SB Nation Atlanta NBA Draft 2012: DraftExpress Projects Tony Wroten To Hawks

With the NBA Draft Lottery set to take place on Wednesday night the full draft order for the 2012 NBA Draft will be set soon. DraftExpress released its final pre-lottery mock and projects Washington combo guard Tony Wroten to the Atlanta Hawks.

The thinking behind the pick is that Wroten would step into Kirk Hinrich's vacated spot. At 6-foot-5 he could seemingly defend both guard spots but he lacks perimeter shooting and isn't anywhere close to Hinrich in that regard. The upside is there however and it makes Wroten an intriguing prospect for this draft. He averaged 16 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists as a freshman at Washington.

If the Hawks decided to go big with their first round selection, Syracuse big man Fab Melo and Vanderbilt center Festus Ezeli are projected to still be on the board according to DraftExpress. They have Melo lasting until the 28th pick and Ezili going as the second pick of the second round or 32nd overall.

SB Nation Atlanta 2012 Falcons Offseason: Offensive Line Intact On First Day Of OTAs

There figures to be a lot of competition for a couple of spots along the Atlanta Falcons' offensive line for the 2012 season but when OTAs began on Tuesday the line was still intact with last season's starters.

Todd McClure was in his familiar center position and was flanked by guards Justin Blaylock and Garrett Reynolds. Sam Baker and Tyson Clabo were holding down the tackle positions. The second unit featured Vince Manuwai and Mike Johnson at guards, Andrew Jackson and Will Sevitek at tackles with Joe Hawley at center.

The third team consisted of second round pick Peter Konz at guard along with Phillip Manley. Tyler Horn lined up at center and Bryce Harris was at tackle. Lamar Holmes is still not practicing because of a foot injury.

There figures to be quite a bit of cross training along the offensive line in the coming days with Konz in particular expected to challenge for a starting job at the guard position.

SB Nation Atlanta 2012 SEC Meetings: Mark Richt, UGA Back Proposed Playoff Plan

The annual SEC meetings are underway in Destin, Florida with a number of items on a packed agenda. One of the biggest things in the world of college football right now is the proposed playoff and what form it might take. SEC commissioner Mike Slive reiterated his support for a format that would place the best four teams in the country in a playoff to determine the national champion.

"I'm in favor of the best four teams in the country playing for the national championship, I've been there for so long," Slive said. "I'm comfortable there. I think it does a lot more for postseason football and potentially for a lot of other conferences."

The selection of those four teams is still the cause for major debate and it isn't surprising that the SEC is going to be against any proposal that requires the participants to be conference champs which would negate any more than one SEC team making the playoff. Mark Richt stated his opinion saying that it should be the best four teams regardless of conference standing.

"We don't think it should be that you must be a conference champion to be able to play in it,"

SB Nation Atlanta Freddie Freeman Injury: Prescription Sports Goggles Expected To Arrive On Wednesday

Freddie Freeman's long wait for prescription sports goggles appears to be about over and he could return to the lineup as soon as Wednesday for the Braves. Freeman has battled vision problems since an early May series in Colorado. He has missed the last four games and is hitting just .150 in the 16 games since that Colorado series.

Freeman's problems stem from his eye not producing enough tears to keep it moist therefore making wearing contacts virtually impossible. He tried a set of glasses but didn't like the way his peripheral vision was effected. His only recourse has been to rest his eyes and treat them with eye drops for the last four days.

It took time for the goggles to arrive as they had to be specially made to fit Freeman's prescription and was compounded by a holiday weekend. Freddie Gonzalez stopped short of saying that Freeman would return to the lineup on Wednesday but it appears he would be on course for this weekend at the very least.

SB Nation Atlanta Falcons OTAs 2012: Asante Samuel Shines In Opening Practice

The newly acquired Asante Samuel wasted little time in making his presence felt to his new teammates. Samuel stepped on the field and instantly began begging quarterback Matt Ryan to throw the ball his way. He ended practice with two interceptions and talked about his first day of practice with his new club.

"That's what you've got to do, put the bull's eye on your shoulder and step up to the table. That's how you get better. If you're talking (trash) and telling them they can't do this and do that, of course they're going to try. You've just got to back it up. If you don't back it up, they're going to clown you."

Samuel's addition will mix up some roles with incumbents Brent Grimes and Dunta Robinson still on the roster. The trio however should fit nicely into new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan's pressure oriented system.

SB Nation Atlanta 2012 Falcons OTAs: Kick, Punt Returner Job Up For Grabs

One of the available jobs up for grabs as OTAs open for the Falcons is the punt/kick returner role that was vacated after Eric Weems signed a three-year deal with the Chicago Bears. Atlanta signed several undrafted free agents that could compete for the job but head coach Mike Smith indicated following rookie camp that the job would likely be filled by someone already on the roster.

Those players on the roster currently that have previous experience include Harry Douglas, Dominique Franks and Brent Grimes. Back-up running back Jacquizz Rodgers could also see his name thrown into the ring.

Douglas performed well in the role during his rookie 2008 season before a knee injury sidelined him the next season. Franks held the return job while in college and got some work there during the preseason last season. James Rodgers appears to be the top candidate among the undrafted free agent crop.

SB Nation Atlanta Cardinals Vs. Braves: Atlanta Still Winless On Mondays

Not only did the Atlanta Braves' losing streak reach eight games but their record for the season on Monday's reached 0-8. Monday's loss was particularly ugly as Tommy Hanson struggled, the defense was suspect and the once potent offense is misfiring from pretty much top to bottom.

SB Nation Atlanta MLB Draft 2012: Stryker Trahan A First Round Possibility For Braves

The Atlanta Braves will have the 21st pick in the 2012 MLB Draft that gets underway on June 4. Many are projecting the Braves to take a pitcher with their first round selection but Matt Grabusky of MLB Draft Guide projects Stryker Trahan of Acadiana High School in Lafayette Lousiana to Atlanta.

Baseball Prospect Nation calls Trahan the best catching prospect in the draft and seems like it will be a long shot for him to be available when the Braves pick.

Really intriguing catching prospect with Projectable defensive tools and legit left-handed power. Good feel for the game and a hard worker. Continues to improve behind the plate. Arm is weakest defensive tool and even that will play at the position. Power offensive profile could land him fifth or sixth in the order on a good club. Some questions about his long term hitting ability, but he shows good aptitude AMD solid hands that should let his power play.

SB Nation Atlanta Cardinals Vs. Braves: Fredi Gonzalez Talks Struggles, Pitching After Monday Loss

After eight straight losses the Atlanta Braves are searching for answers however, there isn't a clear cut solution to their problems. For the last week Atlanta has struggled in nearly every facet of the game but manager Fredi Gonzalez said after Monday's loss that it starts with on the mound with pitching.

"I think starting pitching sets the tone. I thought getting out of the bases loaded jam with no outs facing the middle of the order, I thought it was going to give us a boost, give Tommy a boost to keep going. He got into another jam in the second and got out of it. Maybe he just tired out. I don't want to give anybody any excuses and just couldn't overcome those two high-pitch innings, and we got behind the eight-ball."

The offense is certainly feeling the pressure with Chipper Jones, Freddie Freeman and Brian McCann who returned to the lineup on Monday. The offensive struggles have put pressure on the pitching staff to not make a mistake which has led to everyone trying to do just a little too much.

SB Nation Atlanta 2012 NBA Draft: Latest Mock Has Quincy Miller Headed To The Hawks

We are closing in on the 2012 NBA Draft and many projections have the Atlanta Hawks going big with the 23rd pick of the first round. CBS Sports' Jeff Goodman has Baylor forward Quincy Miller heading to Atlanta in his latest mock draft.

Probably should have stayed in school another year, but he does have plenty of upside. Just didn't look like himself following the knee injury his senior year of high school, but he's a long wing who is an above-average athlete and also fairly skilled.

Interestingly Goodman has the Hawks selecting Miller even with Syracuse big man Fab Melo still on the board. An athletic big man like Melo would be a welcome addition to the Hawks front line but Miller could potentially provide some competition at the small forward position for Marvin Williams.

SB Nation Atlanta Fredi Gonzalez Talks Losing Streak, Health

Forgive Braves fans if they get upset at the first sign of a losing streak as that is what living through a September like last season will do to you. Still a quick peak at the standings shows that when this seven game losing streak started Atlanta was in first place and now sit one game ahead of last place Philadelphia. Slumps in May and June can be overcome much easier than those in September and the team isn't anywhere near healthy at this point whether manager Fredi Gonzalez wants to use that as an excuse or not.

SB Nation Atlanta Fever Vs. Dream Final Score: Indiana Slugs Atlanta 78-62

The Atlanta Dream lost for the second time this season to the Indiana Fever on Sunday falling 78-62 this time at Philips Arena. Indiana turned a free wheeling game early into a gritty defensive affair and one that the Dream did not handle well.

Atlanta jumped out to a 22-13 lead in the first quarter before the Fever slammed the door. Indiana responded by outscoring the Dream 26-13 in the second to take a 39-35 lead into the half. Tamika Catchings came alive in the second quarter scoring 17 of her 25 points in quarter. Atlanta's Angel McCoughtry suffered a hip-flexor injury right before halftime which slowed her for the second half.

Angel McCoughtry finished with 21 points with 11 coming in the first quarter. She finished 5 of 9 from the field and 11 of 13 from the free throw line. Lindsey Harding added 13 points but didn't record a single assist in the game. Atlanta tied a franchise low with seven total assists in the game.

Catchings led all scorers with 25 points and also had 12 rebounds. Katie Douglas added 16 points and Jessica Davenport added 12 off the bench. Indiana's bench outscored their Atlanta counterparts 27-2 for the game.

SB Nation Atlanta Women's College World Series 2012: UGA Falls 2-1 To Tennessee In Super Regional

Georgia's season came to an end on Sunday with a 2-1 loss to Tennessee in Game 3 of the Women's College World Series Super Regional. The Bulldogs dropped Game 1 3-2 on Saturday and won Game 2 1-0 on Sunday to force the deciding game.

The game remained scoreless through the first four innings with both Ivy Rengroe and Erin Arevalo keeping the hitters off balance. The Bulldogs struck first taking a 1-0 lead on a swinging strikeout by Tess Sito that skipped away from catcher Ashley Andrews. Gracie Goulder scored on the play and staked the Bulldogs to an early lead.

Things unraveled a bit for Georgia in the sixth when Raven Chavanne reached on an infield single with one out. Lauren Gibson followed with a single off of the glove of Arevalo to put runners at first and second for the Vols. Madison Shipman then hit what looked like a potential double play ball but Gibson somehow avoided the tag by second baseman Ashley Pauly who tagged Gibson with her glove while the ball was in her throwing hand. After a conference by the umpires everyone was ruled safe loading the bases. Shelby Burchell followed with an RBI single and Kat Dotson hit a sac fly to put the Vols up 2-1.

Ivy Renfroe took it from there shutting down the Bulldogs the rest of the way to earn the win. She picks up the win while allowing three hits and one runs in the complete game victory. Erin Arevalo takes the loss surrendering five hits and two runs.

For more on this matchup Georgia fans should check out Dawg Sports while Tennessee fans should visit Rocky Top Talk.
