Pro Football Weekly

The Chiefs have hired Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley as their new head coach Friday, the Kansas City Star reports. He is set to sign a four-year, $12 million contract.

Seems reasonable to me.

There’s little doubt that Haley is an offensive mastermind. His units with the Cardinals were some of the best in the league, and what he did for QB Kurt Warner’s career is nothing short of incredible. However, he has nowhere near the same quality of personnel in K.C., whose offense finished 24th last season.

We'll see how this talent looks after the offseason.

While it would be impossible to expect Haley to turn the Chiefs around overnight, the examples set by the 2008 Dolphins and Falcons put pressure on him to at least make K.C. competitive right away. He has the third overall pick in the draft and plenty of cap room, so the resources are there for a serious offseason overhaul.

It's a good day to be a Chiefs fan.

Ravens' failure to promote Ryan last year was telling

I read this on PFW in Audible section. Interesting thoughts. Here.

“(Ravens GM) Ozzie Newsome had a chance to elevate (Ravens defensive coordinator) Rex Ryan to head coach last year, and he didn’t do it. What does that tell you? Ozzie is one of the sharpest football guys I know. I don’t care what anyone in that organization says about Rex — I didn’t even have to ask the question. They answered it for me. (Like) Wade Phillips (and)Romeo Crennel, some guys are just meant to be lifelong coordinators.”

I'm not sure if this changes my opinion on whether we should be looking at Ryan, but it is cause for concern. Then again there were statements like this talking about how horrible Spagnuolo interviewed and now he's hired by the Rams who raved about how he blew away the front office in the interview. Should he still be on our HC list? I'd argue even a "lifelong coordinator" would be an upgrade on Herm.

In the NFL Replay of the 1994 matchup I'm watching on NFL network. Montana out duels Elway! I'm getting a little nostalgic here. Seeing the likes of Marcus Allen, Derek Thomas... looking to channel some good vibes for tomorrow. Sure was nice when we were good. Granted I was 11 years old when this game was played, I still remember this game when we finally got a win at mile high. Chiefs win! Chiefs win! *Sigh...

Billy Butler's future at 1B

I've been reading a lot of the discussion about our offseason needs and potential FA's this winter. I think one thing that hasn't been discussed as of late is Billy Butler's future at 1B. Have we officially given up on Butler being a legitimate 1B? In our limited sample size, it looks like he’s handled the duty pretty well. I know we've examined that his BA has actually been higher when he plays 1st than when he is DH. I have a hard time slapping the lifetime DH tag on someone as young as Butler - especially if he's viewed as a cornerstone of the franchise. How many legitimate MLB clubs have use the term "cornerstone DH"? I realize we may see him in that role, or a platoon role, if (when) Punch moves up possibly next year. Do we really believe he is nothing more than a lifetime DH or is this just stating the reality of how Hillman has predominately used him this year? i.e. if he can't beat out Gload, he must have no future at 1B.
