Terrible play by him. He's got the flat, f-ing you've got the slant.

Gruden on MNF during the Packers' last drive after James Jones catches a pass from Aaron Rodgers and runs for 34 yards before the two minute warning.

Did anyone else hear this? I was watching one of the feeds available at channelsurfing.net, and they didn't go to commercial for the two minute warning. You could hear the MNF hosts still talking although they sounded like they thought no one could hear them. None of them could believe how the Vikings blew the coverage, and Gruden was yelling at the player like he was the coach of the Vikings and that player could hear him.

Caldwell Madlib

Looking for fresh Colts content? Generate your own interview with lovable Coach Caldwell by filling in the blanks!

[Opposing team’s player]—you know he’s a guy that certainly does a lot of things extremely well in terms of [football skill-gerund] and things of that nature. He’s right around [number] in terms of his [football statistic], which is extremely high. Obviously we’ll have to be more consistent in terms of [football skill-gerund], and we’ll certainly have to be focused in our preparation this week. There were certainly a number of plays last week in which we [football skill-past] fairly well. We obviously wanted to try to [football skill] a little bit more and certainly [vague football skill] in a sense.

I thought that [Colts player], you know, certainly did a tremendous job in terms of [football skill-gerund]. He [football skill-past] extremely well and he is [football skill-gerund] consistently. I can’t say how long he’ll be out right now or what is the extent of his injury or any, you know, things of that nature. But obviously he’s a guy that always wants to [verb-infinitive] and he [verb-present] fairly well, and we certainly hope to have him on the field a bit more going forward.

"My lifetime goal is to have a late night talk show. Awesome. They get paid big. Leno has 300 cars and all he does is sit there and talk to people. Those guys, they don’t even write their own jokes," he said.

Certainly he would write his own jokes, right?

"Write? I can barely read," he joked.

Victor Harris versus Jerraud Powers

In Bamock's excellent review of the Colts' picks, he questions why the Colts picked Jerraud Powers when another cornerback, Victor Harris, was still available. Harris is two inches taller (5'11" compared to 5'9") although one pound lighter (187lbs to 188lbs). Without having ever heard either player speak, I thought the Colts may have been attracted to Powers' intelligence. It seems like they prioritize intelligence, and Colts' draftpicks sound similar to each other when they speak. So if there is an important difference that makes up for Powers' disadvantage in height, maybe it was that. I was kicking myself for never having heard Donald Brown speak, because he sounds just like a typical Colt, and I could have looked smart by predicting him as the Colts' pick. Anthony Gonzalez was the same way.

So I looked for video of Powers and Harris speaking. I expected that Harris might be less articulate but there really isn't enough apples to apples video to draw that conclusion, and Harris presents himself well in the few clips that I could find. Still, Powers sounds like a Colt, and I think that watching the video below will help convince people that he was a good pick.

Here is Powers talking at length to reporters after practice at Auburn. In this clip he is very relaxed and not watching his words as closely as Brown or Gonzalez in their first interviews as Colts, but as it goes on he reveals how hard he works, how smart he is, and how well he gets along with his coaches.

Here is Powers talking about Dean Chizik being hired as the new coach at Auburn:

Here is Victor Harris talking to Philly radio after being picked by the Eagles:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VduH9DHXSm8&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fvideo.google.com%2Fvideosearch%3Fq%3Dvictor%2520harris%26um%3D1%26ie%3DUTF-8%26sa%3DN%26hl%3Den%26tab%3Dwv&feature=player_embedded

Like I said, he speaks well, demonstrates a nice personality, and says all the right things. There's no ground for questioning his intelligence or character.

He appears early in this video recapping a big win:

He's sounds still excited about the game, but he reminds me of Bob Sanders with his enthusiasm for the younger players on the team.

So Victor sounds like a smart guy who enjoys playing and would fit in well, but I would say Powers' personality is clearly suited to the Colts, even if Victor would have been a good fit as well. I expected a bigger difference before I found the videos, but that's based only on the fact that the Colts picked one over the other. Maybe it was a tough choice for them. At the very least, we shouldn't be surprised or disappointed that Powers is a Colt.
