Why Ohio State/Michigan Still Matters

46

The Game remains one of the most celebrated and contested rivalries in all of sports, and six seasons can't change that.

Tradition doesn't get hypothermia. Ohio State students have jumped into the icy shallows of Mirror Lake on the Thursday before The Game for over a century. This year's summit was moved forward to Tuesday to avoid the Thanksgiving exodus of students from campus.

I have to be on the road to Iowa City at 7:00 a.m., so I'm afraid that this is a poor man's version of the OPC. Please have your picks in by 11:00 EST Saturday.

What ever happened to the age old maxim that if you're going to lose, lose early?

The Obligatory Predictions Competition - Week 10

Man, we've been spoiled. This is the first week in as long as I can remember that we're without a major game in the conference race.

Results for Week 9 of the Obligatory Predictions Competition are live. Please take a moment to congratulate our weekly winner ckmneon, who after declaring "there are absolutely no easy picks up there," went on to sweep the games for a perfect 7 points. Our Week 10 picks will be up tomorrow.

About the only thing I can promise is we're in for a wild ride.

The Obligatory Predictions Competition - Week 9

66

A lack of separation last week has resulted in an even tighter concentration at the top of the leaderboard. Will this be the week someone makes their move? I can think of at least 20 people who should pay no attention to what I write below this line. Picks are due by 11:00 a.m. EST tomorrow as always. You can thank Graham for the weird games.

The End Game - Predicting the 20 Most Likely BCS National Championship Matchups

Twelve months later, the national landscape couldn't look any less oligopic. Every team in the Top 12 of the BCS standings has a well publicized achilles heel. Here are the Top 20 scenarios -- arranged from most to least likely.

Week 7 results are up on the scoreboard. Thanks to Texas and Wisconsin, for the second week in a row 3 of 5 was good enough to stay ahead of the pack. Double standards aside, even Buckeye fans like myself are salivating at the prospect of a multi-dimensional conference race.

The results from Week 6 of the Obligatory Predictions Competition are updated on the masthead. This is the first time in the three year history of the competition that a 1 point week was above average. In other words, pat yourself on the back if you got any games right. And congratulate Pariahwulfen, who somehow managed to wrestle victory from the jaws of defeat, earning 6 points on this mess of a week. It's more true now than ever: this is anyone's game. Week 7 picks will be up tomorrow.

Big Ten Back on Top

9

For the first time in 40 weeks, the Big Ten boasts the number one team in college football...at least for now. Along with No. 1 Ohio State, Michigan State (11th Coaches, 13th AP, Iowa (13th Coaches, 15th AP), Wisconsin (16th Coaches, 18th AP), and Michigan (24th Coaches, unranked AP) made the cut. This sets up another huge week in the Midwest.

Nebraska Announces Plans to Expand Memorial Stadiun

15

Unlike our friends below the Mason-Dixon, we like our stadiums big in Big Ten country. Nebraska must have noticed, because today the University disclosed plans to spend $56 million on an expansion of Memorial Stadium that will add 5,000 seats and additional luxury suites as well as three-story lobby on the east side of the stadium. The Big Ten is already home to three of the four largest stadiums in the United States: Ohio Stadium, Michigan Stadium, and Beaver Stadium. Memorial Stadium, which boasts the longest sellout streak in college football (dating to 1962) will be a welcome addition to the conference's armada of historic venues.

The Obligatory Predictions Competition - Week 6

The first week in conference play gave us a solid upset in East Lansing. Will the Spartans keep rolling in Ann Arbor? Get your picks in by tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. EST. It's still anyone's game.

Three Things We Know, and Three Things We Don't

Now that we're a solid week into conference play, it's time to take a look at what we know as well as what we don't in the Big Ten.

Finally. The Obligatory Predictions Competition Scoreboard is completely up to date. The results through Week 5 are proudly displayed on the masthead. I sincerely apologize for getting a week behind on the scoring. Things have been a bit crazy. A huge thanks goes out to our resident Good Samaritan, community member talonk. Without being asked, he took it upon himself to grade Weeks 4 and 5. I received the results in an Excel spreadsheet this afternoon. It was a tremendous favor, and I truly couldn't have had this done without him. As always, congratulations to our Week 5 winners: Bama Hawkeye, Findlay Buckeye, SpartyParty, PurdueMatt, Spartan D, Ski U Mah Gopher, LosiBoiler, psuwxman, BoilerTMill, DMAN2303, Dan TrueBlue, and Tailgate and Cover. Our Week 6 picks will be up Friday morning.

The Obligatory Predictions Competition - Week 4

Believe it or not, it's time to put the first quarter of the season in the rear view mirror. If this weekend's slate of games in the Big Ten is any indication it won't be missed.

You're going to love what we've got in store for you...

It's Lonely at the Top

92

Although the league's ceiling (Ohio State) might be a few floors higher than it was in 2007, 2008, and 2009, and its middle tier (Northwestern, Michigan State, Michigan, Penn State) is an opportunistic 11-1, we still lack the single most defining feature of an elite league: multiple power brokers.
