2010-2011 D-League Affiliations Announced

1

The D-League announced its affiliations for the upcoming season earlier today. The biggest news is that the Texas (Frisco) Legends will be solely affiliated with the Dallas Mavericks, although the press release doesn't specify whether it will be a direct or hybrid affiliation (the Legends are co-owned by Mavs exec Donnie Nelson). In light of the LA D-Fenders shutting down for the year, the Lakers will now be affiliated with the Bakersfield Jam, setting off a chain reaction that pushes the Warriors over to the Reno Bighorns and the Orlando Magic over to the New Mexico (formerly Albuquerque, they're now based in Rio Rancho) Thunderbirds. Finally, it appears the rumored New Jersey Nets-Springfield Armor direct affiliation won't be happening this year.

Pacers coach Jim O'Brien has added Vitaly Potapenko to his staff.

Pacers coach Jim O'Brien has added Vitaly Potapenko to his staff.

From the Twitter account of the Indy Star's Pacers beat writer Mike Wells. Potapenko had been an assistant coach with the Pacers' D-League affiliate Fort Wayne Mad Ants last year, and O'Brien was Potapenko's coach when the latter played for the Boston Celtics. His elevation continues the trend of D-League head coaches and assistants getting NBA jobs, including Bryan Gates, Scott Roth and Robert Pack last year and Quin Snyder this year.

The Nets are close to moving Yi Jianlian. They are working on a deal with the Wizards that would send Yi and cash to Washington for a player who makes "significantly less" than what the Nets’ power forward earns. Three sources confirmed this could happen. The player could be Quinton Ross ($1.14 million) or one of their draft picks. Yi makes $4.05 million this season. Either way, the Nets are close to getting Yi’s salary off their books.

Could Latavious Williams Go in the First Round?

2

Tom Ziller's latest mock draft has the Thunder drafting D-Leaguer Latavious Williams in the first round. Ziller himself admits that it's probably high, but it also seems a testament to how much notice Williams has gotten from his pre-draft workouts that there could be an even higher level of risk that Oklahoma City could lose out on their D-League affiliate's player.

A&M Supposedly Prefers the SEC

1

According to this Texas Monthly columnist, Texas A&M would prefer to join the SEC (this isn't the first time he's written that), and Oklahoma may or may not join them. I'm skeptical A&M would leave UT's side, for every reason previously stated, plus the fact that trying to keep the rivalry going would require an out of conference game, leaving one less game they can play against Sam Houston State or whomever.

Taken from this FreeDarko post, here's a clip from a Canadian TV show featuring the hilarious non-acting of Randy Foye. I'll probably be saying "Porter. I should've known it was you" for the rest of the day.

Jamison hasn't been put in position to flourish on the offensive end. It seems that he has been pigeon-holed into this role as a "stretch four" to hit three pointers, but that totally marginalizes all that he can contribute to a team offensively. You don't average 19 points over 12 seasons as a 6-foot-9 power forward if all you can do is shoot jumpers. Granted, Jamison does enjoy shooting jumpers, but I happen to recall seeing him work in the low block over the past few years, especially on the left side of the paint, where he can quickly spin around taller defenders and toss up floaters or one those Sanford & Son approved garbage shots.

Michael Lee on how the Cavaliers haven't fully utilized all of Antawn Jamison's offensive abilities. Even granting that Mike Brown hasn't had a lot of time to evaluate what Jamison can/can't do and how he fits in with the rest of the team, let's say that I'm less than surprised that he can't figure out what to do with Jamison.
