Muskat Nonsense
I usually don't read the piffle that she spews out, but two of the headlines here made me chuckle.
You decide which one is more ridiculous - the one talking about Soriano and his "infectious energy" keeping The Untouchables' spirits up or...
How the Cubs are making a "late charge" (5-3 in the last 8 games! Break out the Champagne!)
Russian propaganda was NEVER this good.

How the Outfield should be configured
In an attempt to continue to drum up more playing time for Tony Campana, I took a look at the RHP/LHP splits for the outfielders this year. In previous postings, I've mentioned how against RHP, Campana has had an OBP around .350 and its his LHP splits that have driven down his season numbers. To expand upon that a bit, and bring in the rest of the OF'ers:
I'm going to go with the assertion first that Colvin should be playing as many games as possible. I think many people here have stated that with good cause as we should see whether he can rebound closer to his 2010 numbers. So put him down for one of the spots against RHP AND LHP.
Campana has a .341/.383/.724 line against RHP - his line against LHP is horrible, so start him against all RHP.
Soriano's line against RHP this year is .265/.428/.693 - that's right LESS than Campana's. However, Fonzie's line against LHP is a very solid .341/.563/.904. He would starts against lefties.
Byrd's splits are better against RHP than LHP, .372/.449/.821 vs .275/.431/.706 - he should be starting against RHP and sitting against LHP.
Johnson's splits are almost identical (and excellent) - .358/.542/.900 vs RHP, .379/.516/.895 against LHP.
Against RHP, should-be non-outfielder Blake DeWitt has a .276/.399/.675 slash against RHP, but decent against LHP .370/.423/.793 - though he should never see the outfield grass again in my opinion.
So against RHP - the outfield should be: LF - Campana, CF - Byrd, RF - Colvin
Against LHP - LF - Soriano, CF - Johnson, RF - Colvin
Campana's GAME-CHANGING speed, and good numbers against RHP really demand that he start against all RHP the remainder of the year.
It's Getting Crowded In Here! The 25 Man Roster
I know, I know - there's a lot of time and probably a number of moves left to be made - but just for fun I was thinking about a 25 man roster based on who's on the team at the moment. There really doesn't seem to be room for everybody without making some moves.
Here's the way it looks to me:
Starters (8) - Soriano, Fukudome, Pie, Ramirez, Theriot, DeRosa, Lee, Soto
Bench (5) - Blanco, Cedeno, Ward, Murton, Pagan/Fuld
SPs (5) - Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Marquis, Marshall/Dempster
Bullpen (7) - Wood, Eyre, Howry, Wuertz, Marmol, Ascaino/Hart/Lahey
So it appears that as it stands now the choices would have to be made between Marshall and Dempster for the 5th spot in the rotation, between Pagan and Fuld for the last bench spot, and 2 of the 3 from Ascaino, Hart and Lahey for the bullpen.
Tough choices. I'd prefer Marshall to Dempster, Fuld to Pagan, and not quite sure about the bullpen options since Lahey has to be kept on the 25 man roster or offered back.
This is what I'd love to see Hendry do in the remainder of the offseason
Get Roberts - Putting DeRosa on the bench and making Murton, Pagan and Cedeno expendable (though not sure what to do to back up Theriot)
Get a #3 or #4 pitcher and make Dempster & Marquis expendable, with Marshall or Gallagher in the #5 spot.
Get a backup catcher and lose Blanco
Aubrey Huff anyone?
Just read on MLB.com that Houston didn't offer arbitration to Clemens, Pettite, Huff, Springer and Bagwell.
I think Huff would be a good fit if we got rid of Jones. Kind of the super-utility guy that would give us some good depth at 1B, 3B in case of injuries/days off, and can play the the corner OF positions.
Not saying he's a huge offensive upgrade from Jones, but he gives us far more flexibility in case of injury.
