Who, what, when, where?
Through the first three weeks of the 2010 season there have been loads of great games and upsets. What happened in week three and how are all of the conferences and top teams shaping up thus far?
Conference outlooks and the Oklahoma Sooners after two weeks.
After two weeks of football I would have to rate myself as at least moderately satisfied. Most everything there is to be said about the complete and total ownathon that the Sooners handed the 'Noles last Saturday has already been said. I have seen it called the most dominating win of the season. But where do our beloved Sooners and the big 12 stack up nationally?
Hello, my name is Christian! How can I help you (break in your new DB's)?
In case you haven't heard the Florida State University Seminoles are coming to town Saturday. They bring with them one of the most highly touted Quarterbacks in the nation in Christian Ponder. Ponder has been mentioned in a few circles as an early front runner to win the Heisman. So what's all the hype about anyways?
WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA! Wait... What?
That pretty much sums up my thoughts about two-thirds of the way through the second quarter of saturday's game against Utah State. I count myself among those who figured that A) Oklahoma hangs half a hundred on the Aggies, and B) the Aggies wouldn't score more than 10ish. And, at 21-0 it looked about right. But... well we all know what happened. I proudly will wash my crow down with a glass of iced cold reality.
Also, no... Oklahoma does not usually struggle in the first game. At least not against teams like USU. And if you think we need new assistant coaches I'm guessing you weren't a fan in 2008 when Oklahoma had the most potent offense in modern college football, or in 2009 when Oklahoma ranked 8th in the nation in total defense. Because if you were a fan before, oh say yesterday, you would remember those kinds of (very, very recent) things. But hey, knee jerk reactions are common after a first week brain-cramp. Not calling anybody out in particular, but take a deep breath... and count to ten.
Whotah State?
This is the first game of the season for the Sooners and, well it should be a glorified practice. Utah State is the kind of team I'd prefer that Oklahoma not schedule. First year Head Coach Gary Andersen led the Aggies to a 4-8 record in 2009, their best campaign since the 2002 season when they went 4-7. Last years wins came against Southern Utah, Louisiana Tech, San Jose State, and Idaho. Realistically, this game is over as I type this.
My biased take on the Longhorns' offense and a worse case scenario (for the horns)
Every so often the stars align. Everything gels and everyone is firing on all cylinders. And every so often the opposite of that happens. You have to replace your four year starter at QB, you lose your best wide-out, you only return a couple full time starters on your offensive line, and you have no clear breakout tailback. This is that year for the Longhorns' offense. But didn't you know? They're gonna run the ball more this year. They'll be okay.
I personally think the Texas defense will be good enough to carry the rebuilding offense through most of their schedule. I mean its not like the Longhorns have a really tough schedule this year. Oklahoma State lost most of one of the most talented squads they've had since their current coach played QB in front of Barry Sanders. Tech should be rebuilding with a new coach. A&M is, well A&M. And Nebraska... I'm still not convinced that they will live up to the hype. They have to lose a little bit of their greatness on defense, and they're returning pretty much the same awful offense from last year. We also know that hardly anybody will be picking the Bruins to come into Austin and win against the Longhorns. Although the 'Horns will most likely finish the season with another ten wins, the peices are there for them to struggle and have some growing pains with as few as eight or nine wins.
Sam and Landry as redshirt freshman, or as I like to call it, apples and oranges
It's August 2007, and three names are on the lips of most Oklahoma football fans. Sam Bradford, Joey Halzle, and Keith Nichols. Rhett Bomar was at Sam Houston State and definately NOT coming back, Paul Thompson was off to the NFL... kinda, and in Norman we had us a QB battle. The last time we found ourselves in this predicament, well see Rhett Bomar and Paul Thompson circa 2005...
