Prince out for spring; Hundley ready to go

27

Kevin Prince is still rehabilitating, and despite CRN's previous hopes will not be doing much of anything during spring ball. Recent surgeries have Darius Bell out and Nick Crissman limited. Brehaut's available, but just coming off baseball participation. Brett Hundley is there. While none of us wish any ill will on any Bruin, if there were ever a situation tailor-made for a freshman to come in and prove himself ready to contribute (or even start), this is it.

the President's picks (no, not Aboya!)

16

President Obama has made his selections. He picked Pitt over Florida to win our region, and all four #1 seeds to make the Final Four. On his bracket, KU beats Ohio State for the title. Sadly, around 0:55, you can (barely!) see that he picks Michigan State to beat UCLA. Feel free to discuss, agree with, or laugh at his picks - but please leave politics out of it. I value the community we have here on BN, and I don't care if your political views agree or radically disagree with mine. There are other places for that. I will stray from sports just enough to say that his appeal for assistance to the Japanese is something even the most partisan among us should support.

Reeves Nelson explains his tattoos

An interview with Reeves giving the story of each many of his tattoos - surprisingly good, as it was written by Splashke. Link goes to a Sacramento Bee feed so as not to give links directly to the fishwrap.

Stewart Mandel quotes BN editors

In an article titled "Neuheisel optimistic, but running out of time to resurrect UCLA," Mandel discusses crn's offseason moves and quotes an email from the BN editors, providing a link here as well.

"adjustments to the Pac-12 football officiating program"

8

Pac-whatever news release on Gold's blog states the former Vice President of Officiating for the NFL was a Pac consultant last season, and will now guide 'enhancements' to the football SPTR's (still works with Twelve!) as interim Coordinator of Football Officiating for the coming season. A quote from the commish: "Like in other high priority areas, we have taken a fresh look at our program, and will be implementing a series of changes that are forward-looking, innovative and take our program to the next level," Scott said. "The game and level of play is always improving, so it's essential that in the critical area of officiating, the program continue to evolve and improve as well."

"___of the Day" calendar featuring Coach

5

I found this at my local Borders today (I'm too cheap to buy calendars in December when I can get one for half price now). The box says it features "a different quote from or fact about the legendary coach on every page of this daily tribute to John Wooden." Perhaps too late for some of you, but you might be able to find it at your local Borders or other calendar source - their website doesn't offer it, but it may be available online elsewhere as well.

If you signed up for the monthly CSTV All-Access subscription to watch the 'Bruin TV' telecasts online, whether for pay or for free with the coupon code, here's the link to cancel. It's an automatically recurring payment until you act to cancel. The Montana State game on Dec. 21 is also Bruin TV-only, so you could pay until then and cancel...or just do the free streaming audio for that game.

SHOCKER! BSPN article speaks positively of UCLA

+

Ivan Maisel praises our kicking game. Scroll about 2/3 of the way down to get to his article. Money quote: "None of the above, however, applies to UCLA, where the kicking game is in midseason form -- for the NFL. If that's an exaggeration, it's not much of one."

Phil Knight's gift to the Ducks

2

Phil Knight donated $40+ million to build a building on the Oregon campus, spending more per square foot than LA's Disney Concert Hall or pretty much most buildings anywhere. That's OK, though, it's open to all students on their campus...as long as you're a student-athlete, that is. Everyone else can enjoy the landscaping. Complete with pictures.

biggest NCAA football stadiums - interesting comments about those in LA

6

Column on BSPN has this slam on us: There are no plans to expand the venue, thereby preventing the Rose Bowl from having the record for most empty seats at an NCAA football game (tens of thousands as far as the eye can see, UCLA home games). ...but well worth reading for their comments about the Mausoleum.

Earl Watson to the Heat?

5

Why not? As of the posting of this FanShot, the Heat technically only have one player under contract! "Miami has also begun looking at minimum-salary options for its backcourt, with a search that sources say has focused on Heat alumni Jason Williams, Mike James and Keyon Dooling along with Earl Watson."

interesting coaching contract details

+

The Hartford Courant investigated details of the contracts for 15 college basketball coaches, including John Calipari, Tubby Smith, Rick Pitino, Bill Self, CBH , Bob Huggins, and Tom Izzo. Just a few findings: For duration of his employment, Kansas' Self receives two automobiles which are "the highest line of the manufacturer or are mutually agreed upon, at no cost to Head Coach." (CBH gets 'at least two cars' per the article.) Kentucky's John Calipari is awarded $50,000 if the team's APR [Academic Progress Rate] is 950 or above. Also, if the previous year's graduation rate is 75 percent or above, Calipari is due $50,000. (Graduation? Kentucky?? HA HA HA!!!!!)
