George McDonald Hired as WR Coach @ "the u"
"Former Cleveland Browns wide receiver coach George McDonald has been added to the UM staff by Al Golden according to sources close to the program.
McDonald, a native of Buena Park, Calif, spent the last two seasons with the Browns. During his stint at Western Michigan, he was instrumental in recruiting South Florida.
He was a four-year letterman as a receiver at Illinois (1995-98) where he finished with 59 receptions and 589 yards.
Coaching Background:
2000 Ball State, graduate assistant
2001 Bucknell, wide receivers coach
2001-03 Northern Illinois, wide receivers coach
2004 Stanford, tight ends coach
2005-06 Western Michigan, wide receivers coach
2007-08 University of Minnesota, wide receivers coach
In 2008, McDonald played an integral role in helping junior wide receiver Eric Decker to his most productive season as a Gopher, as he set a school record with 84 receptions, eclipsed the 1,000-yard receiving mark (1,074) and earned a first-team All-Big Ten bid. Before arriving at Minnesota, McDonald spent the 2005-06 seasons at Western Michigan, where he worked with current Green Bay Packers receiver Greg Jennings. In McDonald’s first season with the Broncos, Jennings was named 2005 MAC Offensive Player of the Year, MAC co-MVP (Vern Smith Award) and was a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist after setting program records for career receptions, receiving touchdowns and all-purpose yards. Prior to his stint with the Broncos, McDonald served as tight ends coach at Stanford (2004) and wide receivers coach at Northern Illinois (2001-03). While at Stanford, McDonald tutored tight end Alex Smith, who was a finalist for the Mackey Award as the nation’s top tight end that year and went on to be drafted by Tampa Bay in the third round of the 2005 Draft. McDonald has also gained valuable NFL experience from minority internships during training camps with the New York Jets (2004, 2006), Chicago (2005) and Tampa Bay (2007). "

Ponder Held from Practice til the 26'th
Per AC:
"Back from the frozen tundra of the Al Dunlap practice fields at Florida State. News of the day: Christian Ponder will be held out of practice until Dec. 26, Jimbo Fisher said. The plan is to allow Ponder plenty of time to rest his injured elbow. Fisher said he still expects Ponder to play in the Dec. 31 Chick-fil-A Bowl against South Carolina."
"Ponder had surgery to take out scar tissue out of his elbow area. But it's not an elbow injury, per se. Elbow is fine structurally. "
A Look at Jacob Coker in Action
"Coker, rated a three-star by both Rivals and Scout, had a chance to show off his skills Saturday in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game. Check out some game highlights here, starting with a 39-yard TD strike by Coker (starts at the 30-second mark).
Sharing time with another QB (Phillip Rivers brother, Stephen), Coker was 8 of 18 for 79 yards with two INTs. Billed as a pro-style QB, Coker showed some running chops, too, gaining 27 yards on six carries.
Rivals had this to say about his performance in the game:
"Coker...displayed excellent touch on passes downfield and across the middle. He has a refined, quick throwing motion that allows him to get rid of tight spirals that are well-placed to his receivers. His tall, long frame allows him to easily gaze over his offensive line. He has prototypical size and a frame to add significant weight when he gets to Florida State."
Did Urban's Felons Trash the Visitor's Locker Room @ Doak?
Per a status update by The Florida State University's Facebook page:
"Breaking News: Multiple outlets have reported that the Florida Gators' football team trashed the visiting locker after losing to FSU. Incidents include ripping off soap dispensers, throwing and damaging chairs.
Looks like in bad times and cold weather, the Gators don't stick together.
Go Noles! Now and Forever!"

Dinich Predicts FSU to have Best Offense in the ACC
This isn't a surprise to us, but it's nice to see ESPN recognizing that we have a special unit coming back in the fall.
Fisher Making Progress on Indoor Practice Facility
Good news from AC. Fisher's comments sound promising. The cost of the facility has been scaled back from $25 million to $16 million. Being in the lightning capital of the world, Fisher says that this matter "affects winning and losing." Fisher also confirmed that the facility would be used exclusively for football.
Vote for Christian Ponder on ESPN!
As of 6/28 @ 4:20 CT, CP7 sits at #7. Let's help give him a boost and hopefully break the top 5!
Fla State Approves Athletic Budget of $55 Million for 2010-2011
Hate to be a negative nancy, but compare that to UF's $96.4 million budget.

Mark Whipple to USF?
Would be a HUGE loss for Miami and a good pickup for USF.
Replay of the Gator Bowl.
I missed the Gator Bowl due to travel and was wandering if anyone knows of a website where I might be able to catch a replay. I tried ESPN360 with no luck. thx!
Ponder: An Elite Quarterback
Earlier this season, I argued that Christian Ponder had the potential to be an elite level quarterback based on his first year performance. I compared his 1'st year numbers to the 1'st year numbers of two widely accepted elite quarterbacks (Colt McCoy '06 and Sam Bradford '07). Ponder played like a warrior in the first nine games of our season. He made Seminole Nation so very proud during an otherwise dark chapter in Seminole history. His dazzling season at the healm of Jimbo Fisher's high octane offense was tragically cut short as he delivered a bone-jarring tackle (with broken ribs) to Clemson's DeAndre McDaniel and suffered a season ending injury. Ponder was considered by many to be a dark horse in the race to the Heisman. Based on data from his 2009 performance, I will prove that Christian Ponder is an elite quarterback just as deserving of the title "Best Collegiate Football Player" as the other Heisman candidates.
In this analysis, I compared Ponder's '09 performance to the performance of the 3 Heisman finalist QBs:
- Timmy Tearsbow
- Colt McCoy
- Kellen Moore
Out of curiosity, I included EJ Manuel in there as well (don't read too much into his results, as 3 observations provide little statistical confidence).
The metric I will use to gauge the QB's performance is the ESPN calculated passer rating. Below is a box plot of these 5 QB's passer ratings:
Here's a little stats 101 review (copied from my previous post) of what this box plot is showing: This box plot is a visual representation of the passer ratings these QBs posted during the 2009 season. The top of the box is the third quartile (Q3, meaning 75% of the observations are less than or equal to this value). The middle line is the median (meaning that 50% of the observations are less than or equal to this value.) The bottom of the box is the first quartile (Q1, meaning that 25% of the observations are less than or equal to this value). The whiskers extend to the upper and lower limits.
Much more inside. Continue reading!

Saw this link posted over on HD's blog. Thought I'd share.
In an Ideal World, pt 2
Bobby Bowden was not forced out of FSU. He was not even forced out of FSU football, for that matter. He was forced out of a head coaching position that he was unarguably not qualified for. There is a big difference there. FSU has not turned its back on the old man. In my opinion, FSU has opened a door for him. FSU has given Bobby the option to continue to benefit the program in a profound way that Bobby is solely capable of doing.
Bobby has not left the program in a stable, capable condition. He has left it in quite the opposite. Apart from our blatantly unsatisfactory football play (at least on defense), there are other areas of the program bleeding. Long time boosters that donated big bucks have become alienated and closed their pocket books. Attendance at home games is at record lows. Seminole nation is sharply divided in a time when we need to unite.
Jimbo Fisher always says, “Control what you can control.” It is obvious that Bowden lost control over his team’s football play a long time ago. However, Bowden is still Bowden, and he still can control a lot. It is my opinion that arguably the most important part of his legacy that he leaves at FSU is yet to be made.

USF Rematch in the Meineke Car Care Bowl?
What are the chances of a rematch with USF in the Meineke Car Care Bowl? What are your thoughts on this? Personally, I'd love to see our offense get another shot against the USF defense, but I don't know if I could stomach losing to them again.... Still though, the chance at regaining bragging rights against Bulls fans would be pretty cool.
Has Bowden Announced His Return?
Here on AC's Chopping Block, someone asked if it was true if BB is returning next year. Since my panick alarm is going off, I thought I'd post this to see if anyone from TN has heard this rumor. Any word about this?!?
Eye Catching Quote from Bobby
Q: Going into this game, North Carolina was No. 1 in the country in pass defense. Were you surprised that you were able to pass for that many yards against them?
Bowden: There's no doubt about it. I would think that anybody that knows anything about football, and knows anything about the conference, knows anything about North Carolina's defense, would be completely surprised. When we go out there to play them and we've got the No. 1 offense in the conference and they've got the No. 1 defense, we're looking at film of them and we're saying, "How in the world are we ever going to be consistent enough to get some points on this team?" Because they're so good. The first half is what you'd expect. The second half, gosh, you can't hardly imagine that much success.
So basically, Bobby didn't have faith in this offense, and expected performance like the 1'st half. Unbelievable.
No wait- believable.
CTC Speaks out Regarding Rumors
Chucky "the Chest" Amato denies the rumors that he and Jimbo got into a fight. I tend to believe that this is true.. However, there is another quote in here that I personally have trouble believing. CTC asserts that he and Jimbo are good friends. They might be "work acquaintance" type friends, but I don't believe they get their families together for the 4'th of July bbq... To me, this is CTC trying to gather public sympathy and save his reputation cause he knows he is about to get canned.
In an Ideal World
The current state of affairs in Tallahassee is far from ideal. Here are the issues that we are all too familiar with:
- We have a "has-been" head coach that is selfishly sucking our university dry and making us thank him for it in the form of $2.5 million a year
- We have a push-over president that has permanently affixed his @$$ kissing boots for our "has-been" head coach. Rather than growing a pair and doing what needs to be done for the good of the university that he presides over, he is retiring and taking the easy way out of a sticky situation. BE A MAN FOR GOODNESS SAKE, TK.
- We have an academic AND athletic reputation that is constantly being dragged through the mud, thanks to our infamous cheating scandal. Rather than focusing on the good things at FSU (a brand new med school, 3 Rhodes Scholarships in 4 years - one of which was a D-1 football player, rising academic rankings - we are now in the top 50 for public universities, etc.), we are constantly being reminded of a pretty major ****-up. And so is a nation of prospective students, prospective athletes, prospective coaches, and prospective professors.
- We have a 2-2 start to our 2009 season. Many of us easily expected us to be 4-0 in the preseason, myself included.
- We have 3 recent decommits from our recruiting class. Frankly this number will likely continue to grow in upcoming months.
- We have no accountability on our football team. You better believe that this is the reason that we are inconsistent on the field. If someone isn't doing there job (players and/or coaches), they are not held accountable.
- We have a capable football team. We don't have a stable/consistent football team. We have half of a coaching staff preaching discipline and consistency.
As you read through all of these negative circumstances, what is the common denominator? Bobby Bowden.

Ponder: An Elite Quarterback?
Recent debate has taken place on this web site about the caliber of Christian Ponder as a quarterback. Some argue that he already possesses the talent to be an elite level player, similar to a Colt McCoy or a Sam Bradford. Others argue that he is developing this talent and just needs more experience to hone his skills. Still others decide not to drink this delicous Kool-Aid and argue that he will never rise to the elite level.
A guy I work with has a little saying. He says, "Without data you are just another person with an opinion." I know everyone has their own opinion about CP7. Despite a somewhat rocky start to our season, I think most would agree that our man under center is a bad @$$. As my friend at work would remind me, without data to prove this claim, I'd be just another guy with an opinion. In this post, I will make a data driven decision regarding the legitimacy of Ponder stepping up to the elite ranks and becoming a Heisman contender.

Once I have comparable ADEs, I will be able to run a linear regression and show a plot like the one above.
Keep in mind that the one above is not valid, as Ponder's ADEs are MUCH lower than McCoy's and Bradford's.
FSUncensored:
I found the ADEs on this website:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pkpk-Zkv_WsI4WkzBnfBKaw&gid=3
These seem to be calculated a little differently than the ones you showed me here:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pkpk-Zkv_WsK8yPxzZcyiXw&gid=0
If the image URL above posted correctly, you can see the box plot I put together. Ponder's opponents ADEs are negative, which is never the case for McCoy's or Bradfords'.
I know Ponder faces harder competition, but this is a bit extreme ;)
Do you (or anyone else) know where I can get comparable ADEs from 06, 07, and 08 so I can compate Ponder's first year to McCoy's and Bradford's first years.
BC Defensive Preview for the Statistically Inclined
For those of you that have read some of my previous comments, you know I'm a big stats nerd. Stats can be a powerful tool for making inference and drawing meaningful conclusions about the future. That being said, in this article we will use historical data of Boston College's defense from last year to make a prediction about how our offense will do this year.
In this article we will conduct a multiple linear regression analysis to come up with a statistical model to predict how many points our offense should have scored last season. Based on trends we have seen in the off season, we will also use the model to predict how many points we may score this season.
