Mets Priority List
Guys, I don't know what to say after this weekend. All I know is that now it seems that this team really needs to get its priorities in order. This is ridiculous that we are now putting the worst pitcher on this team in the bullpen where he can now negatively contribute in a different way: later in games. So what is our priority list? Well, no one really knows right now but this would be mine if I were Omar (and by the way, lets please quit the aggressive ideas on this site- we don't need to fire anyone):
1. Get more then 1 quality starter that won't cost you all that much- I would think of guys like Wandy Rodriguez- young and with a whole lot of upside- the problem is who can we give up? These aren't the type of guys that you can give up prospects for. What do you guys think?
2. This is up for debate- I really think we need a catcher that has the presence of Paul Lo Duca and what he did for this team in 2006. A friend recently told me we should have gotten Pudge in the offseason- I don't know why he said that because honestly Ramon Castro is the same thing. We need a younger guy that has a track record- any ideas?
To be honest with you- those are the only positions that I would be terribly worried about as a Mets fan right now. However, it seems as if the front office isn't actively pursuing anyone. Really the catcher thing doesn't have to be done right away. Getting another quality arm is a must right now, in my opinion.
Could it Be?
Guy it sucks being a Met fan right now. Having the bats disintegrate against guys like Joel Piniero isn't very promising, and seeing a bullpen we paid quite a bit for perform the way they've been performing definitely makes me cringe. But have you ever thought that it could be that these falters have been one day things for these guys? I mean we know J.J. isn't what he was yesterday, walking two guys in a row to start an inning isn't J.J.'s game.
And Sean Green throwing that pitch to Jorge Cantu, well, there's really no excuse for it. It was a bad pitch and he knew it.
Ok so those are two games we may have won if the bullpen didn't blow them. I think we as fans need to take a breath here and look at the game and the team as a whole here. There is a clear need for some leadership outside of Johan Santana, and I think that's obvious. Right now, however, it's important to put the last two years and the memory of them behind us. This is a different team, and people in this community still refuse to believe that.
So give it time, fans.
Will Johan-Johnson matchup become must see TV?
I think today is the day that Johan Santana will be recognized as the soul provider for this team on the mound. As we remember, he struck out ten Nationals in his previous start and and the last time he faced the Marlins, he pitched near perfect ball in a duel with Josh Johnson. This afternoon, Citi Field will witness its best pitching matchup to date as the two square off again from Flushing.
Will this matchup become a rivalry? After all, the Mets and the Phillies quickly became rivals after words from Jimmy Rollins prior to the 2007 season- when the Mets blew it on the final day against these very same Fish. But back to Santana- Johnson.
I want to know what you guys think about these two pitchers facing eachother once again. Will it take a couple more solid pitcher's duels to make these two facing eachother must see TV?
Be Like Pace
Hey guys I'm new here and I just need to say I was at the draft this past weekend and my heart really wanted to see the Rams draft Mark Sanchez with the number two overall pick. However, the obvious and correct desicion was to go with Jason Smith, a left tackle who can be essential to the team's ongoing heartaches on the offensive line.
With the signing of center Jason Brown, I now have faith that this o-line will at least seem somewhat adequate compared with the one we've seen in the last couple of years.
I met Jason Smith shortly after he was drafted on Saturday, (I managed to finagle my way into the VIP section) and of course all I wanted was an autograph for my brand new Rams draft cap. However, as he quickly signed my hat (looked like something any 2 year old could scribble on a wall), I managed to fit three words in to the number two overall pick:
"Be like Pace."
Now, I have no idea if he heard me because the rush of the media and all the people following him appeared to have flustered his image. Compared to the high profile Michael Crabtree who looked like he had already been there and done that, Smith seemed to be going with the flow and letting life take him wherever it may. But my message was clear and weather or not he heard me isn't where the true meaning of this story lies.
Jason already knows what he has to do. He is already very well aware of the state of the team he is going to play for this year. What I said to Jason has an underlying idea of how he needs to play. He needs to play the same way Orlando Pace played when he led the Rams to multiple playoff appearances and a Super Bowl victory.
And you know I really would have liked to see Mark Sanchez don the blue and gold but you know what? This is just another example of playing by the book in the NFL, and the team needs to understand that this will take time. Rebuilding a club through acquiring defensive and offensive linemen takes time.
