SB Nation Los Angeles 2012 NFL Draft: Three USC Players Drafted, More Sign With Teams As Unrestricted Free Agents

The NFL draft has ended and USC had three draft eligible prospects signed.

Offensive tackle Matt Kalil and defensive end Nick Perry will both head north as both were drafted in the first round by the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers, respectively. On the third day, tight end/full back Rhett Ellison was selected by the Vikings in the fourth round.

No other USC Trojan was drafted.

But that doesn't mean players can't sign with teams as players can sign as unrestricted free agents.

Running back Marc Tyler, who was hampered by injuries and had notable character issues, was signed by the Green Bay Packers. Tyler rushed for 568 yards this year on 122 attempts, good for a 4.7 average. He had 913 yards last year.

Other seniors that weren't drafted, but signed by NFL teams include senior linebacker Chris Galippo (Indianapolis Colts), senior wide receiver Brandon Carswell (Oakland Raiders), and defensive tackle DaJohn Harris (Tennessee Titans). Senior defensive tackle, Armond Armstead, did not sign with a team, but is expected too.

Whether suffering from career threatening injuries or character issues, having seven prospects sign with an NFL team is a good sign for a program. USC is expected to have more prospects signed in the earlier rounds in the 2013 draft.

SB Nation Los Angeles 2012 Pac-12 Tournament: Colorado Vs. Arizona: Buffaloes Win It In A Thriller

There was a bit of magic today as No. 6 Colorado Buffaloes stamped its name on the ticket to the NCAA tournament by defeating No. 4 Arizona Wildcats in a thrilling matchup that was close in the closing minutes of the game.

However, the Buffaloes held off a furious rally by the Wildcats and won the Pac-12 tournament today 53-51. The win also marked the first Pac-12 championship won by the Buffaloes in their first year in the league.

With the game seemingly going away from Arizona’s hands, Wildcats’ leading scorers, Jesse Perry, Kyle Fogg, and Solomon Hill tried desperately to get a lead back with 8:25 left to go with the Buffs leading 50-38.

However with three seconds left, Fogg could not convert his three-point jumper and that was the difference as Colorado held on.

Buffaloes’ Spencer Dinwiddie, led a poor shooting offense (38%) with 14 points, but was 100 percent from three-point range.

As bad as Colorado’s shooting was, it was a dog fight on the defensive side of the ball as the Buffs held Arizona to only 36 percent shooting.

SB Nation Los Angeles Pac-12 Tournament Score Update: Oregon State Vs. Arizona: Wildcats Roar Back Huge In Second Half

The Arizona Wildcats trailed the Oregon State Beavers by seven at halftime, but stormed back with a vengeance in the second half outscoring the Beavers 45-27 to win the game and advance to the Pac-12 tournament final by the final score of 72-61.

Wildcats Jesse Perry and Kyle Fogg started the game off slowly in the first half but took it up a notch in the second half. Perry finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds while Kyle Fogg had 22 points to lead all scorers.

As Fogg and Perry stepped up their game, Beaver’s Jared Cunningham and Devon Collier went cold, with Cunningham going 1-8 in field goals in the second half.

The Wildcats shot poorly in the first half, shooting 37.5 percent from the field, but the huge second half increased it 47 percent. The Wildcats more than doubled their score in the second half, scoring from 27 in the first to 45 in the second.

SB Nation Los Angeles 2012 Pac-12 Tournament, Utah Vs. Colorado: Buffaloes Beat Up Utes With Ease, 53-41

Colorado Buffaloes’ forward Andre Roberson cut through the Utah Utes’ defense for 20 points on nine shot attempts as he led his team to win their first tournament game during their first season in the Pac-12, 53-41.

The Utes are one of the worst teams in the nation, but kept up with the Buffaloes in the first half ending the half down two.

Utah center Jason Washburn scored 11 points to lead the Utes in scoring, but that was on 13 shot attempts. No other player from Utah scored more than 10 points.

Both teams shot ugly from the floor with each team making only 35 percent of their shots. The Buffaloes did get to the line more than the Utes and shot at a higher percentage clip at the charity stripe.

The Buffs will face No. 3 Oregon Ducks tomorrow at 8:30 p.m.

SB Nation Los Angeles Pac-12 Tournament 2012, Washington State Vs. Oregon State Score: Beavers Knock Out Cougars, 69-64

The Oregon State Beavers gave up a 24-8 lead to start the game, but key free throws late in the game iced the win for the Beavers as they knock out No. 8 seed Washington State Cougars to advance in the Pac-12 tournament by a score of 69-64.

OSU's Devon Collier was hot all game, hitting seven of his eight field goal attempts to lead all scorers with 19 points. Teammate, Eric moreland, notched a double-double in the win with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Cougars' Brok Motum was efficient with a solid performance having 18 points on 6-10 shooting and seven rebounds. However, Reggie Moore picked a wrong game to shoot 19 percent from the field as he made only three field goals in 16 attempts.

The game was fairly tight until the final minute when OSU's Joe Burton made a driving layup to pull ahead by five, 66-61. Cougars couldn't make a field goal for the rest of the game.

The Beavers will face No. 1 Washington Huskies tomorrow.

SB Nation Los Angeles Ducks Vs. Lightning: Ducks Lose On Big Night By Steve Stamkos, 3-2

The Anaheim Ducks knew they had the tall order to defend the hottest scorer in the NHL in Steven Stamkos on Tuesday night when they faced the Tampa Bay Lightning at Tampa Bay Times Forum, Tampa, Fla. However, Stamkos had other plans in mind.

Stamkos scored his league-leading 41st and 42nd goals of the season and, for good measure, added an assist as the the Lightning defeated the Ducks 3-2.

The Ducks found themselves in a hole in the first period when Stamkos put the Lightning on the board up 1-0 when he nudged a puck past goalie Jonas Hiller on the power play, 28 seconds into the game.

Ducks’ Cam Fowler was penalized for hooking Stamkos. The Lightning would score again in the first period on another Stamkos goal.

Anaheim’s Saku Koivu rebounded with a goal 40 seconds into the 2nd period on an assist by Bobby Ryan and Fowler to put the Ducks on the scoreboard, however two minutes later, Lightning’s Tedd Purcell would score his 15th goal of the season to put the game in reach for the Ducks.

Ryan would later score his 22nd goal of the season in the period as the Ducks were shutout in the 3rd period.

Hiller had 13 saves while opposing goalie Mathieu Garon had 28 saves.

The Ducks will continue to the road trip and head to Raleigh, North Carolina where they will face the Hurricanes on Thursday night.

SB Nation Los Angeles USC Football Signing Day 2012: Trojans Miss on Kyle Murphy, Who Signs With Stanford

As if the offensive line class for Stanford couldn't get any better with the signings of top tackles, Andrus Peat, Joshua Garnett, and Brandon Fanaika, whom were all All-American selections, the Cardinal received a pleasant surprise with the signing of Kyle Murphy, the No. 3 rated offensive tackle prospect and No. 19 overall on Rivals.com.

Murphy is also the second-best prospect in the state of California.

The product of San Clemente High School, San Clemente, Calif., juggled two schools on his final list, USC and Stanford, before ultimately committing to the Cardinal. The commitment from Andrus Peat, who signed with Stanford earlier today, was thought to have shifted Murphy's decision in favor of USC as recruiting experts thought Murphy would sign with the Cardinal. But those thoughts were put to rest when Murphy flipped the Cardinal hat on at his announcement ceremony at his school.

The thought was that way before USC came closing in on his trail after Murphy officially visited the Trojans on the weekend of Jan. 21.

USC had its last in-home visit with Murphy on Saturday and Pat Haden was believed to be part of the visit.

SB Nation Los Angeles National Signing Day 2012: Cyler Miles Stays Committed To Washington, Spurns USC

Cyler Miles, the No. 2 quarterback in the country, according to Rivals.com, was reportedly wavering his commitment from the University of Washington and considering USC, but Miles announced at his school today that he will honor his original commitment and sticking with the Huskies.

The Army All-American chose to open his recruitment after former offensive coordinator, Doug Nussmeier, left UW for Alabama late last year.

After performing well at the Army All-American bowl, USC discussed an official visit with Miles in San Antonio, Tex., which Miles confirmed to do. A Jan. 21 visit, which wasn't openly reported until after, brought more interest to USC. Miles hosted Lane Kiffin and staff for an in-home visit soon afterwards.

In the end, Miles had been leaning with the Huskies too long of time not to decommit.

SB Nation Los Angeles National Signing Day 2012: USC Trojans Sign Zach Banner, Jordan Simmons, Max Tuerk, Miss On Andrus Peat

The USC Trojans add huge bodies on the offensive line as they officially signed Zach Banner, Jordan Simmons, and Max Tuerk.

Banner is the talented of the bunch with the higher ranking of the three at No. 16 nationally and the No. 2 overall left tackle prospect. The Lakewood High School product from Lakewood, Wash. has unofficially visited the Trojans several times last year.

Banner, who is a 5-star prospect, officially visited the Trojans on Jan. 21 and raved about his visit there, which probably sealed the deal for his signature.

Simmons, another 5-star prospect and No. 25 overall prospect on Rivals.com, will mostly likely compete for a spot inside the line. The 6-5, 330 pound prospect was exceptional in the Nike camps last year. Simmons, who played all positions on the line at Crespi high school, Encino, Calif., was an Army All-American selection, but tore his MCL during practices.

Tuerk, Army All-American, No. 46 overall prospect on Rivals.com, committed early in the recruiting trail, after giving the USC staff a verbal after being offered a scholarship after his performance from the Nike camp in Palo Alto, Calif.

Tuerk was the star of highly rated offensive line that of Santa Margarita High School, Santa Margarita, Calif., who won their division state championship last year.

Though the Trojans get commitments from three of the highly rated tackles in the country, they finished second in the trail for highly touted prospect in Andrus Peat. Peat, from Tempe, Ariz., is the No. 6 offensive tackle prospect on Rivals.com and was believed to challenge the vacant left tackle spot right away if signed at USC.

SB Nation Los Angeles USC Football Signing Day: Trojans Add Signatures From Gerald Bowman, Jabari Ruffin, Devian Shelton

The USC Trojans have secured some signings from prospects Gerald Bowman, Jabari Ruffin, and Devian Shelton.

Bowman comes in as a safety prospect from Woodland Hills Community College. He was originally set to sign as an early enrollee and therefore sign as part of the 2011 class, but late finishes to his classes resulted as a mid-year enrollee, which counts towards the 2012 class.

Bowman is the top junior college prospect on Rivals.com and a 4-star prospect. As a big hitter, scouts project him to play at strong safety.

Ruffin hails from Downey, Calif. and attended Downey High School. According to Rivals.com, Ruffin is the top outside linebacker prospect and No. 40 overall prospect. An Army All-American, Ruffin has incredible speed for his size, which benefits the USC defense against spread offenses. Ruffin committed to the Trojans early on and recruited for USC along the way.

Shelton was just recently offered by the Trojans, who was committed to the Oregon State Beavers before signing. Shelton is an Inglewood high school prospect who mans the wide receiver, cornerback, and running back position. It is unclear which position the Trojans offered Shelton as, but cornerback is where he is projected.

SB Nation Los Angeles VIDEO: Nelson Agholor Picks USC Trojans On National Signing Day 2012

New USC Trojans signee and wide receiver, Nelson Agholor, will be under the tutelage of star receivers Robert Woods and Marqise Lee as the Trojans steal another prospect from the state of Florida.

Credit goes to defensive coordinator, Monte Kiffin, who was the main recruiter for Agholor and Florida regional recruiter. Agholor, a Tampa, Fla. product, has stated the reputation that Kiffin has in the area when he was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Although scouts say his highest ceiling is at wide receiver, Agholor can play two other positions at running back and safety. Agholor was mostly used at running back this past season playing at Berkley Prep., Tampa, Fla.

The coaching staff may give Agholor a look at running back as the roster is thin with the departures of senior Marc Tyler and freshman Amir Carlisle, who transferred to Notre Dame.

SB Nation Los Angeles Nelson Agholor Commits To USC: Trojans Steal Another Top Florida Prospect

The USC Trojans continue its hot streak of receiving letter of intents from out of state prospects as the latest comes from top Floridian prospect, Nelson Agholor, the No. 18 overall player on Rivals.com and No. 3 wide receiver.

The wide receiver from Tampa, Fla. has stated from his sophomore year that USC was his “dream school” as the Trojans were the first team to offer him.

Agholor is a versatile athlete that can play three positions: Wide receiver, running back, and safety. Scouts say Agholor has the talent to star at any of those three positions, but feel that he has higher upside at wide out.

With a healthy stock of receivers already on the Trojans roster, Agholor will have to compete for playing time in his freshman year. However, Agholor is a rare talent with break-away speed, long arms, and elusive when open.

Agholor praises his main recruiter, Monte Kiffin, as he has an great reputation around the Tampa area.

SB Nation Los Angeles Leonard Williams To USC: Trojans Snag Prospect From Florida

Leonard Williams, the No. 53 overall prospect on Rivals.com and the No. 5 overall strongside defensive end, will sign his letter of intent to USC.

The signing comes off as a surprise as the product from Mainland high school, Daytona, Fla. was strongly considering Auburn University and Florida Unversity. Swaying away a top prospect from the opposite side of the nation is always a tough process, but top recruiter Ed Orgeron is always a threat to do that.

Williams will join a young defensive line roster and looks to play at the end spot, although he played all defensive line positions in high school.

The prospect was selected to participate at the Under Armour All-American bowl and collected two sacks in the game.

Williams first had interest at USC after unofficially visiting last summer when the Trojans hosted its annual Risings Star camp, which hosts some of the top prospects in the nation to run drills on campus.

SB Nation Los Angeles USC Football Recruiting: Vatuvei Spurns USC, Signs With Huskies

Pio Vatuvei, longtime USC commit, decommitted this morning from the Trojans and will sign with the Washington Huskies.

Vatuvei, the No. 145 overall player and No. 11 defensive end on Rivals.com, made noise when he competed well against elite players last year at The Opening, a training camp held at Oregon. His performance led to an USC offer.

Vatuvei committed to the Trojans on Aug. 1, but said he would use his official visits. He visited Cal on Jan. 14 and enjoyed his visit and would consider the Bears.

After Lupoi’s departure to the Huskies, Vatuvei set his sights at USC. However, his relationship with Lupoi remained strong, which was evidenced in the signing.

Washington receives a 6-2, 265 prospect that can play both defensive line positions. The product of Patterson High School in Patterson, Calif. hopes to play at the end spot.

In the second half, both teams played a seesaw affair as there were seven lead changes in the fourth quarter with the Pacers ultimately going on top.

The Lakers will host the Clippers on Wednesday as they hope to end their three game losing streak. Gametime is at 7:30 p.m. PT.

SB Nation Los Angeles USC Vs. Oregon: Missed Field Goal Dooms Ducks Rally, Trojans Win At Autzen, 38-35

Since Chip Kelly took the helm as head coach, he is unbeatable at Autzen Stadium, handily beating visiting teams as they come in facing the raucous Oregon fans. But head coach Lane Kiffin's first visit at Autzen Stadium proved otherwise as his USC Trojans stopped the rallying Oregon Ducks and defeat them, 38-35.

Matt Barkley led the charge, completing 26 of 35 yards for 323 yards and four touchdown passes with one interception.  Two of those touchdown passes were to wide receiver Robert Woods, who started the game amid missing key practice time.  Woods finished the game with seven grabs for 53 yards.

His friend and fellow Serra alum, Marqise Lee, had a career game, carving up the Duck's secondary with eight catches for 187 yards and a touchdown.

USC led the game in the 3rd quarter 31-14 before the Ducks charged for a serious run.  The Ducks outscored USC 28-17 in the second half and holding the Trojans scoreless in the fourth quarter.

In the 4th, Oregon RB De'Anthony Thomas returned a kickoff for a touchdown, swinging momentum to the Ducks.  After a 3-and-out by USC, the Ducks scored again with a 2:17 drive, pulling within 11 points.  The Ducks would score again and convert a two-point conversion, rallying to 38-35 with just under five minutes to go.

Trojans rebounded with a drive of their own, but a fumble by RB Marc Tyler inside the 10-yard line recovered by Oregon put the Trojans gassed defense against the fast-tempo'd Ducks offense.

With under five seconds to go, Ducks kicker Alejandro Maldonado missed a 37-yard field goal sealing the Trojans a victory. This is the Trojans first win the state of Oregon since 2005.

USC will host rivals UCLA next week at the Coliseum as they will try to win 10 games for the season.

SB Nation Los Angeles USC Vs. Oregon Gamescore: USC Leads Oregon 21-7

The USC Trojans entered this game being 14.5 points under dogs, but they are leading the Oregon Ducks, where they are virtually unbeatable at home since head coach Chip Kelly took the helm, 21-7 at the half.

Quarterback Matt Barkley is leading the offensive charge, completing 15 of 19 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns. True freshman wide receiver Marqise Lee has caught seven of Barkley’s 15 passes for 195 yards, including a touchdown pass to open the game, 7-0.

Robert Woods, who has not practiced all week, started tonight’s game and has caught five passes for 38 yards including two touchdowns.

The Trojans have not broke into Oregon’s wall on the run as they have only accumulated 29 yards on 15 carries. Curtis McNeal has 25 yards on seven carries.

The Oregon Ducks have out gained the Trojans in yards 220 to USC’s 215, but have given up two turnovers.

In the last drive, the Ducks were poised to score, but LaMichael James fumbled inside the ten yard line, which was recovered by safety Jawanza Starling. James has 66 yards rushing on 16 carries, good for a 4.1 average.

Ducks quarterback Darron Thomas has completed 11 of 16 passes for 134 yards, including a touchdown to De’Anthony Thomas.
