50 & 50: An Observation

I don't recall if it was MB or Rice that pointed out during tonight's broadcast that in the entire history of the franchise, only 9 previous Blazer teams have ever reached 50 wins in a season. So, I went and took a glance at the list, and something struck me: every single one of those 9 seasons had a player from the so called "50 Greatest Players in NBA History" list. Each one of those Blazer teams had either Bill Walton, Clyde Drexler or Scottie Pippen on it.

Hopefully, as fans, we're still a few seasons away from taking big winning records for granted like some other teams in the West seem to ;), but for now it's absolutely amazing to me to think that one of the youngest teams in league history just accomplished a goal that previously took some of the best players ever to play the game to reach. And we still have a chance at besting 2 or maybe 3 of those records in the next few games. Wow, just wow.

Remember how this was still supposed to be just a "learning season" for us? So, was that us learning about the league, or vice versa? Or, as Rex might say: RAWR!

The list:

Walton era:

1977-78: 58-24

Drexler era:

1987-88: 53-29

1989-90: 59-23

1990-91: 63-19

1991-92: 57-25

1992-93: 51-31

Pippen era:

1999-00: 59-23

2000-01: 50-32

2002-03: 50-32

I have a spare ticket to tonight's game (up in section 305) and would hate to see it go to waste. First person to contact me can have it. Only downside is you have to sit next to me :). See my profile for my email address. Please include a cell # in your message to make it easier to find each other outside the RG.
