Field Gulls 11/6 College football thread

I didn't see one up, so here we go.

Washington travels to Oregon without Locker, pretty sure Sportsbook has Oregon favored by...55? Well at least the Seahawks aren't the biggest Seattle area underdog this week, hopefully Washington can shock the world. The other big pac-10 game is Arizona vs Stanford, Arizona travels to Oregon in a few weeks for another big game.

There are plenty of other big games as well, like Auburn vs. Chattanooga....uh, yeah.

Go Huskies?

Can't think of a better time to post it. Easily one of my top 5 Seahawks wins of all time.

Field Gulls Potential LEO for 2011.

Chris Clemons is playing well, but I think most people agree that the team should be looking at options for the LEO position in the draft and through free agency. I was thinking of players that would be a perfect fit for the LEO position and one guy with tremendous potential came to my mind:

Manny Lawson

Lawson is free agent (although he might be a restricted free agent) and has already asked the 49ers for a new contract, so he could also be a trade candidate. Lawson's potential has always excited me and reminded me of Julian Peterson. I know Lawson has been a bit of a disappointment in San Fran, but if he came to Seattle and was just asked to simply rush the passer I wonder if he could thrive.

Lawson was a name that caught my eye and seems like a good fit for the LEO, so I figured I'd throw this out there for discussion. Thoughts?

It's early in the season so things can change quickly, but the Chargers special teams DVOA is currently dead last in the NFL at -18.6% and the Seahawks rank 3rd at 9.3%. In a game that seems somewhat evenly matched this could be a big wildcard for the game.

Tyler Polumbus seems to be the favorite to start in place of Okung on Sunday.

Thought he looked good in the pre-season, seems like it would be a good pick-up.

Hope some of you remember this game from 1996. I haven't been to a Seahawks game in Seattle since this one.

From a Q and A with Eric Williams.

Q: Jimmy Clausen talked about how it down to you guys and Notre Dame when he came out, was it that close?

Carroll: "Sure, it really was. It was either/or. I’ve told these guys, I watched Jimmy throw since he was a ninth grader. That’s how far back I go, he was 13 when I watching that guy play, and I watched all of his film every year and know the family and all of that and recruited him all the way through the process. And it came down to – he won’t say it – but Mark Sanchez or Notre Dame. And so he made a great choice for himself and did the best he could with it."

Danny O'Neil has an interesting article on something Tim Ruskell said to Jim Mora after Mora came out and supported Holmgren returning to Seattle.

I gotta say, this seems pretty low by Ruskell if it's true.

Football Outsiders has the Sehawks playoff odds at 0.1%. The Hawks aren't dead yet!

Couldn't find it anywhere else, but Seahawks Addicts is reporting Sims will miss 3-6. Seahawks Addicts usually does a good job with posting information so I'm assuming this is accurate.

Field Gulls Is Plack gone?

http://rodpedersen.blogspot.com/

Saw this link on Seahawks addicts, not sure how credible it is, but it's there none the less.

Not sure what to make of this, Plack didn't look very good on Sunday but that might have not been his fault.  Plack was awesome in 2006, struggled in 2007 and was hurt at the start of 2008, so I think it is possible the Hawks have decided to move on.

What is everyone's take on this?

Field Gulls 2008 DVOA Projections are out

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/2008/09/03/ramblings/dvoa-ratings/6516/

Here are the DVOA projections for 2008 from Football Outsiders.  I am a little surprised to see us with the projected 6th best offense and 12th defense.  I imagine our 3rd and 1 failures have a lot to do with the rebound in offense along with the solid off-season additions.

For those who don't want to click the link for whatever reason the Hawks projected DVOA for offense is 16.1% and -3.0%*  for defense.  Special teams checks in at 17th in the league with a 0.2%

* a minus for defense is a positive not a negative.

Lookout Landing LL on Yahoo! Sports

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/The-Nail-in-the-Coffin-Your-2008-Seattle-Marine;_ylt=AlXcSNB6l85tE7ruCtieAxQRvLYF?urn=mlb,104148

So according to this article the M's are the 1st team officially eliminated from the playoffs!, which means we'll get to here the front office talk about how we were in it until the end of August.

This article also contains a quote from LL.  It's probably not a big deal, but I thought it was pretty cool to see LL getting some attention by the national media.

For some reason being the 1st team eliminated makes everything worth it.

Lookout Landing Just go away Carlos

http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/mariners/2008/08/ms_lose_a_yawner.html

I don't think there is anything to say.  You're the one with the 4-13 record and an ERA close to 6.

I understand that Silva is frustrated and maybe what he's saying is true, but it sounds pretty ridiculous after a game in which you gave up 5 runs.

This was my favorite quote from Silva: "Maybe Chief has to go and grab somebody from his neck and throw him into the wall and something's going to change,'' he said. "I'm very close to doing that, so write that down.''

Again, you're the one with the  5.93 ERA, someone should probably throw you into the wall.

Go away Carlos, you can keep the money.

Field Gulls Some good news in Hawks Land

Holmgren was on KJR this morning (at least that's what I hear through the grapevine and seahawks addicts, since I don't live in Seattle.)  Holmgren mentioned some things that are very encouraging for the Hawks in 2009.

1.  Rob Sims is the likely starter at RG.  I know John and most of us have been Sims supporters.

2. The Hawks will be going with a running back by committee!  No running back will get more than 25 carries a game and Morris should factor in heavily.  Sounds like Morris will be a hawk next season!  I personally expect Duckett to fill Weaver's role before Strong got hurt last season.

3.  sounds like Lawrence Jackson (LoJack) will be the starting DE with Tapp coming in as a situational pass-rusher.  This is probably for the better as Jackson is probably a more complete DE.  Tapp seemed to struggle down the stretch last year and should benefit from this.
