Vanderbilt Commodores Football Recruiting Is On The Upswing
It's difficult to accurately measure the impact James Franklin has had on Vanderbilt's athletics programs. This mostly has to do with the fact that it is an incalculable number (I would know, I majored in the maths). Whether it is "simply" changing the mental state of the entire football program or getting the Board of Trust to buy in to the fact that ponying up a boatload of money would not only benefit the football team, but the entire Vanderbilt community (from students to faculty to staff), James Franklin's impact at Vanderbilt has been sizable and diverse.
The least surprising area of improvement under Coach Franklin? Football recruiting. Improvement was immediate in 2011, just months after his hiring. The 2012 haul was even better. High profile recruits have shown a willingness to listen to Coach Franklin's offer and commit early. Experts and opposing fans alike never thought they'd stand by their word all the way through signing day. They were wrong.
James Franklin is doing the unthinkable. In what was once (and maybe still is) considered the hardest job in all of college football, he's thriving. He flipped the script; the "hinderances" that everyone listed when trying to portray the inherent difficulty in the job? Yeah, those are now strengths. Those high profile recruits that stood true to their word on signing day this past February? They're attracting other, higher profile recruits. It is a snowball effect.
Example? Leon McQuay III. Put simply, if LQ3 were to commit to the Commodores, he would most likely be the most highly rated commit in school history.
James Franklin, y'all.

"Vanderbilt. It was so close. They were recruiting me for the longest and I honestly had the best feel for that school. But in the end I just had to go with my gut feeling. But it was close."

NBA Draft 2012: Vanderbilt's John Jenkins Forgoes Eligibility, Turns Pro
Vanderbilt Commodore sharpshooter John Jenkins today announced his decision to forego his senior year and to enter the 2012 NBA Draft.
"This was a very difficult decision for my family and I to make, but I am ready to dedicate myself fully to achieving my dream of playing in the NBA," said Jenkins. "The last three years have been the time of my life, and I will always cherish my time at Vanderbilt and the relationships I have made along the way."
Head coach Kevin Stallings said: "I'm very happy for John as he has chosen this opportunity to pursue his professional career. This is something that he wants to do and has his family's blessing. My role has been to accumulate information on where he might be drafted. I have given that information to John and his parents, and this is the decision they have made."
Jenkins leaves the Commodores 10th all time in scoring. He became the first player since 1996 to lead the SEC in scoring in consecutive seasons.
"I also would like to thank Commodore fans. It has been a blessing to play at Memorial Gym for the last three years and those experiences will be ones that I will always remember. The fans that fill Memorial Gym every night really help make Vanderbilt a special place, and leaving them is the hardest part about this decision."
Tim Fugger, DE-OLB, Vanderbilt -- Fugger ranked in the top 10 in the SEC last year in sacks (8) and tackles for loss (13.5). He complimented his natural pass-rushing skills by turning in a complete pro day workout. He was fast (a 4.56 40), strong (29 reps on the bench) and explosive (34-inch vertical jump). He then looked terrific after being put through a battery of linebacker and defensive end drills. Fugger has positioned himself to be selected somewhere in the middle of the draft's final day.
On matching up with – or at least containing – Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, getting him to foul out with only 16 minutes of play and four shot attempts (five points) in the SEC final. Kidd-Gilchrist also fouled out and scored eight points in UK’s 83-74 win on Feb. 25 win in Lexington. He was held to four points on 1-of-4 shooting with three fouls in UK’s 69-63 win on Feb. 11 in Nashville …
"Well, Jeff Taylor is pretty dang good. He was having to work on both ends because Jeff Taylor is a great player, too. Jeff is probably one of the few guys in college basketball that can athletically match up with that kid. (Gilchrist) is an unbelievable athlete, an unbelievable player and an unbelievable competitor. But Jeff Taylor is one of the few guys that can physically and athletically match up with him and not be inferior. And so that was probably why we had a little bit more success at that position than maybe some other people did."
Kevin Stallings addresses changes at Vanderbilt | The Tennessean | tennessean.com
"Backup point guard Kyle Fuller met with Stallings one day after the NCAA Tournament loss to Wisconsin and decided he will return for his junior year. Fuller had considered transferring after his playing time fell off this season."
Fantastic news. It's about time the whole Kyle Fuller transfer speculation be put to rest. We won't be losing our spiritual leader.
"My favorite college moment was my junior year," said Price. "We had a walk-on named Jason Cunningham. He walked-on my sophomore year. He would throw in inter-squad games and was out there eating up innings giving guys more looks and more at-bats in those type games. He didn't quit. He was not an SEC pitcher by any means. He is no longer playing baseball. Probably no scouts even talked to him.
"Jason was a guy that never gave up and got a chance to pitch in the SEC Tournament game against Mississippi State. He threw three innings for us. It was one of the first games he pitched with so much meaning. Jason went out and threw three zero's. I watched him come off that field and knew how much work he had put in. He never envisioned himself to be in that situation. That was probably my favorite moment in college."

Transfer List: First Edition - CBSSports
Assuming Vanderbilt would be interested in bringing in any transfers (particularly any that might be available to play immediately), what names from this list would you want the Commodores to pursue/land?

So...was the 2011 Vanderbilt team statistically better than any other Commodore team in recent memory?
Yes, in fact, it was.
Ladies and Gentleman, the James Franklin effect. This is only going to improve with time as recruiting begins to catch up to the rest of the SEC pack.

"Wisconsin: I don't really respect the way they play. Jordan Taylor likes to run and grab you, and then throw his head back and try to get a call. If you set a pick, they take a dive. They cheat the game. Everybody raves about this defensive juggernaut, but that's bull. They dribble the clock out and mug you out of the building. Part of the reason they lost to Cornell and Davidson is because when you get into the tournament, refs outside the Big Ten don't fall for that. Taylor is kind of struggling, but they're always going to be in the game because they're not going to shoot until there are six seconds left on the shot clock. Then they give it to Taylor. That's their offense. They don't even run the swing as much as they used to. Taylor plays no defense because he's trying to save his energy. Jared Berggren, Josh Gasser and Mike Bruesewitz have all had fabulous seasons, and Ryan Evans has really taken his game to the next level. They're going to be in every game because of the way they play and the fact that they have a lot of weapons."
Looks like the officials didn't read the scouting report. Though, in fairness, I'm not sure Vandy did either. So many offensive fouls called.
