There's a balance in football between "old school", slug them in the nose and keep going, and the "mastermind" school that is not so much about trick plays as being able to counterpunch with such timing that the opponent is constantly caught slightly off guard or on his heels.

I think the best Offense is a blend of timing and strength And innovation. Every week you are on display with last week's game being scrutinized by this weeks opponent. So it only seems fitting that you employ some kind of logic to all the moving and movable pieces of your attack.

Let's start with the OFFENSIVE LINE. These guys are asked to drive block, pull, slant, zone block, drop back to pass protect, pick up blitz, set up moving pockets and screens. Lots of moving parts. Any coach people considers to be good does 2 things better than lesser folks: 1st he accesses what each player can do and their level of strenghts (ie-Flozell is poor against speed rushers so a good coach should have him run block the guy first to take away his burst and to keep him within arm's reach, then shuffle step back into normal pass protect). 2nd- he motivates them to a higher plain, gives them hope and vision and finds the way to get them going that direction to fulfill their full ability and raise their skill. So... are the coaches accessing team and individual strengths and adapting the schemes and players to fit what is needed on the field. Obviously NO. Or is it that the players have gone soft? I mean we do have one of the biggest O-lines in the NFL and we can't run, can hardly pass protect.... so either we stick with the old ideas that aren't working (that we can do anything and everything in the playbook) or we formulate a smaller more precise plan based on strengths and innovative schemes (ie-See Miami's Wildcat formations as Innovation that refuses to sit idly by and accept the status quo, defeats)

Scheme: Variations on normal cause defenses issues granting the innovators momentary advantage. Example would be to a fast ball pitcher throwing a change up.... start out 3 step drop, 3 step, 3 step, run, then 7 step. Sprint right the pocket. Better yet sprint left the pocket and throw to the backfield to one our two receiver quarterbacks for a halfback option pass. NOW movement has befuddled the defense and they can either sit back to see what is next or decide to attack. Scheme wins because it breaks up the norm. The norm has been to do the same old thing (AA's definition of Crazy is to do the same thing and expect a different outcome.) We have 2 very different backs, Power and Speed. Who would you rather face? Why not make defenses choose? Scheme a trips right with Felix as the offset back behind two wide receivers and on the other side Witten and Marion! So if the defense blitzes they are short one extra guy and either side is off to the races with blockers ahead.....or the play becomes a pass play instead of a running play in a pass formation and now you have the defense again because they have crowded up close and must chase more in Man to Man!!! Imagine the running lane when all the Linebackers open the middle because they are being forced to cover this scheme...Romo for 20yd. then throw in a reverse or halfback pass.Etc. Etc. Etc folks!!! . For Running plays why not pick a side of the Offensive line and seal the edge and keep pushing it there. Felix's speed to the edge or Marion's power out over Right Tackle with Witten cracking in from his split.

Hammer, hammer, hammer, switchup. To test a rock's strength you hit One area repeatedly not every spot on the rock. When they start to shift coverage or slant men then stretch the field. Come back to it in a bubble screen and next fake a bubble (like New England does so well) and throw back to the other side. Get the defense breathing hard and starting to question....then piece by piece systematically pick them apart. A boxer doesn't dictate by taking blows but by giving them. Likewise if he faces a stronger or quicker tactician he himself must find one or possibly two areas to apply his strength until he has neutralized his disadvantage then, and only then, can he begin to open his aresenal! That is scheme and it is not random and it is not luck and to start with it often looks ugly....but what matters is that it works to soften the opponent so that the ultimate goal is reached.

And if our coaching staff can't see that or do that then we have outgrown them. And I personally want a coach with a little fire in his tank. This is a contact sport where men have to play hurt and momemtum can shift easily. Passion keeps pushing (look at Steve Spagnuolo and how the Gmen's defense get fired up).

Owens T G C G T Roy Witten

Marion Romo Felix

--------------------------------------OR-----------------------------------------------

TO Roy T G C G T Felix Witten Crayton Romo

______Imagine Crayton dropping back with Pass, Reverse or Run Options!!!

Do the same with Isaiah Stanback instead of Crayton....

BUT we are not thinking to Use or Deploy our Weapons........Why

Wildcat

We have problems galore, but do you actually see work being done?

Several folks, like Emmitt, have said there is no "real" leadership. And when I think of it who do you sense you would follow either on our coaching staff or as a player? Don't say Ware cause he is quiet and his own man, not a demanding vocal leader pushing and pulling the players. James might be close, but just watch the field and see if he rallies them or if they flow to him looking for leadership.

As for the coaches, well I see no one. It is year two of the Red Headed Genius's time and he's fooling NO ONE. Might be too that coaches left for Miami who were getting that Offensive Line to play like NFL players, cause they sure stink it up now. And mentioning Miami, they were given the 32nd spot on all polls and yet have not hung their head, instead they said, "okay if we can't beat you with a normal attack we will wildcat you." SO I ask, Why Don't We Wildcat it???

We sucked against Arizona and again against the Giants. Did anyone expect that our backup Qb's would have a good day against that pass rush??? So why not try something they have not seen? Why not at least try something different? What, were we trying to see just how bad we were? --So why not try??? And if we didn't try something new just exactly why was that?

We have two guys with tons of experience in handling the ball who could do some wildcat, Patrick Crayton and Isaiah Stanback. Both were quarterbacks with good enough arms and both have some moves. But really the point is WHY not try something different? How many weeks of playing poorly do we have to have to convince us we have to try something unique and or different?

The facts are that more than anything else the Offensive Line is playing Offensively! Fix that alone and we are fine!!!! That ALONE and we might return to great! So if we can't fix it (as it so appears and the last 4 weeks are proof) then why on earth keep doing the same thing expecting a different result? (Romo will help but his injury came because our Line let them through and it will happen AGAIN if we refuse to see that and either motivate the players or change up gameplans and maybe wild cat some stuff)

The defense has done pretty well. They have not been our problem, although getting to the Qb more frequently would help tremendously. But still, Wade was brought in to "fix" them, do you see the improvement?

So without real and outstanding leadership (the vocal leader types that are magnets to all the team's actions), be that players or coaches, I personally think the time is coming for a change. We have the players, so it seems the coaches who are suppose to coach up And motivate the players, they are where we start because, and follow the logic, if we had 13 Pro Bowlers last year and we are now last in the Division it probably isn't just the players' fault and obviously other teams are out scheming and out playing us....therefore it must be the coaching that is lacking (cause everyone says we are loaded with talent, so where are the results)!

Let's watch the rest of the season and then take a run at a guy we know has motivated his players And a guy who knows two of the NFC East teams intimately, Steve Spagnuolo. He's a motivator, he gets Results!!!, he is obviously smart, he takes it to other teams instead of being dictated to like we seem to coach. I love Garrett but has he flexed the Offense to hide or fix our glaring problems? Has he flexed with the need at all? And does anyone else not find it really off that we have two Pro Bowl receivers and they might as well not even be on the team for all the impact they effect on the field when we play?? If not then broaden that out to the bigger picture and imagine him as the Head Coach of the entire team. That is an oversight and managing of people position, so if you don't see craftiness and shifting ability on the lower level to fix or adjust your people then amping that up to the Head Coach just doesn't seem logical.

I know it could be that "the grass is always greener" syndrome but if nothing else you swipe the G-men's master mind on defense (just as they did to the Eagles) and in one stroke you are familiar with 2 of your closest rivals by having a guy who coached for and motivated them. So you rob their defense and promote the guy and let's see what he can do. Wade is a nice guy but I'm not sold that nice will do it. Yeah, last year the players loved being out from under the oppressiveness of Big Bill, but now what are we seeing? The picture being draw for us by our play says it is time for a change.

Here in Dallas we've had our fair share of run in's with the law, and we've had our fair share of "characters" who the Press loves to hate, but there's very few time we ever get a character that the Press doesn't go off on.....so my question is

Why does Plaxico Burress get off the hook???

Two Police recorded activities at his home for violence oriented behavior, his own club has suspended him Twice, and the Steelers let him leave in free agency because they saw his as trouble. So tell me why Kevin Winslow is getting brow beat by the press and Plax is able to ride the waves above it? At what point can we begin to count on these guys to do their job and go jump in his face and ride his case like they have Randy Moss, TO and Steve Smith (opps, he has had several altercations too and the press still lines his bed with feathers)???

Why wont the Press, the Reporters jump on the Giants like they do so many others? I mean everybody know Branden Jacobs starts stuff EVERY WEEK and yet no one rides his as a dirty player. It is the grace period from last year that Plax was so injured and still played each week that has kept him above reproach? Or was he just lazy and not wanting to practice (cause he looked darn good in all those games, not a limp, not a loss of stride or step!) and everyone over looked it cause Jeremy Shocky was the dumping boy?

What do you think? Are the G-men getting a pass on being pulled apart for every little thing (like we are) or am I missing something? (Seems since they are from NY with all that Press around that they would be the center of scrutiny)

When does 2 weeks determine our season? What makes these past two weeks feel so bleak?

I watched the last two weeks and feel as frustrated as every Cowboy fan. I hear the questions of the media, the spin of Wade and the frustration of the players, and wonder where the mismatch and disconnect is?

And then it occured to me, there are two over laying issues. The first is our history, and if you listen to the media it has been 80 years since our last playoff victory (suggesting that only the season at the end of the season has merit...tell that to a guy who blows his knee our in week 11). And yet there is a dark shadow hanging over my head because I am a "God I love the Cowboys" fan, and that is that for a fist full of years we get to December and fall apart and the playoffs are only a continuation of a trend I don't know how to fix or see that our staff has enough of a handle on to prevent from happening any time soon. And thus the upcoming playoffs feel like they might be more of the same unless Something changes (but I am clueless as to what makes us wake up and claim December victories).

The second issue is the current history closely being shadowed by our end of season history of our recent past. Last year we had a divisional foe who we beat by outscoring them...much like we did with our first divisional foe this year, the Eagles. But then we started looking more and more consistent and it was obvious we were becoming machine like in our abilities, stumbling only to the Patriot's machine. Towards the end of the year not only did we faulter but the Skins rose up and would have been a bear to beat in the playoffs. Put last year where we grew stronger (until December) next to this year (so far) and we see a side by side comparison between us and those hated Skins, and yet they are the ones looking stronger and progressing while if feels like we are fluttering around. --(I know it has Only been a couple of weeks but the graph inside my stomach is a feeling kind of thing that only the certainty of our team's strength and resourcefulness can make turn towards the positive....which happens by showing consistency in play and growth in the various units--offense, defense and special teams.)

We have started strong then faulter. The skins have taken a few shots then gotten up and started their dominance. We spring leaks on special teams and defense and our offense sputters. Theirs, while not perfect, marches on...and all the while in my head I know we have to first win our Division! We can't hope for a second or third place finish, so doing poorly against other non-divisional opponents must assure me we are getting stronger in preparation for the wars that are to come.

Their Qb is showing more consistency (offensive line please take note). Their defense is making things happen. They look like an engine, we look somewhat lucky. And so we see the Skins pull ahead in the progression towards looking like they are getting it all together while we are relying on pieces (TO, Felix, Barber, Romo) that sometimes work and sometimes don't. It seems like disrupting one should cost the opponent's defense causing it to be stread thin and making it susceptable to our other weapons....but that does not seem to be working. Maybe it is because Hurd, Miles and Crayton have become invisible men (with the lone exception being the tip ball drill that netted Crayton a touchdown....and who believes luck is better than skill on a consistent basis).

So the shadow of seasons past casts a worried pall over the struggles of the present, reminding us that history does have a cyclical nature....and yet we won the ballgame. Maybe we weren't convincing, but we won. And the players seem to be saying, "isn't that enough, heck it's hard to win in the NFL and yet we find a way." While inside my gut keeps asking, "yeah but is 'finding' a way good enough when we need you to be a machine that is systematic and powerful, predicatable and sure (like the 90's Cowboy teams)?" And I think that is why "just winning" does not feel good enough to allay my December memory.

Our first pass against Greenbay was incomplete, but why? Twenty seven times their 12th man interceded, some small some large, but 27 times. So I ask you, beyond the noise of having your home crowd, shouldn't all the other aspects be fair?

Shouldn't there be a standard for things that ensure equal playing fields???

Then go back and watch the game and ask yourself about everyone of the plays where our guys (12 to1) took a slip (and sometimes a fall, like their interception in our endzone and Miles slips and lays out trying to tackle their guy) on that turf. For example, TO falls down and does not catch the first pass of the game leaving us with second and long. Then third and long TO catches that same 8 yard pass he couldn't catch because he was falling down due to slipping on the loose turf and now instead of 4th down it is a first down and we are moving the chains and the ball instead of punting. Go back and watch

Another one all of us noticed was a Very advantageous slip on their part (one of very few) when Aaron Rodgers rolled out of the pocket went to set his feet and took a seat on the turf....well if he had not fallen Anthony Henry would have gotten the only clean shot on him that he would have gotten all night. And how would that have effected the game (fumble, injury?), since no one has seen Rodgers take a shot yet.?

Jump back to '94 and that sorry field in Candlestick park and turning the ball over 3 times for 21 points in the first 5 minutes of the game with the 49ers. Watch our guys slide and then the ball gets punched out as they are concentrating on their footing. WHY is that fair? Same with that lousy field in Pittsburg in the end of the season when they let every High School and College team in PA play on it and stomp it into mud. Suddenly every teams' million dollar players are slipping and sliding and risking their careers. Heck the Steelers almooost lost to the winless Dolphins last year in the muddy madness of that useless bunch of muck! The same goes for those sorry Eagle's until they moved to the new stadium. Remember that nasty shag rug they called Astro turf that was a quarter of an inch of rug-burn over the top of four feet of hard concrete?!! Who can forget Michael Irvin after his contact with that "field"!

Why is this allowed to go on? Isn't it obvious when the ground's crews have to spray green paint on the dirt or mud just to fool everyone watching on TV into believing it is a nice field? And any field where big chunks come flying out means that it (the grass) is not doing the job it is there for (because there are a number of grass fields in the NFL that do just fine...but not cold weather grass fields or fields that get used like Grand Central Station, especially when you throw in rain).

It is one thing to battle the elements of a winter storm or high and swirling winds in the Meadowlands, that is Mother Nature, but to have that Compounded by footing that is so sub-standard that it hinders the game and puts people at risk and or gives one team an advantage...well is that fair? And if it is then shouldn't we be thinking of a way to "Belichek" it (stretch the rules to the limits to make sure we get even the slightest edge) in our new field!!!! Heck as far as that goes install mirrors so that the sun can hammer the opposing team's sidelines and the light hinders their ability to see what is happening on the fied so the coaches ability to make sight adjustments is neutralized and the heat rises exponentially. Tit for Tat

If you leave the door open for home field advantages then watch out! We already know that teams pipe in crowd noise and amp up volumes, they make you wear dark colors when it is really hot and white's when it is cold. So come on Commish, you regulate Everything else in the NFL, -regulate the very ground the franchise players play on cause you can blow out a knee real easily on junk like that... and for all of those who don't believe me just go back in the 3rd quarter and watch DeMarcus Ware as he is engaging a Packer and his feet scissor out, sliding apart while he is fully engaging another man doing his best to push him into the ground, and watch how helpless he is because he can't stop them! As I watched I winced and thought, "oh no, his knee," but thanks be to God, he was okay.

Unfair advantage or do we let it slide and decide to take advantage of making unfair advantages in our new billion dollar home???

Running Back FACEMASK

So we are all worried that Marion Barber is going to rack up 3 or 4 facemask penalties per game, but did you see how many times Brian Westbrook Grasped our defenders facemasks?!

When Patrick Watkins got flagged look at the shot of Westbrook, fingers tipped into the helmet in a death grip pushing on Watkins...but he wasn't called, nor was he called at all during the game. I saw at least 4 times, two of which his fingers gripped the mask...still no penalty! So what's up with this new call that is going uncalled?

And how bad a night did the Ref.s have missing or messing up calls! By my count there were 6 to 8 missed or blown calls. For 3 quarters of the game I thought they couldn't throw the flag on the eagles....and just what constitutes a hold? Jersey pull, miss directing a body? --Like oh say Jenkins at the goal line when Westbrook scored on the out pass! COME On Refs, play fair!!!

And one final point. Sure McNabb got free a lot on his own but go back and re-watch, their line blocked to the ground! Hudson H. teach our guys to stay with the block as long as they do and then to also push the pile!!! Man does it make a difference! Oh and Defense take some karate in the off season so you can bat away their hands Before they grab you cause DeMarcus looked like a kid grabbed by his dad when their much bigger tackle got his hands on him (remember DeMarc your legs where built for speed, you don't have the big butt of Reggie White to jack people and bull rush them back into the Qb, so hit him, bounce, rip and redirect...and see if he can catch up with you then!).

What Makes Motivation

I've been trying to figure out what makes for improved motivation come December. Is it having something to play for within the season still (like the Giants seeking the Wild Card and so it was push or bust)?

Is it the coaching staff seeing new things and coming up with motivation for tired players (and maybe bored players if there's not a lot to play for) like the Giant's defensive coordinator did by challenging his guys to cover and then feeding them with blitz's such that while other teams were coasting his started boasting sacks and pressures and INTs?

Seems conditioning is out of the question because we get the Thanksgiving 10 day break.... but then again is it? What do they do conditioning wise? Run, lift, playbook (conditioning for the mind), and execution of plays.... is any of that building towards December or needing to change so it can build in December? What do other teams do? And wouldn't it be wise of Jerry to do a study of the 10 most successful teams in the month of December, all their routines, treatments, strategies and regiments? Consistent winners win consistently for easy to document reasons and obviously we need to find a working pattern that works.

I see it the NFL keeps putting at least 2 divisional games in December for us so if we can't get up for Philly and the Skins and or the G-men then who can we get excited for.....and yet look what we have done! Would charting our Decembers help using all the factors you can think of? How about a slightly different approach, why don't we try some different things? ---Off the top of my head as a for instance- one big concern is wearing guys out before the Playoffs. Well that can be done mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. What do you think, if we have a winning total lead like last year going into December why don't we decide to rotate Second String guys up to Starters during the Thanksgiving day game (and progressively use them for two games in December before putting in our top dogs again). It might get the First String guys to act as mentors; it might also irritate them and remind them that they Want to be the starters so come December they do still have something learn and to prove (in a hope to reinject heart and a need to will us over the top). --You know a sword is only sharpened by the friction of another hard surface. And really, something Has to change. It is bad enough to loose in December but to loose to Washington and Philly is horrible and even worst when you are dominated and made to look and feel bad like we have been for the last 3 or 4 years...and ever the question of WHY?

So what are your thoughts? Maybe our brainstorming will hit a note or strike a key and get pushed along to the big brass to look at and maybe, just maybe it will help our Cowboys to reverse that trend in crunch month, December. Cause I would love for people to start fearing playing Dallas at the end of the year!

UNSpecial Teams

First, for all of us who were denied the start and first half of the first quarter --the Boys will be aired again but in Full Monday at 3pm on NFL Network....although we still have to listen to their announcers.

On to the very Unspecial Teams unit. Can anyone say balance, balance, balance? Why did our left side get down the field flushing their man to our right side where we were 4 seconds late on coverage....ALL night long??? Where's the speed we've heard and read about all during camp?

Mentioning speed, whoever is teaching our guys needs to De-emphasize that word. I saw at least 3 times when we received kick-offs and our guy (since the player, not the approach, varied) thought by running as fast as he could something might open up for him. The name of the game in returns is to set up the other team, to realize that they are following the ball carrier so if your coverage is to the left and you run directly left then you create a 5pm rushhour log jam around your blockers (ie- no holes, lots of tacklers). Be elusive, run to your off side pulling their coverage & creating openings then run to where you have help. --See our guys wont be fooled. First off they aren't watching you like the kickoff people are and second they know where they are suppose to be. Back to the speed issue. When we received the kick off we raced forward and ran into the backs of our own guys, no cutting, no elusiveness, just bammmm-right into the back of the mass of bodies. Then on coverages here comes the speed again, only this time it flushes the pocket and runner because the speed is not balanced and now their returner becomes elusive instead of running into the pack where there are a hundred arms waiting to grab him.

The next issue with speed that needs looking at is the braking part. Speed for the sake of speed only gets you near the ball carrier and past him with but a moment to do anything. That's fine if he is still looking up in the air to field the ball (ie-unable to evade you, a helpless blocking dummy ready to be drummed good), but if he's got it then one juke move and you run past him at 90 miles an hour meaning they now have one more blocker than we have rusher since you've taken yourself out of the play. Teach'em to run down and break down giving the return man a body he has to get away from for several seconds not one split second. Speed to get there, brakes to stop just in front of him for Contain (a word I saw none of last night) and then quickness to match his moves and shrink the distance to make the tackle and allow the rest of the team to meet you at the goal...decking the ball carrier.

Balance! Speed on the front end to get there and pursue. Use your mind and your wheels. Think like a hornet not a bullet. My best buddy is a cop and he told me this after catching a robber. The robber says he is smarter than most folks cause they run in straight lines to get away from a gun fight but I know bullets can't turn corners... so I do (valid point but he just couldn't out run my buddy). Getting away sometimes isn't about distance it is about creating angles to make other guys miss, cause getting in the endzone with ten guys right on your tail is still worth 6 points and beats blinding straight-line speed that runs right into a single tackler!!! A bullet's threat may be its missle like speed but it has only one split second to hit you and if you are a wiggling and darting target, not one running in a straight line, then the chances of it hitting its intended mark are reduced a thousand to one. A hornet on the other hand approaches with speed and then slows till it determines its closing range then brings it. If it misses it has not thrown itself completely out of play and turns and re-enters the attack. I have been missed by a bullet before and stung by a number of hornets, so Boys --- learn to swarm!

Here's hoping we devote three practices to getting the guys sore from all the Special Teams practices we run them through....while they are Tackling at full speed learning to hate their mistakes enough to never make them again. We need special teams to be Special.

Rules in Review

The 2 Rules to be discussed are the 1. Receiver must come downs in bounds Rule and 2. the Facemask Rule aka-The Marion Rule.

So I just read that the push out of bound rule Does have a stipulation and that is if the defenders carry the receiver out of bounds.....that's the same old thing Again!!! How do the Officials determine he is "carried"? I mean if he is pushed when he was in the air with the ball (or receiver) being inside yet above the endzone and they keep contact with him isn't that a push out AND a carry? So isn't the rule only a technicality ? I guess I need to hear or see what is determined to be a carry. Does it mean the receiver is on their heads or backs or just somehow being held above the ground long enough by the defenders to get him out of bounds (which if you think of it is not hard cause their speed and momentum and any contact at all could easily drift them a yard or two and then activate the "carried" out part). And is it reviewable???

Okay, the Marion Rule. You can't put your hand on their facemask.... what about on their head? I mean a tackler is racing at you in a near horizontal lay out and about the only thing you can touch is his head/helmet. By the letter of the law it is not the facemask, neither is the crown and the side of the helmet...so can they be used to fight back or deflect a defender? Seems like if a ball carrier puts his hand straight out and touches the top of the helmet or the back of it then the defender is spearing him because his face is down and he is coming in with the crown of the helmet, so maybe it is legal to push the top of the helmet..... Seems the rule gives more power to the defense if no part of the helmet can be pushed on.

Who can clear this or these up?

Rules Clarification -Pushed Out of Bounds

Hey, Clarify for me the new rule Change. The NFL will no longer allow a catch to be determined as IN BOUNDS if the player is pushed out of bounds before his feet come down.

SO, does that mean that all defensive backs should push the receivers as hard as they can to try and get them out of bounds before they can come down with both feet in bounds???

And what happens if a DB is able to military press the guy up in the air long enough to run him out of bounds, how do they determine that?

Or how about an on-sides kick where it goes 10 yards and takes a high hop and someone from the kicking side jumps and grabs it but lands on a pile that then takes a couple of steps and dumps him out of bounds. Clearly he would have landed in bound and recovered the ball for his team but since his feet never touched would they rule it as the ball goes to the Receiving team because of this rule change? Bill Parcells would know wouldn't he!
