NBA Playoffs Open Thread 4-28
Derrick Rose, the best player on a contending team, suffered a serious non-contact injury to his left knee (ACL). Yikes. That definitely calls to mind Webber's 2003 injury against Dallas.
NBA.com is once again hosting the Drive to the Finals fantasy game. I played it last year. It's not terribly exciting at first, but it picks up toward the end of the playoffs when you're forced to choose less celebrated players like Mario Chalmers or whoever. The details can be found here:
http://fantasy.nba.com/drive/entries/20301/picks/mine
You can create your own public or private league or just play on your own and measure your scores against the TNT analysts. I created a public league yesterday--F*ck the Maloofs II: The Legend of Curly's Gold. (This is the sequel to the league I started last year, F*ck the Maloofs.) You can find it by searching for "Maloofs" in the All Leagues section. Everyone's invited.
Bee: Thompson is likeliest of Kings' free agents to stay with team
Donte and Terrence also express a desire to stay in Sacramento.
Bee: Sacramento may get new arena, but it will be without Kings
Stern's contempt for the Maloofs is fairly naked here.
Ed. Note - The Bee also reports that according to a source, the Kings have about $205 million in debt.
Bee: Mormon fans have faith in Kings draft pick Jimmer Fredette
With news like this, who needs the NBA Summer League?

Voisin: Ex-King Barry becomes All-Star broadcaster
Ailene finds Jon to be smooth and passionate. She especially loves how he makes her scream when he goes at it like a jackhammer.
(Actually not the worst read ever.)
Voisin: Ex-King Richmond makes rare appearance at reunion
Ailene calls Mitch a fatass.

Bee: Hopes soar as Sacramento unveils arena proposal
Jubilant officials emerged from a hearing at Sacramento City Hall on Thursday and proclaimed the region is further along in its quest to build a new sports and entertainment arena than it ever has been before.
Breton: Arena efforts could unite fractious Sacramento
Marcos tries yet again to get through to the unwashed masses that comprise the Bee's readership.
Bee: Kings talk to many guards, including UCONN's Walker
"I hear they want a point guard so they can move 'Reke off the ball," Walker said of Tyreke Evans. "That's something that would be pretty cool. I know 'Reke. We grew up together playing each other in the all-star games. That would be a cool experience."
Ed. Note: Kings also talked to Jimmer Fredette, Norris Cole, Alec Burks, Tristan Thompson, Klay Thompson, Josh Selby, Nikola Vucevic, and Kyle Singler yesterday.
Voisin: A sense of urgency marks this offseason
Though team officials are at least mildly intrigued with a few players who could drop, among them Brandon Knight, Enes Kanter and Bismack Biyombo, some within the organization would prefer to package the pick in a multiplayer swap that involves young, seasoned veterans and addresses the team's other two major weaknesses – small forward and depth on the front line.
Voisin: Kudos for sending mayor to NBA draft lottery
Joe and Gavin discuss their apparently warm relationship with KJ and the upcoming draft lottery. KJ also recalls his own draft night experience.
Bee: Sacramento Mayor Johnson drums up arena support in Placer visit
The mayor won kudos from regional leaders for engaging them on the issue and doing so on their own turf – at a joint meeting of the Roseville, Lincoln, Auburn and Rocklin chambers of commerce, held in a Roseville hotel conference room.

Bee: Mayor, Maloofs, fans celebrate Kings in Sacramento for another year
In a prepared statement, the mayor's office said today "is a preliminary meeting to begin the process of engaging Kings' ownership in furtherance of developing a critical path to a public-private partnership that will focus on a new entertainment and sports complex that will be economically transformative for the Capital region."
(And it comes with a free frogurt!)
Bee: NBA starts image makeover for Sacramento Kings
(NBA executive vice president) Granger's team is advising the Kings organization on executing sponsorship and ticket sales and other nuts-and-bolts issues. It's also trying to help the Kings repair their image following the Maloofs' well-publicized attempt to move the Kings to Anaheim.
Voisin: Kings' arena drama not lost on Westphal
Westphal, who monitored developments closely, said he was relieved to hear from Kings co-owner Gavin Maloof early Monday. Almost as importantly, the Maloofs reiterated plans to aggressively address the team's weakness via free agency and the upcoming NBA draft.
Bee: Facing big offseason, Petrie sees Kings' potential
Jason Jones interviews Geoff Petrie. Topics include the finish to the season, free agency, Westphal, the draft, and our SFs.
"Maloof" only gets mentioned once!
News10: Maloofs undecided about Kings move; Arena plans crumbling?
There does not appear to be more than one source behind this story. I don't know what source would have intimate knowledge of both the Maloofs' situation and the regional effort to build an arena...
Seems highly dubious.
Bee: Orange County billionaire sweetens deal for Kings
This article is distinct from the similarly titled one posted by ASSN on Thursday.
It takes a closer look at (1) Samueli's inducements; (2) the process of reviewing relocation bids; and (3) and past relocation attempts in the NBA.
If it's the lead story, there might actually be something here.
Bee: Sacramento Kings owners reportedly still on fence about Anaheim move
The source said it appears unlikely at this point that team owners will come to a conclusion before Monday, the day set by NBA officials as the deadline for the team to request permission to relocate to Anaheim for next season.
Bee: While Kings fans plead for team to remain, Orange County interest borders on boredom; 1,700 signed up for ticket waiting list
To put the 1,700 number in better perspective, consider the reaction by Sacramento when it was announced in that the Kings were indeed headed out of Kansas City and to Sacramento for the 1985-86 season. More than 25,000 people immediately jammed up the waiting list for tickets, and Sacramento and the outlining region wasn't nearly as populated then as it is now.
Marcos Breton: How does mayor market better than the Maloofs?
It's not the market, it's the ownership.
Bee: Mayor touts corporate deposits as 'down payment' on the NBA's future in Sacramento
Calling it 'a historic day in Sacramento,' Mayor Kevin Johnson emerged this morning from a two-hour meeting with NBA officials and more than two dozen local business leaders willing to make deposits on multi-year sponsorship deals and ticket purchases for the Sacramento Kings.
Ailene Voisin: Will Stern hold sway over the Maloofs?
In which our heroine examines the relationship between David Stern and the Maloofs, touches on Stern's history with antitrust suits, and underscores the NBA's desire to become more stable.
Not a bad read.

Anaheim waits for NBA's official word (WARNING: OC Register article)
"Francisco Garcia, 35, an NBA fan from Fullerton, said he is eagerly awaiting word on whether the Kings are coming. 'I just find it hard to believe that when the smoke clears, Anaheim won't look like the best option for the NBA,' he said."
It appears we have a traitor in our midst...
No real news here. Just interesting to see how the other half lives.
Sacramento corporations to make deposits on pledges to Kings.
"Details of the meeting are still being worked out, but it is expected to be held Tuesday morning and be followed by a press conference. At least 30 business representatives are expected to attend the meeting."
