Burnt Orange Nation Ideas for a new Texas mascot

I've been thinking about our season and the dismal turn of events things seem to have taken over the last few months. Teams like Baylor and Iowa State really humbled us and took us down a few notches. With the assistant prospects so bleak, our messiah turning Judas and leaving us for a swampy wasteland, an ineffective and naive CEO who cares more about his friends than winning games, an interception machine at QB, and our fabulous and fun-filled trip to the Sitting At Home Bowl 2010, it's hard to see how things could get much worse.

I think our problem is arrogance and entitlement. This is most obvious in our use of a proud, tough, majestic and beautiful steer as our mascot. I propose that as a show of humility (or perhaps as a karmic offering to the football gods) we change our mascot to something more representative of our situation.

A chicken cockroach with its head cut off is an obvious (albeit cliched) choice, but rather graphic to put on a kid's T-shirt. Bunny rabbits might be appropriate, but then again, rabbits have a running game. The large, slow-moving Galapagos tortoise has a certain charm to it, but maybe we should pick something more native to Texas?

Let's come up with a mascot that truly represents our program. Good categories to pick from include animals who tend to let wide-open prey get right by them, animals who blindly follow a leader, and animals who eat their young. Discuss!

P.S. Naturally, if we change our mascot, we'll need a new logo, as well. As my suggestion and in homage to the school I currently attend, I've changed my avatar to a medal featuring St. Jude, who as you may know is, fittingly, the Catholic patron saint of lost causes.

P.P.S. I'm supposed to be studying for my evidence final, so let me just add: hearsay. best evidence rule. objection.

Burnt Orange Nation Annual ritual telling of the Aggie jokes

Well folks, it's that time again. We're playing the Aggies on Thursday, and that means it's time for a (short) week of true stories about Aggies we've known hilarious jokes at little brother's expense. Post 'em here if you got 'em. I'll get us started:

Burnt Orange Nation Saturday football open thread

For those of us watching football today, a place for us to relax and enjoy the fact that there is no possibility of Texas losing today.

Bama vs. the Cocks, Michigan (sucks!) at Sparty, the farmers and the piggies, Les Miles vs. the Tebows-minus-Tebow, Noles vs. Canes, or the Feminine Hygiene Product Bowl...what game are you most interested in? What game are you watching? I'll be at ND Stadium this afternoon watching the Irish take on the pornstache. Cheer for the Irish and Our Lady will bless you.

[Today is all about secondary allegiances, envying teams with legitimate offenses, and enjoying the losses of teams you don't like...cough...Notre Dame. Join us won't you? -LH]

The Waco Tribune-Herald this past weekend selected a Super Centex all-decade team, also picking an overall central Texas player, offensive player, defensive player, and coach. Quan was chosen as the overall player of the decade, while Derrick Johnson was chosen as the defensive player of the decade. Former Longhorn Ramonce Taylor was selected to the second team.

Burnt Orange Nation Bob Stoops looking to be next ND coach?

He's been one of the names bandied about for Weis's replacement, and now the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that he has told people he'd be interested in talking to ND.

Thoughts?  Is this legit, or is he angling for more money from OU? If it is legit, would you rather he stayed at OU or left to try to salvage the Irish?

I am actually a grad student at ND, and I do not want Stoops coaching the Irish.  I'm pulling for Cincy's Brian Kelly myself.
