Friday Ramblings - Meetings, Playoffs, and Polls Oh My!
Good Friday morning to you all and War Eagle!
This week we dive head first into the meetings of the South Eastern Conference at the Sandestin Hilton, along the Florida coast. The Auburn guest speaker was new women's basketball coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. You can watch her speech HERE.
The biggest topics discussed during the meetings were the changes that will be made to the sports schedules going forward. Basketball, baseball, and football are the big three in attendance numbers, but all of the sports are going to be affected in some form or another.
For your convenience, here is a LINK to the SEC football schedule.
The second biggest question asked, at least to football fans, were the opinions of the SEC football coaches on the seemingly inevitable playoff system that is coming to college football. By a wide majority, none of the coaches wants to limit the playoff to conference champions only.
My guess is the nationwide SEC envy, coupled with the popularity contest that make up the college poll system, are enough to sway our coaches to say these things.
Said Auburn coach Gene Chizik: "If the objective is to have a system where the best four teams in the country play, then it needs to be the best four teams in the country. Conference championships and things of that nature should not play a part."
"It's just like politics and self-interest," Saban said. "Somebody wants to create a circumstance that's going to help their particular situation or conference and it's not what's in the best interests of college football."
That's just two of the quotes. Georgia coach Mark Richt has gone on record as being against a Conference champion only playoff system as well.
Whatever playoff system is finally adopted by the NCAA, it's member conferences, and Notre Dame( I hate giving them any cred) will be sure to be fraught with controversy, and not make a large number of people happy. Any system that would diminish what the SEC has done since 2004, would be a travesty, and in this writers mind weaken college football to the sad old ways of the Bowl system.
Those days were full of dishonest homerism of the polls. Like it or not, the old poll system was as corrupt, and disingenuous as our politicians. Until the multiple ESPN networks, nobody could see more than three college football games a week. How could anyone possibly rank 20 teams with that as their basis of college football? You already know that answer, don't you?
The future is uncertain, and there are a ton of hurdles yet to be crossed, but there are changes coming to college football. I have long stipulated that the more that human technology changes, the faster it changes. So it goes with college football.
I wanted you have to have an easy access to a very impressive media guide. So I have provided a link HERE. Tell me what you think in the comments section.
Until next time...

Friday Rambling: Back In The Saddle
Hello friends, and War Eagle!
I am happy to announce that we are almost 100% back in the flow, as we gear up for....wait for it....the summer doldrums. Who are we kidding, there are more items to talk about this week, than we can shake a stick at, so let's get to it.
Big Cat IV....
This weekend Auburn will host it's annual Big Cat event where a select few prospects are invited. It's a non-football weekend according to Coach Curtis Luper.
The productivity comes from the uniqueness of it of the event," Luper said. "Not anyone else in the country gets these many unofficial visits when it's not attached to a spring game or Junior Day or a camp. The reason it is popular is because kids know it's not going to be any football whatsoever, not unless it's someone here for the first time, and only then those guys will get a small introduction to Auburn football.
"Some can come as far away as Chicago, D.C. or Texas comfortably and not be in a pinch time-wise," Luper said. And when they go home, the work really begins."It's not about this weekend. It's about the experience and the bond. We'll build on that. Big Cat will be a factor," Luper said.
Numbers Game....
I have been wondering just how many actual scholarship players Auburn has, and Jay G. Tate has done an excellent job in figuring this out for us.
His numbers have Auburn at 66 players currently on the roster, with the 2012 class to be added to this number when the official roster is announced sometime in August.
HOW DOES THAT ADD UP? : Based on the educated guesses above, Auburn has 66 players on scholarship at this time. I expect another 17 signees to enroll at various points this summer, which bumps Auburn’s scholarship population to 83*. Maximum is 85.
My Take....
Coach Chizik has done an excellent job of recruiting, and has placed Auburn at an overall high as far as talent goes. There are questions for sure, mostly from us the fans, and the media, because Chizik plays his cards tightly to the vest. There has not been a decision yet by Chizik that we have had to second guess.
When Auburn steps on the field this upcoming season, they will have arguably the most talent top to bottom of any Auburn team in it's storied history.

Friday Ramblings: Home Edition
Hello once again sports fans, and War Eagle!
This week we have a few things to discuss, and a personal message to all of you. First, my message to you. Next week and possibly the following week as well, I am in a home restructure/remodel mode, and therefore will leave you in the very capable hands of my fellow bloggers here at Track Em. We are having all new flooring put down in our house, and nearly half of the interior of our house is being repainted. You can just imagine all the packing and such, it's almost like moving, minus the big trucks. Now onto the topics this week.
Legends and lessons....
With the passing of Junior Seau,a certain NFL Hall of Fame recipient, many questions are being raised about the violence of the sport we all love. No matter what the outcome of the autopsy, many have already speculated that concussion and the effects that go along with it, are the cause of the apparent suicide of Mr. Seau.
Seau's death is another in an increasingly long list of NFL players, that is bringing the white hot spotlight onto a subject that quite frankly, we don't know very much about. How many other football players have been affected? Unfortunately we may never know if this was the root of their troubles.
If indeed there are scientific links to football activities, and these suicidal behaviors, there will be far reaching changes to our game throughout all levels. From youth leagues up through the NFL. All will be affected in one way or another, as they should!
Recruiting tidbits....
Auburn has set it's sights on a select group of offensive linemen in this next class. After the last two monster "O" line classes, Auburn can afford to be a little more selective. The quantity of this last class was matched by the quality, so I have complete confidence in our coaches being able to sign a select few each year.
24/7Sports has posted a top 25 list of players. There could be a lot of discussion about why this athlete or that one is rated the best. That is something I'll leave to those who get to watch most of these kids play.
Other tidbits....
I always peruse the net for anything Auburn, and this week I found a gem. Over at the War Eagle Reader, I read that Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank apparently has a race horse named Tiger Walk.
THIS, is the story of a dumb jock proving that he is just that. In the new KoolBell's dictionary, his picture is accompanied by the definition of idiot.
This, yes, this right here, this is the way athletes are supposed to act. Thanks guys.
Friday Ramblings
Gene Chizik speaks to the media....
Did I mention that I really like Tim Brando? No? Let me explain my sudden enthusiasm. This past week Tim Brando interviewed our very own Gene Chizik, and the conversation is well worth your listening to. There are some surprise subjects in the conversation, which I won't give away. Here is the LINK
Thanks to DKinAU for the story, Here is the audio of Coach Chizik during the SEC teleconference.
Coach Loeffler speaks....
Prior to speaking to the Columbus Phenix City Auburn Club, Offensive Coordinator Scot Loeffler answered some questions from Joel Erickson of War Eagle Extra. Here is the entire interview. My favorite question I captioned below for you.
JAE: Does an offense have to be multiple to keep a defense from zeroing in on you?
Loeffler: "I tell you, whenever you look at defenses today, particularly across this conference, they’re as good as they come. To pigeonhole yourself in one area, or style of play, it’s really hard to move the ball. I think the evolution, and the way things are going, is people are trying to be as diverse as they possibly can. And at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter, it’s how you run it, and how people defend it. If you can run the ball and not turn it over and play great defense, you always have a chance to win."
New Weight Room is ready....
I read on the AUFamily blog where the new athletic weight room has fully opened, and is now ready to use. Click on the LINK to see actual pictures.
Recruiting Notes...
One of the country's top Defensive linemen has stated many times that he does not have a preference and that he will not commit until signing day. One place however that he guarantees he will revisit, is Auburn. Let's hope that is a good sign.
Auburn has offered a scholarship this week to a true freshman in high school. The Florida running back must be one heckuva prospect to be getting that kind of offer. That would be a class of 2015 recruit. Mind boggling.
more juicy tidbits after the jump...
Friday Ramblings
We took a little break last week from our Friday Ramblings post and did a special tribute to Auburn's Heisman Award winners, which was well received. Clearly we threw you guys for a loop, and I'll make sure to get back on track this week.
There have been many post A-Day articles and posts written, Our Acid Reign does the best job of any of them. He is definitely on par with the likes of Phillip Marshall of 24/7Sports, and Joel Erickson of Columbus Ledger/Enquirer fame. Nobody sees the details like Acid does, and even fewer can relay those details in a way that I can understand. We are very fortunate to have such a fine gentleman writing for us here at Track Em Tigers.
Auburn Softball....
Coach Tina Deese is as aggressive at recruiting as Gene Chizik. This past week a standout shortstop and pitcher committed to play for Deese at Auburn.
"I really liked the engineering program there and coach Deese is a nice lady," Cooper said on Dothan’s trip home from winning the two games at Russell County. "They have got a great softball program and I love the way she interacts with the players. I also love the (rest of the) coaching staff."
The article goes on to state...
Last year, as a pitcher, Cooper had a 29-6 record with a 0.95 earned run average and 180 strikeouts in 185 innings. As a hitter, she batted .527, earning 106 hits, which tied the Alabama High School Athletic Association state record for most hits in a season.
Looks like the program is still reaching skyward. Fight on Ladies, and WAR EAGLE!
Staying with recruiting....
There are several items this week, that for one reason or another we decided to wait until today to talk about. I hope you don't mind.
Last Saturday prior to A-Day Auburn received two commitments from linebackers. If you follow any of my recruiting editorials, then you know that I consider this an area of great concern for Auburn, especially headed into next season. The additions of Cameron Toney, and Jarrad Davis are in line with what Coach Chizik and his staff have been doing thus far this spring. That brings the total number of linebackers to three that gave verbals to Auburn thus far.
Defense wins championships, and Auburn has obtained the verbal commitments from arguably one of the best defensive classes it has ever had this early in the process. So far, I like what I see. Which leads me to the big item to discuss.
Dee Liner took a visit to Tuscaloosa, to take in the Alabama spring game last Saturday. Why is that so important? Mr. Liner is a solid verbal to Auburn, and missing the AU A-Day game would seem to be reason for concern. He put all those worries to rest with his statement after returning home from West Vance.
"I want you to tell all the Auburn fans that I love them and there wasn't nothing serious about the trip to Tuscaloosa this weekend and I'm 100 percent with Auburn, no matter what,"
We know that these kids can often have a change of heart during their senior high school seasons, although Dee Liner seems pretty solid in his commitment to Auburn.
Tribute To Auburn's Heisman Winners

Hello once again everybody and War Eagle!
In every generation there are heroes, and so it is with college football. Auburn fans from three consecutive generations have had the distinct pleasure seeing a true college football great, bless it's football battlefield. Each one of those former players went on to reach the pinnacle of collegiate football. Saturday morning before the A-Day game begins, Auburn University will give homage to three of it's most famous gridiron gladiators.Chronologically they are Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson, and Cam Newton.
Pat Sullivan....
Jay.... I was introduced to Auburn football through Pat Sullivan. I was very young during his playing days, but I vividly remember my father explaining just how special he was on the field. Back in those days, you were lucky if you got a game a year on television, so most of my Saturday's were spent around the radio with Dad and my grandfather. It's funny what you remember after all these years, but my recollections of Sullivan were of me imagining how he looked on the field and what it was like to see Terry Beasley catch his passes. I can only imagine.
Acid Reign.... When I first heard of Pat Sullivan, I was nine years old. Football wasn't a spectator sport at that age, rather it was the stuff that blared out of portable radios while you did yard work. However, just before Disney on Sunday night, you could watch the Shug Jordan and Bear Bryant shows back to back on TV. I watched impatiently at first, but this Sullivan guy could really zing the ball! And he didn't go down when he was hit like most quarterbacks! I shudder to think how ridiculous Sullivan's numbers would have been if Gus Malzhan was running the hurry-up back in Sullivan's day! When we'd choose up sides in the neighborhood to play touch football, we'd also pick which real player we were. I'd always fight to be Pat Sullivan. Even the Bama kids wanted to be Pat Sullivan!
AubTigerman.... Watching Pat Sullivan was inspirational. What most people remember is the passing records and the cry "Sullivan to Beasley." What I remember is the consummate field general that never seemed to be shaken, even when he was completing a pass with defensive linemen hanging all over him.
There were so many great plays on the field between Sullivan and his receivers. He was simply the best at what he did. I will forever remember Vince Dooley calling him superman and Bear Bryant saying that, "Sullivan does more things to beat you than any quarterback I've ever seen." My fondest memory (next to beating Bama two years in a row) was when he out dueled Archie Manning in the 1970 Gator Bowl 35-28.
He always seem to me to embody the competitiveness and gentleman persona of his Coach, Shug Jordan and I think he still exemplifies what it means today to be an Auburn Man.
KoolBell - I was a young fair haired 8th grade kid playing football as a wide receiver on our Junior Varsity football team at Wetumpka High School when Pat Sullivan won his Heisman. I was most assuredly an Auburn fan, at a time when Auburn football on television consisted of the post game show with Phil Snow from WSFA-12. There are precious few highlights of Pat in his glory days at Auburn. In one of the few videos available, here is a clip of Pat in action against the Georgia Bulldogs in 1969.
As you can see, even before being awarded the Heisman, Sully was a very talented athlete, who could run, throw and had excellent vision. An escape artist extraordinaire, those capabilities were not to be seen again on the field at Auburn, until the arrival of Cam Newton.
Bo Jackson....
Jay.... There has never been anyone like Bo. He is without question, the most phenomenal athlete since Jim Thorpe. Nearly 30 years later, I still shake my head in disbelief over what he did on the field. The part about Bo that is lost on younger people, is what he did off the field. He shutdown and shut-up an Alabama program that was at an all-time high. He not only made Auburn relevant again, he set the stage for the program to dominate the state for the next quarter century. He made it cool to come to Auburn. And that continues today.
WEA... I admit I wasn't much of a college football fan during my high school days growing up in Columbus, Georgia. And on the day I moved into my apartment at CDV Extention in September, 1985, I noticed people had painted "Go, Bo, Go" on their car and bedroom windows. I thought to myself, "Who's Bo?" My introduction to college football couldn't have been more exciting. I sat in Jordan-Hare for virtually every home game witnessing his exploits, and saw him on the road against Tech and Georgia single-handily dismantle their defenses. I was probably spoiled to have started my Auburn fan hood like that. My only regret is I only got one year of him.
Acid Reign.... It was still the relative TV dark ages when Bo played at Auburn, but a chunk of the college football world had broken away, thumbed their noses at the NCAA, and started selling television rights all over the place. Still, you were lucky to get 3 or 4 regular season Auburn games televised. I managed to attend most of the home games in 1983, and it was pretty special. While Bo was the star, that was a total team backfield also featuring Tommy Agee and Lionel James. To me, it was the best utilization of Bo's talent.
I thought the 1985 offense was built for him to win the Heisman, but not necessarily for the team to win the league. It was great to see Bo win a very deserving trophy, but changes were afoot and the Auburn natives were restless at that point.
AubTigerman.... Bo Jackson still remains the greatest athlete to ever play in Jordan-Hare Stadium. Sports Illustrated named Bo the third greatest collegiate athlete in history behind Jackie Robinson (2) and Jim Brown(1). I can't say I agree with any name being ranked above Bo, much less two names. And until Clark Kent enrolls at Auburn, Bo Jackson will probably remain the greatest athlete to ever wear orange and blue and quite possibly the greatest athlete to ever play college sports.
I remember his speed and power but one play really stands out in my memory and it wasn't a running play. In his freshman year, Auburn was trailing (at that time) traditional rival Tennessee 17-14. Bo picked up a 1st down on (I think) 4th and 3 and then caught a leaping 45 yard pass from halfback Lionel 'Little Train' James to keep a drive going late in the game that would put the Tigers ahead of the Vols 21-17. Tennessee had soundly beaten Auburn the year before and their fans threw oranges at the Tigers when they left the field. After Auburn's big upset, some Auburn fans returned the favor.
KoolBell - To complete this segment, I feel compelled to explain as best I can, just what Bo meant to Auburn. At a time when Auburn was being dominated by our cross state brethren, Auburn fans were becoming desperate to find a way to beat Alabama. Many fans had lost hope. Pat Dye knew this, and he told Bo as much. In a last ditch effort to bring Bo to Auburn Pat told Bo he would be the player that could restore hope to Auburn fans, and that Jackson could take Auburn to the mountain top, by beating Alabama. Boy, did Bo Jackson deliver.
In those days, Auburn was being owned by Alabama. The record number of consecutive loses to our toughest rival would be forged. That number would reach 9 in a row. Then, along came Bo.
Jackson was different, in so many ways. He was quiet, and respectful. When he put that helmet on, and ran out onto that field however, he was pure magic.
Bo Jackson struck a friendship with Pat Dye that continues to this day.
Cam Newton....
Ah yes, that effervescent smile, that charming glow, and that continual "swagger". Call it what you like, but Cam Newton has all of that, and more.
Jay.... No person has ever dominated the game of football like Cam did in 2010. His 14 games will remain the most magical in Auburn history. He has changed the quarterback position forever. The boost he's provided Auburn is similar to what Bo did years back. Just when Alabama was set to make another huge run, Auburn answered. They always have responded. Cam taking Auburn to the national championship is the unlikeliest event of my lifetime. Truthfully, I never believed I'd see it. For that reason alone, Cam will always be my favorite.
WEA....I'll use the words that so many of our stupefied opponents always used describing Newton and his exploits: He was a freak. After the South Carolina game I was touting him for Heisman. I simply had never seen anything like him before. With passing and his ability to run, there's no doubt in my mind he's the greatest athlete to ever suit up at Auburn. I know he only had one year to basically Bo's three, but he will be the benchmark for college quarterbacks for quite some time. With one and done at Auburn, his legend will only grow over the years.
Acid Reign.... I'll have to confess about my early sentiments about Cam Newton. After the 2010 A-Day, I figured he was just another happy-feet "athletic" guy who took snaps. Occasionally makes big plays, but if you want to crank out first downs consistently, you need the little stick-figure, caretaker quarterback in there most of the time. Every week, I said to myself, "see, that's a rookie throw." After seeing the South Carolina game in person, I was finding it really difficult to find Cam's mistakes, and his big plays were exploding. Even in his early Auburn days, he didn't turn the ball over much, and the team kept winning.
I guess where I came around was the Arkansas game, where an SEC title contender just flat couldn't stop him, either through the air or on the ground. I still figured LSU would slow him down, but after he ran over even a Jon Chavis D for 200 rushing yards, I was on the bandwagon! Funny how that goes.
A month later, when Cam was having a rough first half Iron Bowl, it was shocking. We had become accustomed to the spectacular out of him! We found out about Cam's character that day. There was no pouting. No acting out. No yelling at teammates. Cam went to work with his coaches and found a way to get back in that game. For the payoff, I had the privilege of sitting in the Georgia Dome and watching Cam sail pass after big-league pass as the Tigers ran away to the SEC Title, and on to the BCS and a Heisman Trophy!
AubTigerman.... Having been blessed to watch parts of seven decades of Auburn football, I have to say Cam Newton is the best quarterback I’ve ever seen play the game. He had a presence whenever he walked out on the field that was noticeable even in warm ups. Great players are suppose to elevate the play of those around them, Cam did that; but he also elevated the entire stadium like no one I’ve ever seen. Quite simply, he was a star.
I am grateful I got to see him play live in nine of his 14 games at Auburn. I witnessed many spectacular plays but my greatest memory will always be, watching him from three rows from the end zone in Phoenix Stadium, as he (though obviously playing hurt) led the Tigers to their second National Championship. After watching Auburn come so close several times, it was a moment that I had wondered if I would ever see in my lifetime. Thanks in part to Cam, I can now die a happy man.
KoolBell....With all the tools necessary to perform his craft, Newton was fortunate enough to be in Auburn at the same time as Gene Chizik. For reasons that have nothing to do with talent, Chizik guided Newton through some of the most tumultuous times any college football player could endure. All the while Cam continued to amaze the college football world with his ability to scramble, his passing touch, his amazingly graceful runs, and undeniable quest to win.
Cam accomplished one thing that the other two football greats were not able to achieve, win a National Championship.
As thousands of Auburn fans gather this Saturday to pay tribute to these great athletes, we can't help but wonder who the next Auburn great will be. Who will wear the Orange and Navy while leading our beloved Tigers to greatness. Is he already on campus?

Friday Ramblings Kicks Off Your Weekend
Get ready now, for it's only 146 days until the first kick off of the new college football season. Speaking of kickoff, I noticed Auburn has one of the top Kickers in the country rating AU as his favorite. We already have a solid verbal from the #1 rated punter in the land, so it's fine with me if we keep up the stellar play in that area. Seems coach Jay Boulware is serious about special teams forces.
Women in sports Part 1....
LSU wasn't the only school to hold a tryout for a female kicker this spring. According to reports from the Washington Post, Lauren Luttrell tried on at least two occasions to make the Virginia Tech football team.
Luttrell made her first four attempts off a tee to make it through the first round of the competition along with six others, but missed a 35-yard field goal from the left hash in the next round that ultimately eliminated her from contention.
And though Luttrell didn’t quite make the cut, she is not giving up on this dream. She plans to meet with Ballein and Beamer on Monday in hopes of figuring out a way to continue training in a more structured environment, and perhaps try out again next season.
We want to wish Ms. Luttrell the best of luck going forward.
Part 2....
It's contagious!
I think it's a disease, or something like one.
No, I am not talking about Bobby( insert IDIOT here) Petrino, and his self made disaster. I'm referring to the chance that Augusta Country Club had to possibly move it's centuries old thought process into a more modern, and more intelligent decision making apparatus.
What bothers me is that there has been a precedent set that the IBM CEO would get an automatic invitation into the storied Augusta Country Club. I know that if I were a member of the IBM policy and decisions board, there would be no way IBM could be a sponsor of the Masters Tournament ever again.
Part 3....
Yesterday we found out that Arkansas Razorback coach Bobby Petrino had not been entirely honest in his original press conference immediately following his motorcycle accident. It seems the police report contains the information that someone else was with Petrino at the time of the accident. That someone happens to a woman that he is having an affair with, that he also hired into the football program. The woman's name is Jennifer Dorrell, and she is reportedly engaged to be married to another man.
At 9:45 pm Central time last night, University of Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long held a press conference announcing that Bobby Petrino has been put on PAID Administrative leave until a full determination and review can be accomplished. Coach Petrino will not be permitted perform the duties of his position. Assistant Coach Taver Johnson will assume the duties of the Head Coaching position until the completion of this review.
I hope we never see it in person....
Seems the Liberty Bowl is getting a facelift. The 9 million dollar renovation will include a 2.5 million dollar video board paid for by Fed-Ex. I hope it looks good thru the screen of my television.
The best video....
Perhaps I was distracted by the ">video. I was so impressed with the quality of the runs, and that wonderful track laid down, that Ladarious Phillips instantly became a favorite of mine. Whatever the reason, Phillips has decided to end his Auburn career, and transfer to Jacksonville State. Phillips apparently is leaving on good terms, and has nothing but good things to say about his time at Auburn.
He said his decision to leave Auburn came down to playing time, and he plans to transfer to JSU.
"I really enjoyed it. You can’t get no better than Auburn, D-I (Division I)," he said. "I just felt like I needed to transfer to go somewhere and get some playing time."
Jawara White Ends Football Career
"Jawara White has sustained an injury that will no longer allow him to play football," coach Gene Chizik said in an Auburn release. "Although this is disappointing for Jawara, our medical staff, his family and our coaching staff all agree that this is in his best interest. At Auburn, our top priority is and will always be the health and welfare of our student-athletes. Jawara will continue to work toward receiving his degree from Auburn and will always be a part of our Auburn family."
Late yesterday news started leaking out of an injury to, Rah-Rah as he is affectionately called, and today we have the above statement released from Auburn University head football coach Gene Chizik. During the late evening this writer was able to have a brief conversation via twitter with White wherein he stated that he would be fine. I took that meaning that emotionally he would be okay. Especially after reading the stories of Auburn beat writers.
In this video, linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen briefly mention that the news on White was a "tragedy". In my mind, that spelled out all the information needed.
After the news broke this morning Jawara White tweeted, "Giving up the game of football is hardest thing I ever had to do. Thank you all for the prayers WAR EAGLE."
All of our prayers go out to White, and his family, while he transitions into a new phase in his life.
Kentucky Burns While Football Fans Get Hosed
First let me explain why I am posting here, and not your regular Wednesday hero. WEA and ATM have been traveling, and asked me to come up with something for today, and I was more than happy to oblige that request. So, without further ado, let's get started.
Kentucky blues....
In what has to be the an embarrassing scenario, the Kentucky Wildcat fans reaction to their basketball team winning an 8th National Championship, is to loot, burn and destroy other peoples property. Oh yeah, they shoot at each other too.
Battalion Chief Ed Davis of the Lexington Division of Fire and Emergency Services said he saw the shooting as he was filling out paperwork on a wreck involving a fire engine. Davis said he heard yelling about 25 feet away, and one man started shooting at another. He said the gun was fired "quite a few times."
Following in the footsteps of that great West Virginia Mountaineer tradition, the Kentucky fans honored their hillside cousins with this....
"We're seeing fires being lit and things of that nature," Roberts said, adding that people had set couches and at least one car on fire.
Congratulations go to the Kentucky Wildcats for winning the 2012 NCAA Final Four National Championship, for some of their fans, all I have to say is this. Stay classy Kentucky, stay classy.
Just what we need....
In a proposal to effort change in the NCAA, one panel has proposed to turn over control of the Bowl games to the Conferences, and their administrators.
An NCAA task force is proposing sweeping changes to the postseason college football structure that would turn over the majority of oversight of bowls to conferences themselves. Documents obtained by CBSSports.com show that the NCAA Postseason Task Force would essentially transfer the legal responsibility of running the postseason to the commissioners and their leagues.
There are too many nightmares following this train of thought. The first to come to mind, is that we would never see a real National Champion in football, if we have to get all those conferences to agree with each other. The Bowl game situation would get worse, instead of better, and the popularity contest that is the polling system now in place, would forever be in control.
The only positive I see coming from all of this would be the lower number of 6-6 teams making a Bowl game. That is hardly enough of a good thing, to hand over the Bowl system to the league offices.
Oh, and there is this from the Sporting News....
Also, CBSSports.com reported that sources had concern about title sponsors and the images that come with them. The example used was the GoDaddy.com Bowl in Mobile, Ala., because of GoDaddy.com’s racy commercials.
There is no way that this suggestion by the panel would be fair, or fan friendly. Has the NCAA not been listening to the people who purchase the "Golden Egg" every year? The very people that buy season tickets, travel at times, hundreds of miles to see a regular season game, and hundreds of more miles, if not thousands of miles, to see their team in a Bowl game.
Turning over your Bowl system to the very ones that make the most money, would be a slap in the face to every college football fan in the country. Think about it for just a minute. These conferences and their administrators are trying desperately to lure the top schools away from their current conference affiliation, and now we are expect them to play nice because of Bowl games? It will not work, not for us the fan.
You have to believe that there is animosity between the Big 12, along with it's favorite child the University of Texas, and the South Eastern Conference over the stealing away of Missouri, and Texas A&M. So, how are we supposed to believe that the two conferences are going to play nice when it comes to Bowl decisions that involve either conference? INSANITY! That's what this thought process is. All to save the NCAA some money. You know that is what the reason behind all this is, just money.
And once again, we the fans will be screwed over by the very sport we love, and support.

Surprises, Success, and Struggles: The Story of Auburn's 1st Scrimmage
Saturday marked the first scrimmage of Auburn football this Spring, and to the delight of this writer we have many good points to discuss.
Surprise-Offensive Line warriors....
During Kiehl Frazier's post scrimmage interview some interesting items came up in his comments. The most significant was the mention that Greg (Robinson?) couldn't go and Pat Miller( the LSU switcheroo) and Chad Slade "had to go with both groups sometimes, so they had to play the whole scrimmage out there today, I thought they did really well"
On the defensive side, Keymiya Harrell was singled out by Coach VanGorder for his play, especially late in the scrimmage.
Success-Sammie, Sammie, Sammie....
No matter who is asked, whether it be a defensive back, or any of the QB's, to a man they all have praise for Sammie Coates.
During the same interview we mentioned above, Kiehl was asked whether Sammie has "kinda gotten" his attention out there as a receiver?. Frazier responded with this gem.
"Oh yeah, I mean definitely, he's one of the most athletic guys I have ever seen".
Struggles....
That old menace the "third down defense", or lack thereof, reared it's ugly head in the first scrimmage. Old habits die hard, but this problem is feeling zombie like, it just will not die.
I certainly hope the intensity we keep hearing about from Coach VanGorder gets turned up a couple of notches. This problem has to die, or we'll just have to air mail it to west vance.
VanGorder also mentioned the big plays the offense made Saturday. He did not like that the offense was able to produce big plays.
"We just can not give up big plays, and be a good defense" VanGorder told reporters. Citing that mistakes were made and that it was "still early" in their learning process, did not seem to sooth the noticeable burr those big plays caused Auburn's new defensive coordinator.
Friday Ramblings: Basketball, Football & more....
The Kenny Gabriel Show....
During the Final Four Auburn wonder kid Kenny Gabriel participated in the Dunk portion of the State Farm Slam Dunk & Three Point Contest. Gabriel finished second, with a couple of really nice slams. One that impressed me was where his partner switched the ball to the opposite hand underneath his legs, bounced it of the side of the backboard, and then KG caught the pass, and did a 360 degree rotation to finish with the slam DUNK!
Kenny has been a an Auburn basketball favorite since his arrival on the Plains. The event was televised on ESPN at 9pm Eastern Time, last night, so they may show a replay sometime soon.
Continuing Auburn Basketball....
K.T. Harrell, formerly a Virginia Cavalier, has decided to transfer to Auburn and finish his college basketball career on the Plains. With the departure of two scholarship athletes from the Tigers squad earlier this year, Mr. Harrell is a welcome addition according to Coach Barbee.
"He based his decision to go to Virginia more on his relationship with Coach Bennett than the system," his father, Rodney, said. "K.T.’s always been an aggressive guard, very versatile."
Thanks to the War Eagle Extra for the quote, and story.
An "Auburn Fan Favorite" follows former coach....
Zac Etheridge came to Auburn in 2006 and was redshirted seeing limited action, then became a second team Freshman All-American in 2007. By 2009 against Ole Miss Etheridge had 33 consecutive starts, during that game against the Rebels, he suffered a traumatic neck injury. Most folks counted him lucky just to be able to walk after that, but Zac had different intentions. After fulfilling his Auburn football career, Zac has now been tabbed by Ted Roof as a Graduate Assistant at Penn State.
We would like to wish Zac the very best, and hope he continues to be an inspiration to everyone he coaches and mentors.
What did you do during spring Break?....
Clint Moseley, along with Coach Gene Chizik, and Auburn team Chaplain Chette Williams, and several other players, went for a little ride. All the way to Liberia. Moseley called it a trip of a lifetime.
"She had to walk about two miles to get water from the well in the village and then go sell it, hope to sell it, just to have one meal for her and her grandmother a day," said Moseley, Auburn's junior quarterback. "Sometimes they don't get it. She was just telling us that, not crying or wanting pity".
Williams, also known as "Brother Chet" talks about his time at Auburn, and what it has meant to him and the players he has counseled.
"A championship game is just a moment in time. What we are trying to do is help these guys be productive throughout their lives. I love to win, but to have a young man’s life changed, that’s way more important than a game."- Chette Williams
For all the grief that Tommy Tubberville gets, he should be praised for the starting of this program at Auburn.
Chizik Looks For Toughness During First Practice in Pads
Gene Chizik was not exactly pleased with the physicality of the first Auburn spring practice in full gear.
"We are trying to develop a physical mentality that we need, which we are a ways off. Today they started okay at best, but they picked up a little at the end Wednesday the need to pick it up early."
Also there are injuries to report. Clint Moseley has an inflamed rotator cuff, and did not throw in practice on Tuesday.
Running back Tre Mason says he is ready for the contact part of practice. I am pleased with his attitude, and his eagerness to get better. Watch this video and see if you aren't equally impressed.
The Tigers take today off, and will get back after it on Wednesday.

Spring Football Notes
What a great weekend, we had wonderful weather and some very interesting revelations about our young Auburn Tiger football team.
The first thing that sticks out is how cut and developed the players look. Coach Chizik said during the first interview Friday, that he was really impressed with how good these men look strength wise, and that their work ethic during winter workouts really shows.
Jeff Whitaker has lost 22 pounds or more, and actually gained strength, while LaDarius Owens gained weight and strength. There are numerous stories at all the positions on the team. All of those questioned have praised Coach Yox, and his staff for helping to get them headed in the right direction.
editors cut*** Auburn received a commitment from the 6th ranked DE in the country this weekend. Our friends at rivals.com tell us so.
Milton (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star defensive end Carl Lawson, rated by Rivals.com as the No. 8 strongside defensive end in the country, informed Auburn head coach Gene Chizik Saturday night of his intentions to sign with the Tigers in February.
Recruiting hardly ever stops in this business.
Your preliminary offensive line starting rotation is already in place. Thanks to 24/7 Sports we have it here for you.
LT: Greg Robinson
LG: John Sullen, Sr.
C: Reese Dismukes, So.
RG: Christian Westerman, RFr./Eric Mack So.
RT: Chad Slade, So.
Clint Moseley stated in an interview yesterday that the new offense is completely different. "In every way".
Praising Offensive Coordinator Scot Loeffler, Moseley said that "You can take it to the bank" when Coach Loeffler tells you something. "He says we are all even", and that's something that Moseley appreciates. I was however disappointed in some of his responses to the questions Saturday, hopefully it was more nerves, than insecurity. Judge for yourself.
Monday the teams gets after it in full pads. Until then, enjoy the day, and if you can, get out to Auburn and pull the baseball team to a sweep of those pesky Bengal Tigers from LSU.

Spring Means One Thing, Football
Here is a video of Auburn spring football practice this morning, courtesy of The War Eagle Extra
There are others out there. One is on al.com
Two things I first noticed on these videos is the intensity of Scot Loeffler, the other is how meticulous Loeffler is. Even the little details drive him. In the video from al.com Loeffler throws drops his papers on the ground in disgust, then walks over to Zeke Pike, and teaches him what he wants Pike to do.
Also, we can look at the spring roster provided by the University. Interesting items on both of the posts by HABOTN and Joel at TWEA
One thing that struck me was that Joel Bonomolo is no longer on the football roster, and of course not participating in spring drills. The other item was the once again moved, Anthony Morgan, he is now at Wide Out.

Friday Ramblings
Learning what we already know....
Early this week the world found out just how blessed our Auburn football program is to have Gene Chizik as the CEO. Something most of us already believed. In an article exploring the terrible tragedy of the Porter family auto accident, there are life lessons.
Always a Roy Williams fan, Porter gained a better understanding of the kind of compassion North Carolina's head basketball coach has when he received a sympathy letter from him in January. He also learned a little more about Auburn head football coach Gene Chizik, who expressed his sympathy on Lovell's voicemail around 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, approximately three hours after leading his team to a win in the Chick Fil-A Bowl.
While leaving a voicemail may not seem like much on the surface, the little things have helped the Porter family through these tough times. WE could all learn a lesson from that
Show compassion, do what you can to help, and do a little extra each day for someone else. Roy Williams, and Gene Chizik get it.
UGA looses another RB....
In what has to be a concern to Georgia Bulldog fans, another star Running Back has decided to leave the program, this time, it's of his own free will.
Bulldogs coach Mark Richt announced Tuesday that Thomas has decided to switch schools for his senior season. Richt said he and Thomas discussed the decision and that he wishes him the best.
Looking around....
Each week I plan to do a little looking around at the other conferences, and their respective divisions to see who may just be able to upset the apple cart of SEC BCS Championships. We have discussed the possibility of other conferences being able to do just that, and now I will explore whom within those conferences has the best shot at being "that team".
After looking around the world wide web, I found an excellent post about the Nebraska Cornhuskers. I had already had an inkling that they would be my choice among their Legends Division rivals in the Big 10, and the more I look into their returning players, the more I am convinced that they are the team to beat in that division.
There are plenty of returning players with game experience, lots of Seniors and Juniors for leadership, and a very good coaching staff. The balance seems right, but the thing that impresses me the most? It's the language of the players. They are talking and acting an awful lot like the Seniors that were on the Tigers squad just prior to the magical 2010 season. Keep an eye on Nebraska, this upcoming season, they are going to be good. They intend to be great.
Friday Ramblings: Spring Break Primer
There are several things for us to discuss this week including the start of the NCAA basketball tournament known affectionately as "March Madness".
The good works of Lee Ziemba....
The former Auburn lineman and other Carolina Panther football players, along with Head Coach Ron Rivera spent some off time spreading cheer among some special Panther fans at Levine Children's Hospital.
Pulling for the trees....
In this story from our friends at The War Eagle Reader, we learn that the Oaks at Toomer's Corner are "not out of the woods, yet". They have a full length video of the press conference concerning our precious Oaks. Browse around while you are there, they do great work.
Trial date reset....
The infamous "al from Dadeville" tree poisoner, and extreme Alabama football fanatic, has had the new date set for the trial stemming from the poisoning of the trees at Toomer's Corner.
Judge Jacob Walker III ordered the new court date Wednesday at the Lee County Justice Center after Updyke's attorney filed a motion with the Court of Criminal Appeals to have Walker recuse himself.Walker's decision on a new court date followed a round of private conversations between Updyke's attorneys and prosecutor Robbie Treese.
I hope the timing of this hasn't lessened the severity of the punishment this person receives. I can not help but believe ol' al gets a benefit from the news that there are some positive signs the trees are looking better, if not actually getting better.
AUsome links: Brackets galore....
It is that time of year, you know. Everybody and their brother have a bracket you can fill out, and we are no different.
Former Auburn punter Lewis Colbert, authored a book recently.
"I have missed a great opportunity, more than 20 years of being able to make a difference in people’s lives," said Colbert, who was born with a club foot and became an All-American punter at Auburn University in the 1980s.
It goes without saying what has brought on all the articles and discussions on the gambling subject. Although this seems to be a pretty decent take on point shaving.

Friday Ramblings: Recruiting the QB's
Let's take a moment to evaluate what changes in offensive football philosophy will mean to our current QB's, and then those that Scot Loeffler, our offensive coordinator, will try to recruit to Auburn. After three years of the HUNH, or Hurry Up No Huddle style offense, the Tigers will incorporate new schemes and terminology into their scoring efforts.
The HUNH is a spread style offense. That simply means that the offense lines up spread out all over the field, in an effort to spread the defense out, so there are potentially less defenders to respond to the actual play. The Achilles heel to this style of offense is defensive speed. Something most SEC defenses have in spades is speed. Therefore the challenge now is to be as flexible in your offense as possible.
Hence the change in Gene Chizik's offensive strategy, is to not be married to one style of offense. Being able to line up in a 2 TE(Tight End) set, on one play, and then a 4 WR(Wide Receiver) set the next play, without having to change personnel would be a huge advantage for any offense. In effect, what you would see is Auburn lining up in the spread on one play, and then the power pro set the next, and doing so without having to interchange players between the plays.
To do this would require two things. First, you need to have smart, talented players. Secondly, you need a coach that can create a playbook based on that talent, and use that as effectively as possible. I can confidently assure you that Auburn has recruited smart, talented players since Gene Chizik arrived at Auburn. Now the onus is on Scot Loeffler to produce the playbook.
The basics of quarterback play change very little when we talk about run first play action vs. run first spread in the HUNH. The QB will make sure everyone is lined up correctly, will make his reads of key defensive players, hand the ball off or pass it, and direct his team down the field. Basic QB play.

Varez Ward Implicated In Point Shaving Probe
In an apparent ongoing investigation, an Auburn basketball player, Varez Ward has been the subject of a point shaving scheme being investigated by the FBI.
The story has been posted by Yahoo Sports.
Three sources with knowledge of the case said the FBI has been investigating Ward since late February after he and guard Chris Denson were suspended by the Tigers prior to a Feb. 25 home game against Arkansas. Two sources said Denson was also questioned as part of the point-shaving investigation, but he was cleared of any wrongdoing and returned to the team after sitting out the loss to the Razorbacks. The sources said additional players have been questioned in the case about whether Ward – who has not been with the team since being suspended – attempted to enlist them in a possible scheme. The sources said at least two games are under scrutiny: a 68-50 loss to Alabama on Feb. 7 and a 56-53 loss to Arkansas on Jan. 25.
Auburn coach Tony Barbee has been quoted in the article saying...
"Kids have to learn a lesson," Barbee said of Denson last week. "It’s bigger than sports. It’s about life. Sports – including what we do, basketball – is a great opportunity and a great vehicle to teach these kids life lessons. … He had to suffer the consequences for some bad decisions."
More to come...
Auburn Sinks LSU 67-52
Auburn basketball coach Tony Barbee had nothing but praise for his Seniors after the game tonight. A game that saw a very different Auburn team at times. A basketball team that made free throws down the stretch, to seal the victory even when the patented second half slump was in full effect.
"What I know about my team is that we are going to go into New Orleans with a lot of confidence with a little bit of momentum," Barbee said. "In this league, we haven’t gotten over the hump and beaten people, but we have played well against everybody in this league."
In a moment made for the big screen, Auburn's student section began chanting for Senior walk-on Jake Drum to be put into the game, and Coach Barbee was happy to oblige to the massive cheer that erupted from the Auburn Arena.
Auburn (15-15, 5-11) converted 12-of-14 free throws in the last 3:31 to secure the win. Senior walk-on Jake Drum, whose name was being cheered by the student section for several minutes, came in, got a steal and scored his first points of the season with two free throws with a minute to go to give the Tigers their largest lead of the night at 67-50.
Soon after the Twitter world was showing it's appreciation by trending Drums name with terms of Drumsanity exploding all over. This was the scene from twitter right after the game ended...

Friday Ramblings: Recruiting perspective
Recruiting adjustments....
The signing of Valor High prospect Alex Kozan has changed the recruiting dynamic for the 2013 class. How can signing one guy create a change in future recruiting? I am so glad you asked that. I'll attempt to answer that for you, after I preface my thoughts with this statement, "As things stand right now".
Who knows what the future holds, but as long as things remain relatively the same as they are right now, Auburn will only have about 13 scholarships available for the 2013 class, and 3 or 4 scholarships to back date to this class. Remember, Coach Chizik not only has to keep an eye on how many prospects he signs each season, but also the NCAA mandated limit of 85 total scholarship athletes on the roster on August 1st each year.
I hate to beat this dead horse, but I have to, in order to fully explain the situation Auburn faces in relation to that 85 number limit. Blame this on whomever you please, but the fact remains that Auburn only has 15 Seniors on the entire team heading into 2012, and couple of them are walk-ons. So, 13 actual scholarships will be available from graduation, and whatever other type of attrition happens, will add to that.
I will give you my best guess of what spots Auburn tries to fill with this upcoming class. Your comments and suggestions are welcome in the thread.
Quarterback - 1 maybe 2
Offensive line - 2 maybe 3
Running Back - 2
Wide Out/ TE - 3 maybe 4
Defensive Line - 4 maybe 5
Linebacker - 3 maybe 4
Defensive backs 3 maybe 4
That gives us a total of 18 maybe 24. I will say that I do not believe Coach Chizik will sign 24 players. That would mean that someone that has a scholarship, would be forced to give it up for an incoming player. You can forget that ever happening while Chizik is at Auburn.

The Auburn Recruiting Trail
This past Saturday, Auburn held it's Spring Junior Days event, and have already garnered some impressive results. In fact Saturday afternoon Coach Chizik received a commitment from Pinson Valley wide out Earnest Robinson. The nations 101st top prospect according to Rivals.com. Below are some links to stories around the WebSphere.
At 6-2, 200 pounds, Robinson fits the mold of the two receivers brought in with the 2012 class, JaQuay Williams and Ricardo Louis. He was slowed by injury at Pinson Valley during his junior season, but Robinson still turned 30 catches into more than 500 yards and 12 touchdowns this season in Pinson Valley’s run to the second round of the playoffs.
"Coach Chizik had told me that Auburn would not drop me if I got hurt," Robinson said. "He was saying other coaches might look at me differently if I got hurt and could not play for the rest of my senior season. He said Auburn would show me that once I was a part of the family that I would still be at Auburn even if I got hurt."
How good is Robinson? We’ll he’s 6-foot-2, weighs 200-ish pounds and has scholarship offers in hand from Alabama, LSU and basically every major program you hear about on autumn Saturdays.
Friday Ramblings
Auburn starts this spring anew. Photo(s) courtesy of al.com (via media.al.com)
Spring practice set to start March 21st....
To tell you how happy I was just to type that, I was at a loss for words, initially. Never fear, I have recovered, and you my dear reader, will be the one that suffers through my giddiness.
There are tons of things for Auburn to accomplish when Spring practice starts. A starting quarterback, offensive line, linebackers, basically everything from A to Z.
Gene Chizik will be judged more on this season, and the two coordinator hires he made this offseason, than all of his previous three years here. It's that important to Auburn fans, fair or not. That's not saying he is on a hot seat or anything like that. My point is, the philosophical change that's apparent from a distance, must be a smooth transition, and be tailored to work with the incredible amount of talent that is on the Plains.
Burning bridges?....
Former Auburn defensive coordinator Ted Roof was interviewed by pennlive.com contributor David Jones. In that interview, the time spent at Auburn was discussed in a rather brief way by Roof. Without actually telling us the readers his question, the author seen fit to include this statement by Coach Roof.
"I don't wanna get into that deal," said Roof when asked about the disconnect in philosophy with Chizik. "I just wanna kinda move forward and tell what I wanna do."
The fact that Coach Roof was not willing to throw anyone under the proverbial bus, speaks volumes about his time at Auburn, and his character.
The fact that Mr. Jones sole reasoning for Auburn's step back last season was the departure of Cam Newton, shows us that he did precious little fact checking. In case you want to read the article, it's here.
Ron Cooper....
LSU defensive back coach Ron Cooper has been named "Defensive Back Coach of the Year" by FootballScoop.com. I lead this section with that because Mr. Cooper is heading to Tampa Bay in the NFL. Sorry Jonno.
Kicking our way into the future....
According to Charles Goldberg of al.com among other sources Auburn has received a commitment from a Kennesaw, GA, 2013 prospect Jimmy Hutchinson.
Jimmy Hutchinson from Kennesaw, Ga., said he'd sign with the Tigers next February. He's rated as the No. 1 punter in the nation by punting gurus Chris Sailer and Kohl Kicking Academy. He'd be a freshman when current punter Steven Clark is a senior.
Current AU punter Steven Clark was a finalist for the 2011 Ray Guy Award which is presented to the top punter in the nation annually. Another great season by Clark might just propel him into the NFL Draft a year early, so this is a must have for Chizik and Boulware, as they continue to produce very effective special team units.
Hutchinson is Auburn's 3rd commit for the '13 class.
A Sad Day for Auburn: Goodbye Nell Fortner
via grfx.cstv.com thanks to Auburn Athletics for this photo
After eight seasons at Auburn as Head Basketball Coach of the Women's team, Nell Fortner has decided to pursue other interests.
"I love Auburn and have absolutely loved my time here during the course of the last eight years, I have dedicated the last 28 years to coaching basketball and feel it is time for me to pursue something different. This was not an easy decision, as I have contemplated this for several months, but I am looking forward to the change. I’m proud of where the Auburn program is and what we’ve accomplished."

Friday Ramblings
In all of the discussions about our conference, and its new members, we have heard opinions from us fans, as well as sportscasters. Seems the politics of it all has brought out the professional politicians, to weigh in on their thoughts and even their efforts to sway membership for their school, into one of the four big conferences
One such case is the West Virginia Mountaineers. United States Senator Joe Manchin tried to lobby membership for WVU into the SEC. He even enlisted the help of his friend Nick Saban.
"I thought we could have been in the SEC," Manchin said. "I talked to my dear friend Nick Saban about that, and, like me, he said, 'I would like West Virginia in the SEC,' and we were working toward that."
That effort proved unsuccessful, though no one talked publicly about it last fall.
"They chose Missouri instead, and then you never heard a thing else about it," Manchin said.
Manchin’s relationship with Saban dates back to the days that the three-time BcS champion coach was an assistant under Frank Cignetti Sr. at WVU in the late-70s. Even the power of persuasion Saban possesses, however, wasn’t enough to get his home-state school into the most powerful football conference in the country.
John Taylor of College Football Talk has an entertaining piece on this story HERE.
TCU Football players involved in drug ring....
In another black eye to college football, a scandal has been evolving in Fort Worth, Texas. This time a drug ring involving at least 17 students, including four football players.
"There are days people want to be a head football coach, but today is not one of those days," coach Gary Patterson said in a prepared statement. "As I heard the news this morning, I was first shocked, then hurt and now I'm mad."
This is from the Star-Telegraph, a Fort Worth paper
The players arrested are linebacker Tanner Brock, the team's leading tackler during the 2010 Rose Bowl season; defensive lineman D.J. Yendrey; offensive tackle Tyler Horn; and safety Devin Johnson, according to affidavits.
Tanner Brock was an honorable mention All-American last season. When he was working one one of his deals with an undercover officer he mentioned that 82 players failed the recent surprise drug test. Whether he was telling the truth or not is anyone's guess.
TCU Police Chief Steven McGee released this statement.
"There is no doubt that all of those arrested today are drug dealers," McGee said at a Wednesday morning news conference. "They sold drugs to undercover officers. They dealt on all levels, to students and nonstudents. They would sell to anyone, but our primary focus was those who were dealing to TCU students."
Bigger is better....
In an informal interview this week, Auburn defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder touched on a few topics that we have been discussing here at TET.
**On wanting bigger linebackers -- starting with middle linebackers -- VanGorder said "bigger is better" though he added he's not a "profile coach."VanGorder acknowledged that newcomer 6-foot-3, 233-pounder Cassanova McKinzy would fit that mold.

Where, oh where has my football season gone?
I am no more than a casual observer of the professional game of football. Caring more for how many former Auburn players are on the roster of each NFL team, than anything else at that level.
Auburn Quarterbacks....
Did you know that Auburn had another quarterback join the team this week? Ryan Carter apparently spurned a scholarship offer from Illinois, and decided to try out, and walk-on at Auburn. Carter is 6'2" and 184lbs. Carter played for the Hoover Buccaneers.
Stefon Diggs....
Diggs was set to announce his decision tonight at 10pm Eastern time. The announcement had been scheduled to be on ComcastSports.net Stefon Diggs is considered one of the top 3 recruits in the country, and has offers from most all of the major schools. He has narrowed his choice down to Florida, Maryland, Ohio State, and Auburn. When he actually will announce is anyone's guess.
Don't drive through Bay City, Michigan....
Even if you play football for the Michigan State Spartans, the police will pull you over, and search your vehicle.
Bartynski pulled Robinson over on Dec. 22 and Robinson filed the complaint on Dec. 22. Robinson said in the complaint that he was told he was being stopped for suspicion of having needles in his car, an indication of possible drug activity.
Bartynski allowed Robinson to leave the scene without issuing him a ticket. According to mlive.com, Robinson shortly thereafter posted this on his Facebook page:
"All I do is good for my city and try and set an example for the youth in my city of what not to do but for some reason when I come home and try and visit The Bay City Police always wanna stop me and take me out of my car and search me like I am out here selling dope!! UN believable."
About an hour later, Robinson was eating out with friends when Bartynski entered the restaurant and handed Robinson a $120 citation for failure to signal and said, according to Robinson, "Here you go, role model, here’s a ticket…and I like your post on Facebook."
A myriad of wrongs are perpetuated by the officer in question here, and the fact that nothing has been done by his superiors, is at the very least telling about the mindset in that department. It's sad to think in America today, we still have to live with that sort of unethical behavior from those who are sworn to serve and protect.
A playoff is coming...
I just have a few words right now about a playoff in the FBS. The Big 10, or B1G, says "It's about time the fans were heard". Last year the playoff would have included LSU, Bama, Oregon, and Stanford. No chance at a B1G team making it. In 2010, it would have Auburn, Oregon, TCU, and Wisconsin. Will this system ensure that the SEC can maintain it's dominance?
I look forward to your comments on this.
Comment of the week....
I had to go all the way back to Monday for this selection. After sifting through all the posts and the accompanying comments this week. I made myself a chicken sandwich on at least three different occasions, and no, I did not use jelly for a smother.
I finally came upon this weeks winner from Triumphant Tiger.
there has NEVER been a defending national champion
who has had to deal with such a VENDETTA from our OWN STATE MEDIA! all year long …
I have spent more than enough time on this subject. Our friend however hit the nail rather squarely on the head, and deserves the honors this week.
My take....
Have I mentioned that Auburn was a very young football team last season? Okay, okay! You don't all have to yell at once, geesh. I'm going to discuss that youth, and how it relates to recruiting.
First however I want to remind each of you that Pelton has at least two disciples in the NFL as we speak and one is getting some new finger wear, now that the Giants have won the Super Bowl. Demarcus Ware of the Cowboys, and Osi Umenyiora of the Giants.
Gene Chizik and his staff targeted some very specific needs with this class. Most glaring was the addition of 6 offensive linemen. The Tigers coaching staff added some very high quality depth in most positions, including two defensive linemen.
Why were there not more D linemen added? Auburn actually targeted a couple others, and did not land them, and I think I know why.
If I am a recruit, and I visit Auburn, the first thing I would find out is, who do I have to beat out to win some playing time. Then look and see how many players there are in the NFL from that program, which is my ultimate objective. Once I figure that out, then I would comprise a list of what schools, I have the best chance of earning playing time.
You have to remember that these young men are being told that they are the very best, and that they are the missing element every team needs to win a championship. How many recruits hear this line? "You are the guy, that is going to get us another Championship". I would bet every top recruit in the country hears that on over half of their trips. The very top schools, or at least the ones that have won a recent title, will sell the idea that if a player wants to be a champion they need to pick that school.
Auburn has talent, experience, and youth in it's favor. Next season should yield a very formidable defensive line, with no room for rookies. Until graduation takes it toll on that group, the top recruits won't choose Auburn. They don't think they are redshirt material, when in fact, most true freshmen defensive linemen never see the field.

Friday Ramblings: Moving On
War Eagle everyone,
Today we find ourselves in relative limbo. The sad realization that there will be very little actual football news until spring practice opens, and preparations are made for the annual A-Day game.
Not to worry, we here at Track Em Tigers are going to be providing you with comprehensive, and detailed information about your Auburn Tiger football team, along with improved coverage of Auburn's "Spring Sports" as evidenced by ATM's posts earlier TODAY.
It's been an exciting week that has led up to this and we have several items to discuss today, so let's just get to them.
Shon Coleman....
No matter if you are an Auburn fan or not, this story is gratifying in so many ways. Auburn people can be proud of their coach and of their school for sticking to their commitment with the Coleman family.
Should he complete his journey back and one day take his place the field, the first time his name is called over the public address system Jordan Hare Stadium may not be able to hold the thunderous roar of joy that will shake its foundations.
It's okay, go ahead and cry.
Miami Hurricanes....
Right about the time that Al Golden found out about the pending troubles at the University of Miami, things started to parallel what we Auburn fans have lived with for quite some time now. The wolves were scratching at the door. Recruiting was going to be an uphill climb to be sure.
Recruiting against rival football coaches and other schools would have been the easy part. Al Golden was recruiting against rumors and lies, too.
To be sure, Al Golden was walking in the footsteps of Auburn's coach Chizik. The exception is that Chizik and Auburn knew they were clean. A luxury not afforded to Golden. The parallel ends there.
The full story, which can be read HERE, goes on to say
" He was recruiting against all those dirty headlines wrought by disgraced booster Nevin Shapiro. And against that invisible monster with sharp teeth: The looming, likely NCAA penalties.
Kudos to Al Golden and his staff for pulling in what rivals.com rates as the nations 9th highest recruiting class.
Alabama, Georgia, and Florida, and Florida State, all used negative recruiting tactics against Auburn. It wasn't limited to just them either.
When Dorial Green-Beckham and his family visited Auburn, they returned home to tweets, and internet message board comments, of "Money Grabbers". Thing is, the Beckham family ruled out Auburn because of the distance away from home. The same reason they ruled out Alabama. It's a lengthy read, and by one of the scummiest scumbags on GOD's green earth, But here is the LINK.
Georgia wants it's "Fulmer Cup" back....
This really isn't funny. Quite the opposite, it's sad, and frustrating to hear that any student athlete would be so ignorant and selfish as to do something like this.
Two players, freshman players, defensive back Nick Marshall and wide receiver Sanford Seay, have been kicked off the team, Marshall and Seay reportedly stole from teammates.
Theft is theft, but from your own team mates? C'MON MAN!
Comment of the week....
For the sole reason of sunshine pumping, happy people everywhere are going to like this. This weeks winner is OL_Coach
"This turned out to be a very solid
Recruiting class. I like that this staff swings for the fences on big name recruits. You will miss a few at times, but it’s how you build a top notch program. Factor in the FB transfer, who is not counted in the recruiting rankings, and this is a top 10 class. It also puts us very near the 85 scholarship mark."
CapnVegetto, I hope you don't mind that I have a little fun with your phrasing of my slant on things pertaining to Auburn. I do miss your comments, and posts.
My take....
The old rule of thumb in recruiting was, that a school would see a significant bump in recruiting, a year after winning the BCS. That doesn't apply very well today, regardless of how many times you read it in the reports of the state media.
In today's world, we have instant news, instant communication, and instant gratification. What happened a month ago is seen as old news.
Last year's recruiting class was the bump in recruiting for AU. Gene Chizik understands this. This 2012 class was meant to build quality depth. That was accomplished. Call it swinging for the fences, or landing some big fish, or whatever you want to, Auburn won way more than they lost. Some of those wins were committed early in the process, so they don't get the media's attention on signing day. Too bad, the real news is, AU wins again!

Making Sense of It All
First let me start by welcoming all of our new Auburn Tigers to the family. War Eagle ladies and gentlemen. Not only was today a banner day for our football program, other AU athletic endeavors signed new recruits today as well.
The official AU site has done me a huge favor and made a list of our new football players.

If you noticed there are 13 offensive players, and 7 defensive. The most glaring is the fact that only two are Linebackers. Auburn must make a push next season for a BIG linebacker class. To be fair, this was an unusual year, in that there were few quality LB's out there to be had. Auburn landing two 4* LB's can only be seen as a positive.
Offensive line depth improved leaps and bounds with this class. It should tell you that Jeff Grimes is one heckuva recruiter. That's three consecutive top 5 O line classes since Grimes arrived at AU.
On the opposite side of the ball, Tyler Nero earned high praise at the football camps during both the Under Armour game, and the Army All-American game. Looks like he may have started to peak and mature a little later, than some of the higher rated prospects. Auburn must have seen that coming. Kudos to Mike Pelton for knowing talent before most others did.
Two players that stand out to me are Jovon Robinson, and Joshua Holsey. Mark this day down, they will be special while playing at Auburn.
Overall, this is exactly the kind of class that Auburn needed. Our depth chart is starting to be filled with some high quality talent. It's Gene Chizik's third full class that he alone brought to the Plains. We will soon find out if Auburn is to remain among the best programs in the country.
Replacing both coordinators may cost us some games this year, especially early on, but when this group gets a handle on the new coaches game plans, AU will be a force in the SEC West.
Thanks to all who participated in the thread today, I had a blast.
