HINES WARD IS back n Black....& a shade of Gold

July 2012...Mr. Ward can be seen for the last time in a Football Jersey that resembles the Pittsburgh Steelers...

                         THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

...his last unofficial moment on the Field will be n a major Hollywood Film, not bad at all!

As we all know by this point, there are more than a hand full of NFL teams vying for the Starting Quarterback services of one PEYTON WILLIAMS MANNING. The Indianapolis Colts officially announced the release of Peyton on March 7th-which means teams like the Dolphins--Cardinals--Jets--Redskins and at least 3 other teams are strongly considering giving Peyton a new contract to come play in their city. All I have to say is "pump the brakes homeboy", take my advice and the advice of a few others that I've read in the national media and social internet blogs of late, "don't touch P.Manning with a ten foot pole", his medical condition is to unstable even with a recent doctor's note that says he's 100% cleared to play professional tackle football again, its not worth the investment

Four neck surgeries in a 14 month span for an athlete that plays n the National Football League has no business suiting up and playing and no logical thinking owner of any team n the NFL should be signing any checks over to an athlete that has that type of medical resume, even if that player is a future first ballot Hall of Famer. How soon we forget about other athletes who had to retire unexpectedly cause of similar medical conditions, does Michael Irvin ring a bell? Now I know Irvin plays the receiver position and he gets hit more often than a QB but when it gets down to the nitty-gritty of play between those white lines, its about impact and the way the NFL is being played today--players are faster & stronger--the contact risk outweighs the benefits

I don't think there has been enough said or enough opinions expressed as it relates to Peyton quitting the game of Football and moving on with his life. It would be sobering time for the NFL, albeit brief, if Manning decided to do that but I believe every fan that loves the sport would truly understand if Peyton decided to 'hang em up' for good; he's closer to anyone in the league at becoming fully or partially paralyzed off one clean or otherwise hard hit and I can tell u this: if it was hard watching Peyton say goodbye to the Colts organization and the fans it would be 100 times harder to watch him being carted off the field on a stretcher, motionless, next season, if in fact he does decide to resume his career--which all signs points to him doing

Stay away Peyton-don't come back-you have nothing more to prove and more importantly-Owners don't fall for the Peyton politically friendly correct Manning charm and talent, it won't pay off in the long run (literally and figuratively), at the end of the day/contract all you will have is a physically broken down overpaid Peyton (hopefully he can still walk upright) leading your team to another first round playoff exit (like P.M. did so regularly with the Colts, when he was younger and more skillfully sharp) and you'll be trying to convince your fans and front office personnel that signing Peyton was still a smart move even though he brought you no Super Bowl Championship and your still searching for a 'franchise' quality quarterback (hint hint: Dolphins and Redskins)

p.s.

The real question that needs to be asked and that nobody seems to bringing up; why did Jim Irsay (owner of the Colts) pony up so much money to an aging unhealthy quarterback who was on the back end of his career? Last year Irsay gave Peyton (who was coming off his 2nd neck surgery) a ridiculously high salary built contract that you normally would give to a franchise QB that's 25 not 35, which is one of the main reasons they had to cut Peyton and not keep him-which meant they could have tried to work out an easier transition from him to Andrew Luck (who the Colts will be picking first in the 1st round of this years draft) with Peyton still on the team...the Colts were on the hook for $28 million-owed to Peyton-if they didn't cut him before March 8th. The Irsay family put themselves in this awkward position with Peyton, by overpaying him last off-season, so I have zero sympathy for that organization...

Now lets get down to the professional football business Yo!

1. Great to see arguably the best receiver in the NFL, Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals, received a very rich long term contract extension, he's worth it and the organization really had no choice but to give him what he wanted cause 'Fitz' is the face of the team and his productivity on the field since he entered the league n '04 is second to none. But here's the issue, the team will only get its money worth from the Fitz deal if their newly required free agent QB, Kevin Kolb, turns out to be a franchise type quarterback...I gotta feeling Kolb won't be the answer, sorry Larry

2. Still not sure if Cam Newton will turn into a leading franchise type qb for the Carolina Panthers, way to early to tell but if I was buying stock and Cam was the stock, I would say 'hold'...wait and let the stock mature before making a final decision

3. Chris Johnson, the running back for the Tenessee Titans, is holding out for a new contract deal and eventually he will get it but he shouldn't get the type of money he's been asking for; he wants quarterback type $ even though he doesn't touch the ball on every play like a qb. He want it but we all want a lot of things in life that we can't always have and in this case Johnson should settle for being the highest paid running back in the league. The shelf life for running backs in the 21st century NFL is 5 to 8 years as it relates to Prime Level play and the Titan organization understands that, if CJ doesn't except top RBack money then Tennessee should trade him and get a first and 2nd round pick for the '12 draft. It has already been proven, quite consistently over the life of this league, that you don't need a great running back to win a title-all a team needs is a good/serviceable back that knows how to move the chains and get first downs; if you don't believe me, recent history proves it, just look at the...Green Bay Packers and New Orlean Saints

4. Big Ben and Phillip Rivers will make the leap to the top of the qb food chain this season, along with Aaron Rodgers, they will be looked at as the top 3 qb's the game has to offer when its all said and done at the end of this year

5. Here's a list of once highly touted qb's that will never be great or even very good in the NFL, mainly because of poor throwing mechanics, pocket confidence and/or the inability to read and comprehend defensive schemes: Vince Young, Jason Campbell, Alex Smith, Chad Henne (I would like to add Tim Tebow to this list but in fairness its to early, I'll give him 2 more years before I put him on this list)

6. Tony Romo is being paid like a franchise quarterback and he puts up gaudy regular season numbers but his ability to come through in the playoffs will forever mark him as a underachiever, after this season the Cowboys will be forced to look for another future QB in the '12 draft

7. Sam Bradford is a stud and barring injury will be a top 10 QB in the next 2 years

8. the New York Jets and New England Patriots will make the playoffs but won't represent the AFC in the super bowl...they look great on paper but will have trouble transferring all of that supposed great talent to the field on a consistent week to week basis

9. Matt Cassell is extremely overpaid and overrated, he will be horribly exposed this year as a very average qb

10. The irony of Peyton Manning signing that super rich contract extension this offseason is the fact he's coming off a major neck/spine surgery and he's yet to fully heal and who knows if he'll ever be fully capable of playing this season at all-at the level we're use to seeing from him. Manning should be happy he won his only super bowl title back in '06 cause he'll never get close to another bowl again. At the end of last season the Colts should have been seriously scouting a future QB replacement-now they will be up against the draft clock to find a formidable college quarterback to groom; this will be the beginning of the deteioration of Peyton's body

11. I'm not quite sure Colt McCoy is the franchise qb the Cleveland Browns want and need him to be but he does have a cool name and since we're on the topic of 'not so sures'--Cam Newton--way to early to tell what his impact will be but he has a great smile...the TV commercial world will love him

12. What do Mike Shanahan and Todd Haley have in common? They are both 'horrible' head coaches

13. After this season is over Joe Flacco will start to be questioned about his ability to be a great qb in this league and David Garrard will be officially released/cut from the Jacksonville Jaguars

14. Josh Freeman has the potential to maximize the 'mobile qb' theory that coaches and experts have been trying to label on a young gunslinger for some time now. He has a great arm and knows how to move well in the pocket without jeopardizing the integrity of the play-(i.e. taking off and running before he lets the pass play fully develop)

15. the Detroit Lions are definitely on the Rise, the Vikings-Bears-Texans are not, all 3 teams will have to re-evaluate the direction of their team at the end of the season. The culprit for these teams not playing well: Donovan McNabb-Mike Martz and Gary Kubiak

16. the Giants season, because of major injuries to key players, is over before it has even began

17. The Cincinnati Bengals has ushered out the old and brought in the new but the results will continue to be the same: BAD-on and off the field. One final salutation for Carson Palmer, he's sitting out the year so he doesn't have to play for the Bengal organization again, not sure it even matters in the grand scheme of things-the Cincinnati fans have already gotten over him and at best he was an average playing quarterback; he never truly got back to that great level of play after that major knee injury 5 years ago

18. If I was betting man I would put money on the Saints, Falcons, Packers and Rams(that's right I said the Rams-they not the Lions will make a huge jump in maturity and wins as a team this year) competing to appear in the NFC Championship game

*A run 1st, throw 2nd QB will never be successful in the NFL....that's why Division 1A college coaches need to do their mobile qb talent a favor-while they're still in college-and groom them away from being 'freestyle' quarterbacks to a more pocket oriented signal caller, so when they do reach the NFL there more prepared to succeed long term*

19. I would be shocked if the 49ers won more than 2 games this year

20. On paper the entire Philadelphia Eagles team looks formidable-a dream like team-but they don't play football on paper and this Eagle team will have to show up each and every week and play at the top of their game cause teams are going to be 'fired up' to get after them. The Eagles went out and signed a lot of free agent players-at a high price no less-with the idea that these players will immediately fit in (despite the lockout shortened training camp)-that alone is a risky assumption on the coaches part but that won't be the reason why the Eagles will be at home watching the the Super Bowl as suppose to playing deep in to the postseason. The reason will be MICHEAL VICK...he had a great comeback year last season, not a MVP type season but a good enough season as it relates to him getting out of prison just a full season prior. But this year Vick will be exposed for what he use to be exposed for before he went to prison, when he was the qb for the Atlanta Falcons, his inaccurancy-inability to play a full season healthy and his still slow defensive read progressions. Opposing defenses have had a full offseason to adjust to what Vick did last year and this season you will see him struggle mightedly against teams that have very good defensive personnel...oh and here's the icing on the ice cream cake, Vick has yet to win a major playoff game that has mattered in his entire career

Peace...enjoy the 2011 NFL Season, it should be a fantastic!

p.s.

Hey Raider Nation, u thought I forgot about you guys, well I didn't; I would be lying if I said I like anything about your team (from the front office to the coaching staff to the players on the field) everything about the Raider team and organization is a disaster and this offseason has proved no different-from letting certain pro bowl players walk in free agency to the drafting of suspect skills talent Terrelle Pryor, I expect the Oakland Raiders to continue their recent decade long history of Excellent Mediocrity

I know this is a Pittsburgh Steeler Blog site and 'Oh' how I respect the Black and Gold Cypher of Opinions and Suggestions but if u will, give me a few moments to reflect on 2 topics that may indirectly effect STEELER FANS and directly impact Pirate and Penquin Fans

I"m a huge fan of the Black and Gold Sports triangle so I root unapologetic-ally for all 3 professional franchises in the Steel City; so with that I want to give an early Big-UP's and props to the Pirates and how there playing and being managed. They've been dissed left and right over the past decade (most of it directed towards ownership and much of it was deserving) but I've been of the strong opinion the last 3 years that everybody n the organization (top to bottom-literally) have been working hard at turning things around and that the 2011 season was going to be the tipping point for the franchise and so far so good. I know we're only a month into the season but the Pirates are giving fans hope that they'll stay relevant for much of the season or at least till the Steelers report to Training Camp (if the NFL season actually happens) and if that happened I suggest the Pirates receive a victory parade and a 'city to the key' ceremony.

Lastly I would give a huge laugh and appreciative 'F-U" to those early exited Washington Capitals; for the 4th straight year they've been bounced out of the playoffs in either the 1st or 2nd round-after being prohibitive favorites to compete for a Cup each of those four years. The Capitals arrogant-stuffy-wining azz coach Bruce Boudreau deserves most of the hatred being directed towards the team a day after the Tampa Bay Lightning eliminated them Sweep-style (4-zero)...he sucks in the postseason and he has the nerve to spit venom towards the Penquin franchise whenever the 2 teams get together to play. And while I'm at it, lets throw the so-called best player in the hockey world under the bus as well, Alexander Ovechkin (lets be honest he's great offensively but he's no Sidney Crosby), he's been known to throw cheap shots at the Penquins on and off the ice so to see him exit early and go home for the summer is happy times in my household; he had a good series against the Lightning but it wasn't good enough, his teammates didn't step up alongside him so they all get no love. The Penquins were sent home early too, by those same T.Bay Lights, but as you well know by now we had a pretty good excuse for getting eliminated this year (2 great excuses and that horrible power play) and as far as I'm concerned as long as it wasn't the Washington Capitals laying down the gauntlet on our season... its all G.O.O.D....until next season....

Terry Bradshaw has been a hypocrite since the day he condemned Big Ben for his off the field actions and he continues to be today even through the forced fake apology to Roethlisberger that he felt compelled to do just so he could, or was ordered to by his exec bosses, conduct a one-on-one interview that will be aired on Sunday a few hours before the Big Game. As was reported in the local Post-Gazette and was also printed in Bradshaw's tell-all book that came out years ago (in Bradshaw's own 1st person words), Terry was just as despicable and heinous as Ben was when he was playing n the 70's, so how can he cast disparaging words and comments on Ben and his behavior; he can't that's why Terry should have shut his trap and played the middle-ground when it came to condemning Ben's alleged actions away from the game of professional football. I've lost a lot of respect and love for Terry but I guess that's nothing new for the Steeler faithful when it comes to opinions on the Blomb-Bomber. I just wish more fans and national media would have called Terry out when all of this first broke, comparing his off the field behavior when he played to Ben's current situation...to bad it never happened and probably never will...

Watched the replay of that Santonio Holmes game winning TD-catch against the Texans and I noticed, unlike the Referee that was standing in front, Holmes did not get both his feet down after the catch...did any of you guys notice that? Not sure if Texans could have campaigned for a challenge in that situation

We now hand over the QB reigns to Lefty for 2 weeks and then u know who's back......say it with me "BIG B.E......

That's the new slogan for the first 1/4 of the 2010 season-SURVIVE TO THE BYE-...it really doesn't matter at this point who starts at QB (wit Lefty gone for at least the first 2 games if not more)...we just gotta survive to the Bye week and then once Ben comes back the real rooting and fandom for SteelerNation can begin, until then, well you know, keep your fingers crossed guys and gals....

I read it in the Pitt Post-Gazette and I've also been reading it from some national NFL online columnist; they're suggesting that Tomlin has screwed up this whole QB preseason battle to replace Big Ben for the first 4 weeks of the season. And to be honest (when am i ever not honest?! :-) I think all the speculative criticism is HOG-WASH....that's right I said Hogwash, and I mean it, I do, don't make me say another played out-corny catch phrase...like BULL-CRAP!, cause I will!

He's the first NFL coach, n the history of the league, to have to handle such a situation and I think he's doing a great, not good, a great damn job. Every QB on the Steeler roster not named Ben Roethlisberger has had a chance to step up and prove themselves worthy of being the guy while Big Ben serves his suspension and bottom line is this: Byron Leftwich is a veteran who gives the Steelers the best chance to win each of the first 4 games. If for some reason he can't do it , then Tomlin logically goes to Dixon as the savior and possibly the Hero, to rescue the season and solidify the bridge leading to Roethlisbergers return.

While sneaking in a few reps for B.R.(another brilliant move), Tomlin has juggled the playing time for Dixon and Lefty the best anybody could have asked (we won't consider Batch in this situation cause we all understand he's only around for his leadership on the sidelines, his starting days r long gone) There seems to be a rush of panic, mostly from the media and just a few blogging fans, cause Tomlin has yet announce a starter for Week 1 and he routinely keeps the preseason QB rotation a secret till game day, who cares! He doesn't want to reveal it, best believe behind closed doors the players and coaches know what the rotation will be and the bottom line is you still have to go out there and perform no matter what QB starts or ends the game

The preseason finale is this Thursday and I expect to see Ben receive 1 series with the one's (let the fans cheer him for the first and final time till October) and Byron will probably get 2 series with the one's and after that Dixon and Batch will play out the rest of the game and hope nobody gets seriously injured. Byron Leftwich makes the most sense to start the season as the #1 with Dixon getting in to the game for a few designed plays that maximize his unique skill set. Lefty isn't a frachise type of QB anymore but he's good enuff to win a few games...lets hope a few means 4!

Welcome to the ice cold brutality of the AFC North T.O., yes u played in the uncomfortable cold of Buffalo for a year and yes you played for a year n the unforgiving cold of Philadelphia but you're now back in the Mideast where the Hits and Frozen Tundra is Best! Not to mention the pressure to win immediately will be the icing on the 'tiger cake' for a team that now has Palmer, Chad, Benson a pretty good defense and of course U

The AFC North might not be rated as the best division from a talent point of view but it rivals any division when it comes to a physical/beat down play-style and as far as I'm concerned the AFC Norris division is the real Black/Blue division (yes I include the Browns as well when I talk about hard-intensity, there record has been porous this decade but for the most part when u play the Brownies you're in for a tough game even in a blowout win)

T.Owens u might be built like a Gold's Gym but your track record clearly shows that you're allergic to playing a true physical style of football (i.e. the hesitancy to run pass patterns across the middle, at this pt in your career, is one big indicator)

Good to No luck Terrell O ...I'm of the opinion you will be irrelevant and a non-factor (much like last season with the Bills) once the calendar flips to November 1, where you'll then be required to deal with Old-Man Winter while concentrating on the football field...that's just not you Terrell, prove me wrong (play like u did when u were a Eagle) and I'll come back and write a new blog talking about how great of a season you had BUT first thing first...my money Bet (the very little I still got in this recession) is going towards you coming up dry and stale on all that Popcorn You and 'Overrated-Cinco' ordered last night while watching re-runs of your reality shows. See u during Week 9 and 14, that's if you and Och don't implode and sabotage the whole Cincinnati Bengal season before the bye week!

(p.s.) I know Bengals coach Marvin Lewis was saying all the right things during his NFL Network interview but his facial expression and body language gave me the impression he did not want T.O. any where near his team but when his owner, Mike Brown, is gloating over Terrell like a new born baby, I guess Lewis had no choice. This isn't the first time Marvin has been over-rode with player personnel choices (i.e. Chris Henry being brought back to the team for the 3rd time last offseason) and I'm sure it won't be the last!

There's a ton of Steeler fans 'throwing up n their mouths' just a little today cause of the latest string of so-called bad luck that the Pittsburgh Steelers has endured and some of it is justified but at the end of the day, the timing of the discouraging news couldn't have come at a better time of the year than now; that's why I'm as cool as the other side of my computer hard drive....

First off those worrying about these issues that I'm about to lay out below won't have to worry for long cause come July 30th and training camp initiates the football process will begin to take shape, barring any unforseen new training camp injury, and come Game 1 of the NFL regular season all should be at 100% ready to explode at Heinz Field

MIKE TOMLIN...will and should have a new long term deal done very soon, (I predict they will announce his resigning within 2 weeks of this posting)...so don't panic

SANTONIO HOLMES & LIMAS SWEED...between Mike Wallace, Randle-El, Arnaz Battle, Emmanuel Sanders, Antonio Brown and whoeva else puts on a WR jersey should more than adequately take up the yards and catches that will be loss between the two castoffs (I predict Wallace and Sanders to emerge as Stars)....so don't panic!

DEFENSE...u think a Dick Lebeau defense is goin to have back-to-back 'down' years in productivity, if u think that then you haven't been a steeler fan for very long, I expect dominance from the D this year and (I predict Troy P to pick up his first of 2 Defensive player of the year awards)....don't panic!

OFFENSIVE LINE...up until this past Monday when Colon went down for the year with an achilles injury this unit was shaping up to be a damn good solid line (with Hartwig coming into camp fully healthy and our first round pick Pouncey projected to push for the starting RG position); and its still has the potential to be a solid-forceful unit! Its early enough in the learning-unification process for the Steeler coaches to insert a new RT and still get a nice tight bond throughout training camp. I when I say new RT I'm not talking about some old-has been from a another team. (I predict the dark horse talent of Ramon Foster will win RT position in camp with Scott as his back-up, Essex will continue to back up whoeva starts at RG which I think will be the rookie first rounder).....btw, W.Colon was a good Guard but not a great Guard-he was great run blocker and a average pass blocker, never the less.....don't panic!

FINALLY....this last panic-concern that I refuse to worry over is the most important position on the team.....

QUARTERBACK... yes I know Big Ben's 4 game absence will be HUGE (I'm saying 4 cause I got a good gut feeling Ben will continue to be on good behavior and the Goodell Commish will reduce it from 6 to 4 right before or during training camp) but it is what it is, I'm dealing with Ben's loss as if its a 4 game injury loss and we'll get him back after the bye week. I expect Leftwich and if need be Dixon to step up to the plate and perform as needed, both of these guys know how to play Steeler Ball and they shouldn't be held to no lower standard than Roethlisberger. With that being said I would love for a 4-0 start of the season but I'll take 2-2. If the Steelers have that type of season record as Ben comes back from suspension then that's more than manageable for the best QB n the game (I predict the Steelers will be 3-1 heading in to Big Ben's return and once he gets back under center he will have a great season and lead the Black & Gold to a first round playoff bye...Ben has much to prove this season, on and off the field, and I make it a habit to never bet against the Best crunch-time Closer in the NFL)....SO, DON'T PANIC!

I whizzed by the Dallas Morning News website to read up on Mark Cuban and his choking Mavericks and I casually saw some early pics of the Dallas Cowboy mini-camp and low and behold what do I see on the practice Jerseys of the CowMen? Commercial advertising! Yes that's right, Jerry Jones has struck a deal with AT&T and for the foreseeable future all of the Dallas practice jerseys will have a At&t logo on the top left corner (and I wouldn't be shocked if jock-straps and socks were included)...Loud and Proud!

What's next Game Day Jerseys? Is Jerry Jones a smart business man or money whore? Maybe both, he does have to find a way to pay off that ridiculously huge billion dollar stadium and what better way to do it than 'whore out' every piece of Cowgirl paraphernalia! Here's hoping that system of business never gets to the 'Sunday' outfit level for the NFL but my gut is telling its coming.....!

(the WNBA will be debuting their own pimp-game jersey advertising this coming season as they struggle to hold on to a league that has shown signs of folding)

To say fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers are angry at the recent incidents involving Big Ben-Jeff Reed and now Santonio Holmes, would be an understatement. I hear fans of the black & gold calling in to national radio shows and denouncing their loyalty to the Steelers and to be honest I can't blame 'em, this period of time is a embarrassment to all involved emotionally with this organization. I guess you could argue that you need to stick with your team through thick and thin and I agree with that assessment but it seems like most Steeler loyalist are past that point when it comes to this current team (i.e. Terry Bradshaw).

I hate to say it, I hate to agree with it but it's been said by other columnist and bloggers the past few weeks and its staring everyone right in the face. Are the Steelers the new Bengals?! Maybe but to be honest there's no comeback for that 'slap in the face' statement, if in fact black & gold fans are sincerely making the switch. Steeler Nation has to grin and bear this current storm of improprieties and hope no other major off the field incident happens this off season or any other future off season. Considering Steeler Nation is the biggest NFL fan base in the world, loosing a few thousand people won't hurt the over-all numbers but its still a long-term reality check to know there are fans stripping themselves of everything Steeler related and now rooting for another team.

Steeler Nation for some people has now turned into Raven Nation, Bengal Nation and Brown Nation....Ouch!

Last Minute Super Bowl Party Etiquette Tip

Hey! If you're going to a Super Bowl party today and you know nothing to very little about the professional sport of football, do us all a favor and be very very quiet and go hang in the kitchen with the ladies, the annoying dog and the owner of the house your partying at who's simultaneously trying to figure out who clogged up the basement toilet while also door buzzing some body in through the front bldg gate

Basically what I'm saying is "SHUT THE **CK UP"! Shut up and don't say a word until halftime and even at that point, you want to keep your non-football talk simple and easy. "Hey, how u feeling? Is your team winning" [response] "Yes...bye" That the should be the extent of a conversation that involves a hardcore NFL fan and a somewhat casual party-goer that just happens to be at the party cause he felt compelled to be doing something everybody else is doing

No real NFL/Super Bowl fan wants to be zoned in on the 1st qtr of the game while answering questions from a sports novice about which player is who ("is that Clayton Manning wearing #12"?) and how many points does one touchdown constitute when Peyton Manning is n position to drive his Colts into the red zone and possibly score the first touchdown of the game

The real tip here is if you are a hardcore NFL fan and you truly want to focus on the game stay home, invite 2 or 3 (no more than that) of your truest football friends over--light up the ole Wide-Flat Screen TV and watch the Super Bowl in NFL Bliss. This way you can focus, drink and yell at the screen without some 'American Idol lovin' Dooch-bag looking at you all crazy and telling you to "pipe it down a bit, its just a game, its no big deal". That type of guy will be littered all over super bowl parties this sunday from California to Maine and sometimes they will travel in packs to S.B. parties; these type of people should be eliminated from all sporting activites/viewings, period!

This is more than just a game, this is the final and biggest game of the season for the NFL and we Americans are celebrating like we're entitled to each and every year and that's wit National Holiday reverance. After the Super Bowl all NFL fans will go into a hybernation detox withdrawal that's not a pretty sight to see; believe me, I'm n the early stages of it right now--I'm sweating like a pig 24 hours a day, sleeping only 3 hours at night and I"m losing weight rapidly...somebody please mail me a 6 pack of PBR, couple boxes of Bratwurst and a number 1 fan foam finger so I can start my recovery

I'm already looking forward to the April 24th Draft

It's time to do away with the Pro Bowl game itself, I'm sure I'm not the only one who believes this but the game hasn't been any more meaningless as it stands today. Players are to banged up from the regular season so the results are a third of the voted in roster backs out of the game citing nagging injuries. Even if the players are exaggerating I understand and appreciate the fact if a player decides he doesn't want to risk further injury by playing in a post season exhibition game (which is what the NFL Pro Bowl is and has always been). The speed and violence of the Game has changed dramatically, for the sharper, in the 21st century and why should we expect a player to go out on the field and continue to beat up his body for a paycheck that equals a mere $45,000 (that's pennies in regards to the millions they make during the season)

Here's the solution, the NFL should just release the names of the players that were voted in as pro bowl starters and reserves and call it a day. The dog and pony show they do a week after the Super Bowl in Hawaii every year is ok and mildly entertaining but for the most part NFL fans have mentally checked out from the football season once the Super Bowl is completed. Of course this year the commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell, tried implementing the Pro Bowl a week before the Super Bowl and although it might have seen like a success is was quite simply one of the biggest disappointments since very first pro bowl....34 players backed out of playing in the game...the most ever! Bye Bye Pro Bowl bring on the NO Bowl

As much as I love James Farrior and all that he's done for this team, this coming '10 season is the year we need to moderately faze him out as the starting 'mike' LB and start mixing in a go between replacement linebacker (I nominate Keyaron Fox) who can take over the duties for the next year and a half until one of the draftees from this year can rightfully and sensibly take over the position and hold it down for the next decade. For that to happen we'll have to draft 1 or 2 ILB's this year and I think its plausible to say the least; if we can pick one in the 3rd round and then pick up a long shot player in the 5 or 6th round-even the 7th--(although that might be asking to much to find a eventual starting middle linebacker that late in the draft)

We all finally saw age catch up with Farrior this year and I feel like if we're going to contain Ray Rice of the Ravens, Benson of the Bengals and Harrison of the Browns twice a year we need to find a ILB that is a lot quicker and fluid wth his flow in covering RB's and Tight Ends out of the backfield and wing

For the most part every analyst and former NFL player that gets asked about Dick's legitimacy as a H.O.F. is sincere in their praise of the man in relation of Le beau's playing career as a CB for the Detroit Lions from '59-'72...but I'm stil miffed at the few critics who feel like Le Beau is only getting consideration for the Hall because of his contribution as a D.Coordinator in the NFL (and a great defensive innovator for the game I will also add)...and yes the senior committee Hall of Fame voters I'm sure are considering his coaching gifts that span multiple decades (even if they don't admit it) but lets be real about the D.Lebeau the player

He was a very good corner back in the NFL that amassed 62 interceptions in his career, currently in the top 5 all time for that category, and he played the position right-meaning he was a well-rounded 'all tools' player that never took a play off. Dick's problem was something that was no fault of his own, he played opposite the legend Dick 'Night Train' Layne, which meant most QB's chose not to throw towards Night Train which meant Dick was a player of target every Sunday and a lesser average player would have settled in and took on that challenge with trepidation, but Lebeau did not, he took advantage of all those balls being thrown his way and in the end he took 62 balls away from the opposing offenses, total, throughout his NFL career

Lebeau deserved to get in years ago under the standard post-career guidelines but it didn't happen because a lot of voters feel like players that play opposite great/first ballot h.o.famers can't stand out enuff individually and is often over-shadowed. Well here's hoping the coach Steeler players call 'dad' gets his just-due n 2010 and finally gets invited to Canton, Ohio....(to participate as a recipient not a coach in an exhibition game)

I'm truly loving the Troy P head and shoulders (even after seeing and hearing the spots at least a million times out here n L.A.) but lets hope he keeps his body and image n TV and Radio spots and not on any more video game covers because after this past seasons injury tenure I'm convinced the All-Madden NFL video game 'cover curse' if for real

I know Arizona Cardinals Wr Larry Fitzgerald was on the cover as well (it was a duo player cover for only the 2nd time) and he played the whole season relatively injury free, but it really doesn't matter from what I see as long as the curse can grab a hold of 1 athlete and ruin his season then its all good and considered a successful MVP type year for the A.M.C.

Here's to hoping no other active Steelers will ever contemplate being on the cover....EVER!

There's has been a very healthy debate for the last 10 or so years over the issue who's the REAL America's team in the NFL and by default fans, critics and former players has labeled the Dallas Cowboys the team the nation cheers for, and that might be true to some extent but when it comes to sheer numbers the Cowboys aren't close to being the favorite team the Nation gets behind. That title goes to the Six-time World Champs PITTSBURGH STEELERS, and to be honest no team in football or any other American sports league comes close to what is famously fan-coined in the City of Steel and around the World as STEELER-NATION

From what I understand the Cowboys were labeled 'America's Team' in the 70's because of the big phat Star that exist on their helmet but more importantly they won a few Super Bowls (2) during that time and the TV ratings for all their games hit the roof in relation to viewership; but that pales in comparison to what the Steelers did during that same period. Pittsburgh won 4 super bowls, twice beating the Cowboys in the big game, and they have more Hall of Famers during that era than any other team so the title of America's Team should of went to the Steelers not the Cowboys

With all due respect to the Packers-Chiefs-Bears-Raiders fandom, there's a strong presence across North America for these teams as well, they don't measure up to the crazed-year around followship that the Steeler Nation imposes on the sports world

So lets end the debate today and forever, the Pittsburgh Steelers fanbase is not just here in the States but around the world..rolling strong and steady & stubborn...Osama Bin Laden has been known to rock a Steeler Hat in one of his Video Monologues. I live in Los Angeles and if you don't know, this is the biggest melting pot for people(s) to move to from around the world; and I see more Steeler Paraphanelia worn by strangers than any other team in sports period. Hats, shirts, pants, pins, car insignias, tattoos, pets, you name it...Steeler Nation represents! Sorry Cowboy fans, you might be in the same region as the Steelers when it comes to fan appreciation but the Black & Gold owns the country

After unsuccessfully 'capturing-battering and looting' a U.S. Navy Sea Ship off the coast of Somalia the Pittsburgh Pirates turned their sites to the MLB schedule and the results have been fantastic. For a franchise that has endured 16 straight losing seasons what their doing so far in this young '09 season is pretty remarkable. The Pirates team ERA is best in the National League, the pitching staff also has a league best 4 shut-outs so far and their easily one of the Top 5 teams in the league when you're referencing wins and day in and day out quality production from every player on the lineup card

Bud Selig said in a statement that he's seriously contemplating making a drastic move to eliminate the Pirate franchise because in his tenure as commissioner of the MLB they've been one of the worst teams and he doesn't quite know how to properly articulate and/or pronounce the phrase "Pittsburgh Pirates are at the top or near the top of their division and there's a good chance they will make the playoffs"

Check back in late August to see if all of this actually comes to fruition!!!

There's no doubt that the greatest franchise in NFL history is the Pittsburgh Steelers, with their record 6th Championship win in Super Bowl 43. But how about this scenario, with a very good young coach in Mike Tomlin and a franchise QB, who'll just be turning 27 in March '09, and has yet to reach his optimum prime, the Steelers could be looking at another 3 rings in their trophy case before Big Ben decides to hang up the Steel helmet for good at the end of his career, which in theory is at least 10 years away. It's pretty scary for others team to contemplate such domination but its very real and could easily come true

The only area of vulnerability for the Steelers heading into next season ('09) is the quality of the Offensive Line, it can and will get better through the Draft and FA this offseason, which means even more time for Ben to throw and of course the running game will get back to the sheer dominance it used to exude the last 30 years before this somewhat average running season Pitt just had n '08

The only thing Steeler Nation has to hope for over the next few season is a relatively injury free situations for their core-franchise players (which can be a crapshoot in the NFL, its a very physical league) and what type of slogan and catch phrases they can create for all the Super Bowl Championships the Steelers will be potentially winning down the road, try these on for size........"5 RINGS plus 2, u know how the Super Bowl Steeler7 do"........."Don't hate on 8 for the Champion Steeler Greats"...... "8 is not enuff, the Champion Steelers look Fine with 9"

Lets not get it twisted Steeler Nation (and yes I used the early '00's slang twisted even though nobody says that word anymore, unless your still trying to be hip like me :-) Pittsburgh needs effective on the field play from Hines Ward if they're going to win the Super Bowl. And when I say effective I mean Psycho Ward has to be playing at a minimum 75% effective rate. Then and only then can the offense work consistently enough to put up points and beat the Cardinals

3 TD's and at least 2 or 3 field goals should be enough to beat AZ but it all goes back to Mr. Ward (and of course the continued dominance of the Steel Curtain II D), if he can muster up the energy to stay in the game the whole time and not go out for any significant period of time then Big Ben and o.c. Bruce Arians can mix up the play calling and get key down the field production from all the offensive playmakers

I know this is old news by now but since I'm a brand new member and I wrote this blog a day after the loss to the Titans on another fan blog site I thought I would re-post it here to see what u die-hard Steel fanz think:

"Towards the end of the Titans-Steelers game, week16, running back Lendale White took the legendary Steeler Fan tool...The Terrible Towel....and preceded to step on it harshly and dig it into the ground while scraping dirt on it (the Titans handled the Steelers quite convincingly in the game by forcing 5 turnovers and winning 31-14). I got a feeling coaches and players in that Steel Curtain locker room will remember what Lendale did, if indeed they meet again in the AFC Championship game--and there's strong evidence that proves that could likely happen--Pittsburgh will have extra motivation to end the Titans season in front of their home crowd

Along with the players and coaches I know most Steeler Nation fans will remember that gesture by L.White and if I know SNF like I do they will let Lendale, his teammates--coaches and of course the fans know how pissed off they were by buying out half of the playoff tickets for that game and show up to LP Field with more fire, fervor and a heavy dose of annoyance to make sure its a miserable day/night through-out Nashville

I expect a potential Titan-Steeler game a 2nd time around will be more competitive and easily matched and play down to the very end of the last quarter; and I also expect Lendale White will get a chance to back up all the 'Smack' he instagated by burying the Terrible Towel. But I wouldn't bet my money on the Titans winning that 2nd matchup if both teams meet up in the playoffs, the Steelers has proven before they can go on the road during the playoffs and win especially if they've played that team before during the regular season and there seeing them again in the playoffs

You best believe Coach Tomlin will take that short clip of Lendale stomping on the T. Towel and use that as extra motivation to continue to push his team thru the playoffs and on to the Super Bowl in Tampa, Florida. But its not like the Steelers need extra motivation, they dont, but I'm sure White's act of dominant spontaneity will come back to haunt him and his team come playoff time. You would of thought most teams opposing the Steelers would of known better than to rile up the Steelers because 3 years ago during the regular season, @ Heinz Field, the Bengals T.J. Houshmandzadeh infamously wiped his shoes with the T.T., in a game the Bengals won, disrespected everybody in the Black & Gold that day but revenge was so sweet for Pitt because 3 or 4 weeks later (during the 1st rds. of playoffs) Pitt went in to the Bengals backyard and beat them soundly on route to their 5th super bowl ring

Bad omen for Lendale White? Maybe, but what I do know is that Steeler Nation Fans will be all over the internet tonite and all week screaming loud and clear about their team and how they feel about other organizations, their coaches and players on the field who show Disrespect to the Steeeelers. Believe me when I say this, its going to get nasty"
