900 when leading after 2 periods, and in this stat accounts for 9 of their 22 games played so far. So...after 22 games played the Wings have won 56% of their 16 games by the end of the second period. Now any good hockey player(or fan) knows that 3 periods of hockey are needed, especially a good third period...but I have 2 points after looking at these statistics
First, On this blog as well as on other Red Wings blogs, there has been a common discussion that we as fans no longer get that feeling of waiting for doom to happen to our team, even when leading by 2 at the end of the 2nd. It's great to let go of that, even if we only really had to live with that feeling since the last time our boys lifted the cup...other teams ~cough~Maple Leafs ~cough~ have had to deal with that much longer. But we're spoiled, cause we're Wings fans.
My second point being, as I think every word posted to this blog is trying to make, the Red Wings are set to win the Cup again. 40% of our games played have been won in the first two periods. Arguable accounting for near 40-50 points throughout the season. Winning games in the first two periods means rested top lines, rested legs, rested minds, and lots of defensive practice in game situations...ready to pick apart our foes in a classic Red Wings playoff run...with DEFENSE leading to goals
