Julio Jones updates the AJC on his first workouts with the Falcons
Here are some of the big quotes:
He spent most of his time listening to the play call and then getting the details of the play from quarterback Matt Ryan or John Parker Wilson.
"They just told me to take it very slow," Jones said. "That’s what I’m going to do. I’m not coming out here to run full speed today. I’m going to jog a couple of routes and catch a couple of balls."
The team is expecting Jones to help provide some explosive plays on offense. After being drafted, he received a playbook and has been studying.
"The other day, Matt Ryan and John Parker Wilson, they looked over the book with me and told me what I needed to study as far as formations and what we use a lot," Jones said. "That’s what I’ve been doing. That’s the stuff that I’ve been mainly focusing on."
Before taking the field, Jones went around and introduced himself to the players.
"I wanted to come out here and shake these guys’ hands and put a face with a name," Jones said. "These guys have been great to me and we want to continue that."
Hypothetical Free Agency Heats Up: Chad Ochocinco To Falcons?
Most NFL commentators seem to agree that Chan Ochocinco is on the way out along with Carson Palmer now that Cincy has seemingly drafted their replacements. So where might this bull riding, soccer playing, reality tv host, 6 time Pro Bowler WR end up? Well our own D. Orlando Ledbetter thinks we could see him in a Falcons uniform in the near future.
A review of the Bucs' 10 arrests since Jan. 2010
Just another reminder why character (or a lack thereof) is so important in evaluating personnel. The most talented player in the world can't contribute if he's in jail or habitually suspended.
Owners planning NFL shutdown after court loss?
"We’re hearing initial rumblings pointing to the possibility that a loss by the league at the appellate level will prompt the owners to completely shut down all business operations until the players agree to a new labor deal. The thinking is that, if the owners cease all operations, the NFL would not be violating the court order because there would be no lockout. Instead, the league essentially would be going out of business..."
Just when you thought this lockout crap couldn't get any worse.
Thomas Dimitroff: Julio Jones has no "bust" potential
And neither does anyone else in the Falcon Organization apparently.
"We weren't looking at it thinking about risks; we weren't making a decision like this with Julio with the concern that this player would bust," Dimitroff said. "That was not even part of discussion, and everyone was part of this decision. Nobody in our organization feared bust or even mediocrity with Julio. It was never a concern. If there was a concern, it was more in line with, 'OK, how do we approach this? How do we get our heads around a two this year and, most importantly, the one next year.'
Follow the above link to read the full article along with the NFL Network's interview with Dimitroff from the Draft.
Pat Yasinskas: Julio Jones needs to add 'diva' touch
It's official: Yasinskas is an unqualified idiot. The idea that a WR has to have a me-first attitude and be team/self destructive to be successful in the NFL is laughable.
The "WR Diva" persona is a relatively new development brought to our collective consciousness by guys like Keyshawn Johnson and T.O. That label does not apply to many current and past greats like Larry Fitzgerald, Reggie Wayne, Hines Ward, Marvin Harrison, Art Monk, Don Hutson, or Jerry Rice just to name a few.
This smacks of lazy reporting, Pat. Competitiveness does not equate to selfishness. Humility does not equate to mediocrity.

Athletes, Osama bin Laden, and Twitter
Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall is one of the first (and likely not last) athletes to air his controversial opinions about the death of terrorists Osama bin Laden on Twitter.

How the anti-trust Tom Brady case could destroy football
I don't mean to sound dramatic but the stakes are really that high. While the heart of this labor dispute is how players and owners will split the 9 billion in annual profits, both sides have adopted strategies that lead to this business dispute being put into the American court system.
As such, both sides are now maneuvering for favorable (and binding) rulings in the Tom Brady case to increase their negotiating leverage.
Now I don't particularly back one side or the other but if the NFLPA's lawyer Jeffrey Kessler has his way and is successful in this case, then football as we've known it for the past 75+ years will end.
Falcons Sign GM Thomas Dimitroff to Multi-Year Extension
We all knew it was only a matter of time, but the Falcons have made sure that Thomas Dimitroff will be leading the team through the murky depths of Free Agency, the Draft, and all other personnel matters for the foreseeable future.
MAJOR Labor Development: Judge Doty stikes down Owners' lockout fund
In the eleventh hour of the NFL Labor dispute the situation has dramatically shifted. Up until this point the Owners essentially held all the power in the "negations" for a new CBA between themselves and the players making many believe that a new deal wouldn't be reached until the players were ready to make major concessions to the owners.
This advantage came from the reworked television contracts the Owners recently signed with their major television broadcast partners. Under those new deals, the Owners took less overall money for the ability to have their broadcast partners pay them even if there was no football in 2011. This payment would form the bulk of the Owner's lockout fund essentially allowing them to outlast the players while still paying their own bills in the event of a protracted labor dispute.
Now all that has changed.

Off-season Pipe Dreams: Should we sign Nnamdi Asomugha
Now let me go ahead and get the initial response every Falcon fan has out of the way - YES! FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY, YES!
With that done, follow the jump for an analysis of the Pros and Cons of bringing the former Raider to Atlanta.
Peter King: "no Free Agency" in 2011
While always entertaining, and occasionally controversial (he'll learn to love the Falcons one day), Peter King is about as plugged in to the movers, shakers, and decision makers of the NFL as it is possible for a member of the media to be. Which is why his latest MMQB prediction of a lack of Free Agency for this off-season is a bucket of ice water on the lap of the few shreds of optimism for a quick labor resolution that are out there.
Follow the jump for the quote.

Thomas Dimitroff talks Douglas, Sidbury and adding explosive players
Lawrence Sidbury and Harry Douglas had unfortunately quiet 2010 seasons which has led some fans to wonder about their long-term future with the Falcons. In a recent article GM Dimitroff revealed that the two young players are receiving the same calm, thoughtful patience that has come to define the current administration at Flowery Branch (occasionally to the consternation of us results hungry and impatient fans).

Update on Falcon's open-air stadium plans
A article in the Atlanta Business Chronicle recently gave some facts and figures regarding a new stadium for the Falcons versus renovating the Georgia Dome:
The future of Sam Baker - RT?
Today's NFL is defined by a single phrase: what have you done for me lately? Players don't get years to develop their craft like their forbears decades ago. They have to preform at a high level in short order especially if they play a marque position such as QB, RB, WR, or LT. Which forces us to ask some serious questions about our struggling 25 year old starting Left Tackle.
Mike Smith and Falcons hold Huddle for Children’s Miracle Network
Just a few days ago over 40 of our players and coaches devoted their time and considerable food service experience to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network. They managed to match the $200,000 raised in last year's event.
A winning season is good, a playoff run is great, a Superbowl victory is amazing, but having a team we can be proud of on and off the field is what makes being a fan worthwhile.

The value of character
As dedicated fans of a sports team, we all understand and share the desire for our team to win every Sunday. We buy their merchandise, purchase tickets to their games, and spend the entire off-season prognosticating on how to improve the team.
But, sometimes, winning comes at too high a price.

Potential Falcon - Albert Haynesworth?
Being that there isn't much to talk about between now and the upcoming draft, it might be fun to toss around some potential pre-draft trades. As many of you might know Big Al was offered to the Eagles in the McNabb-to-Washington trade. The Eagles passed but rumors persist that he's still available. So should the Falcons make a run at the troubled but talented DT?
How the Lions fleeced the Falcons - Last word on Chris Houston Trade
The details concerning the last minute alteration of the Chris Houston trade has come out. Initially we heard that the terms of the deal involved the Falcons receiving Detroit's sixth-round pick in the 2010 draft, along with a swap of fifth-round selections. Then the terms were altered with Atlanta only receiving Detroit's sixth-rounder this year and a conditional seventh-round pick next year.
According to PFT
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/25/lions-squeezed-falcons-into-taking-less-for-chris-houston/
"...the Lions contacted the Falcons and said that Houston could not pass the physical imposed by Lions' doctors. We're told that the Lions also said that perhaps Houston could pass the physical if the terms of the deal were adjusted.
And so the terms of the deal were adjusted, and Houston passed the physical.
Though the Falcons could have scrapped the trade and kept Chris Houston, they opted to process, and they probably will be reluctant to do a deal with Detroit the next time an opportunity to do so arises."
Thoughts?
Dunta Robinson now a Falcon
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/05/dunta-goes-home-to-georgia/
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Robinson and the Falcons have agreed to terms on a six-year deal.
William Moore done for the year
That ends the seasons for both of our first two picks of last year draft. Crap.

Falcons cut D.J. Shockley
According to profootballtalk.com:
"Quarterback D.J. Shockley, the one-time Georgia star who's been with the Falcons since 2006, has been released by the team, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
After toiling as the third QB in 2006, Shockley blew out his knee before the 2007 season and missed that year. He beat out Joey Harrington for the No. 3 spot last year but John Parker Wilson, an undrafted rookie from Alabama, beat Shockley out. Given the extended play Wilson got last Thursday when he was the second man in after starter Matt Ryan, Shockley's release was looming.
Atlanta needs to lop a dozen more players to get to 53."
