BFTB After Dark: May 31, 2012
I was going to bitch at you guys about the lack of FanPosts at BFTB lately, but then I realized that there's not a ton of me to write about so there is probably not a ton for you guys to write about. Still, if you have anything you want to shout to the heavens about the San Diego Chargers....now would be the time to do it. Click here to get started on your FanPost and if it's good it'll make it to the front page (or at least will get a link in one of these After Dark posts).
The Chargers news of the day is predictable. Melvin Ingram and Kendall Reyes are "fast" and are picking things up quickly. Also, Philip Rivers doesn't hate them. Celebrate good times, come on!

BFTB After Dark: May 30, 2012
Since I spent today shuttling between the doctor's office and being buried under a pile of work, while fighting an impending cold, there wasn't much in the way of posts here at BFTB. That's okay, I found some stuff to link to below anyway.
The only news coming out of Chargers Park today is that Larry English is participating in the OTAs, albeit with the second team. Oh, also, Brian Banks has been in contact with the San Diego Chargers but there is no tryout scheduled and it sounds like the team has no interest. Other teams, however, do and Banks has a good fallback plan in college football.

The San Diego Chargers OTAs started today. The whole gang was there, including Larry English keeping his spot on the sideline warm with a groin strain.
As you can see from the picture above, Melvin Ingram was there and wearing long sleeves. I love seeing that. That, to me, says that Ingram was looking at the OTA as more of a workout that he should be painfully working his way through instead of fun and games. All business on Day 1. Good to see.
I almost forgot that Mario Henderson looks like an evil pirate from a Disney film. I think it's the big mouth in the not-so-big head. He's like a full-sized Beetlejuice. Maybe it's the beard. Whatever, I don't mind. I like my offensive linemen ugly.

San Diego Chargers Sign 3 Players, Complete Offseason Roster
Big news today as the San Diego Chargers have signed three guys that you've never heard of. They each have a 0.2% chance of making the team.
#Chargers announced the signing of S Corey Lynch, OT Phil Trautwein, and P Robert Malone.
— NationalFootballPost (@FootballPost) May 29, 2012
By my count, the Chargers now have 91 players on their roster. This, of course, means that I'm wrong or that someone is about to be released because NFL teams are only allowed to carry 90 players on their offseason roster. Either way, they're filled up and these three guys are most likely the last signings the Chargers will have for the next three months.
Corey Lynch, who is married to evangelist Billy Graham's granddaughter, played under Rich Bisaccia in Tampa Bay in 2009. If he has a chance to do anything here, it's play special teams.
Phil Trautwein was an two-time All-SEC Tackle and two-time BCS Champion with the Florida Gators. He seems like a big, smart guy and could be an excellent project Tackle to keep on the practice squad in 2012.
Robert Malone, a teammate of Ryan Mathews' at Fresno State, will get a chance in the preseason to show that he can be a starter for another team in the NFL.
Brian Banks Not Guilty of Rape, Still Hoping to Play for NFL's Chargers After 10-Year Ordeal
Found this on Darren Smith's Facebook page. I totally agree when Darren says "Chargers are crazy if they don't give this guy a shot. Nothing to lose here but a few weeks of hotel bills."
Who Is Most Responsible for the San Diego Chargers Success in 2012?
I was talking to a BFTBer last night and he asked me, point blank, if the San Diego Chargers are going to be good in 2012. I knew what he meant, were they going to be better? Were they going to make the playoffs? Would they have a chance at the Super Bowl?
I thought about it for a second, explained to him that I don't think A.J. Smith and the Chargers' front office could've possibly done a better job in the offseason than what they did, and then said "We'll see. It's up to David Chao, I guess." That was my snarky way of saying that the biggest thing standing in the Bolts' way was health.
A minute later, I changed my tune a little bit. "It's not all up to Chao. Ryan Mathews needs to have a big year. Ingram needs to be good. The offensive line needs to play to their potential." I drifted off, realizing that a lot of things had to go right for the Chargers to be considered championship contenders this season. I finally settled on "The most important person for the Chargers this year is John Pagano, who is also the biggest question mark. If he can be half of what his brother was as a Defensive Coordinator, the Chargers will be championship contenders. I think. Maybe."
Anyway, my indecision has lead me to use one of my lifelines and poll the audience (that's you!). Have at it.

So the NFL Players' Association filed a lawsuit against the NFL today on grounds that the owners colluded to have a secret salary cap in 2010 (which was supposed to be an uncapped year). The NFL seems to have protected themselves from this exact lawsuit in the current CBA, but I guess the NFLPA is claiming that the punishments dished out to the Redskins and Cowboys proves that this collusion actually happened.
Either way, I'm not smart enough to figure out the entire situation or even write about it intelligently. Jim Trotter, however, is. Here's how he laid it out.

NFL Players Would Support Gay Teammate
Outsports, which is apparently a part of SB Nation now, posted an article today about the reaction of current and former NFL players when asked about the possibility of there one day being an openly-gay NFL player. Some of the quotes might surprise you.
"In the game of football, it's like a war out there," Jevon Kearse said. "Once you get out on the field, all that stuff is to the side. You're on my side. I played in the NFL for 11 years, I'm sure there were at least one or two guys along the line that were gay."
His former Titans teammate Eddie George, who averaged over 1,100 rushing yards a season for his career, agreed.
"I just don't care about that," George said. "If that's what you do, that's what you do. I don't hate you because of it or dislike you because of it. That's not my personal preference, but I respect your decision. I'm not going to like you less or not be your friend because of that."
America, and the NFL, is eventually going to get past its closed-minded view on homosexuality (relatively) the same way it eventually worked past civil rights issues (relatively). Instead of me explaining what I mean, let's see the beginnings of it with Ahman Green (continued after the jump because it's fairly long)...

A Run-Down of 2012 NFL Rule Changes
It's that time of the year again, when the NFL bigwigs get together and try and improve the game of professional football with rules and mandates. You may have already heard about some of these, but here's the entire list of changes.
- All players are required to wear knee and thigh pads starting in 2013. (The player's complaining that these pads will slow them down realize that it would also slow down the opposing team too, right?)
- The NFL Trade Deadline has been moved from Week 6 to Week 8. (More trades! Awesome.)
- One "marquee" player will be allowed to return from the Injured Reserve list and practice with the team after the sixth game. He will be allowed to return to game action after the eighth game. (Basically, they've made it easier to use the regular-season PUP list)

A Q&A with Chargers safety Brandon Taylor - Scott Bair
Brandon Taylor is an interesting guy.He has eight siblings, including a twin sister, and two screws that were once surgically added to his foot. He has a brother already playing in the NFL, and is a prominent figure in his own right in his home state of Louisiana.
Peyton Manning (and Tom Moore)’s Indianapolis Colts Offense: How a Handful of Plays Led to a Decade of Success - Chris
For thirteen seasons — spanning three head coaches, two Super Bowl appearances, one Super Bowl victory, four NFL MVP awards, and countless incredible games — Peyton Manning led the Indianapolis Colts. In eleven of those seasons, the Colts won at least ten games, including for nine straight seasons, not counting 2011′s disastrous Peyton-less year. But now Manning is a Bronco, in a new town, playing for a new team, and in a (somewhat) new scheme.
Chargers players call required pads 'ridiculous' | UTSanDiego.com
"It's dumb," Jammer said. "Ridiculous to me. I don't think anybody should be required to wear (them). I don't get hit, so I don't need to worry about pads. Offensive players should wear them because we hit them, but I don't think it should be mandatory.
Candidates tackle Chargers stadium funding | UTSanDiego.com
Listen to San Diego’s four major mayoral candidates and you might say the odds of a new Chargers stadium are getting longer. But look at history and you might say the candidates’ noses are. I’m not calling them liars. I’m suggesting that positions have a way of evolving on this issue.
CHARGERS: New receivers build rapport with Rivers : North County Times - Californian
There may be no better combo to demonstrate that point than Rivers and tight end Antonio Gates. The two seem to share a brain when it comes to playing catch. Meachem believes he can reach that level with Rivers as the offseason progresses.
That wasn't so hard. Maybe I should fire Richard.

The San Diego Chargers and LaDainian Tomlinson: A Match Made in Heaven?
First, a confession. LaDainian Tomlinson is probably my favorite football player, or was. I don't know how to put it without sounding gushing, but LT came along right as I was starting to lose it as a football fan (I didn't start following the Chargers until 1998). Getting him and Drew Brees, the two guys that were so much fun to watch in college that I actually watched college football for a year, we like a dream come true. Watching him go on to have the career he had in San Diego was even better.
Second, I already kinda wrote this post. Here's what I wrote just four months ago:
People think with their heart more than their brain most of the time. Tomlinson was not well liked in the locker room, he can barely be called a running back anymore, he's expensive and he dislikes both Norv Turner and A.J. Smith. I know he is the favorite player of a lot of Chargers fans, but so was Kellen Winslow Sr. That doesn't mean Winslow show be signed this offseason to replace Randy McMichael.
The Chargers should not, and will not, bring back Tomlinson. He'll either hook on with some team and hope to not get cut in training camp (Jerry Rice with the Broncos, anyone?), or he'll call it a career. I hope, once he does that, the Chargers sign him to a one day contract so that he can retire where he started. However, any contract longer than 24 hours should be kept away from him.
Many people agreed with me when I wrote that post. Then, a few things changed. Have I changed my stance? Have you?

The SB Nation Studios crew continues to do a great job, this time letting NFL rookies interview each other.
BFTB After Dark: May 21, 2012
The San Diego Chargers offseason is the epitome of boring. Even when lots of rookies were going up to Los Angeles and goofing around with kids, the Chargers rookies were nowhere to be found. As usual, it's all business with the Bolts and the hyperbole is right on schedule.
The Chargers are still a team of "if"s. if Jarret Johnson can become a leader in one offseason, it will be a boost. If Corey Liuget was used incorrectly last year and if he's used correctly this year, it will help. If Melvin Ingram can be Von Miller Part Deux, the defense will be greatly improved. If Philip Rivers can keep from a "slump" and if Antonio Gates can stay healthy and if Ryan Mathews can continue to progress, the offseason will be unstoppable.
If David Chao can keep the team from falling apart, the things above are all possibilities. Heck, anything's a possibility. If you aren't yawning by now, you should be. However, it's better this type of offseason than one filled with legal issues for the players or a lockout or Tim Tebow vs. Mark Sanchez, right?

I toyed with a crazy idea for the Chargers 5K today. You see, when I ran it last year, I was very hungover (read: still very drunk). Minutes before the race began, I was in the porta-potties throwing up. Minutes after the race finished, I was in the bathrooms at Qualcomm Stadium throwing up. It was a terrible way to run a race, but it makes for a ridiculous story and I'm all about those.
I thought about trying to assemble a team that would go out the night before and get hammered. Shots, beers, mixed drinks, the whole nine yards. Running a 5K when you're wasted the next day is a terribly lonely and embarrassing feeling. Doing the same thing with a group of people that feel the same way and are laughing about stuff from the night before? Probably more entertaining.
Anyway, no. We're not doing that. I almost died last time. Those hills are no joke. Start training.

Chargers 5k: Let the Training Begin!
Since last year's race was such a success, the San Diego Chargers are again doing a 5K race from Chargers Park to the 50 yard line of Qualcomm Stadium. Registration for the event is $35 until June 16th, when it goes up to $40.
The "Bolt to the Q" in 2011 was a way to raise money for Marcus McNeill's "Mack's Miracles" foundation last year, but this year the proceeds will go towards the Trish & Ryan Mathews Door of Hope Chest. The T&RMDoHC (not a real acronym) is a foundation that helps homeless mothers and their children get back on their feet after they successfully graduate from the Salvation Army's one-year Door of Hope program.
In addition to the 5K race, there will also be a 1K "fun run" held for children that are at least 7 years old. Early registration for that is $15.

Rolando McClain, the Middle Linebacker of the Oakland Raiders and one of their defense's bright stars, held a man at gunpoint last year in Alabama after attending his grandmother's funeral. That's a no-no, and McClain has been sentenced to serve 180 days in jail.
Some people, including Raiders fans, are assuming that this means that McClain will be in a cell starting today for the next six months, which surprisingly shows a lack of knowledge about the U.S. Justice System by Raiders fans. As Bill Williamson pointed out, McClain's lawyers will fight and appeal until they can get his sentenced served during the offseason (January-July). It's called "massaging the system", and McClain has the money to pay for lawyers that know exactly how to do it.
Roger Goodell seems like he won't be taking action until the courts tell him to as it pertains to McClain. That could mean that today's sentencing is enough for Roger to finally lay out a suspension for Rolando, or it could mean that the suspension will wait until McClain is actually behind bars.

I know what you're thinking. "Where have the video posts gone?" "Why is BFTB so dead these days?" Well, in case you haven't noticed, most of the blogging that happens here and most the videos that were made were reactionary. Something happens, we break it down. Sometimes you get to see my face.
This part of the year is a bit of a deadzone for the NFL. The rookies did their camp and are at home studying their playbooks. The vets are staying in shape. The rosters aren't changing much (although the Chargers did release a Tackle I've never heard of today). There's not much to react to.
Enjoy the quiet. Relax a bit. Watch the NBA or NHL Playoffs. Read up on the potential new owners of the San Diego Padres, or root for whatever baseball team you like best. We'll be churning out posts like their donuts at a Krispy Kreme soon. Until then, we'll try our best to keep the noises we make to a minimum or at least make them interesting. Deal?

The other day, I was thinking about all the hype that Melvin Ingram has been getting from the sports media. He's essentially been dubbed "The next Von Miller" and producing anything less than what Miller did in 2012 (which was amazing for a rookie) will probably be viewed as a disappointment for some.
"The only thing he's missing is the big hipster glasses that probably don't have lenses in them, which totally appeals to white people and lets them know that he's not a thug at all," I thought to myself. Welp, look who has a new Twitter avatar. Good job, Melvin.
By the way, we're on the lookout for a freelance Photoshopper/MS Paint expert to fill an unpaid position that involves nothing but producing drawings of Melvin Ingram living his life with freakishly short arms. Show him unsuccessfully trying to brush his teeth, or trying to give someone a high five.....you get the picture. Applications should be submitted in the comment section.

ESPN: San Diego Chargers Need Defensive Line Help
ESPN has listed off each team's "biggest needs" following the 2012 NFL Draft and Free Agency. For the San Diego Chargers, it's good news and bad news. The good news is that, in picking the defensive line, it proves the Chargers roster is strong at every position. The bad news is that they might be right about the defensive line.
Here's the ESPN Insider article I'm talking about, and here's a chunk of what was written by Tom Gower:
If Liuget shows off the skills that made him a first-rounder, Castillo plays to his pre-injury form and Reyes has a better rookie year than Liuget did, this could be a much-improved group. However, that is an awful lot of ifs.
Let's tackle these statements one at a time.
- "If Liuget shows off the skills that made him a first-rounder" - There's no reason to think that Corey Liuget won't have a fine 2nd season. One of the main reasons Greg Manusky was fired was his mishandling of Liuget's skills. Liuget got better as the season went along (According to ProFootballFocus, 4 of Liuget's 5 best games came in the last 6 weeks of the season). Most 3-4 defensive linemen don't start producing until their 2nd season. Everything points to this "if" happening.
- "Castillo plays to his pre-injury form" - Again, I don't know why Luis Castillo wouldn't be able to handle this. He returned from major injuries in 2006 and 2007 to be a very good player from 2008-2010 (averaging 15 games played per season). Despite the fact that he's seemingly been with the Chargers forever, don't forget that Castillo is just 28 years old and will be 29 by time the season starts. There should be plenty of gas left in his tank.
- "Reyes has a better rookie year than Liuget did" - This one seems the silliest to me. Corey Liuget was by no means a bad player in 2011. Gower says that Corey "rarely made an impact" and that the team had hoped for more from their rookie DE last year. I'll agree with that, but Kendall Reyes isn't expected to start and therefore would probably make the team happy if he could produce consistently like Liuget did last year. The team isn't going to pin their hopes on their 4th best DE being an impact player in his rookie season, nor do think they need him to.
Now, all of that being said....Gower is still sort of right. If Liuget, Castillo and Reyes were to play poorly, the defensive line would suffer. They're key parts of John Pagano's plan to stop the run and push the pocket. However, expecting anything less from Liuget and Castillo than what they've been able to do in the past seems awfully pessimistic.

Not a ton of San Diego Chargers news today, but the team did sign an undrafted free agent (CB Arthur Hobbs) and a former Chiefs practice squad player (DT Garrett Brown). Hobbs is a San Diegan, which is probably a big reason he was signed. Both guys should be viewed as camp fodder until they prove otherwise.

San Diego Chargers Sign SS Brandon Taylor to Four-Year Deal

Chargers are just fifth team in NFL to have all their picks signed.Baltimore, Carolina, NY Giants and Seattle are the others.

I can't tell you how many tweets and e-mails I've gotten over the last week asking me why Brandon Taylor hadn't been signed yet. Wait, yes I can: Entirely too many. I didn't answer any of them, but if I had I would've said "Because he doesn't need to be signed yet." Who cares, really, if he signed last week or this week or next week? It's not like he wasn't going to make it to training camp on time. That's a thing of the past, and didn't normally happen with 3rd round picks anyway.
Brandon Taylor is expected to compete for the starting Strong Safety position and probably has the inside track over veteran SS Atari Bigby.

The Junior Seau Memorial event at Qualcomm Stadium is tonight. Once it starts (6:30pm PT), you should be able to stream the entire event here. Here are some more details:
The San Diego Chargers will host a Celebration of Life in honor of Chargers linebacker and San Diego community icon Junior Seau on Friday, May 11 at 6:30 pm at Qualcomm Stadium. The ceremony is open to the public and parking and admission are free. The Celebration of Life will allow San Diegans to join in a community-wide tribute to their native son who passed away on Wednesday, May 2.

Around the AFC West: Drayton Florence, Darrius Heyward-Bey and more
Denver Broncos
After visiting with the Tennessee Titans, and with word that the San Diego Chargers were interested, CB Drayton Florence has decided to sign with the Broncos. They've agreed on a two-year deal, potentially worth $4.5 million (which is a bargain).
Denver had signed free agent CB Tracy Porter to a one-year deal earlier in the offseason, so Florence will most likely work as the team's nickel CB and be ready to start in case of injury.
Oakland Raiders
Darius Heyward-Bey, who showed signs last season of finally filling his potential as a former first round draft pick, has been charged with a DUI after being arrested on the Bay Bridge over a month ago. It's not the end of the world, by any means, but it's a step backwards during an offseason when the team needed the WR to continue to make strides forward.
By the way, you should check out DHB's contract at some point. Specifically, the $21+ million that was paid in base salary to him in 2010. Then wonder about how the Redskins and Cowboys got punished for spending during the non-cap season and how the Raiders escaped a similar fate.
San Diego Chargers Sign Rookie TE Ladarius Green to Four-Year Contract
Early this morning comes the news that the San Diego Chargers have signed another member of their draft class, Tight End Ladarius Green, to a four-year contract.
Green is a two-time Mackey Award semifinalist, given to the best Tight End in college, and is known for his soft hands, good route-running and size. At 6'6", he's the third tallest player on San Diego's roster behind Mario Henderson and Jared Gaither (Fun note: The Chargers signed an undrafted free agent Punter from Rice named Kyle Martens, and he is also 6'6").
Expect Green to be used along with Antonio Gates and Dante Rosario in red zone situations this season, where the team has struggled to get the ball int he end zone by way of passing.
The only unsigned members of the draft class are now Brandon Taylor (who will probably need special clauses in case he becomes the starter in Week 1), Johnnie Troutman (who will probably miss the entire 2012 season, so there's no rush), and Edwin Baker. As we've stated before, the new Collective Bargaining Agreement eliminates almost all the things that agents and teams used to fight over during these negotiations, so you can expect at least Taylor and Baker to be signed within the week.

Yeah, there wasn't much in the way of posts today. In my defense, almost nothing happened in the Chargersphere.
We got the details of Ingram's contract, which are pretty much the exact details from Liuget's contract last year (read: cheap!). That's...exciting?
There's a Junior Seau memorial thing on Friday at Qualcomm Stadium, formerly Snapdragon Stadium (formerly Qualcomm Stadium). The team is saying that they're expecting a capacity crowd (60,000+), but I have no idea what they're basing that off of. They're not selling tickets or anything. They're basing that off of their own expectations, I guess. Would love to know how close that comes to being right.
To answer the question I've been getting the last few days, I won't be attending the memorial. There will be lots of good speeches given by former players and Junior's pastor and a bunch of people that I don't care to listen to. I'm sure lots of people will enjoy it, but it's just not for me. If you go and want to write a FanPost about the event (and the tailgating beforehand), I'll probably publish it to the front page.

I'm always surprised by the lack of crossover in fans of the San Diego Chargers and Padres. Sure, there's a lot of people that are fans of both, but in most other towns it'd be damn near 100% crossover. In San Diego, it feels closer to half of that.
I'm not really sure why it's like that. My best guess is that most San Diegans will put out the effort for the Chargers, who go into each season with a team full of stars (Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates, etc.) and potential to make the playoffs, but not the Padres, who seemingly haven't gone into a single season with confidence that they could make it to the World Series in the last decade.
I don't think Chargers fans realize how good they have it in that regard. They don't remember what it feels like to have no hope before, or even immediately after, Week 1. That's how Browns fans have been for a while now.
Here's to hoping that the Padres figure out how to start winning sometime soon and the increase in cross-over fans leads to more and better cross-over promotions.

Chargers Agree to Terms with OLB Melvin Ingram, C David Molk
The agreements between the San Diego Chargers and their 2012 NFL Draft class are coming fast and furious now.
Melvin Ingram and Kendall Reyes have agreed to terms on four-year contracts. Ingram has fifth-year option. David Molk signed four-year deal.
— Christopher Smith (@SDchargersdude) May 8, 2012
So now the Chargers have signed their selections from rounds 1 and 2, as well as their first selection in the 7th round. I have no idea if the fifth year option on Ingram's contract is his own, or the team's option, or something that kicks in when he plays a certain amount of games...but I suppose that's something we can worry about in a year or two instead of right now.
Now, all we need to concern ourselves with is that these guys are here and ready to get to work. With Travis LaBoy being released yesterday, Ingram can start preparing to be Jarret Johnson's backup in Week 1 and David Molk can begin honing his craft to hopefully earn the backup spot behind Nick Hardwick,
San Diego Chargers Sign Rookie DE Kendall Reyes to Four-Year Deal
With the NFL's rookie wage scale in place, no longer do fans of the San Diego Chargers have to worry about length holdout over contract negotiations with the team's draft picks. The money is pre-determined, and all the team and player have to agree upon is the length of the contract (and there's not much wiggle room there). That being said, the team has officially agreed to terms with their first rookie.
#Chargers second-round pick DE Kendall Reyes has agreed to terms, a source confirms.
— Adam Caplan (@caplannfl) May 8, 2012
Another source claims that the deal is four years long, pretty standard for a 2nd round selection. That should give Reyes plenty of time to work his way up the depth chart and become the starter, should he reach his potential.
