Austin High and Jones trail Westwood at halftime. Should be plenty of passes to #4 in the second half. Jones already with one great catch. Roger Wallace and Ahmad Brooks with the call.

(via KBVO-TV and kxan,com)

UPDATE: Cayleb finishes with 286 yds and a couple scores. Would have had even more yardage, but after a long catch and run, lateraled to his younger brother a few yards short of the endzone, giving his brother the score. Several incredible catches that you'll be able to replay via the Westwood video broadcast.

GM R.C. Buford at 2:24 mark in the video points out that the Spurs draft was built around getting Joseph with 29th pick.

This allowed the Spurs to trade beloved guard George Hill to his hometown Pacers for the 15th overall pick. If Spurs told Joseph of their plan in advance, this would help explain why Joesph was willing to keep his name in the draft. Give Alexis Wangmene the rare assist.

Burnt Orange Nation @sherrodharris tests fans' character (limit)

Former Longhorn back-up QB Sherrod Harris (@sherrodharris) treated his 1700+ Twitter followers to a story yesterday...

Was talking to a guy about football. Long story short, he tried to argue me down about MY career. I was like "I don't think that happened."

Tearing his stories to pieces and he kept saying he had a person close to Sherrod. I was like "Damn, how close?" He said "horses mouth." LOL

I said "I'm a good friend of Sherrod's I've heard damn near most things about his life. Our parents are cool & I've known him since birth."

He just kept going... So I kept listening? Apparently, I've been married and his friend was at the wedding. That's the funniest one.

So outta nowhere he starts bashing me. I started cracking up. "He was awful, I used to go to practice with my friend and he was terrible."

I started laughing. He was like, I don't mean to bash your friend. I said "he'll be alright. Not like I'm going to tell him."

So I ask him... "Could Sherrod have played another position?" This man said, "of course, he has quick feet... Not smart enough to play qb."

I'm cracking up. Trying to give dude the benefit of the doubt so I'm like "Can I buy you a drink?" A lemonade? Wait, you're not drinking? Ha

Then he starts hitting me about my personality... "I heard he's a terrible person. Thinks he's better than folks. Left his team hanging..."

So he's like "yeah, they said he's a bad locker room guy." I'm dying now. Damn near crying. I'm egging him on too. Hard. Want to hear more.

He's bashing other cats from the teams in the past and especially last year & keeps getting it going on me and asks his friend to come over.

So I'm eating my nachos soooo hard and dude comes over and is trying to figure out what we're talking about. I was "Longhorn Football."

So his friend comes over and starts going hard about black qb's!!! I'm like Got Damn!!! Wow. Cam, Jerrod, Me, Jay Chiles, Pryor, and Taylor.

I'm thinking "so tell me what you really think about us." LOL I ask him about Vince and he says... "Well, he's different." I was like ok.

That ran me a little hot, but I kept that smile. I'm thinking "do ya'll realize I'll put my hands on ya'll. I am black, fellas."

Finish my nachos. Order another lemonade and ask them if they're sure they haven't been drinking cause I'll get them one. "Nah, we're ok."

So we start talking football concepts. Blocking schemes, route patters, what to through against certain coverages and shit.

He's talking cover 2, man, cover 3, cover 4 and cover 6. I'm like, I haven't played since HS (fact LOL)... Then drew plays for each coverage

I explain why each play would work. They are completely mind fucked now. Like wow. Why did you know that? "I play a lot of video games."

Ok, so they want to go deeper... Blitz pick ups, hot routes, check downs, "sideline screens" (ha ha ha), audibles. I'm like cool.

I'm like ummmm... Ok, they draw a couple blitzes. I name them for 'em. Tell them what would pick 'em up or what you have to do to get out.

They start celebrating and shit. I'm like "WTF." I'm thinking they have to be high on something. Nope. Asking how I know so much. LOL

I'm like video games and HS. They tell me they record the UT games and Cowboys games and understand all the offenses/defenses.

So jokingly I say "So, ya'll can pretty much do what Jason Garrett or Greg Davis does, probably better?" These muh fuggas say "hell yeah."

I'm crying now. I swear tears came out of my eyes, my stomach starting hurting. I'm like do ya'll coach? Pee Wee? Wait, what? Bahahahaha

So I'm trying to pay, and I keep missing the bartender/waiter because they keep speaking and I keep looking at them and he walks by.

So, they start asking about Sherrod's and mine relationship (#Pause) and the last time I spoke to him I was like... "We spoke this morning."

He's like "I'm so glad he never played. It would have been terrible. You thought the K-State game was bad for Gilbert. Whew!!" Wow.

I'm like yeah, we would have surely lost if he would have had a day worse than that. "Do you think he would have completed a pass?"

He couldn't hit the side of a barn. I was like "How big would the barn have been though? Like a real barn?" Figure of speech I guess!"

I know the bartender/waiter and I'm like can I get the check. Dude tells me I'm a really nice guy. I'm like thanks man.

So a little kid comes up to me and is like "Hey, just wanted to come and tell you I follow you on twitter. Can I get an autograph?" LOL

I'm thinking only today would this happen. So I'm like of course. Sign a napkin and the guys are looking at me all funny. So "who are you?"

"I'm just on this thing called Twitter. I do a bunch of random thoughts on there. A couple kids follow me. It's cool. Something fun."

So bartender comes back and he's like I appreciate ya Rod. See you soon? I'm like, yeah I'll be back fam. Holla at you later.

I turn to walk away and the lil' kid, Marcus, brought his parents over and they are like "Thanks Sherrod. We appreciate it...

They gone on like "we wish you would have gotten a shot. We've watched you since you were at Bowie." I'm like thank you. *finger over mouth*

So I point at the guys and the family gives me a hug and wishes me the best. The guys are looking at me all sorts of weird. I hug Marcus.

I'm like alright guys nice to meet you. I'm like you too. One of the dudes is like, "you're on twitter right?" I'm like yeah...

So he's like we're both on twitter my name is Chris and this is my friend Steve, we'll follow you bro, what's your twitter name?

I bust out laughing. I'm fawking dying now. I sit back down ask the bartender to shoot me a pen real quick, grab a napkin, scribble the name

Slammed that hoe on the counter like I just got 35 on the domino table!!! My hand still burns. Oooooooooooweeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!

Was like "This was such an entertaining conversation guys. Enjoy your drinks" then patted them on the back and walked off. Bahahahahahaha

So I'm outside and these two crazy men chase me down and apologize to me for damn near 20 mins? I'm WAS NOT having it though. Not at all.

I came to the crib and had to tell ya'll. My roommates were gone so I had to tweet it. There's a moral to the story but I don't know it yet.

I don't think people are understanding how hard I slammed it on the counter. Do you realize how hard it is to get 35 in dominoes? Golleee!!!

Sings the Horns' praises in the above video. (Since FSN has contracts with the Big 12, you're not going to see any "hard reporting" or negative reports on member institutions unless there is just an unavoidable story with clear facts. I'll assume Evans has been told his role is more that of positive PR in these videos.)

Not only has Nebraska chosen to sever a century long tie to Kansas and abandon other rivalries, now the Big Red have essentially split Ohio State and Michigan.

Looking at the divisions, Nebraska is transitioning from a weak Big 12 North to a weak Big Ten fluff division for the next few years.

• Nebraska, Michigan, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern and Minnesota comprise one division

• Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Indiana and Illinois the other.

Burnt Orange Nation Vince vs. Leinart: MNF Open Thread

Will VY win or will the better team win?

Titans vs. Cardinals in preseason action.  Both starters should see multiple drives in first half.

VY is a two-time Pro Bowler and 26-13 as a starter.  Leinart is taking the reins back from Kurt Warner, trying to establish himself as the starter.

First play of the game...a completion to Bo Scaife.

(Several other Horns like Michael Griffin, Ahmard Hall, and Chris Simms also involved for the Titans.  Lyle Sendlein with the Cardinals.)

Last time these teams met, Vince led this 99-yard game winning drive:

Burnt Orange Nation HOF Game - Game Thread (Plus: Shipley Video)

Jordan Shipley returns punt 64 yards in rookie debut for Bengals against Cowboys in HOF game (via shipleyplaysguitar)

Football.  Finally.

The game features 5 of the finest members of the Longhorns offense in recent memory.  (i.e. 5 reasons Greg Davis makes a comfortable living.)

Jordan Shipley, Quan Cosby and Cedric Benson on the Bengals versus Leonard Davis and Roy Williams on the Cowboys.  Roddrick Muckelroy is also a rookie for the Bengals

Starters will likely only be in for first quarter, but Jordan and Quan may see some snaps later in the game and perhaps returning kicks.

Sit back and enjoy.

Uniform #s:

Shipley - 11
Cosby - 12
Benson -32
Muckelroy - 56

Davis - 70
Williams - 11

Burnt Orange Nation If BON ever sponsored something...

This would be my suggestion (specifically the section currently sponsored by Rudy's BBQ) [LINK]
.

The idea came to me in April during the NFL Draft.  I got bored and ventured over to the site to see how the masses would respond to things that included West Texas A&M having just as many selections (a former Longhorn, no less), and Mack Brown being on the NFL Network's coverage and calling out Colt McCoy's name (aka "Cart McCoy").

Wouldn't you enjoy knowing that Texas A&M football fan commentary was made possible in part by BON's sponsorship?  Every time the football forum (which is approaching 4 million posts) is accessed, there would be an attractive BON logo to greet them.  Just our way of saying thank you for the non-stop free entertainment and quality reads (for those of us who can read at least at a tu level).  Much like their fight song, half of the content is about UT anyway.  The front page of the forum displays 35 topics.  On draft night, there were more topics about the Longhorns than the Aggies.

Today with Mack Brown on ESPN Radio (Van Pelt) and ESPN (Sports Center, Sports Nation, & College Football Live), the forums are not disappointing.

I will make clear that anytime I see something in those forums that I can easily debunk with what are known as "facts" and "evidence," I restrain myself from doing so, and hope you will do the same.  It's better not to introduce foreign substances in to the natural habitat and risk irreparably changing it.  Besides, if you sit back and wait patiently, a level-headed member of the community will try to appeal to the masses to drink a little less kool-aid, and in return the sensible Aggie will inevitably be berated and piled upon by the maroon masses.  You feel horrible for the guy, but it's science.

I don't advocate trolling, but do recommend taking the occasional peek.  Especially if you've ever wondered the precise path A&M will take to an inevitable conference title, or how much better their QB is than UT's, or which school was founded first, or even the latest on our head coach's dental hygiene.

Just Sayin'...

Burnt Orange Nation 2010 NBA Draft Thread

UPDATE: Bradley goes to Celtics at 19.  James to Atlanta at 24 (then traded to Nets).  Big 12 dominating with first round selections from KU (2), UT (2), BU, OSU, & ISU.

UPDATE #2: While other Horns slipped slightly, Pittman jumps to the second pick in round 2.  Joins a Miami Heat team that should be a big player in free agency.

As many as three Longhorns could be picked...or as few as zero (but not fewer).  Damion James has been often predicted to go to the Spurs at 20.  Avery Bradley has been considered anywhere between the late Lottery to second rounder.  And many wonder if Dexter Pittman could continue to make leaps in his game as he did in Austin...

John Wall goes No. 1 to Washington.

Now that a Wimbledon match has produced a higher score than most WNBA games, feel free to spend your downtime here...

Burnt Orange Nation Longhorns' Football Legacy in Big 12 (The Numbers)

Since its inception, the Big 12 has really proven to be the Big 2.  The past 14 seasons have belonged almost entirely to South Division teams Texas and Oklahoma (while many in 1996 perhaps would have predicted the league would be dominated by the North's Nebraska and Colorado).

I'll try to keep this to ten bullet points, but if there happens to be an eleventh, let's still think of it as the traditional ten.

  • In 1996, who would have believed Texas would go 8-1 vs. Nebraska?  (6-0 regular season and 2-1 in conference championships.)  Obviously it was a nice 1-0 start to the series, but the chant "37-27" has since been replaced by "41-38."  As good as the Big 12 has been to Texas, it has been equally bad for Nebraska, despite a weak division.  Remember when Nebraska's standards dictated that their coach be fired after a 9-win season?  In 1996, who would have believed the Huskers would panic and ditch the run for a West Coast system?  Rarely have the breaks gone NU's way.  While the series vs Texas was lopsided in the Win-Loss column, the average score of 23-19 in those games was much closer as the Longhorns won some nail-biters.  The last meeting certainly was no different.

Chad Ford projects Damion James to Spurs at 20 and Avery Bradley to Grizzlies (from Lakers) at 25 if he slips from a late lottery pick.

Both are considered 1st rounders because of hustle and defense, even though neither is locked into a specific position on offense.

Burnt Orange Nation Remembering the Alamo Bowl

So what did we learn?

1) This year's Alamo Bowl broadcast was over four hours long.  Yes, you read that that right...Adam James was locked inside the Alamo Dome for over four hours.  And apparently 66,000 people were on hand to make sure he didn't leave.

2a) ESPN is the worldwide leader in sports, so appropriately they employ the worldwide expert on concussions.  Mike Patrick asserted as fact that Mike Leach punished Adam James because James had a concussion.  Apparently when Leach was a child, his first puppy was run over by a concussion.

2b) Mike Patrick then used Mike Leach's isolation of Adam James as a segue to coaches nowadays forcing concussed players to return to action too soon and risking the player's health.

2c) In the second half Mike Patrick saw Taylor Potts jog at a brisk pace to the locker room alone and minutes later jog back out to the sidelines.  Patrick wisely concluded Potts may have a concussion.  Don't question the man.  After all, he was the only broadcaster bold enough last week to assert that Oregon's Masoli was overlooked for the "Theismann" Trophy.

3) Due to the Liberty bowl going to overtime, the opening minutes of the Alamo Bowl aired on ESPN Classic.  It was disclosed to the significantly reduced viewership at the top of the broadcast that Craig James was originally scheduled to serve as analyst alongside Mike Patrick for the Alamo Bowl, but was replaced this week by Bob Davey.

Burnt Orange Nation Do not wish VY to be a Texan

Expect Merrill Hodge to call in sick tomorrow.

For those who watched MNF, there were so many moments that made Longhorn fans smile.  You were reminded why the CBS affiliate in Austin used to choose to air Titans games rather than Texans games when given the choice.  Who knows if Vince will ever be in a Super Bowl, but we do know that every time he plays the Texans IN HOUSTON, that might as well be his Super Bowl.  The icing on the cake tonight was to see the other Longhorns perform well and seemingly elevate their games and feed off of Vince.  (How did UT send a FULLBACK to the NFL again?)  ESPN's closing shot was VY hugging Studdard (a Texan) at midfield.

I'm happy to root for the Texans 14 games per season.  Tonight after the game I was curious how the SB Nation blogs for the Titans (musiccitymiracles.com) and the Texans (battleredblog.com) were reacting to the outcome.  It amazed me how many members on the Texans blog spoke negatively of VY and when comparing the two blogs, MCM mirrored BON in a way, in that their equivalent of Peter reached out to the Texans blog earlier this week, offering to answer any questions they may have about all things Titans this season.  I feel sorry for any BON members who are diehard Texans fans, because the SB Nation blog available to you (BRB) is a pretty poor option.  BRB mirrors more of an Aggie approach.  The thread which began as an olive branch of sorts was capped off with this Texans fan's statement:

Do you find...

the symmetry between what the Texans can do to the Titans’ season and what Steve McNair’s girlfriend did to his nap frighteningly similar?

Yay, sports.

Be thankful for what we have here at BON.  And that VY is not a Texan.

There's plenty more.  Here's the whole thread:

Burnt Orange Nation Colt to God- "Find a new roommate"

Colt McCoy added a possible Heisman highlight to his resume Saturday against rival Oklahoma.  Late in the first half, trailing 6-3, McCoy and the Longhorns looked to capitalize off a Sooners special teams miscue, giving Texas the ball in Crimson and Cream territory with a little over three minutes to go before halftime.   Showing a flash of what had helped earn him a trip to New York City one season before, McCoy weaved his way through defenders, traversing 27 yards.  But as he fought for the final yardage and began his descent toward the turf, the ball appeared to be stripped loose and recovered by Oklahoma.

McCoy and the Texas offense remained on the field and remained hopeful as replay officials reviewed the play. The video confirmed the call on the field.  Another turnover.  The Sooner lead was still intact.  The Texas quarterback made his way to the sidelines but just prior to stepping off the field, he had one more message to give.  Not to his teammates.  Not to the coaching staff.  Nor to the opponents.   With his helmet in hand, McCoy paused and then looked up to the heavens as he has done before.  The difference this time?  A stern-faced McCoy had a message for God.

Coltscorns_medium

Those who have followed McCoy over the years will make the educated guess that the senior signal caller's message to the heavens pertained to recognizing that this was another challenge that he would ultimately answer and grow stronger from.  But for the rest of us who don't read lips, we can speculate that perhaps this was something else.  While his run would not be his defining Heisman moment, perhaps his skyward message was.

In 2008, Tim Tebow was praised for making  "the promise."  Days prior to Saturday's game at the State Fair, a developing storyline was that while McCoy and Sam Bradford enjoy a close relationship, the same could not be said for McCoy and the country's slightly more famous God-fearing dual-threat.  With 2:17 remaining in the first half, McCoy gave his own statement to an audience of one.

It's long been speculated that when McCoy enters the NFL, he'll have an even bigger platform to spread the Word of God, and there would be no better and effective way of doing so than having God move in with him as roommates.  (Colt would pay most the bills, but God apparently said he'd handle the water.)  These past few years it has been realized there is no better way to get media exposure than to be the literal roommate of McCoy.  With Jordan Shipley out of town, Colt and God had a trial run as co-tenants sharing a room, but the relationship was strained as God mistakenly packed his Tim Tebow pajamas.  Saturday's fumble appeared to be the final straw, as the quarterback muttered a few words before stepping off the field.  God, having already given his 30-days written notice, had no choice but to help guide the Longhorns on 13-7 second half run.

In lieu of a plaque, it will be written in stone.

Fiesta Bowl win over Ohio State can now be watched on Hulu.

Here is the complete game. In case this has not been mentioned, Hulu now has some Fiesta Bowls available to watch, including the 2009 win over Ohio St. and also the 2007 game between OU and Boise State. I forget how that turned out.

Burnt Orange Nation Scandal: McCoy sleeping with the enemy.

I know this doesn't get much publicity, so incase you don't know, Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley are roommates.  Well, burried in today's updated ESPN.com story on Sam Bradford's injury is the fact that McCoy was shacking up with Bradford this summer.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4452318

"Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy, who finished second to Bradford in the Heisman Trophy balloting last year, said Monday he sent Bradford a get-well text message. The two became friends during the Heisman festivities last December and then while rooming together at the Manning Camp for high school players over the summer."

(Until now, I believe Shipley was under the impression that McCoy was either just on a cruise with the McCoy family or at a lot of funerals this summer.)

Burnt Orange Nation ALL charges against Benson dropped.

Statesman reports that BOTH of the grand juries (one dealing with the boating charge, the other with the driving charge) have found a lack of evidence against Cedric, leaving prosecutors with no choice to but to drop both cases.

For those not familiar with the legal process, this says a great deal about the weakness of the cases brought against Cedric (and perhaps speaks as much to how law enforcement handled the two incidents).  A grand jury is a pre-trial stage.  (Not to be confused with an actual jury that would sit during a trial and offer a final verdict.)  It is often joked that a prosecutor could get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich of wrong doing...it is just that easy to show probable cause and move forward to a trial. In both instances involving Cedric, the prosecution failed to establish this otherwise basic step.

http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/longhorns/entries/2008/09/25/benson_charges.html

This may open a few more doors for Cedric.

With regards to other Horns receiving some rare positive press,  ESPN has added two more items to the Vince Young saga with a little less negative light.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?page=hotread2/merrill

and

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3608511

And of course that third Longhorn who baffles the press (Ricky Williams), rushed for just shy of 100 yards against the Patriots last week but was overshadowed by Ronnie Brown's break out.

Burnt Orange Nation Texas 57, OU 39

In sad news that went unnoticed this past year, the OU community lost a friend as the Hartman Football Newsletter can no longer be found online.  HFN held itself out to be "America's Leading Authority on Football" dating all the way back to the publication's inception in 1994.  To be the leading authority of football is impressive stuff.  But 1994?  I'd understand maybe if someone who covers and writes about curling since 1994 claimed to be the leading authority, but football?  That can't be right.  Every year since BON's inception (circa 2005), I have reposted a few minor corrections that the HFN editor managed to overlook.

Burnt Orange Nation April, the Month of Apologies...

Imus said it.  Mike Nifong kind of said it.  This has been the month of individuals making national appologies subsequent to being under scrutiny for their comments.  Well, this also happens to be the month in which the NFL Draft will be taking place, so let's look at one more person who may want to appologize.

It was one year ago at this time that Vince Young was being placed under a microscope and his draft status debated by the masses.  Columnist Jason Whitlock perhaps had the most to say in a rant published on ESPN.com's Page 2.  Whitlock has since been informed by ESPN that his services are no longer needed (though without the hubub Imus' departure received).  Looking back at the piece, perhaps it is time Whitlock said "I'm sorry."

Burnt Orange Nation OU's Glass House

Before actually moving on to the fact that Texas plays Baylor this week (and not OU again), I fear history continues to repeat itself every October when the delightful verbal exchange heats up with those slightly North of us who failed to be included on our friends and family calling plans.  Last February, Peter posted a one-word story (six including the title) regarding certain anatomical envy. The post links to a webpage assembled by the Hartman Football Newsletter.  HFN holds itself out to be "America's Leading Authority on Football" dating back all the way back to the publication's inception in 1994.  To be the leading authority of football is impressive stuff.  But 1994?  I'd understand maybe if someone who covers and writes about curling since 1994 claimed to be the leading authority, but football?  That can't be right.
