Jets Forwards results at EV-tied
Robert Cleave combs through the Jets forwards data at EV-tied from last year. Best news is probably the performance of recently re-signed Andrew Ladd.
Alex Burmistrov Interview
Russian journolist Andrey Osadchenko sat down with Burmistrov recently and talked to him about his rookie season, playing in ATL and moving to Winnipeg.
Caps Looking to Dump Salary?
I wrote an article today talking about the Capitals need to re-sign Alzner and get under the cap ceiling. It's from a Flames perspective given Calgary's various needs. What would it take to acquire Semin or Alzner from WAS you think?
The Decline of Dany Heatley

Robert Cleave's Thrashers/Jets team overview
Flamesnation writer (and Winnipeg native) Robert Cleave combed through ATL's team tied numbers to see just what kind of team the 'peg is getting.
Brooksie reporting Rangers are pursuing Flames Tim Erixon
Calgary's former first rounder has to be signed by 5pm today or he re-enters the draft.
Trading for Picks? Buyer Beware
Former SBN writer (and current FN contributor) Robert Cleave wonders why Burke was eager to deal Versteeg for picks.
On Team Building and 4th Lines
I discuss the penchant for GMs and coaches to go with big and mean over skill on the 4th line in this post. The issue came up in the recent Conroy article here at M&G, so I figured I'd let everyone know.
Iginla analysis (Part 1)
My first post in a two parter looking at Jarome Iginla
Darryl Sutter Review
The season's not over, but I could wait no longer...my take on Sutter and whether he should be fired or not.
Kent Chats about the Flames on CBC
Hey folks. Just wanted to let everyone know I'll be appearing on CBC.ca to chat about the Flames on Tuesday, March 30 at 12:00 (MT). Feel free to drop by and lob maddening questions at me (like bob did the first time 'round).
Flames and Ducks Liveblog
Just wanted to let everyone know that Jean L and I will be liveblogging the action at Flames Nation this evening. Make sure to swing by and have a laugh (or cry).
the current deal is a terrible one for the city of Abbotsford because it's a bad bet; the city assumes all of the future risk while the team accrues a huge chunk of the benefits. If the Heat fail to attract fans and garner revenues, the city (meaning, the tax payers of Abbotsford, both hockey fans and non-hockey fans alike) are stuck with the bill.
I get political in my look at the the Flames taking advantage of pubic funds in Abbotsford.
Ryan Howse Continues His Hot Season
With 5 goals in his last 2 games, Howse now has 46 on the season, good for 3rd in the league behind Jordan Eberle and Kyle Beach - both of whom are older, former first round draft picks.
The Deeper Implications of the Boyd Trade
There's been some sniping around the Boyd trade both here and elsewhere and the argument being raised has conjured memories of another spat that erupted around somewhat similar circumstances almost three years ago. I think the comparison will help explain why I and others like Robert and RO don't like the deal.
In the summer of 2007, Darryl Sutter had 7 NHL defensemen signed:
In Defense of Daymond Langkow
This one's for you, RO.
Flames Schedule Analysis
I take a look at Calgary's stretch drive. "Not going to be easy" might be an understatement.
The Staios deal is a mess. Whatever "intangibles" he adds to the roster are likely to fall well short of his relatively expensive contract. Unless he regains the sort of on-ice form he showed years ago, Staios is a bad bet to provide value for his contract and is a toxic asset - one which was happily expunged by the rather hapless organization up north.
It's a move that smacks of a man either lost in the past or completely out of ideas.
My look at the Steve Staois acquisition.
Calgary Flames sign Rene Bourque to multi-year deal.
Jeff Marek Tweets that the Flames have signed Bourque. Details as they come in...
Dallas puts netminder Alex Auld on waivers.
According to Big Bad Bob. That would solve Calgary's back-up problem, hey folks?
Dustin Boyd's Falling Stock
Today I look at Dustin Boyd's failing position in the Flames org.
Wahl picked up eight points, scoring two goals and six assists to go with a +4 rating, in four games over the past week, helping the Chiefs post a 4-0 record in that span.
Mitch Wahl has been on fire in the latter half of the season. He's currently 6th in WHL scoring. Look for him in my Flames Top 20 Prospects article for Hockey's Future, to be published this week.
In depth look at Chris Higgins
over at FN, I take a look at Chris Higgins and why he might turn out to be a very good acquisition.
Backlund was a beast! In his first game back since being reassigned to Abbotsford for the Olympics, the Vesteras, Sweden product pumped in his 11th and 12th goals of the season, racked up eight shots on goal and finished with a +2
The Heat report that Backlund is playing well during his return to the minors
My Jokinen Eulogy
I was tough on Jokinen all year, but the truth is he was kind of put into a position to fail. In this article I trace the reasons Jokinen's time as a Flame was a bit of a disaster.
Changes
Well folks, some things are changing around these parts. First and foremost, I'll be stepping down as the managing editor of M&G in order to take the same position for Flames Nation. This wasn't a decision I made lightly given the work I've put into getting this community going, but the opportunity wasn't one I could pass up. Of course, I'll continue to chime in here now and then and will be the acting manager while the network looks for someone to fill my shoes. However, the bulk of my work will now appear over at FN, where I hope many of you will stop by to once again tell me how wrong I am. In addition, Robert and others will still be filling the virtual pages 'round these parts in my absence.
My experiences with SBN and with the community here have been overwhelmingly positive. I'm sometimes surprised with the degree to which the conversation and interaction has grown since I went live a year ago. Part of it was the great platform and back-end provided by the SBN overlords, part of it was the great contributions I got from guys like Robert and RO and perhaps the most important factor was the efforts of all the readers and commenters. Thank you all for coming by and making this site at once fun and interesting. It's been a pleasure.
This, of course, isn't a final good-bye. I will be as active as ever for Flames Nation and will endeavor to craft a full and vibrant community there as well. Again, I hope you all choose to drop by now and then.
Cheers,
Kent
Flames Shot differential before and after the recent trades
I have a thorough look at the Flames recent and past out-shooting efforts over at Flames Nation. Be warned, graphs are involved.

Pre-Break Victory Post-Game - Causes for Optimism
A lot was riding on the game last night - primarily a play-off spot. With the win, the Flames retained the 8th spot over Detroit and Anaheim.
Flames Versus Ducks Gamethread - Return of the Mo(n)sster?
The Flames played the Ducks to about even the last time the two teams clashed, but were out-done in by Perry-Getzlaf-McElhinney. Tonight, two of those elements will be absent, so Calgary's chances should be improved. Anaheim added some marginal depth in Jason Blake recently, but there's little chance he'll make up for the lack Ryan Getzlaf.
Other stuff to watch for:
- With Dawes and Moss back in the line-up, the Flames should be 4 lines strong. The Ducks, on the other hand, are one of the top heaviest teams in the Western Conference, which is why they are still battling for a play-off spot despite some very nice guns and a good season from Jonas Hiller. If the big boys can play Perry to at least even this time, the depth guys should have a good chance to do some damage.
- Speaking off Moss, his year has been fairly disappointing after his break-out season. My suspect the big guy was playing hurt for a majority of the time previously. Hopefully he's back to form after the long lay-off.
- I've been fairly critical of Iginla, even post-trade shake-up, but the captain has seen his shot rate increase since the likes of Stajan and Hagman were added. Since Dion left town, Iggy has averaged 4.3 shots/game - a sizable increase and one much more in line with his peak years. I still think he's playing on the periphery too much and relying on "stop - look - pass" plays too often, but at least he's getting more rubber on net.
- This is Calgary's last game before the trade deadline. It's unclear whether Sutter plans to declutter the forward ranks with a quantity for quality deal, but it's entirely possible a couple more guys are playing their last games as Flames. Especially if the team loses and falls out of the play-off picture.
