Bloody Elbow Why Do So Many MMA Fighters Get Injured So Often?

The news that Anthony Pettis is having surgery made me think about how often these guys get injured. Do you think they are just pushing their bodies too hard? Working on too many things that don't REALLY have much to do with fighting skills? Think about it... how many familiar fighters haven't missed time getting some kind of surgery? Seems like an awful lot of guys in their 20s and early 30s having their careers threatened.

I know these guys are training very hard and that intensity can lead to injuries, but maybe the workload is a bit much. Do they really need their fitness challenged every single day in order to succeed?

An active person in their prime shouldn't be getting way above fight weight anyway, so he should have a good fitness level already. Maybe spending more time on sparring (some light, some hard) as well as technical work, and taking it a bit easier on the aerobic side would mean the bodies are less stressed. Ballooning in weight between fights and trying to lose it quickly can lead to injuries as well.

Any ideas on this matter other than the understood "eh, they work hard and injuries and it comes with the territory"?

What do ya think?
