Law on Font , and Feliz

form his espn blog

  • Neftali Feliz was part of Texas' substantial haul from Atlanta for Mark Teixeira last summer, but was pitching in the Appalachian League at the time and didn't get much attention when the trade occurred. Feliz has an electric arm, throwing 92-97 mph fastballs without much effort. He has a reliever's delivery, almost slinging the ball from a three-quarter to low three-quarter slot, but takes a nice long stride and explodes forward off the mound. His best secondary pitch is his changeup; he turns the pitch over well and will throw the pitch away to left-handed hitters. His slider is short with a little tilt, but he has little feel for the pitch and has trouble with it backing up on him.
  • Feliz was just the opening act for the star attraction, 17-year-old Wilmer Font. Font checks in at 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds and attracted a crowd of pitchers behind the plate to watch him work. Fitting for a big guy, he has a big fastball, hitting 98 and working mostly at 93-96 mph, with good downhill plane, and he shows good command for a 17-year-old with just 45 innings of U.S. experience. There's an obvious plan to work down in the zone, and he can execute on it well given his age and history. His secondary stuff is still raw; his slider was a little ahead of his changeup, with good tilt but a long, loose break. His arm action is a little long in back, but his delivery is otherwise solid, and his velocity is very easy.

    keith law on beaven yesterday

keith law has a blog post with some rangers notes up....

  • Blake Beavan threw two innings for Texas' low-A club. He's softened his delivery slightly over where it was last spring, when he would stick his landing like a figure skater; his front leg is still stiff, just less so. He came at hitters with an 87-91 mph fastball with very good run to his glove side, and he flashed good tilt on an inconsistent slider. There's still a lot of effort in his delivery -- he gets his velocity mostly from his arm, and not enough from his lower half -- which he's going to have to reduce to remain a starter.
  • Eighteen-year-old Wilfredo Boscan threw the last inning for the Rangers' low-A club, showing an 89-92 mph fastball and a curveball with some sharpness to its break. He's very skinny, listed at 6-foot-2 and 160 pounds, and has plenty of physical projection. He'll make his U.S. debut this year after pitching in the Dominican Summer League in 2007.

Keith Law on Rangers Pitching Prospects

In the chat that is going on right now, this was posted at the begining. Interesting stuff. It is the insider portion though

John (Dallas): Since nobody cares about the Rangers, it can be slightly more difficult to find info on their pitching prospects without shelling out thirty bucks a year to baseball sites. I was wondering if I could get your takes on the ML potential of guys like McCarthy, Gabbard, Hurley, Volquez, and since the target date for legitimacy seems to be 2010, guys a couple of years away like Kiker, Beavan, and Michael Main. Thanks for your input on the most overlooked perennially suffering club in the Major League.

Keith Law: (1:06 PM ET ) Gabbard's a 4A guy. Volquez has a decent arm but little feel; he's young but I have a bad feeling about him. Hurley's a #2/3 type, fastball's a little true, but he's moved very quickly. I won't give up on McCarthy yet - guy had plus command, then goes to Texas and has minus command? Unless he's hurt, I'm betting on a bounceback. Kiker and Main are possible 1/2 types, Beavan's a 2/3, word is they've cleaned his delivery up a little bit so there's not so much recoil in it. Kiker's curveball is one of the best in the minors. So things are looking up, but it's going to take another two to three years before the Rangers can harvest this talent.

Yanks try hardest to stick it to Rangers

the Yanks have decided they might negotiate a contract extension with A-Rod during this season, as long as he doesnt opt out after the year.  This way they can just tack an extension on the existing contract and keep him and the Rangers 81 million.  F him F them.

    International free agent question

    http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view.bg?articleid=1009724

just got done reading this article about the red sox signing carlos almanzars' son.  How does the process work with these guys?? Is it just a free for all and whomever throws the most money at these guys signs them, or are there some sort of rules or priority given to bad teams to sign these guys.  it just makes me so damn happy to know that the red sox have gotten another top prospect, although i would assume that a 16 year old kid is a rather unknown. Anyway.... VOMIT

    The Swan is a Spare

whys is he here, seriously the guy has done nothing this year, his ERA in AAA is 84.5, he has no business being in a close game, he has to be on this roster for cultural balance, there is no other answer   WTF

    Thirsty thursday at TBIA

does anyone know if the whole thirsty thursday $3 miller lites was a one time thing, or if this is the most genius marketing ploy to make our current teams play acceptable to anebriated fans???  im all for it and i think the price of beer should be correlated to the overall record of the team.

    Keith laws latest

this is what Keith law had to say in his blog yesterday about the most important day that this organization has seen maybe ever..

    * The Rangers' top options at No. 17 are now Beavan and Tim Alderson. Wherever Beavan goes, he'll probably command top-10 money.

Beaven or Harvey sounds good, it would be nice to have them both there and have our choice of the two...
