The smartest article on the "Beckham Effect"

Too often we see Beckham being credited for 10 new stadiums, great attendance, or adding 7 solid new teams to MLS. He didn't negotiate any of those contracts to build stadiums, raise capital for steel, or look at the financial accounts of the new owners, but he did cause teams to develop an identity in the wake of the Beckham Rule AEG lobbied to create. Also, in fans' own minds they demanded results rather than just their team seeking to have a star, which bolstered the maturity of the fan base across MLS. Good read.

A sign of progress

The company that holds and distributes all the MLS broadcasts internationally reports another season of increased demand. Things continue to move forward for MLS.

Advice for Porter from other College to MLS coaches

Good article and great points made by Hyndman, Sigi and Arena. One point that stands out is the measure of success. The win-loss columns look different in MLS and at the professional level.

"The Two Escobars" is now streaming on Netflix

Trailer is behind the link, go to Netflix is you have a subscription. Watch a very complex history about the crossroads of drugs and the rise of Colombian soccer which reached its apex in 1994 at the World Cup. The documentary brilliantly weaves together the social, political and soccer aspects in Colombia from the 1980s until Andres Escobar, who had received offers from AC Milan prior to the World Cup and was Colombia's captain, was gunned down after scoring the own goal in USA's win over Colombia. Valencia's father is interviewed, along with the well known Pibe Valderamma [Ryan and I had a light switch cover of him growing up!]. Made me wonder about the effect this period of turmoil had on the current crop of Colombian players in MLS who would have been young children when this all took place. I certainly remember reading about the event in the newspaper in a diner in Astoria for breakfast as a young 12 year old. The murder made a big impression on me about how intertwined soccer passion is in other parts of the world. Well worth watching. It's not all soccer, but very illuminating.

What killed the NASL?

Roger Allaway, the unofficial guardian of US soccer history, pens a short piece on dispelling the myths of what caused the demise of the NASL. While evidence of its demise may not solely be in a dump in New Mexico, it is still worthwhile to know some of the events surrounding NASL's demise.

405k watch the PORvFCD match on NBCSN (2.5 hour time slot)

I know, BigSoccer post is the source, but I have not found a website/twitter source. Regardless, NBCSN nets new high on PORvFCD match (previously 392k for FCDvLAG, 7/21/2012), bests the subsequent ESPN2 broadcast with the more star-studded and playoff positioning SEAvLAG match (270k, 6:00pm PDT start). Olympic lead-in and promotion paying dividends.

888k watch POR v SEA on ESPN

To put this in context, this rating puts it above MLS Cup 2010 between glorious FC Dallas and famous Colorado Rapids. And is even higher than the average for all playoff matches on ESPN last year. It is also a very respectable 1/3 size of those who watched the England-Italy "pursefight". See this post on all the national broadcast ratings for this year.

NTR: MLS applies for ".soccer" domain name

Soccer United Marketing, the financial and marketing arm of MLS' board of directors [aka the Owners], has applied for the .soccer domain name. So instead of .com being the norm each team in the league could end with ".soccer". It could no longer be MajorLeagueSoccerSoccer.com, but MajorLeagueSoccerSoccer.Soccer in the future. For some details on the domain name application, here is a good article from WashPo. Credit: Evangel at BigSoccer.com.

Timbers Youth System Continues to Expand, This Time South

Rogue Valley SC is partnering with the Portland Timbers and will be changing their name to Rogue Valley Timbers. Southern Oregon is now connected to the Timbers Alliance program. Off the top of my head this means that the Timbers have a partnership with four youth clubs [Eastside Timbers, Vancouver United Timbers, Westside Timbers, Rogue Valley Timbers], regional ODP squads that will feed into U-16, U-18 teams through ODP. Culminating in playing in the USSF Development Academy league. Did I miss anything? Excited to see to the Timbers expand their statewide footprint and offer a clear path for any player to reach the professional level? When I played as a youth their clubs were always solid and tightly organized. Some of that may come from the fact they played together for years, but they were coached well.

USOC Round 3: Timbers v. Cal FC [USASA]

Cal FC upsets USL Pro team Wilmington Hammerheads, after dispatching the reigning PDL Champions Kitsap Pumas in Round 1 of the 2012 US Open Cup. The team showed up and bagged four goals against a shocked Wilmington side. Apparently fraternal chemistry helped out as Danny and Diego Barrera both earned a goal. The final score was 4-0. They beat Kitsap Pumas 3-1. Find more info on them here. Guess who's coming to Portland for the match? Eric Wynalda! He is the coach for the team. Here's hoping the Timbers can deliver the bad news to Wynalda like Harkes did with his wife.
