Stock is going down

I want to keep this short, until I see more games.

Javan Sneed
Ole Miss QB

Sneed hasn’t looked sharp in the two games I’ve seen him. Before the season I thought he could make a strong push to land in the top ten, and possibly be the number one overall pick. Against Memphis, Snead was 12-22, with 175 yards. He threw two picks and several passes off target. Then against South Carolina, he was just 7 for 21, for only 107 yards. Last year, he came on strong at the end of the year, but with Bama, Auburn, and Tennessee left on the schedule, I don’t see that happening again.

Taylor Mays
USC Safety

I still think Mays will be an early to mid first round pick, but there is no way he goes in front of Eric Berry. He has shown no playmaking ability, with zero interceptions this year, and only 4 in his career. He has one forced fumble in four years, and has zero sacks in his career. There is no question that he has elite physical and athletic ability, but I just haven’t seen it translate to the field at all. I love the way he flies around, but I do not like the angles he takes and his knockout mentality often translates to missed tackles. His combine numbers will probably be some of the best ever, but his game film won’t do him any good, unless he starts to become the ball-hawk everyone has been dying to see. I will be rooting for Mays to make some plays, but watching him with a very close eye at the same time.

Arrelious Benn
Illinois WR

Wow, 5 catches for 42 yards?? That’s actually Benn’s season totals after three games. I’ve seen him twice this year, but never saw him catch a pass. Please tell me what’s up with this guy, because I thought he was an early first round pick??

Well…We’re Movin on up

These are players I have been amazed by at some point of this young season. Feel free to inform me of players you feel should be on here, because I’m open ears at this point of the season.

Ryan Matthews
Fresno State- Running Back
NFL Comparison - Ryan Grant

At 220 pounds, Matthews is a tough runner, that is capable of cracking a huge run on any carry. I’ll admit I didn’t know who he was until I watched the Wisconsin game a few weeks back.

The nation's leading rusher has put up 592 yards in the first four games this season. He has five runs of 55 yards or more. In week three vs. Boise State, he ran the ball 19 times for 234 yards and 3 touchdowns (69, 68 and 60 yards). This last week, Matthews showed he is more than capable of handling the work load, with 40 offensive touches. He finished with 177 total yards of offense, verse a tough Cincinnati defense. Keep your eye on Matthews this season, because I don’t see him slowing down a bit. Fresno has a very weak remaining schedule, so Matthews should finish with some huge 2009 numbers and have a decision to make about his future.

Eric Norwood
South Carolina - Outside linebacker
NFL Comparison - LaMar Woodley

Norwood is a player I thought had the talent to leave early last year, but he has put himself into position to land a much fatter paycheck in the 2010 NFL draft. I decided to wait until the Ole Miss game to make my final evaluation of Norwood before I put him on this list. He came into the game with 4 sacks and a pick for six. He dominated the Ole Miss offense. He added two more sacks (6 on the year), partially blocked a punt, and commanded a double/triple team the rest of the game. Eric Berry is my favorite player in all of football, but I won’t be a bit surprised if Eric Norwood is the SEC player of the year. Big props to my man Mocking Dan…He gave everyone a huge heads up last week….This guy is a player.

Alterraun Verner My NFL Mock Draft- #32 to the Pats
UCLA- Cornerback
NFL Comparison - Asante Samuel

Yes, I’m still big on Verner. More than likely Verner is a zone guy. He reads routes well, and is the type of corner that likes to look at the QB in his back pedal. Verner has had 3 picks in the last two games, with a nice 24 yard average on returns. Corners like Verner don’t usual go in the first or second round, but I am one that feels this guy will perform well at the next level. I don’t feel this class is stacked at the position, so he has a chance to sneak up on draft boards.

Marshawn Gilyard
Cincinnati- Wide receiver
NFL Comparison- Eddie Royal

After the first four games, Gilyard has 32 catches, 442 yards and 6 touchdowns. He also has a punt return for a touchdown. He is a very explosive player that knows how to get open. I had him ranked higher than most before the 2009 season, but I'm even higher on him now, as continues to make plays every time I see him. I agree with Mocking Dan, that he probably isn’t a number one. I still think because of his return ability and the need for an explosive receiver, he will land in the first or very early second round. I think he will be an Eddie Royal/ Santonio Holmes type of player at the next level.

Keep an eye on

Montario Hardesty
Tennessee- Running back NFL Comparison- Julius Jones

Hardesty is a hard runner. He has made it very hard for prized freshman Bryce Brown to steal carries. No one in the country has run harder or done more for his team than Hardesty. Playing in an offense that has no chance of stretching the field, Hardesty’s hard nose running has put him seventh in the nation in yards (485). After battling knee injuries, this guy has proven he is worthy of being evaluated by NFL teams. If he continues to impress verse the tough SEC teams, Hardesty could be a big surprise when it comes to draft day evaluations.

DeAndre McDaniel
Clemson- Safety NFL Comparison- Antonie Bethea

Capable of covering a ton of ground, McDaniel caught my eye early in the Thursday night game vs. GTech week two. He plays the deep ball well, and has great hands for a defensive back. With four picks in 2009, McDaniel has shown he is more than just a ballhawk. He has 35 tackles in the first four games and shown he can deliver big time hits. The safety class in loaded in the 2010 draft, but if McDaniel continues his impressive play, he might leave early and be worth a high 2010 draft pick.

They Are Who We Thought They Were!!

Photo

More photos » by Brody Schmidt - AP

This list of players is players I feel I had a good awareness of (you probably did too).

Most are well know prospects that have first round talent.

These are prospects I would consider "Even", based on how they were being evaluated before the season started. The end of this week I will post my Up/Down lists.

Eric Berry- My Mock Draft- #2 to the Browns

Tennessee- Safety

NFL Comparisons- Ed Reed- Darren Sharper

The nation’s best defensive back has been impressive so far this season. Berry has racked up 21 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, and a pick in his last two games. He has lined up all over the field, and with opposing teams looking for him before every play, has still managed to be a big time player. There isn’t a defensive player in the nation that matches his mix of athleticism and football intelligence. There is a great chance he repeats as the SEC’s Defensive player of the year and lands in the top 5 in 2010’s NFL Draft.

Jahvid Best- My Mock Draft- #12 to the Chiefs

Cal - Running Back

NFL Comparisons- Steve Slaton- Chris Johnson

The electric homerun hitter has done nothing to hurt his Heisman campaign. With unbelievable explosion and great vision, Best has tallied up an impressive 471 yards of offense in his first three games. In my opinion, there is no running back in the nation that has the vision and explosion he does. There are backs that may challenge one or the other, but no one cuts and accelerates the way Best does. He will be the first back off the board in 2010.

As I have said before, if you haven’t seen this guy play, you really need to watch the next Cal game. The USC game should be very interesting.

Dez Bryant- My Mock draft- #9 to the Redskins

Oklahoma State- Wide Receiver

NFL Comparisons- Dwayne Bowe- Greg Jennings

Even though his team was overrated, Bryant has been anything but. Despite being doubled teamed most of the time, Bryant has caught 17 balls for 323 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also had an 82 yard punt return for a touchdown. There are going to be several teams in the top 10 in need of a wide receiver. Even if Michael Crabtree is in the 2010 draft class, my number one receiver is Bryant. He has more speed and athletic ability.

Explosive Junior Running Backs

These guys are quick and exciting, but have been extremely unimpressive at times. The inconsistent play has led me to believe these players should be 2nd and possibly 3rd round draft picks in 2010 (if they leave early).

C.J. Spiller

Clemson - Running back

NFL Comparison- Leon Washington

Spiller is a blazer and a threat to take it to the house each time he touches the ball. That being said, his longest run of the year is only 25 yards. With James Davis gone, most expected Spiller to light up the stats sheets each week. He hasn’t done that in the running game, but does have a 65 yard receiving touchdown, 77 yard punt return touchdown, and a 96 yard kick return touchdown. He is a dynamic player that shows up on highlight reels, but I want to see more from him in the running game if I’m going to leave him in my first round mock.

DeMarco Murray

Oklahoma - Running back

NFL Comparison- Jamaal Charles

Murray has shown some flashes of his elite ability this season, but I am still skeptical of his every down potential. He is a hard player to evaluate, due to his lack of touches. He has had two games with just 10 carriers, and one with 12. I was expecting to see him take over the BYU game when Bradford went down, but he finished the game with just 58 yards on the ground. I have to see more from him down the stretch.

I will be watching him very close during the Miami game Oct. 3.

Joe McKnight

USC - Running back

NFL Comparison- Reggie Bush

McKnight has been inconsistent since he started his college career at USC. At times he looks like a Heisman hopeful and other times looks like he is the least talented of USC’s loaded backfield. He has two 100 yard games this season and has a nice 7.4 yard per carry, but I wonder why he hasn’t separated himself from the others in the USC backfield. He came in as the next "Reggie Bush", but his production hasn’t even been comparable. So far he has shown flashes and some great highlights, but has yet to prove he is an every down back.

Noel Devine

West Virginia - Running back

NFL Comparison- Darren Sproles

Out of every back on this list, Devine has been the most consistent this season. He is a game changer with unbelievable acceleration. Devine has started the 2010 campaign very nicely with 320 yards and 5 touchdowns. He already has more touchdowns than last season, but West Virginia’s entire 2009 schedule is weak. It will be interesting to see if Devine can impress each week.

Graig Cooper

Miami - Running back

NFL Comparison- Jerious Norwood

Deservingly so, Copper has been overshadowed by Miami’s sophomore QB Jacory Harris. Copper splits carries with Javarris James, but has managed to make a nice impression both on offense and in the return game. In Miami’s big wins over FSU and Georgia Tech, Copper has averaged over 5 yards a carry, 11 yards a reception and 34 yards on kick returns. If Miami continues to rise in the polls, Copper will be a big reason why.

2010 NFL Mock Draft

Eric Berry is a big time playmaker, with the ability to deliver knock out blows

Eric Berry is a big time playmaker, with the ability to deliver knock out blows

1. Browns- Carlos Dunlap DE, Florida

Dunlap won’t be at the top of many Mocks, but neither was Mario Williams. The Browns need a pass rusher to complement Kamerion Wimbley and 6'6, 290-pound speed rushers don’t come around often. Dunlap is big enough to handle playing the 3-4 DE role, but athletic enough to provide an effective pass rush.

2. Buccaneers- Eric Berry S, Tennessee

Berry has everything scouts want to see in a safety. He has the athletic ability and coverage skills of a corner back, with the mindset and toughness of a middle linebacker. The Bucs need to rebuild the defense to have any chance of getting back to a playoff contender. Adding a safety that can do it all is a great place to start.

3. Rams- Sam Bradford QB, Oklahoma

Honestly I don’t think Bradford will go in the top three, but at this point of the year I have to have him there. Some team will probably take him higher than they should. I think come draft time he will be the second or third QB prospect on most boards.

4. Seahawks- Taylor Mays S, USC

Mays is a physical freak at 6’2’’, 230 pounds. He is a big time hitter that blows up receivers over the middle and does a great job in run support. Mays must become more of a ball-hawk in 2009 to prove he’s worth a top 5 selection. The Seahawks are going to have their pick and the Broncos first round pick in 2010.

5. Seahawks (From Denver)- Russell Okung OT, Oklahoma State

Okung is dominating both as a run and pass blocker. He may need to add some weight, but has the skills to be a very good left tackle in the NFL. The Seahawks need a lot on both sides of the ball, but with Walter Jones nearing the end of his career they need to address the offensive line early in 2010.

6. Bengals- Terrence Cody DT, Alabama

Cody will provide great size and strength. With so many teams switching to the 3-4 defensive, Cody could easily go higher than six. He could be like Tyson Jackson and provide a defensive line "need" for an NFL team earlier than expected. Either way Cody could be a force in a 3-4 or 4-3. The Bengals must upgrade their defensive line in 2010.

7. Raiders- The Fastest Guy at the combine.
A guy that would make sense is Brandon Spikes OLB, Florida

Spikes doesn’t just provide great athletic ability, he is a leader on the field too. He is the quarterback of the Gators' defense and leads by example. He sticks to his responsibilities and has a knack for making big plays. If he runs a great 40, then maybe the Raiders will take him.

8. Lions- Ciron Black OT, LSU

The Lions can’t be any worse than they were in 2009. I’m going to say I expect them to win about 4 to 5 games. They need to build a line that can protect their huge 2009 investment. Black is a tremendous pass blocker and would be an instant upgrade on the left side. With a talented young QB, RB, WR, and TE, the Lions might have a shot of having an explosive offense in the near future.

9. Redskins- Dez Bryant WR, Oklahoma State

The Redskins drafted two wide receivers early in the 2008 draft, hoping to find an explosive target opposite of Santana Moss. But both Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas are raw and injury prone. Antwaan Randle El is getting older and needs to be replaced in the near future. Bryant is a big, athletic receiver that knows how to get open and make people miss. He could be a big time target in coach Jim Zorn’s offensive scheme.

10. 49ers- Colt McCoy QB, Texas

McCoy is a much better NFL prospect than most evaluators give him credit for. He is a very accurate passer and is great at making plays outside the pocket. He should have a great senior season and do very well at the combine. He is an intelligent leader and just the type of player coach Mike Singletary wants running his offense.

11. Titans- Gerald McCoy DT, Okalahoma

The Titans will miss run stuffing specialist Albert Haynesworth even more than expected. McCoy probably won’t turn out to be a Defensive MVP caliber player, but he will provide the ability to rush the passer and stuff running lanes.

12. Jaguars- Arrelious Benn WR, Illinois

The Jaguars have been in desperate need of a playmaking wide out since Jimmy Smith. An aging Torry Holt should provide an improvement for the mean time, but the team could really use a big athletic target like Benn. He is an explosive player that might be a little raw, but has the talent to be a big time player at the next level.

13. Chiefs- Jahvid Best RB, Cal

Best is a blazer that can take it the distance every time he touches the ball. The Chiefs will probably look to dump the unhappy Larry Johnson either this year or next. Best is a reliable receiver out of the back field and would be a much needed offensive weapon for Todd Haley’s new offense.

14. Cowboys- Ndamukong Suh DT, Nebraska

Who really knows what Jerry Jones is going to do in the first round? He may go after a QB if Romo fails to win the 2010 Super Bowl. Suh is a massive force in the middle, and will command a double team all of 2009. He could be a big time force next to DeMarcus Ware.

15. Jets- Greg Hardy DE, Ole Miss

After realizing that 2008 first rounder Vernon Gholston won’t provide a consistent pass rush the NFL, the Jets will be forced to use another first round pick on a DE that is capable of getting to the QB. Hardy has proven he is a dominating force when healthy. Unlike Gholston, he has skills, not just muscles.

16. Packers- Jermaine Gresham TE, Oklahoma

Gresham would have been the first tight end off the board in 2009, so 2010 should be no different. He is an athletic tight end that understands what needs to be done to get open. He is a little raw in his route running, but one more year in college should fix that.

17. Dolphins- Rolondo McClain OLB, Alabama

When looking at the Dolphins roster it is surprisingly stacked at just about every position. I feel they could use a physical player across from Joey Porter. McClain is a solid tackler and shows ability to make plays in the back field.

18. Vikings- Tim Tebow QB, Florida

Why not stir up some more controversy in Minnesota? Even if Brett Farve ends up signing with the Vikings, he won’t be there long. Most talent evaluators think Tim Tebow is nothing more than a great college QB, but I think there are NFL teams that feel like me and think this guy is special. Yes he plays in a "college" system. And yes he has ridiculous running stats, but he is a very good passer and has an extremely underrated throwing arm. He isn’t a good fit for every NFL offense, but he could be very successful in an offense like Minnesota’s, that is based on handing off to Adrian Peterson and throwing short passes. He will rise on draft boards after another great college season and his eye popping numbers at the combine. This guy is going to go down as the best college player of all-time and he will succeed at the next level. If Josh Freeman landed in the first round, there is no question Tebow should.

19. Bills- C.J. Spiller RB, Clemson

Spiller is a dynamic player. He is a guy that needs the ball in creative ways, that get him in space and in one on one situations. He would be a great compliment to Marshawn Lynch. The Bills would also love to have him as the primary kick return, since Leodis McKelvin is going to be asked to be the teams number one corner soon. The Bills have playmakers, and added one more that can do a little of everything wouldn’t hurt.

20. Falcons- Sean Weatherspoon OLB, Missouri

Weatherspoon is a tackling machine and has the potential to be a big time playmaker in the NFL. The Falcons have a strong defense, and adding a player like Weatherspoon will make everyone else around him even better.

21. Texans- Myron Lewis CB, Vanderbilt

Much like 2009, the 2010 draft class isn’t loaded with elite talent at the cornerback position. Lewis is an interesting prospect at 6’2, 210 pounds. Some question if Lewis should stay at corner or move to safety. At corner he is a physical player that has the strength to overpower most receivers in man. The Texans have a dynamic offense, a strong defensive line and solid young linebacking corps. Now it’s time to address the secondary.

22. Cardinals- George Selvie DE, South Florida

Selvie’s stock has dropped drastically in two years, mainly due to his inability to produce because of double and triple teams. He is a very talented player and should still remain a first round prospect despite his production decline. The Cardinals could use a player that can rush the passer and with good players around him, Selvie should take advantage of being blocked by only one player.

23. Ravens- Marshawn Gilyard WR, Cincinnati

Gilyard is an athletic, sure handed receiver. He had a very good 2008 season, and should become more nationally recognized in 2009. The Ravens need to add another weapon on the outside. Derrick Mason is still productive, but his days are numbered.

24. 49ers (from Carolina) - Sergio Kindle OLB, Texas

Kindle could provide a strong side backer that has the ability to rush the passer. He is an interesting prospect that scouts would like to see play more consistent this season. There are some off the field issues that could easily knock him out of the first round.

25. Colts- Brandon LaFell WR, LSU

Many feel Anthony Gonzalez is going to be the one to fill the void left by Marvin Harrison. I feel Gonzalez is a good player that hasn’t come close to reaching his full potential, but needs to remain in the slot to best utilize his skills. That means Indy must find a player that can play on the outside, opposite of Reggie Wayne and take advantage of single coverage. LaFell is a good route runner and shows ability to gain yards after the catch.

26. Saints- Joe Haden CB, Florida

Haden is a great athlete that just needs to be a bit more physical. The Saints have added much needed help on the defensive side. Another solid young corner is exactly what this team needs.

27. Chargers- Jon Dwyer RB, Georgia Tech

I’m one that feels LT still has good mileage left in him, but if not Dwyer would be a great pick for San Diego. He has great speed for his 230 pound frame. He runs hard between the tackles and can go the distance anytime he touches the ball.

28. Broncos- Jevan Snead QB, Ole Miss

The Denver front office is acting like they have their franchise quarter back in Kyle Orton. It won’t take long for them to think otherwise once the season starts. Orton is a game manager, not a playmaker. Denver needs a strong armed signal caller that can get the ball to its explosive receiving combo. Snead showed good ability during 2008 season, and with a strong pro day and a good combine he could make a run to be the first QB off the board. If he falls, Denver will be happy to take him

29. Steelers- Trent Williams OT, Oklahoma

Williams must be more impressive than Phil Loadholt and Duke Robinson were in their final year and combine to land in the first round. He is a very good player, but benefits greatly from playing in Oklahoma’s spread, where the linemen often have wide splits. The Steelers can pretty much draft any position they want, and the player will more than likely be a back-up for the first few years.

30. Eagles- Jerry Hughes DE, TCU

The Eagles added some weapons for Donovan McNabb in the 2009 draft, so I expect them to go defense first in the 2010 draft. Hughes is a gifted pass rusher that creates a lot of havoc in the backfield for opposing teams.

31. Giants- Trevard Lindley CB, Kentucky

The Giants are another team that is hard to pick a position of need. They are usually in a position to pick the best player available. Lindley is very quick and athletic. He is the first corner on most evaluator’s boards, but I like more complete corners. Lindley is not a very strong tackler and will be run at all game if he doesn’t become more physical in run support.

32. Patriots- Alterraun Verner CB, UCLA

I feel safe saying you won’t see Verner on any other first round mock drafts. I like his blend of physical play and athletic ability. He is best fitted for a zone scheme. He isn’t blazing fast, but has great instincts and quickness. The Pats drafted Darius Butler, an extremely athletic corner in 2009. Butler should be a very good player for the Pats, but they will need a replacement for Shawn Springs at the end of the year.
