UT FB Camp Notes

All of the 2010 commits were there save Ashton Dorsey (Don't look too much into that.)

Wilson and Daniels worked out together and looked...fast.

McCoy and Woods were tossing around the rock with D White. The receivers this year were spectacular.  No commit from White.

Has anyone seen Trovon Reed or Lache Seastrunk? Mack hasn't either. Reed cancelled, Lache may be a no show.  If so Mack may see the ensuing circus and hedge his bets.

Of the linebackers Aaron Franklin showed really well and may be recieving an offer in the near future.

None of the West Orange Stark boys were offered.

It doesn't look like there were any new offers extended.

A couple of surprises. One Christian Westerman, an OL from AZ showed up. Don't really know much about him. But he made the effort to come so the staff will evaluate him.  I expect him to become a 2011 target.  Also 2010 Denton Receiver Bud Sasser apparently showed well.

Next week expect Aaron Green and Demarco Cobbs to show.

9:29 ET...I think Herschel Sims might be a dark horse as RB prospect for Texas.

Poll
I feell like Seastrunk's recruitment is becoming a Circus. He is clinging to Trovon and has intimated his intentions to commit to Auburn. These coupled with what appears to be a no show today kinda make me think...
Jury is still out on this one.

Ross Apo recieved the MVP at this Camp in CA. This should help quash any talk of him not being worthy. Big Kid, BIG strides and great hands. It looks like he has high top end speed but slow acceleration.
BTW his shorts say OU.

COBBS/HICKS/SEASTRUNK

My Peeps, It appears that my initial intuition about Demarco Cobbs was correct. He recently did an interview with the Scout.com in which he ranked OU fourth behind Southern Cal , Florida and Louisiana State. After the whole JR day fiasco I'm not sure we are too interested anymore anyway.

Jordan Hicks recently attended a combine in Cincinati in which he gained more acclaim. He Posted a 4.5/40 on a "soft" surface with 37 inch vertical. The kid is explosive! He is also hard to read. Some boards say it looks good for Texas, I say its too ambiguous to call anything in this one.

Rivals.com recently came out with their top 100 in which they included a small blurb from each five star. Seastrunk was bitter about some the criticism he was recieving. (couldn't find the link) Something like I don't know how those people judge me and don't even know me. I wonder if he.., cuz I ... Anyways, for the record I think with he, Gilbert and D. White we would be the best offense ever.

I still think LM gets him.

This and $6.95...

will buy you a cup of coffee at Starbuck's. With Texas toeing the NCAA commit limit in the 2010 recruiting class some recruits are beginning to show their colors. As my title initimates any real finality is atleast 11 months away but atleast some credence could be given to my speculation on these matters.

Dear PB/HB/GOBR, Et al..., PT3

Special Teams, Punting We have some the best most consistent punting in the nation, although that rugby style punt can get Sporty. Punt coverage was sketchy at times. We gave up more yards than I would have liked. The Williamses were studs last year. M Williams was almost always the first one down and A Williams was a punt blocking Ma-cheen. I expect that incoming freshmen Davis and/or Barnett will also add some pressure. Shipley did well as the returner but I expect to see a different face on returns. Maybe Hales or A Williams or, he is still here, DJ Monroe. Kick Offs We had awesome kickers, I wish we could have gotten more touchbacks, but that is asking alot. Again we gave up alot of yards in coverage at crucial moments. (Tech) But it improved at the end of the season. Same deal with the returners. FGs Again 2 great kickers. I think there was a low in kicking in the middle of the season but was overall consistent. I expect consistency this year. We could always use more blocks.

Dear PB/HB/GOBR, Et al..., PT2

Let's talk some O.

O-line.

Sigh. What is the deal here??? We lose Dockery.  But our line play was less than impressive last year.  Alot of our run game problems start here. Colt was on his back alot as well.  We have a five star coming in Mason Wolters.  Huey and Snow were getting acclaim at the beginning of last season.  An ijury prone Ulatoski returns this year. Tanner and Hix also coming back.  We need vast improvement here.

QB

I think we are good, except McCoy would occaisionally regress.  He still had a few fumbles.  Expect to see Colt taking more snaps under center and more downfield bombs.  Back Up...................................................................................................................

............................... John Chiles should be penciled in, but if Gilbert gets PT that will leave 2 years for McCoy 2.0 or other.  It is very speculative right now, especially since Case is stil in HS and -other- is undetermined.  I like Sherrod Harris alot, but it is not looking good for him.

RB

Call me crazy but I think we are lookin good here.  The Foz should be our no.1 but McGee could just as easily be that if he can learn to pick up the blitz.  I thought our backs did well when they could get past the first level.  The line had real problems last year and the backs were not mature enough.  We lose the big play capability of Ogbannaya. I did say big play, and it is earned. In reserve we have Hills, Newton with Whaley coming in. CJ still bringing the house, he had no probs breaking through, but his top end speed was lacking. If he can shed some pounds like the staff wants he might improve there.  One more thing, I noticed the Foz motioned  to wideout in the two minute drill, so his hands are probably decent.  I expect to be better here.

WR

I think Collins/Kirkendoll can be our possesion reciever. Shipley, nuff said. Malcolm Williams' time has come. Excited to see him this year.  Buckner was not real impressive last year but size can give him confidence, he or Grant may switch to TE. Also we have Webber, Payne, Hales and Monroe in the wings.  I expect some transfers and/or Monroe may switch to defense.  Look for more downfield passing to help our run game.

TE

I am not holding my breath for Irby, its a shame too.  Marshall should be back and we have Mathews and Graham coming in.  This is a real immediate need.  Big questions remain here.

G Davis

I thought he did well last year.  While we were not one dimensional, we struggled when the defense brought their safeties up.  We have some legit deep threats this year which should back the defenses off.  Expect less spread this year and more running.  Overall I think we are better, but I expect Cosby will be missed on some 3rd/4th downs.  If we can control the clock better it will help our defense tremendously.
