Standings Watch: The top of the Southeast Division is getting packed

The top three teams in the Southeast Division are now each one point apart from the next team down, with the Lightning not far behind. This tight seeding along with the tightness between seventh and tenth place in the Eastern Conference has made leading the division paramount for Southeast teams.

Anaheim Ducks at Florida Panthers - Game 58 Preview

The Panthers lost another two games in a row this week, one to the Washington Capitals, but the story of the day is not the Capitals' loss yesterday preserving the Cats' two point lead. Today will be game 613 for Stephen Weiss, tying him for the franchise lead with Radek Dvorak.

Washington Capitals at Florida Panthers - Game 57 Preview

The Panthers hold the Southeast Division lead by four points as the second place Washington Capitals make their final visit to Sunrise this season. The Panthers need a win tonight to keep their distance from the Capitals while the Capitals need the win not only to catch up to the Leafs and Panthers, but to stay ahead of the Winnipeg Jets, who are one point back in tenth place.

Ottawa Senators at Florida Panthers - Game 56 Preview

The Ottawa Senators visit South Florida for the first time this season. The Panthers are coming in hot off back-to-back wins in New Jersey and Long Island last weekend, while the Sens shut out the Lightning 4-0 last night in Tampa.

Florida Panthers at New York Islanders - Game 55 Preview

The Panthers make their second afternoon start of the weekend on Long Island today. The Cats' win yesterday gave them a two point lead over the Capitals in the Southeast Division and with the Capitals playing a hot Rangers team today, the Panthers have a good opportunity to extend that lead.

Florida Panthers at New Jersey Devils - Game 54 Preview

This afternoon is the last game of the season against Pete DeBoer's New Jersey Devils. The Panthers won the first matchup and have lost the last two. The Panthers reclaimed first in the Southeast Division by virtue of a game on hand on the Capitals, but they need to string some wins together to lock the division lead.

Panthers play solid game, beat Kings 3-1

If it wasn't for a late breakdown in the neutral zone by the first line, Scott Clemmensen would likely have picked up his second shutout of the season. As it was, the Panthers played a solid if unspectacular game and picked up a much needed win.

Los Angeles Kings at Florida Panthers - Game 53 Preview

The Panthers find themselves in a familiar position tonight: looking up at a playoff spot. What is unfamiliar, perhaps, is that they are two points out with 30 games left in the season.

Florida Panthers at Washington Capitals - Game 52 Preview

The battle for the Southeast Division continues tonight as the Panthers take on the Capitals in Washington tonight. The teams are once again only a point apart in the standings and the winner of tonight's game will hold the lead in the division tomorrow and the loser will be sitting in ninth place in the Eastern Conference.

Florida Panthers at Tampa Bay Lightning - Game 51 Preview

Tonight is the last game of the season between the Panthers and Lightning. The Panthers have pretty much owned the Lightning since the Cats came into the league, but this season marks the first season since 2007-08 that the Panthers haven't won the season series.

Winnipeg Jets at Florida Panthers - Game 50 Preview

The Winnipeg Jets visit Sunrise in the second of three Southeast Division games for the Panthers this week. The top of the division is tight, with only three points separating first place Florida from third place Winnipeg.

Washington Capitals at Florida Panthers - Game 49 Preview

The Panthers woke up out of a playoff spot for the first time in a long time as the Capitals have passed them by for the division lead. Two points will put the Panthers back in the division lead, and the Panthers just happen to be playing those same Capitals tonight.

Philadelphia Flyers at Florida Panthers - Game 48 Preview

The Flyers visit Sunrise in the final game before the All-Star Break. The Panthers will be without the services of Dmitry Kulikov, injured in Saturday's game against Winnipeg, while the Flyers will be without Danny Briere, who received a concussion in Sunday's game against the Bruins.

Florida Panthers at Winnipeg Jets - Game 47 Preview

The Panthers visit Winnipeg tonight for an important division game. The Cats are mired in a slump that has seen them give up an eight point division lead to sit tied with the Capitals and three points ahead of the Jets.

Florida Panthers at Chicago Blackhawks - Game 46 Preview

It's a homecoming of sorts for many Cats tonight as the Panthers visit the United Center in Chicago. But it's all business as the Panthers need some points to get themselves separated from the teams in the middle of the Eastern Conference standings.

Florida Panthers at Colorado Avalanche - Game 45 Preview

Florida: 21-14-9 (51PTS) Colorado: 24-21-2 (50PTS) Game Time: 9:30 PM EST Television: Fox Sports Florida, Altitude Radio: 560 WQAM The Panthers visit Colorado tonight. The Avs have been uneven,...

Boston Bruins at Florida Panthers - Game 44 Preview

The Cats handed the Bruins a rare home loss at the beginning of December, but the Bruins utterly destroyed the Panthers 8-0 right before Christmas and the Cats still haven't recovered. Tonight is a good chance for them to prove the beginning of the season wasn't a fluke.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Florida Panthers - Game 43 Preview

A battered Panthers squad takes on a battered Penguins squad tonight in Sunrise. The Pens are on a six game losing streak, but are never an opponent to be taken lightly, even with two of their best players out of the lineup.

Vancouver Canucks at Florida Panthers - Game 42 Preview

Some old friends visit Sunrise tonight with the Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks are first in the Western Conference and one point behind the league leading Rangers, while the Panthers have seen their eight point division lead shrink to three.

Florida Panthers at New Jersey Devils - Game 41 Preview

Tonight the Panthers visit New Jersey for their third game against Pete DeBoer's Devils. The season series has been interesting so far, with Patrik Elias complaining about his team's loss in the first game to what he considered a "one line team" and the Devils coming back from a 2 goal deficit in the second game to win in the shootout, with Elias scoring the game clinching goal.

Florida Panthers at New York Rangers - Game 40 Preview

The Panthers play their final game of the season against the New York Rangers tonight and the first between the two clubs since the ugly high sticking/sucker punch incident between Tomas Kopecky and Ranger forwards Michael Del Zotto and Mike Rupp.

Panthers sign center John Madden

The Florida Panthers announced they have signed former New Jersey Devils center John Madden. No details have officially been announced, though rumor is that it's a one-year contract, which is what would be expected.

Montreal Canadiens at Florida Panthers - Game 39 Preview

Tonight is many Panthers' fans least favorite night of the season: the New Year's Eve game against the Canadiens. Every game against the Habs provides an invasion of their fans, but the New Year's Eve game is always the worst, as the BankAtlantic Centre is transformed into Bell Centre South.

New York Rangers at Florida Panthers - Game 38 Preview

The Rangers make their annual New Year's week visit tonight as a warm-up for the Winter Classic on Monday. The Cats were embarrassed on their last visit to Madison Square Garden on their last visit and will likely have that in their minds tonight.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Florida Panthers - Game 37 Preview

The holiday break is over and it's time for a decimated Panthers squad to return to action. The last couple of weeks were a killer for the Cats and this week is going to be equally rough if they don't get some of their injured players back quickly.

Florida Panthers at Boston Bruins - Game 36 Preview

The Panthers' two-game road trip this week is turning into a serious test of their mettle. The trip features back-to-back games against two teams that will be in the Panthers' new conference next season, and the Panthers are playing with seven forwards out.

Florida Panthers at Ottawa Senators - Game 35 Preview

The Panthers are on a quick pre-Christmas two-game road trip, playing against two teams that will be in the Panthers' new conference starting next season: the Ottawa Senators and Boston Bruins. The Panthers have not been good against the Senators, losing all four games last season and the lone game they've played this season.

Phoenix Coyotes at Florida Panthers - Game 34 Preview

Tonight's matchup features two teams that have done what everyone said they couldn't. Last season, with their ownership situation in doubt, the Coyotes made the playoffs. This season, though picked to be at the bottom of the league, both teams are in or close to playoff spots.

Carolina Hurricanes at Florida Panthers - Game 33 Preview

Today's game, the second of six between the Panthers and Hurricanes, features the top and bottom teams in the Southeast Division. But, as always, underestimating an opponent is a great way for teams at the top of the standings to lose games to those at the bottom.

Former Panthers coach Jacques Martin fired in Montreal

Former Florida Panthers head coach and general manager Jacques Martin was "relieved of his coaching duties" by the Montreal Canadiens today and assistant coach Randy Cunneyworth named interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Martin left the Panthers in 2009 to take his dream job of coaching the Canadiens.
