Trade Idea: With Hornets

I was reading a chat on Hoopsworld today someone asked about a trade of Corey Maggette for Julian Wright and Mo Peterson. The guy running the chat said he thought it would be a steal for the Hornets, but personally i wouldn't mind getting rid of Maggette's contract.

I played around on trade machine and actually noticed two trades that work, so here goes:

Trade 1: Maggette for Julian Wright and Antonio Daniels (A draft pick would be nice, probably a pick in the 20's but next years draft is supposed to be deep and it might make up for the Marcus Williams pick we traded away if we have to give it up next year)

Hornets: The Hornets would do this because they seriously need some scorers especially with how unreliable Peja's back is. I personally even like Maggette's game, especially as a 6th man, but his contract just reaches too far into the future. Hornets are/were in cost cutting mode, but the fact that they traded for Okafor makes me wonder if they would really oppose getting Mags. Also Daniels might not have too many minutes with Darren Collison coming in.

Warriors: Essentially we would do this for expiring contracts, the draft pick, and the "potential" of Julian Wright. Julian Wright's option needs to be picked up if we want him in the future. Daniels is a 34 year old veteran point guard which could provide some stability at times or he could just join our already super crowded back court filled with expiring point guards (Speedy, Law).

I can't remember really seeing him play, but i can confidently say he doesn't scream super star or anything like that. However, apparently he is a hard worker and a nice perimeter defender. I certainly wouldn't mind getting some perimeter defenders on our team and even though he is somewhat raw offensively he is young and can grow and develop with our young guys. (Morrow, Wright, Randolph as workout buddies over the summer would make for some summer entertainment). Wright is 6'8 and 225 pounds, he was the 13th pick in the 2007 nba draft.

Here is what Espn's fantasy projection had to say about him (updated august 25, 2008): 2009 Season Outlook

"When Wright came into the league last season, many of us thought we would see a player who would become a more athletic version of Boris Diaw. Wright is turning into something else altogether: a defensive specialist. We like Wright to help deep-league teams in steals and, to a lesser extent, blocks. Offensively, he is still out of control, as his 4.7 turnovers per game in the summer league demonstrated."

News: Coach Byron Scott said he might consider starting Wright ahead of Peja Stojakovic next season, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Spin: Wright came on especially strong during the Hornets' final two summer league games, averaging 21.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals on 57.6% shooting (19-of-33). "I think this could be a breakout year for Julian," Scott said. "You know Julian is going to be a good player because you see him putting in the work every day. I think that's the No. 1 thing." Stojakovic's lower back has hampered him for two of the past three seasons, and playing less could extend his career.

Trade 2: Maggette for Julian Wright and Mo Peterson (Again a draft pick would be nice too)

Trade is basically the same for both teams except Peterson is a little younger, a shooting guard, and has 2 years at about 6 million a piece of his contract. Peterson has a career average of 11 points per game and is a pretty decent 3 point shooter, but not sure he would be a better addition. I also see the hornets prefering to give up daniels seeing as Darren Collison looks competent enough to be a reserve PG and their needs at shooting guard being greater.

Corey Maggette: Out one month after wrist surgery

I was just watching NBA tv and on the NBA News bar at the bottom of the screen it says Corey Maggette is out one month after having wrist surgery. Obviously him being out over the summer does not really affect us, but it has to make one wonder how injury prone he will be the next few years.

Last year he was hampered by various injuries, especially his hamstrings. If that was the only time he has missed time due to injury I would just ignore it, last season was a throw away season anyways, but he has NEVER played a full season. In his ten year career he has played 640 of 820 games (not including playoffs), thats 78% of the time. A very notable point is that Maggette has never played real major minutes, only 3 seasons with more then 35 minutes a game and a career average of less then 29.3 minutes per game.

I find it very hard to believe this is going to get any better as he ages. Unfortunately his contract is also getting bigger.

I like Maggette's ability to score and respect him for willingly coming off the bench last year, but I don't think he is a benefit to our team at this point and his injury woes really bother me. Not even going to get into the fact that he kills all ball movement. Imagine paying him 10 million a year in a few years to play 25 or so minutes 50 games a year.

I propose we trade Maggette & Marcus Williams for Joe Smith & Damien Wilkins and a draft pick or two in the next few years. While i don't hate Maggette, i don't think he has been playing very well considering his contract. This persistent thigh injury is very frustrating, but should have been expected seeing as Maggette has played 605 games of a possible 754, which is just over 80%.

He seems like a nice guy that could potentially inspire good work ethic in our rookies, but he has not been a difference maker for us, if anything, the opposite. Our record with Maggette has been been 3-13(.1875) and 6-9 (.400) without him according to Tim Kawakami.

Looking at the stats sheet, this year he has shot his worst field goal percentage and three point percentage of his career. Most of his other statistics are down also, which should be the opposite considering the pace of the warriors. On the other hand he has shot free throws at his highest career percent, a very good .859.

Williams is obviously never ever ever ever going to get out of Nelson's dog house, which is unfortunate.

This trade does not get us a great/good player, unless the Thunder put Westbrook instead of Wilkins, but it does let us get rid of Maggette's contract and get a pick or two out of it. The picks we would get would definitely be good considering the Thunder suck...

Smith's contract is going to expire this year and Wilkins goes through next year for 3.3 million, which is much easier to stomach then Maggette's remaining BACKLOADED 50 million.

Oh and the best part is we get another one of our mid 90's number one overall picks back ala the Webber experiment last year.

Rumor: Marco Belinelli to.... Nets?

Hoopsworld.com is reporting that a trade might be in line for the Warriors and Nets ... again.

Here is what is said for the most part:

" The source explained that talks were on going between the Warriors and Nets, but that Marco was made aware of the talks and told that a deal could transpire soon.

Sources close to the Nets could not confirm that the Nets were talking trade with anyone.

Belinelli has played in 5 games for the warriors this season, logging 6 minutes per game on average."

I am not sure if I would be willing to give up on Marco. Although Morrow looks like he can shoot nearly as well if not better, I think Marco still has greater potential, especially if he develops his passing. The article did not state who or what we would receive in exchange.

Dickau Released, 1 Cut Left

According to 48 Minutes.net, our Warriors just released Dan Dickau. I suppose that was expected.

Trade With New York

Ok i really really dislike Stephon Marbury, i mean honestly he is a disease, but if i am not mistaken he has an expiring contract. So why not trade Al Harrington for Marbury and a future pick or two? Marbury could at least help Monta to run the point this year while he learns the ropes. To top it off he would be done next year and we would have a pick or two to show for it. I would be happy to part with Al if we got Marbury, a first round pick, and maybe even a second round pick. I read in some other post that if we traded Al we would have 18 million in cap space which is just enough to take Marbury.
