Pride Of Detroit NFL Network

The Lions game is being replayed on NFL Network at 1pm today. I know the replay on NFL.Com had been posted, but I’m not sure if anyone was aware of the Television replay. Lions and Redskins game was one of four games to be replayed. I completely forgot about NFL.Com replaying the game, and since it was available only till Wednesday I missed out. Looking forward to getting home and watching the game.

Pride Of Detroit 2010 Draft (Not a Mock)

I know everything lately has been about the draft (for obvious reasons). Who we as Lions fans want, and who we don’t necessarily want the Lions to choose.

But currently I am struggling with a different dilemma. How do I watch the Draft this year? I am a civil service employee, and have odd days off. Tuesday, Wednesday. So with the Draft being moved to cover three days in primetime this year, my normal routine of taking Saturday, and Sunday off are ruined. I get out of work at 3 pm, so I make it home in time Friday to see rounds two and three.

But the days of having friends over for my annual draft party are basically over. It’s not very exciting to sit and drink debating rounds 4-7 with friends who don’t follow the draft as in depth as I do. Normally we get together on Saturday and eat and drink for the first couple rounds. Rounds where the names on the board are more familiar, being the lone Lions fan in the group tends to lead to a lot of ribbing. Especially when I have to do multiple shots for every receiver that we select.

So, what are your plans for the Draft this year?

Pride Of Detroit FA Signing Announced

According to ProFootballTalk.com “Pac Man” Jones has agreed to terms with the Detroit Lions and a deal will be announced next Tuesday. Stoney just said it on 97.1 the Ticket.

I have been adamantly against this, but ultimately my trust lies with Mayhew, and Schwartz. I don’t like his character, but I do like the way he “played”, key word because its been 3 years since he has played at an elite level.

Pride Of Detroit Different Take on Suh

Interesting article from Killer today regarding majority of Lions nation’s dream target.

Follow the Link

http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2010/03/ndamukong_suhs_agent_doesnt_ma.html

Does this change your view of Suh? What if he demands #1 overall money because he is regarded as the most talented player in this years draft? Just like Crabtree, holding out because he considered himself a top 5 pick, and the best WR in last years draft? I understand the #2 overall pick will make a lot of money, but could he possibly hold out for Stafford/Bradford money? And if so, do you pass on him and target Okung/McCoy/Berry? But if you look at the money, #2 overall is too much money for a Safety. Sorry to ramble.

Pride Of Detroit 2009 Draft

With all of the 2010 draft talk, and the trade CJ nonsense I thought I could bring a little light to the gloom.

With hindsight being 20/20 and all; if the 2009 Draft was to be redone, there would be some obvious changes. Especially with which players would be available to us. Because, and get this our Front Office Knows what it is doing!! Some of the players we chose would have gone much sooner. Levy, Delmas could be 1st rounders. Slammin Sammy could have gone in the 2nd round etc. etc.

Though there are a couple different scenarios that would have made this class stellar, I am not going to complain. I am ecstatic that there are articles written like the one below. Follow the link please.

http://blog.mlive.com/highlightreel/2009/12/don_banks_four_detroit_lions_w.html

I like BP, and what he could mean for us in the future, but if we had taken Oher that would have eliminated the glaring need to address the o-line in the first couple rounds in the 2010 draft. But I like BP, and think the trio of Stafford, CJ, and BP will allow us to cheer on Sundays for a long time. Also D. Williams could be explosive when he catches on, but we could have taken Mike Wallace (if they were set on drafting a WR in the 3rd) and could have helped Staff THIS year with a legit pass catcher. We don’t know D. William’s ceiling though. Not willing to call him a bust yet.

But another year of solid drafting and this team could start to pick up steam.  Let’s keep up the positive spirit guys, this is a rebuilding year. Look at the good things, and what we have to look forward to. GO LIONS!

Pride Of Detroit Comparison?

I’m surprised no one posted, or mentioned this. If someone did I apologize, I didn’t see it. But the New Jersey Nets went 0-18 before finally securing their first victory of the season. I know there are 82 games in a season, but being unable to pull out a victory in 18 attempts in the NBA is a much more dubious honor than going 0-16 in the NFL. At least in my opinion.

In the NFL a team has a week to prepare for the Sunday showdown. In the NBA you play every other night, sometimes in back to back nights. It’s common that NBA players will coast through a game, allowing a team that isn’t as talented as the other to squeak one out. I have to believe that towards the end of last season teams focused on the Lions, not wanting to be “that team” that lost to our beloved franchise.

Do I think there will ever be another 0-16 team? No, Roger Goodell will get his way and the season will be extended to 18 games. Will there be another Ofer? Yes, will it happen next year? No, but it will.

On another note I love my Lions, and hope they win every week.  I really do, but how ironic is it that the year they play themselves out of the #1 pick there is an absolute stud. So frustrating!

Pride Of Detroit BLACKOUT

97.1 The Ticket just stated that the game Sunday will be Blacked out. Our 2nd win of the season we will be unable to witness. Sometimes fans patience is pushed to limits. You would think the Ford's would buy the rest of the remaining tickets, because the Lions Pride is being debuted this weekend. I will unfortunately be at work again. So with someones help maybe I will be able to witness the game. I am also unable to post this because of the 75 word limit. = p

Detroit Bad Boys Bynumite!

With Bynumite playing out of his mind, should he become trade bait? I love watching him, but we have a glutton of guards and the way he is playing we should be able to include him into a trade to bring in a big man.

Tay’s injury kills his potential to be dealt, Joe has to be dying right now. I know I don’t know what he had planned for this season, but he had to have been looking to deal Rip and Tay at some point in this season. Because Tay does not fit in with the new direction of the team, before his injury he just didn’t look comfortable running this offense. Is his defense irreplaceable? Yes, but we have more pressing needs.

Or (and im going to get flamed for this bad) we ship out Stuck and keep Will the Thrill? Because when Bynum is a free agent, he's gone. He will go somewhere where he can start.

Lets see how we do tonight guarding Kobe.

Detroit Bad Boys I am Appalled!

It seems when ever I post here, it tends to be on the negative side. So I try to refrain from posting too much, since lately I tend to disagree with everything Pistons right now. BUT, It has been 2 days and I cant stand that no one has posted on this subject. Below is the Link to the Allen Iverson interview by Scoop Jackson, both of which I have no respect for. But the blatant accusations applied to a team I love has royally disturbed me. There has been no comment from Pistons camp, and I know Joe likes to take the high ground; but you have a sure bet HOF’er calling your orginization liars and here we have received nothing. Yet.

Pride Of Detroit Fran Tarkenton Doesn't like our Boy.  *

Fran Tarkenton isn’t a fan of Matty Light.

http://blog.mlive.com/highlightreel/2009/09/fran_tarkenton_matthew_staffor.html

Also in all fairness, Tarkenton has been a cloud of negativity this off season concerning the NFL. Seems to me he is bitter about the money these current players make. Which raises a whole other debate.

However I do have to say I haven’t been overly impressed with Staff these past 2 games, but from watching the offense it doesn’t feel like Linehan is opening the playbook for him. Almost as if their limiting the opportunities for him to make mistakes. Which hasn’t worked, might as well let him chuck like they did in the pre-season. And I know teams run vanilla coverages in pre-season. But I am pulling for him, and to be honest I am not expecting too much from him this year.

I know a lot of people are down on him right now because of what Sanchez is doing in NY, but you have to realize the talent around him over there. He is succeeding the same way Flacco, and Ryan did last year.

When Joey came on he won a couple games, and graced the cover of Sports Illustrated, but then failed to live up to the hype. I am a staunch believer in Joey (still) that if he would have been handled correctly he would have succeeded.

BUT, I also loved Charlie Batch and Erik Kramer. I root for under dogs, hell I love the Lions.

Remember, this is a rebuilding year no matter what The Schwartz says. He knows it, as should you. This team was not going to the playoffs, and I am keeping to my 4-12 prediction. This is about building for the future. All the big acquisitions were/are stop gaps, and seat fillers. This front office wants to build through the draft, and last I checked the draft only happened once a year.

Keep your heads up, lets focus on the positives that occur during this season.

Pride Of Detroit Here's My Rant

And it has nothing to do with the results Sunday. Which I have adjusted my approach to this season, prepare for the worse and hope for the best. Enjoying the maturation of Matthew Stafford. But anyways..

I received my copy of The Sporting News Saturday, and was just thumbing through it in my favorite reading location. This week is the top 100 NFL players issue and I wanted to see what the critique was of CJ. The frustrating part was I had to continue flipping until I came to CJ, get this ranked #82. I thought ok, he is a WR maybe they had them ranked lower this year. So I went through it more thoroughly trying to see how many WR's were ranked ahead of him.

The magic number? 7, seriously!? Brandon Marshall was #78, are you kidding me?!

I can see him being ranked behind Moss, A.Johnson, Fitzgerald. But Wayne, Bolden, Marshall...I cant remember the other one, and i'm not heading back up to the john to look it up. Wait it came to T.O, who is over the hill.

CJ's numbers alone last year should catapult him to the 4th spot, so there's my rant. It comes right after eating dinner and a visit to my reading spot. Pretty much fat and happy at the moment.

Detroit Bad Boys Big "Ego" Wallace to wear #6

http://freep.com/article/20090902/SPORTS03/90902095/1051/Pistons-center-Ben-Wallace-will-wear-No.-6

As you know I am not  a fan of this signing, and see no positive for the Pistons other than having a big body to put in a game for garbage minutes, and extra fouls to use. But I am happy that he is not hounding Stuckey for #3, so a point for Wallace in my book.

Maybe he should wear #1.5. Seeing as though he's half the player he was before he left.

Pride Of Detroit Regular Season Individual game Tickets

When do these go on sale? I checked Stubhub, and like normal their way over priced. Looking to get in on the Browns game Nov. 22nd. My Father In-Law lives in Cleveland and is planning on coming up for the game. I have to work Sundays this year so I need to put in for time off way in advance, my DVR is going to be receiving a work out this year.  If the games are not blacked out.

Detroit Bad Boys Transition

I have been engrossed by my Detroit Love interests lately. Lions OTA's, the Wings playoffs, Tigers hot streak (Leyland sticking with EJ yesterday?! Major balls), and the Pistons rebuilding.  I know I have said it before, but there isn’t a better run professional sports organization in America than the Wings. They have 3 Super duper stars that haven’t even tallied a point in this series, yet they are up 2-0. Their scouting is unreal. I can’t miss a second! And I have been reading up on the Pistons. Gearing up for the draft, I believe Joe has some moves planned (good or bad, lately his moves have been bad). Waiting on our Boston miracle, ala Danny Ainge.

Anyone else just sick right now watching Chauncey in the West Finals? I was heartbroken when he was traded and I have suffered a serious hangover ever since. I thoroughly enjoyed the Pistons getting swept by the Cavs, The Palace sounding like Quicken Loans Arena, it just made me feel all gooey inside... (sarcasm)

I was yelling at my TV, and cursing Joe Dumars every game. Now I hear that Ben Gordon is a target in the off-season. You’re telling me that we can add Ben Gordon as opposed to having Chauncey Billups?! What a huge upgrade! Not. And all that cap space we traded for? Gone…. Due to the economy. We were supposed to have excess of $32 million, now were looking at $26-$27 million. Might not sound like much of a difference, but in all actuality it’s huge! $5-$6 million is the veteran minimum. That’s a player we just lost out on, or the difference in a bidding war with another team.  Makes rebuilding that much harder. With the space available Joe can add 2 marquee players (cough). Are the Pistons 2 players away? No, not considering the talent that has been mentioned. Boozer, Memo, Milsap (wait, talking about all these Utah players they must have won the Title, right?) If Bosh or a player of his caliber isn’t added to this team, Joe has some ‘splainin to do. Trading away a top 3 point guard for (limited) cap space is ridiculous. We should have walked away with their 2009, 2010 first round picks, that could have helped us obtain a player from another team. Because of the move Denvers GM won the Executive of the year award for petes sake!!

Don’t fool yourselves making the Playoffs this year was no feat. We ended the season with a losing record, so what if we qualified for the Leastern Conference playoffs? We lost draft position to say we made the playoffs? I feel so much better, wait we are rebuilding... Then in his end of season presser he stated that Stuckey isn’t a true point? Their going to address that need, WTF?! Stuck would have been better playing with Chauncey than RIP in the long term. This team is nowhere near a contender, not even for the Conference. Watching Chauncey and “Melo light up the Bestern Conference, with less surrounding talent than what is currently on the Pistons roster makes me sick.

‘Melo? Yeah we could have had him. But we had Tay, right? We didn’t need a 3, is that why he is being shopped around right now? No one wanted ‘Melo because of his attitude, he  has been a stud since Chauncey joined him. They are 2 superstars playing like superstars, the difference with Chauncey? He’s healthy, we haven’t seen him healthy in awhile; and now that he is look at him go. Poor Joe. Talent wins, period. Walter Sharpe, the guy we traded out of the first round for? We took him over CDR, and Chalmers. Didn’t they have impressive rookie campaigns? Millen has hit on more talent in the Draft over Joe. That’s sad, and yes I know football has 7 rounds.

There will be individuals that will call me out as fair weather, but I am still a die hard Pistons fan. I love Detroit sports too much to sit idly by and not voice my opinion. That’s why Blogs were created. That’s why majority of us Lions fans complained during and after the draft. The Pistons and all the love for Joe needs to be put on probation, the man has made serious mistakes and everyone is giving him a pass. Dombroskie was fried last year, but praised the 2 previous years. Now he looks like a genius again. Follow the track record, Joe needs to step off of his mighty horse and focus. Joe has been granted 5 years of free passes due to winning a title. Now it is time to perform again. We demanded it from Chauncey, and he paid the price. When does Joe?

Everyone loves Mayhew right now, and with my current feelings for Joe D I am going to step off the Mayhew love train until the season is underway. Too many times we label GM’s geniuses. I was ecstatic when we hired Millen, hated him at the end. Unless your name is Ken Holland, the jury is out.

Pride Of Detroit Larry Foote released by Steelers!!

Larry Foote was released.. WOOT! Get on the Horn Mayhew, you need this for the fan base after questionable draft picks this weekend. Grab him please!!

Otis Wiley also was signed byt the Lions, I think it is a very nice pick up. When his knee is healed he would be a very valuable componet.

Pride Of Detroit 2009 Season

Well, the Draft was compared to Christmas for us Lions, and Sunday night I guess I knew what it felt like to have received coal as a gift. I killed many brain cells, during and after the draft with vodka. But a curious thing happened today when I reflected. I stepped back and evaluated the selections, and I am actually surprised. They aren’t half bad.

I told myself going into the draft that it would hinge on who they selected at #20. Malualuga, Laurinitas, P. Jerry, and Oher all had in my opinion either reached their ceilings in college and were potential busts in the making. These players were the general census to go at #20. What did Detroit do? They took, other than Curry, the most complete player available.

I do not have faith in Mayhew / Lewand. But I do in Schwartz, I am on record stating the Lions will win 3 games next year. This draft was not an end all, be all. It was the first step in acquiring a complete puzzle. If someone hands you a quarter of the pieces in a jigsaw puzzle you cant complete the puzzle, and what you have looks like a hot mess. But with the upgrades to the defense this year, not an overhaul like the fans wanted; we will win 3-4 games and have a top 3 selection again. After next years free agency period and College Draft we will be half way where we need to be. Then I will determine where we are as a team, for myself. But this upcoming season is pretty much like the Pistons 08-09 season, a wash. A base for the foundation.

Keep your heads up.

Pride Of Detroit Last Post pre-Draft

Ok, I have been scouring the internet since I got up this morning (Christmas Eve for NFL fans) and I haven’t seen hide nor hair of anything new. So either things are at a stand still which greatly reduces the chances of a contract being signed by Stafford, or something is in the works.

Charlie Casserly stated he started working on deals with Reggie Bush and Mario Williams 2 Weeks before the draft. Williams deal was finalized the night before the Draft around 10pm if I remember correctly. So if you start a contract discussion a week in a half prior then have major hick ups, i'm thinking it doesn’t get done.

The longer we go without word the better chances of having Curry play for us. I think the Lions have 2 plans they will set in motion depending on todays outcome. If Stafford signs I believe the Lions go in a different direction, OT pick #20. If Curry signs you take a DT pick #20 or what they do with that pick, i.e. trade down.

I believe they go one of two routes because you want to help the #1 player chosen to succeed. Drafting Stafford would require a young LT to keep him safe. Drafting Curry you would want a solid DT in front of him to enable him to make the big plays that is required.

I think the Lions go Delmas, V. Davis or an interior lineman with #33. After that I can see Mayhew going with the best option on the board. Trading back to acquire more picks or the best talent, I don’t think there is a firm board they will be following. Too many holes.

One last, sad thought. Have you noticed the “kid gloves” that analysts have used in dealing with the Lions. Not any overly scathing comments (saving those for the Pistons), very different from previous years when it was open season.

Pride Of Detroit Mayhew

I am LOVING Martin Mayhew right now, he is showing the rat-like Tom Condon who is in charge. Placing Condon in the uncomfortable position of scrambling for answers. Mayhew is actually backing up his words, and giving Detroit a good face. The "experts" on ESPN can disagree all they want, but they don't buy Lions tickets.

After I have lost all Love for Joe D. I don't see how he makes this season an anomaly, he has thrown us in full rebuilding mode even when he said he wanted to avoid that at all costs. I would gladly take 50-55 wins this year, and finish in the top 4 in the League.  How can you reload when you lose half your roster, which is going to happen. Plus I doubt he was banking on ALL of that free agent money he is saving up for to be depleted by the economy. Now he isn’t sitting so pretty. Chris Mcosky is talking about trading Prince now, so minus Rasheed, Iverson, Mcdyess, Prince what 2 pieces can you bring in to compete for a title? Basically Joe D has sent us WAY back. Sad, but hey we got the Lions!!

Pride Of Detroit Detroit

We are 3 days away from the Draft, and I am drinking the Kool Aid today. Amped with Curry’s unselfishness, and every time I see the new Logo I love it more and more. The Red Wings dominated last night, can’t say enough about the Wings organization. The Tigers pitching looks solid, and I think they have a shot at the post season. Pistons, no comment.

But anyways, I love when I see all the negative Mel Kiper comments. And I was reading the USA Today sports section and they were commenting on the numbers differentiating the NFL Network and ESPN during Draft day. So with all the Kiper hate, I am hoping that we here at POD are going to be tuned into NFL Network. As I get older I have a growing resentment for the World Wide Leader.

I’ll be recording both in the ol’ DVR but I’ll be watching NFL Network. I guess they will be in 4 teams War Rooms, which is really cool. Does anyone know if FSN Detroit will have anything running?

Pride Of Detroit Doubt

Here we are 3 days away from what should be one of the most important days of the Detroit Lions in the past 10 years. Actually in my life time as a football fan, which is 17 years. I am a Aaron Curry-Oholic, obvious by my previous posts. But I am starting to get this paralyzing feeling of dread.

What if Matthew Stafford is a better version of Jay Cutler? What if Scott Linehan has the commitment/game plan to develop Stafford into a pro-bowl QB?

What if I am secretly starting to hope we draft Stafford, but I keep pulling for Curry. The damn Stafford hype machine has me all mixed up, fearful for the “potential” of Stafford, and fearful of passing on a Ray Lewis type leader of our defense for years to come.

Anyone know anything about the pre-draft presser the Lions are having today?

Pride Of Detroit Aaron Curry equals Lions Fandom Love!

Monday the Lions premiere the new Bubbles (should be a contest for who can make a new nickname for Bubbles) and the new uniforms. So, as a franchise there trying to sell new apparel to fans of a 0-16 team. How many posts has there been from POD members stating that they wont purchase any new gear until the Lions win a game. Come on, you know you can’t hold out. Ok back on track, so they are trying to sell jerseys of a 0-16 team. Does Lewand believe Stafford Jerseys will fly off the shelf? No, he was ranked 3rd in the fan poll. Smith? How many people buy offensive tackle jerseys? Wait; let me cover up my Gosder Cherilus, and Jeff Backus uniforms. George Foster? Still hanging in the closet. Curry jerseys would be sold out Saturday April 25th by 4:30pm. So not only would the “new” jerseys sell like hotcakes, he’s the Best player!! So, that is my conspiracy theory as to why Aaron Curry will make me a happy Lion in 8 days!!

Pride Of Detroit The Role Model

Wings Wrap up Franzen for 11 YEARS, for a salary cap number around 3.9 million per. The first 5 years he has a no trade clause, what a great deal. The Organization sacrifices, and he sacrifices for the betterment of the TEAM. Why cant the Lions be creative like this? Well the obvious reason is that the Wings started out like the Lion, and it took many winning season, Cups, and front office continuity.

So how did the Lions start their “new” regime? They promote within, and I am going to give them a period of time before I am critical of Mayhew. But hiring Shack Harris was plain stupid. Yes, Jacksonville is a successful franchise; but in the 6 years he was there only 3 of their 1st round picks have panned out. C’mon, we need a better example leading our green nosed GM.

I just marvel at the Wings Organization, and the commitment from the players, all the way to Mr. Illitch. Joe D took a Huge hit rep wise in my book, sacrificing a whole season for salary cap reasons for this summer and the next. Pull the Trade After the season. Don’t punish the fans for 78 games.

Your turn Martin Mayhew….

Pride Of Detroit Franchise Quarterback

I hate the Term Franchise Quarterback. Well, partly because the Lions haven’t had one in my lifetime. The Mel Kipers of the world throw the term around very loosely, and state that every year there is one. Repeatedly stating that a team needs to get this guy, or that guy; how many Franchise QB’s are there in the NFL right now? I count 11… Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Jay Cutler, Philip Rivers, Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers, Carson Palmer, Donavan Mcnabb, and Ben Roethlisberger. Solid starters who are either stop gaps, aging vets, journey men, or younger players making their way. 12… Joe Flacco, Tony Romo, Jake Delhomme, Marc Bulger, Trent Edwards, Kurt Warner, Chad Pennington, David Garrard, Matt Hasselbeck, and Matt Schaub, Kerry Collins, and Kyle Orton. That leaves 9 teams with below average QB’s on their teams. Yet the only ones that need QB help (in my opinion) in the draft are the Jets, Bucs, 49ers, and Lions? And of the 23 QB’s listed only 12 are 1st round picks, so why do we NEED to draft a QB this year? We don’t, what we need to do is either go

  1. Jason Smith
  2. Rey Maualuga
  3. Evander Hood

 OR

  1. Aaron Curry
  2. Eben Britton / Alex Mack
  3. Evander Hood

Serious needs would be addressed and the rebuilding would be in full swing. I know I stated before that a player with the last name Hood should not be considered for a city named Detroit (bad joke) but Hood is solid on multiple fronts. He is big 6’3 300lb, strong 34 reps (tied, for 5th in all participants) in the bench press at the combine. Good character, and drive. In all likelihood he wont be available. But I can dream. I am just praying that Matthew Stafford’s name isn’t called with the #1 pick. I don’t even want Cutler, We are not in a position for his skills to ultimately benefit us.

Pride Of Detroit Lions 09 QB

Chad Pennington, Sports Center just said that Miami wants the OTHER Chad under center for them next year. Basically giving Henne the starting job, I’m willing to bet for a 6th round pick we can acquire Pennington. He lead the turnaround in Miami this past year why not the D? He is a game management QB, what do the Lions need? He threw 19 touchdowns last year, and 7 INT’s, to no one. Imagine his numbers while throwing to CJ?

Pride Of Detroit Kickin Millen

Anyone think that Schwartz would love to stick his foot in Millens @SS for trading away the 2nd best DT in the league? Schwartz could have worked miracles with Shaun Rogers working on the DLine. But I’m sure there are a lot of moves that Schwartz is shaking his head over. I miss Rogers, he was the one positive I looked forward to while watching the Lions these past few years. #92 was always good for a chuckle, or a gasp. His TD against Denver is the only Lions highlight I have thoroughly enjoyed since Barry. Roy’s catches rank up there, but that’s not the first memory that comes to mind when I visualize Roy Williams. Roy will always be butterfingers to me. I am hoping we draft Curry, people are still enamored of Spielman because of his heart. I believe Curry can be that type of player. We don’t need a QB to be the face of our franchise. Baltimore has Ray Lewis, we can have Aaron Curry. QB’s are glamour boys, Detroit needs the face of the franchise to be gritty and hard working. I think passing on Curry will be another huge mistake.
