M's Lose Out on Potential DH Option

The legendary Julio Franco has retired.

Julio Franco, who had been playing in the Mexican League, confirmed that he is retiring from baseball.
Franco was hoping to play in the majors at age 50, but he didn't help the Mets or Braves last season and there was no interest in him entering 2008. Franco finishes his career with a .298/.365/.417 line, 173 homers and 281 steals in 23 seasons over a 26-year span. Had any team believed him in the late 90s, he could have gotten to 3,000 hits. Still, that wouldn't have made him a Hall of Famer. He was a three-time All-Star, but he lacked defensive value even in his days as a second baseman, he never finished higher than ninth in his league in OPS and he never drove in 100 runs in a season.

Bloomquist gets bigger role

Willie Bloomquist will assume Morse's former role in the right-field platoon with Brad Wilkerson, Mariners manager John McLaren said.

That means that Bloomquist will start against left-handed pitchers, which the Mariners will face the next two nights (Baltimore's Adam Loewen and Oakland's Dana Eveland).

"They haven't really said anything to me as far as that," Bloomquist said. "I guess I've been around long enough to kind of assume that's what they're going to do. Or at least to be ready for it."

If this is how Al Reyes celebrates his 38th birthday -- spitting blood and spinning his arms about as if they were windmills--, then I hope I'll be invited to his 40th. That one will be of legend.

"The bouncers tried to control Reyes, but the 6 foot 1, 230-pound right-hander kept pushing them away. A Tampa Police officer working extra duty at the bar tried to calm the fracas, but Reyes "continued spitting blood and thrashing about," Tampa Police Lt. William Ferguson wrote in the release.

"Moments later, the officer Tased Reyes, knocking him to the bar floor. Ignoring police commands to stay down, authorities said Reyes got up and was Tased a second time."

Traded to the Cubs for Rob Bowen and a minor league pitcher. I wonder how much the A's are going to pay for the remainder of his salary?

Kurt Suzuki will now probably be the A's starting catcher. I know this isn't going to happen, but I would love it if Suzuki has "Kurt" written on the back of his jersey.

"Mariners designated LHP Jake Woods for assignment.

"The Mariners could have just optioned him down again. Instead, it looks like he'll go on waivers, which is how Seattle got him from the Angels prior to the 2006 season. Odds are that someone will grab him. He's been quite a disappointment this year, but he's a viable living, breathing left-hander."
