Still learning the game of football, and all it's little complexities. I've become especially fascinated by defensive strategies, although I've got nothing against offensive play.

Need some help...
This is going to sound quite weird, but how do you guys watch games on TV? What I really mean is ... what do you guys look at, or look for, prior to the snap? I'm relatively new to the game, as you know, so I think I miss a lot of stuff that the more seasoned fans pick up.
When I first started watching, I'd basically look at down and distance... and then watch the play unfold. Now, I do do try and look at other things but I fear it's very basic indeed: QB under centre or in shotgun, and the wide receiver set. I don't know enough at this stage to really be able to assess the defense, unless it's an obvious nickle situation.
So, in the interests of taking my TV game watching to the next level, can you guys give me some pointers on what you look out for, and why? Would really appreciate it :)

Thomas or Monroe?
First off, this is my very first "fan post".... and I'm not even sure if this is the right place to post something like this. Apologies if I should have posted this elsewhere.
