My recent conversion to the Chiefs has more to do with me growing up in a state with no pro football team and picking favorite players and following them around. I grew up around Salt Lake City during the reign of Montana in San Francisco and loved the Niners. This local BYU player Steve Young came around and he then became my favorite player so my allegiance to the Niners prevailed. After his retirement from football and subsequent decline of the Niners, I became a more casual fan and followed the local connections in the NFL. Andy Reid played at BYU in Utah so I enjoyed watching his team turn themselves around when he arrived from Green Bay. During the last years of my college degree at the University of Utah, Mr Urban Meyer came to town and reignited my passion for football and the Utes. Alex Smith went 21-1 with the Utes and led the charge to become the first "BCS Bowl Busters" when they were set up against Pitt in the Fiesta Bowl and dispatched them in short order. Alex subsequently was picked #1 in the draft with the Niners and once again I hitched myself to that wagon. After Harbaugh’s short-sighted move of going with Kap, I knew then and there that the Niners window was closed. It was closed because there was no tape on Kap and it was only a matter of time before there was enough on him that defensive coaches would shut him down. And they have. Imagine my delight and surprise when two of the guys I rooted for growing up, Andy Reid as a coach in Philly and Alex Smith as a QB in San Francisco sealed my fate as the most recent convert to the Chiefdom. That is truly serendipity. I now live in Los Angeles, work in Beverly Hills but my mind is in Kansas City. I watched Alex Smith every collegiate and professional ball game and can tell you without doubt in my mind that that kid is born to win. I watched Alex under Harbaugh’s direction take what was then the worst NFL football the season prior (sound familiar) and guide them to a win over the Saints in their first playoff game in years.
