Habs Sign Diaz For Two More Years

16

Marc Bergevin continues to piece together the 2012-13 edition of the Montreal Canadiens. Friday afternoon the team announced the signing of defenseman Raphael Diaz to a two year deal. Financial terms of the deal were naturally undisclosed by the team, but Renaud Lavoie of RDS tweeted it at $2.45 million over the two years. It's a 33% raise over the $900K he made last year with the Canadiens. This puts the Habs with seven roster defensemen under contract. P.K. Subban is the remaining RFA on the Canadiens roster. Habs fans shouldn't be in panic mode over P.K. not signing yet. Remember, Carey Price didn't sign his first RFA deal until September 2, 2010.

Habs Say No To Jagr

CJAD's Rick Mofffat reports that the Montreal Canadiens are not pursuing future Hall of Famer Jaromir Jagr. The report states that Jagr's agent, Petr Svoboda, was notified of this Monday morning by Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin.

"When Price's deal gets done with the Canadiens, I would expect that the term will be a lot less, in the neighbourhood of 6-7 years, but the cap hit will likely be more than Quick's, maybe $6 to $6.5 million per year. " - Bob McKenzie

Following the 10-year extension for Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick, the topic of Carey Price's next contract was discussed on TSN's Insider Trading segment on Thursday. Per Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette, Price is hoping to get a deal done in the next two weeks. The Canadiens filed for arbitration last week, in a strategic move to prevent other teams from filing an offer sheet. Stubbs also reports that negotiations on a deal for P.K. Subban are also expected to start shortly. Meanwhile a decision is expected to be made by coveted collegiate defenseman Justin Schultz sometime this afternoon. The Oilers and Senators are reported to be the front-runners in a group of six teams.

Audette Interviewing for Habs Coaching Staff

2

Reports have it that former Canadiens player Donald Audette will be interviewed for an assistant coaching position with the Habs. Audette's coaching resume, as far as I have found is as follows Collège Esther-Blondin GM since 2010 Coached 2 teams this year Quebec U-16 and Quebec U-17 Heavily Involved in minor hockey since his retirement as a player. There's also still speculation that Martine Lapointe and Patrice Brisebois will join the organization. Lapointe is pegged to be another assistant coach, or possibly Director of Player Development, while Brisebois will take an undetermined front office position. Earlier in the week, it was confirmed that Gerrard Gallant did have an interview with the Canadiens.

"In regards to my ankle it sure got a bad break it is cracked three places around the ankle. The main bone is broken above the ankle and the small bone is broken in the side of the leg. It looks like curtains for me as far as hockey is concerned. I look back and say that I was fortunate at that. It’s a wonder I never broke my neck. Thank God I have that at least." -Howie Morenz

A rare letter from Habs legend Howie Morenz, just shortly before his death, is now on the block through Classic Auctions. The letter comes from the estate of Morenz's former teammate Mary Burke. The letter is one of hundreds of items up for bid, and we'll feature some of these over the coming days. Another unique Morenz item is his 1923-24 rookie card graded a 6 by PSA. There is no other higher graded rookie card of the Stratford Streak.
