Mile High Report 2 NFL players among boaters missing off Fla. coast

i think this is important ....

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP)—The Coast Guard searched off Florida’s Gulf Coast on Sunday for a fishing boat carrying NFL players Corey Smith and Marquis Cooper and two other men missing more than a day in choppy seas.

Smith, a defensive end for the Detroit Lions, and Cooper, an Oakland Raiders linebacker, were on a 21-foot vessel that left Clearwater Pass for a fishing trip Saturday morning and did not return as expected, the Coast Guard said Sunday. Crews used a helicopter and an 87-foot ship to search a 750-square mile area west of Clearwater Pass, but poor weather made the search difficult. Officials did not receive a distress signal from the missing craft.

Cooper owns the boat and he and Smith have been on fishing trips before, said Ron Del Duca, Smith’s agent. The pair had been teammates on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2004. Two others were aboard: Will Bleakley and Nick Schuyler, both former University of South Florida players.

Coast Guard Capt. Timothy M. Close said the weather early Saturday had been fair, but worsened toward the evening as a front moved in. The National Weather Service said seas were about 2 to 4 feet Saturday morning and increased to 3 to 5 feet in the afternoon. Late Saturday night, a small craft advisory was issued, when winds were around 20 knots and seas were up to 7 feet or more. There were no thunderstorms in the area.

Close said the men were traveling in a boat manufactured by Everglades. At least one of the men was an experienced boater, and relatives provided the Coast Guard with GPS coordinates from previous fishing expeditions.

Close said there was no communication with the men even before the weather started to pick up. They were expected home by early evening. No sign of them or the boat had been spotted by Sunday evening. Relatives told the Coast Guard the men had lifejackets and flares onboard.

Poor weather conditions could be dangerous for a boat the size of Cooper’s.

“A 21-foot boat is a relatively small vessel to be 50 miles off shore in bad weather conditions, certainly the current weather conditions,” Close said.

Close said there was no sign yet that the men sent a distress signal.

“That’s not to say they didn’t send one out,” he said. “We didn’t receive anything.”

Danielle Mayes, owner of Jaxson’s Bait House near the ramp where the men departed, said Saturday had been deceptively beautiful. The weather was warm, and boaters had packed the small parking lot overlooking seaside condominiums and light blue waters.

Mayes said many of the boaters who returned Saturday evening said they were surprised that the water had gotten so rough.

The Coast Guard search was mainly by air, and was hampered by the poor weather, Close said. He said there were 14-foot seas offshore and wind gusts of up to 30 mph. Water depth in the search area ranges from 20 to 50 feet. The Coast Guard originally sent a 47-foot ship to search for the men around 2 a.m Sunday. It returned to dock about eight hours later and was replaced by a larger ship, in part because of the weather.

Smith, 29, had 30 tackles, including three sacks, and an interception in 12 games last season for the winless Lions. Smith, who is 6-foot-2, 250 pounds, also played for the San Francisco 49ers and played college ball at North Carolina State. He lives in Richmond, Va.

Del Duca said Smith is one of the “good guys” of the league and was planning to start visiting teams as a free agent this week. He said he has spoken with Smith’s family and is also in touch with Coast Guard officials.

“They’ve assured me that they’re deploying all available resources to look for these guys and get them back,” he said.

Cooper, 26, has played five seasons with the Buccaneers, Seahawks, Jaguars, Steelers and Raiders. He appeared in 26 games with the Buccaneers in 2004 and 2005, recording 30 tackles. He has played sparingly since as he has bounced between teams, appearing in 13 games and recording 10 tackles. Cooper, who is 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, played college ball at Washington. He grew up in Gilbert, Ariz., and his father Bruce is a prominent sportscaster for KPNX-TV in Phoenix.

Cooper told The Seattle Times in 2002 that one reason he chose Washington was the abundant fishing.

“I like fighting the fish,” Cooper told the newspaper. “And just relaxing out there and being alone and being outside.”

Bruce Cooper described his son as an avid fisherman who goes deep sea fishing “any opportunity he gets.” The two went deep sea fishing together two years ago.

“I swore I would never do so again,” Cooper said in a statement. “I didn’t like the fact that I couldn’t see land. Needless to say I am very concerned. I am praying and hoping for the best.”

Stu Schuyler, Nick’s father, said his son had gone fishing with the same group of friends last weekend, apparently en route to a shipwreck about 50 miles offshore where fish are abundant. He said he left his son a message on his cell phone Saturday morning, asking him not to stay out too late because of the approaching storm.

“I’m optimistic,” Schuyler said. “But I’m also realistic.”

Lions spokesman Bill Keenist and Raiders senior executive John Hererra said the teams are monitoring reports. Both teams issued statements saying their thoughts and prayers are with the families of all the missing men and those involved in the search.

While the search continued, Cooper’s pickup truck and boat trailer remained in the parking lot near the boat launch. On the dashboard was a one-day parking receipt that expired Sunday morning.

“Please contact the Coast Guard,” a note left tucked underneath a windshield wiper read. “Someone was worried about your welfare.”

Associated Press Writer Sarah Larimer in Miami contributed to this report.

Mile High Report McDaniels talks about the trade ....

http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_11810112

"He's not the only person in the last few days we've received calls on," McDaniels said. "We've received trade calls on a number of players, which is not uncommon this time of the year. I also think the sensitivity of the other trade that was occurring, with my relationship with New England and the whole Cassel thing, I think that stirred the pot even more."

And then McDaniels made a point of emphasis: "We don't want to trade Jay. We never did. He's our quarterback. We're excited about this season. And excited about what we're doing here in free agency to improve our team."

Mile High Report Jay Cutler's agent responds to trade rumors

Jay Cutler's agent responds to trade rumors

<!-- / icon and title --><!-- message --> http://www.kdvr.com/news/kdvr-cutler...,5433550.story

DENVER - Jay Cutler's agent, Bus Cook, sounds about as surprised as everybody else in Denver. "I am hearing all of these rumors now just like everybody else," said Cook in a phone conversation with FOX 31 Sports Saturday afternoon.

Recently an NFL.com report surfaced indicating that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at some point approached the Denver Broncos to construct a three-way trade that would have sent Broncos' starting quarterback Jay Cutler to the Buccaneers, and the newly signed Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel to the Broncos.

According to the report, the conclusion was that the Broncos considered the deal, but thought against pulling the trigger.

So how does Cook feel about his client possibly being on the trading block?

"I heard the rumors like everybody else, and I placed a call to the Broncos," he said. Cook clarified to FOX31 Sports that because Cutler is currently under contract with the Broncos, his agent does not have permission to talk to other teams about his client, unless it was given to him by the Broncos. "I just got a return call. They just told me that only inquiries were being made."

Cook said that he could not confirm the teams involved in the reported deal. The report also indicated that the Detroit Lions approached the Broncos on a separate deal for Cutler using Cassel as bait as well.

The only thing Cook was clear about, was that the Broncos did not specifically guarantee Cutler's future with the club.

"They never definitively told me one way or the other whether [Cutler] would be traded or not. Nobody has talked to me, and no other teams have talked to me."

When Cook was informed that FOX31 Sports talked to a Broncos offensive starter on the team that said, "Jay Cutler is pissed, no doubt about it," he did not react with surprise.

"I wouldn't blame him for being upset. Cutler is the best young quarterback in the entire league."

Other Broncos interviewed for the story were "completely shocked" that Cutler's would be included in any sort of trade talks.

As for reports that Cook's other client, Broncos tight end Tony Scheffler, is on the trading block as well, Cook remains just as flabbergasted.

"I don't know what's true or not true, all of this right now is just crazy."

Mile High Report more RUMORs on Cutler

from a post of orangemane ....

RUMOR: Xanders and McDaniels disagreed on potential deal

<!-- / icon and title --><!-- message --> * RUMOR ALERT * I was given this information this morning by a trustworthy source in the media that I've used sparingly in the past. I have no idea about the validity of it but wanted to pass along the info. Again, I'm passing along a RUMOR here, and that's all:

What I was told was McDaniels and Xanders disagreed on a potential 3-way deal that would've sent Jay Cutler to Tampa, Matt Cassel to Denver and draft picks to New England. Apparently, while attempting to finalize a deal with Brian Dawkins Friday night, the Broncos received the call about that potential deal. I was told that McDaniels wanted to do the deal to get his guy but Xanders did not. After the much publicized deliberation, Xanders put the kibosh to the deal as he has full authority over personnel. This may have occurred around the same time Kansas City formalized their deal for Cassel creating the effect that the Broncos wanted the deal to go through. In short, the Broncos planned on turning the deal down but did consider it. However, if this RUMOR is true it shows that not only are McDaniels and Xanders possibly not on the same page, but the GM may have more clout than we expected.

With his free-agency visit to Cincinnati completed, running back Derrick Ward is on his way to Denver, according to a league source.

Ward will meet with Broncos officials on Sunday.

He's regarded as one of the top running backs on the market, and several teams have expressed interest. His age (28) could be impacting the magnitude of any offers he has received.

Mile High Report Favre, Rivers out of Pro Bowl

Favre, Rivers out of Pro Bowl

<!-- / icon and title --><!-- message --> By Bill Williamson
ESPN.com

There was movement on the AFC Pro Bowl quarterback roster on Tuesday.

Both the Jets' Brett Favre and the Chargers' Philip Rivers are not going to play in the game because of injuries. Tennessee's Kerry Collins has been named to the roster. Favre was one of three AFC quarterbacks to be named to the Pro Bowl last month. Rivers was the No. 1 alternate. Collins was the No. 2 alternate.

Favre's absence was long expected. He ended the season with a shoulder injury. He rarely played in the Pro Bowl while with Green Bay. Favre is considering retirement, so he may have played his final game.

Rivers is not playing because of a sore knee, a Chargers' spokesman said Tuesday night. The spokesman said Rivers is not expected to have surgery. Rivers is not expected to miss any of the Chargers' offseason condition program. Rivers suffered a torn ACL in the 2007 playoffs but played without issue in 2008 and had his best NFL season.

Collins was a surprise standout for the Titans, who had the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs after going 13-3. Collins, who took over for Vince Young early in the season, threw for 2,678 yards and 12 touchdowns. He will join Peyton Manning of the Colts and Jay Cutler of the Broncos as the AFC's quarterbacks. The game will be played in Honolulu on Feb. 8.

Bill Williamson covers the AFC West for ESPN.com.

Mile High Report Jake Plummer: Smiled When Shanny was Fired

Plummer reflects on Cards' emergence

Jake Plummer should be here. He should watch Sunday's game in a luxury suite. He should have a beer in each hand and a Pat Tillman jersey on his back, reminiscing about the day he beat the Eagles in Philly with one of his patented miracle comebacks.

Instead, he will be playing at a handball tournament in Seattle, trying to further his promising singles career. Something is wrong with this picture.

"I tell you what: I would love to throw the ball to Larry Fitzgerald," Plummer said.

"I had some good ones in Arizona, but, man, that guy is talented."

Only 34, Plummer once was our golden boy, the kid who was going to lead us to the NFC Championship Game.

He was the hometown hero, and the deconstruction of that legend might have hurt worse than anything along the way.

He had a frat boy's sense of fun along with a touch of magic. He was more instinctual than intellectual. He was a star at Arizona State.

And then all the losing and all the interceptions and all the negativity simply crushed a favorite son.

"Getting your (backside) kicked all the time was really rough, but (ownership) didn't care one way or the other," Plummer said. "They just wanted a stadium. If we won, it was a bonus. But they were right. They have a stadium, and what they promised has become a reality. They have delivered on their word."

Plummer is not trying to bad-mouth the Cardinals. He's just a completely honest, zero-B.S. kind of guy. And even though he's fully enjoying his new life, the past two months have hit close to home.

First, the Cardinals. During the 2008 season, Plummer occasionally would check the NFL standings. Not only were the Cardinals in first place, they were in control of their division. They had a true home-field advantage, and Plummer should be proud of that.

After all, the day before the crucial stadium vote, it was Plummer who went door to door soliciting votes, as did teammate Rob Moore, coach Dave McGinnis and Fiesta Bowl President John Junker.

That's how tenuous the proposal was at the time.

After his time in Arizona was done, Plummer made a choice that would change his life. He decided against Chicago, where the bar for quarterbacks was set wonderfully low. He signed with Denver, where the shadow of John Elway swallows all.

Plummer has no regrets. He loved the city, the people and the fervor for football in Denver. But when offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak left to coach the Texans, everything changed. Plummer and coach Mike Shanahan weren't exactly peanut butter and bananas, and Plummer was eventually benched in favor of rookie Jay Cutler.

In the end, Plummer went from a culture of failure to a city with impossible standards. The death of Tillman affected him profoundly, planting seeds of rebellion. And when it all hit the wall in Denver, he walked out on the game and the people who had crushed his love for football.

"Shanahan was a great coach, to a certain level," Plummer said. "But I have to admit, I had a smile on my face when I heard he was fired. Not that it did me any good.

"I loved going out and competing, but it's tough when you're constantly second-guessed. I can still remember throwing a ball in practice, and I didn't know whether he was going to scream at me or say, 'Great play.' "

As Plummer dives into the handball circuit, a funny thing has happened. He's in great shape all over again. He's 190 pounds and quick as a cat. He can get out of his car and break into a sprint, something that was impossible during his achy football career. He loves that feeling and says he's never coming back to the NFL.

"If I could go and just play the game, I'd do it tomorrow," Plummer said. "It's all the other stuff that I got tired of. But I walked away with all my ligaments and limbs intact, ready to face the rest of my life."

This weekend, that means putting on goggles and competing on a small court, using a small, blue ball.

And it means a date with the television set, watching a team that almost took flight under his watch. It's a team he can't get out of his heart.

"When I left, Mike (Bidwill) told my agent to tell me not to bad-mouth the team," Plummer said.

"But they've come a long way. They're focusing on their personnel, not just a stadium. And it would be nice for Mike to get some credit. I know I'll be cheering for them. That's my old team."

Mile High Report Is there any chance of Lynch come back?

someone knows if is there any chance of Lynch come back?

RMN: "Lynch reiterated that he's not bitter toward the Broncos. "I think the team had moved on," he said. "When the team moves on, it's time for you to move on." When asked if there's any scenario that would put him back in a Denver uniform, injury or otherwise, Lynch told me probably not." Mile High Report Rumor: Mike Bell to be Released

Rumor: Mike Bell to be Released

Posted in Broncos Buzz by Kyle on Mon Jul 21st

[Bell]

Denver Broncos running back Mike Bell apparently isn’t feeling too god about his job security. Bell told CBS4 Denver’s Gary Miller that he expects to be released when he meets with Head Coach Mike Shanahan today.

Playing fullback last year after some success at tailback in 2006, Bell rarely saw the field and even fumbled the ball on one of his few carries in 2007. The re-signing of Cecil Sapp and the use of a 7th round draft choice on Peyton Hillis all but guaranteed Bell would have a difficult time making the team.

The Broncos need to release two players in order to sign their rookie class to contracts.

No surprise here, I didn’t think Bell had much of a chance to make the team in the long run either way. At least this gives him time to try to latch onto another team, although the crop of free agent running backs out there will make it difficult.
