Canal Street Chronicles Virtue Untested is No Virtue at all, or Bountygate

This is disgusting. It's disgusting and it sucks. After having gone through what our city has been through, having so little to look forward to except for Saints games, having given so much to this team and its players, I feel completely and absolutely betrayed.

We looked up to our Saints as if they were the real thing, honest to God Saints. And what did they do with that trust and admiration? Did they not think how this would make us look when this came to light? Was there no consideration for us? That after having to hear the same old shit from other teams' bad fans (you know the kind I'm talking about, the small minority who you're all embarrassed by) about how "the calls always seem to go our way", or "trashy city, trashy team" and all that crap, now we have to deal with this?

Honestly it was easier to get made fun of for supporting the terrible teams of the past, and I would much prefer it over having to carry the burden of supporting a team that actively sought to incentivize the injuring of opponents.

Let me speak now directly to fellow Saints fans. Do not attempt to justify this or absolve our organization from wrongdoing. What the Saints have done is wrong and unsportsmanlike, and we deserve all the punishment we get. This is not what an organization that follows the ideals we claim to be all about should look like. We'll get past this eventually, yes. But in the meantime, let's show everyone that we, the fans at least, can walk the walk when it comes to integrity and sportsmanship.

And now if I can speak to fans of other teams: In the past many of you have expressed sympathy for our team and our city. We recognize that many of you have cheered for us at times, and wished us well. I sincerely and desperately hope that this will not color your opinion of New Orleans as a whole, or the people who live there, or fans like myself. We know this is wrong, and we hate that it happened. Remember though, that we fans had nothing to do with it. Please don't punish us for something we had no control over.

In short. Heads should roll over this. Virtue untested is no virtue at all.

Canal Street Chronicles CSC Playoff Pick 'em - Divisional Round! Win a $5 McD's gift card on me!

PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO REC THE POST IF YOU'RE PLAYING. IT GIVES MORE PEOPLE A CHANCE TO GET IN ON THE FUN.

So most of you know the rules by now! Point values will be doubled this week as the picks should theoretically be harder to make, which also means that those who missed out on the game, or had a bad week last week still have an opportunity to catch up! So here are my picks and the format model you should follow! A deeper look at the rules, plus the standings below the jump!

8 points: Packers over Giants
6 points: Ravens over Texans
4 points: Saints over 49ers
2 points: Patriots over Broncos

Canal Street Chronicles CSC Playoff Pick 'em! Win a $5 Gift Card to McD's. (NEW UP TO MINUTE STANDINGS)

Who's up for a little game? I know I am! Many of you might be familiar with office playoff pools, and things of that nature. Well, this game is similar. I know it's also a little short notice, but each week you'll have a chance to get in the game if you were too late in week one. Add to that the fact that you'll have plenty of time to get your picks in for tomorrow's games as well. So now that that's out of the way, here are the rules.

Everyone makes picks on the games that they were early enough to play for. Once a certain game starts, the picks for that game are locked and no one can make any picks on it. You must assign up to four confidence points to each of your picks in descending order of confidence. So for example, if you're most confident that the Saints will beat the Lions you'd assign that game four points. For your next most confident pick, you're taking the Steelers over the Fighting Tebows, so you'd assign that game three confidence points and so on. Everybody with me? Refer below to my picks for a guide on format. Cool. And take note here, that the point values will go up as we get deeper into the playoffs, so you're never out of it!

I've got a five dollar McDonalds Gift Card with the winner's name on it! No entry fee! So come on and get your picks in!

My Picks:
4 points: Saints over Lions
3 points: Steelers over Broncos
2 points: Giants over Falcons
1 point: Texans over Bengals

Also, if you wouldn't mind, give it a rec so everyone can see the game!

Canal Street Chronicles New chant inspired by Brees's record breaking performance! Let's get it started!

So here's one thing you might not know about me: I'm a huge soccer fan. One of the things I love most about soccer, especially in Europe, is when all the fans in the stadium join together to serenade their teams. 50,000 voices all come together in one song, unified in support of their boys. Needless to say, this does quite a number for the atmosphere at the ground. Why can't we have something like this in OUR stadia? If any team's fans can pull it off, it MUST be New Orleans. Our rich musical history, unified fan base, and the general cleverness of our fans makes us uniquely qualified to send chills down the spines of our opponents with our voices. So, in that spirit, and in honor of Drew's performance last night, I submit to you, my fellow Who Dats, a chant to the tune of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home". Help us out! Spread the word, and sing it loud!

The Saints Go Marching (Following Number Nine)

He played in college at Purdue, Drew Brees, Drew Brees
He played in San Diego, too, Drew Brees, Drew Brees
But now he has a happy home, down here in the Superdome
And the Saints go marching following number nine

In the Super Bowl he beat the Colts, Drew Brees, Drew Brees
Aren't you glad you left the Bolts, Drew Brees, Drew Brees
Manning, Brady, They're OK, but we'll take Breesus any day
And the Saints go marching following number nine

Canal Street Chronicles Shots from my trip to the Colts game! Costume Pictures! Yay!

So as a gift to myself and my wonderful girlfriend, who happens to be a Colts fan (I'll expect you all to be kind. We've been in their position before!) I went ahead and ponied up the cash to get some seats in the Mercedez-Benz Superdome for the Saints game against her beloved Colts. We figured since it was the last home game before Halloween, that we'd dress up in costumes and really do this thing right! I decided to go as a Voodoo Priest (not the most original idea, I know, but it came out great), and she went as a Colts Gladiator type thing. I thought some of you might enjoy some of the pictures we took before and after the "game". Take a look after the jump!

Canal Street Chronicles Going once! Going twice! Sold! The CSC Auction (and keeper and PPR) League!

So most of you by now have probably gone ahead and joined your traditional snake-draft leagues and are furiously planning your strategies! Well, how about adding another dimension to your draft prep? Auction leagues can be some of the most fun, and most rewarding systems out there. Going into the draft every team has a shot at any player! How many times have you said to yourself, "Boy, I wish I could grab Adrian Peterson, but I have the 10th pick!"? Well, now you don't have to worry about that!

I'm going to run our community's first (as far as I know) auction (and keeper PPR) league! I'm still undecided as to how many teams we'll field, but I'll determine that based on interest. So if you want in let me know in the comments by leaving an e-mail address you feel comfortable making public. League particulars after the jump!

This is also going out to my Facebook and Twitter feeds, so if you've come to this post via either of those, you're welcome to join as well! Sign up for Canal Street Chronicles and let me know you want in, or contact me via those services!

Canal Street Chronicles Market research.

So I recently saw a post in the fanposts section about t-shirt designs for some of the members of our illustrious Canal Street Chronicles. That reminded me that I had designed a shirt with the intent of selling them on game days around the Superdome area where everyone tailgates. I can't believe I never posted it here, so I guess with the season (apparently) starting soon, I'd go ahead and post it for you folks to give me your input on. The response I get from you folks will likely determine whether or not I actually go through the trouble of getting these made and selling them. So what I need to know from you guys is this: Do you like it? How would you improve it? Would you buy one?

Anfield Asylum The View from the Kop (Pictures from my Anfield Tour)

So if you read my last post, you know that I'm a recent LFC convert, and one of the biggest things that pulled me in that direction was the tour I took of the humble and glorious Anfield. What a treasure! Here are some photos from my tour!

Anfield Asylum Hi folks!

Just wanted to introduce myself as I'm new here at the Asylum! I'm a recent convert to the Liverpool FC way, and I'm glad to have a place to talk about the Reds with fellow fans as it can get quite lonely down here in Baton Rouge, LA, USA! Thankfully though, it was my girlfriend, and a trip to Anfield who turned me red after having been lost in the wilderness of supporting the Chelski. So, needless to say, it's finally nice to support a team with a clear conscience and I could not be more excited about the upcoming season!

You'll never walk alone.

Canal Street Chronicles Saints and Sinners Off-season Edition Week 6: Do You Hear that Fezzik? That is the Sound of Ultimate Suffering.

Paging Dr. Miracle Max? I mean really, all hope is lost. This is the end of the world sports fans. Lockout: Armageddon edition. Yes, the two sides in the NFL labor dispute have been careening in this direction for weeks now, and we fans are the ones who will end up suffering. What little hope remains can only be found in the consideration of the idea that perhaps the season is only mostly dead at this point, which is still a little alive. And there's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead, which should cheer all of us up at least a little, because once a season is all dead, there's only one thing you can do. Look through its pockets for loose change, and meet me after the jump for another round of Saints and Sinners.

Canal Street Chronicles Saints And Sinners Offseason Edition Week 4: Don't You Forget About Me

Whoops! Where does the time go? Sorry that this week's S&S has been late, but hey... It IS carnival time, and screws fall out all the time. The world is an imperfect place. Everyone deserves a break during the most wonderful time of the year, except for this week's Sinners who can eat my shorts after the jump!

Canal Street Chronicles Saints and Sinners Offseason Edition Week 3: ...And Don't Call Me Shirley!

Dad: Hey, son. Did you hear the Saints terminated their contract with Jeremy Shockey?
Me: What's that?
Dad: It's a legal document binding two parties to an agreement, but that's not important now...

Ain't that just the way the world works? I come in here last week with a perfectly good reference to Back to the Future not realizing that this week the Saints would go out and release Jeremy Shockey. Yeah, he wears number 88. As in "When this baby hits 88 miles per hour..." Shocking! (See what I did there?) Whatever, I'm over it. Well, I'm over the used up reference, but I don't know if I'm quite over the parting of ways between the organization and Jeremy Shockey. I mean, I worry, though mostly about what's going to happen when all the (beloved) redneck Saints fans realize they can't wear their Shockey jerseys anymore (e-mails can be addressed to Dave Cariello), but here's hoping we get past that. It's time to pick up the white courtesy phone and delve into another Saints and Sinners! No, the white phone.

Canal Street Chronicles It's more boring than cricket, but... (Fantasy baseball leagues).

Spring is nearly upon us, ladies and gentlemen. And while that typically means sod all for football, it's that time of year when once again the whizz-pop of five and a quarter ounce rawhide spheres colliding with leather based protective hand coverings signals the start of another excruciatingly long season of that great American pastime boondoggle, baseball. And given that we may or may not have a full season of football (and fantasy football) to look forward to, I figured that it might be fun for us to have the first ever CSC fantasy baseball league. I will run the competition, and I will do it using ESPN's service. Complain all you want, but it's what I know. It'll be a standard scoring head-to-head league, and the number of teams will depend on interest. If you are interested in joining leave a note in the comments with a way that I can invite you to the league (preferably e-mail). Good luck to all those who decide they have enough disposable time for fantasy baseball this year!

Canal Street Chronicles Saints and Sinners Off-Season Edition Week 2: When This Baby Hits 88 Miles Per Hour...

Labor talks, labor talks, labor talks, labor talks, labor talks, labo... (Record scratch!) Sorry, folks. For a minute there I thought I was writing for ESPN. Look, it's not that it's not a big issue. It clearly is, but I personally haven't had the patience (or work ethic) to actually do any research on it and come to any informed conclusions backed up by insightful, well... insight.

So in light of that, I'll stick to what I really and truly know: time travel. Yes, that's right. Time travel. It seems that most of the stories in our little Saints bubble this week have more to do with days gone by than they do today. So, if you've got your time circuits ready, and a way to generate 1.21 jiggawatts of power, floor it with me into this week's Saints and Sinners!

Canal Street Chronicles Saints and Sinners Offseason Edition Week 1: We'll Always Have Dallas

It's quiet. Almost too quiet. With the Packers' victory in Sunday's Super Bowl, an eerie silence has descended over the NFL. It's thick like a fog that rolls in with the morning and makes you wonder if it might never lift. What we're witnessing here is the calm before the storm of the NFL's upcoming labor dispute. Let's not kid ourselves, Saints fans. Sunday's game could (emphasis on the could, I am an optimist after all - when it suits me) have shown us the last snap of football we may see for quite some time. With that in mind, let's take a look at some of the good and bad news around the league (and maybe popular culture) in a new weekly feature, Saints and Sinners. Follow me into the breach!

Battle Red Blog Represent Battle Red Blog in Madden '11!

Hello good people of SBN!

Do you play Madden ’11 on the XBOX360? Do you want to represent your favorite team in an online franchise mode with representatives of the other 31 NFL blogs? Of course you do! I do, too! That’s why I’ve started the (extremely) unofficial SBN Madden ’11 online franchise! You can choose your blog’s representative however you like! Tournament? Good idea! Senior member? Fine by me! Rock, paper, scissors? A little hard to do online, but be my guest! The point is that there can only be one (unfortunately). I will serve as commissioner of this league and will also represent my home blog, Canal Street Chronicles, and will therefore be playing as the Saints.

So, think you can handle it? Once your blog has decided who it’s representative will be, leave me a comment here, e-mail me at joseph.stern@cox.net, or message me through XBOX Live at the gamertag of “AnImaginaryGod”.

Hope to see you online, and good luck!

Canal Street Chronicles Madden 11 Online Franchise Starting

Hey folks, I know this topic may be passé at the moment, but I've just acquired a copy of Madden '11 for my birthday, and I'm inviting all members with XBOX 360 copies to join in. The league name is "Your city Your team". It has 32 spaces, which may or may not fill. Apologies for already picking the Saints, but there will be a fantasy draft at the beginning of the season, so don't feel like you're already beaten. Any questions can be posted here or sent to my gamertag: AnImaginaryGod.

Hope to see you guys online!
