W2W MMA: November
Hopefully your stomachs have recovered from binging on candy because its NOVEMBER!! That means Turkey, family parades possibly a football game and the UFC making its debut on network tv via the Fox network.
October had a great start to it for the UFC their show on Versus was a success for the company and bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz. Than you had the end to the trilogy between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard in a what was a solid card. But down the final stretch things have taken a bad turn, UFC 136 is reportedly doing 250k buys which is below the normal basement of 300k and kind of sad since it was a pretty good card.Than George St. Pierre injured his knee just weeks before his title defense against Carlos Condit. This is another hit to the UFCs Pay Per View buys since St. Pierre is one of the two huge draws the UFC has. Bellator has finished up the semi finals of their Season 5 tournaments. At welterweight Ben Saunders will face Diego Lima, batamweight will see Alexis Vila take on Eduardo Dantas, middleweight sees Alexander Shlemnko fight Vitor Vianna and two heavyweights will make it to the finals.
11/5/2011 - UFC 138 - Leben vs. Munoz Spike possible Facebook
The UFC starts off the month with one of three shows this one going down in merry old England. The main event features a decent middleweight bout between Chris Leben and Mark Munoz. A win will most likely get people to talk about how they are contenders but either fighter is at least two fights away. Brad Pickett finally makes his UFC debut taking on bantamweight prospect Renan Barao, Picketts slick boxing should make this one fun. Also on the card Thiago Alves takes on promotional new comer Papy Abedi.
11/5/2011 - ProElite - Big Guns HDNet
I'm probably going insane but this heavyweight focused card has me interested. Pro Elite looks to put on their second card since returning from the dead by starting a heavyweight tournament of mostly unknown big men. That is a apt description since the only fighter in the tournament I recognize is Mark Ellis who was a top wrestler in college. The card is headlined by two former UFC heavyweight champions Tim Sylvia taking on Andreas Kraniotakes after his original opponent Pedro Rizzo fell out due to injury and Andrei Arlovkski taking on the well traveled Travis Fulton. Its by no means the greatest card or that relevant but it could be fun.
11/12/2011 - UFC - UFC on Fox 1 FOX Facebook
The UFC finally makes its debut on national TV with its new television partner Fox. The partnership doesn't start till January but we get a little sample by them putting on UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velazques taking on Junior Dos Santos! This is the Fedor CroCop of our time for reference . Best of all its FREE. Only one fight is guaranteed to be aired, Cain Velazques vs Junior Dos Santos for the heavyweight title but this has a good undercard mainly due to Clay Guida taking on Ben Henderson in what will most likely be a #1 conteders match. Gudia Henderson just sounds fun. If you haven't figured out that the UFC broadcast prelims on Facebook now is a time to watch so you can see this fight.
11/12/2011 - BFC - Bellator Fighting Championships 57 MTV 2 Spike.com
Currently the welterweight finals between Ben Saunders and Douglas Lima are scheduled Bellator will most likely fill out the undercard in the coming weeks.
11/18/2011 - Strikeforce - Challengers 20 Showtime
This is most likely the final Challengers card since Strikeforce will be dead by February (hallelujah) still Julia Budd vs. Ronda Rousey is a good fight.
11/19/2011 - BFC - Bellator Fighting Championships 58 MTV 2 Spike.com
This is probably the best card Bellator has booked. You have Eddie Alveraz their best fighter defending his title against recent lightweight tournament winner Michael Chandler. The finals of the middleweight tournament Alexander "The Second to Last Emperor" Shlemenko takes on Vitor Vianna. The winner or that fight will take on Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard who will be in action that night against Trevor Prangley in a "Superfight". Featherweight Summer Series tournament runner up Marlon Sandro will take on Rafael Dias with the winner most likely getting into the Season 6 featherweight tournament.
11/19/2011 - UFC 139 - Shogun vs. Hendo PPV Spike Facebook
Every time Dan Henderson leaves the UFC he goes and becomes champion somewhere else and than Dana White buys the promotion to get him back. That's the joke at any way. Hendo returns to the UFC for the first time since his KO of the Year (2009) over Michael Bisping by taking on former UFC and Pride champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. If Henderson wins here he would be a win away from a title fight or just get it if something ill befalls Rashad Evans, who has next after Jon Jones and Lyoto Machida fight. At bantamweight Urijah Faber will battle Brian Bowles for what will most likely be the next shot at Domincik Cruz. Cung Le also makes his UFC debut against Wanderli Silva who is stepping in for Vitor Belfort.Kyle Kingsbury and Stephan Bonnar will meet at light heavyweight which could be a fun slug fest.
11/20/2011 - M-1 Global -Fedor vs. Monson
Its been a rough couple of fights for Fedor Emelianenko, once seen as a unbeatable force at heavyweight he has lost his last three fights and now returns to his mother Russia fighting under the M-1 Banner, which he owns part of. Jeff Monson also lost in his last fight and a win over Fedor is still kind of a big deal. Showtime isn't carrying the card as of yet so it will most likely be PPV. With it being in Russia though depending on time zones it could technically be happening on the 19th which would conflict with the UFC and Bellator cards which are more relevant and most likely better.
11/26/2011 - BFC - Bellator Fighting Championships 59 MTV2
The finals of the Season 5 Bantamweight tournament will happen. Alexis Vila and Eduardo Dantas will battle it out for a shot at current Bellator Bantamweight Zack Makovsky. Vila has some crazy power and phenominal wrestling while Dantas brings the kickboxing. The heavyweight finals will take place here they will be determined at Bellator56. Inagural Bellator welterweight tournament winner and champion Lyman Good will take on Michael Costa in a tournament qualifier. Also Kurt Pellegrino will fight Season 4 lightweight tournament runner up Patricky Freire
Fights to Watch
Cain Velasquez vs Junior Dos Santos- UFC on Fox
Clay Guida vs Ben Henderson –UFC on Fox
Brad Pickett vs Renan Barao - UFC 138
Eddie Alveraz vs Michael Chandler – Bellator
Would you rather with GSP
This is the one of the many questions coming out of UFC 129. Would you rather have Zuffa work some legal magic and possible blood magic and put together George St-Pierre Nick Diaz. Or would you rather see them get GSP to move up a weight class and take on fellow pound for pound fighter Anderson Silva? Both of these options aren't going to be easy to make.
St-Pierre continually states that he doesn't just want to be the best Welterweight of all time he wants to be the best Mixed Martial Artist of all time. No reason he can't be both. Nick Diaz is the only remaining credible challenger in the division. Fighters like Anthony Johnson and Carlos Condit still need a couple more top 10 wins to really challenge for the title. With Zuffa planning out the next 6 months of UFC's that could be a while. Not to mention that Fitch and Penn still have unfinished business. All of this makes Diaz the next logical conclusion even if it isn't attainable tomorrow.
Being the best eva though means taking on all challengers. Even after he clears out his division fans are still going to be salivating at the idea of GSP taking on the Spider. To do this St-Pierre would have to go and put on more muscle mass to be effective at the new weight. This would take time and dedication to a whole new division. All of this for one big fight.
A move up to middleweight would bring multiple new match ups after the Silva fight. Seeing St-Pierre test his wrestling against Chael Sonnen or Okami. St-Pierre taking on Damian Maia would be another challenge for St-Pierre though we have seen how both Silva and St-Pierre deal with grapplers.
St-Pierre and his brains are going to have to make a decision.
You will see Shields back on CBS
There has been some out cry that the Shields Mayhem fight was boring last Saturday, Now that is a subjective matter I personally was entertained by it. I had it as my Fight of the Night not Fedor Rogers it was really just a forgone conclusion of who would win that one. The fight went the distance a full 25 minutes to a decision. This isn't because Shields cant sub guys his last 5 fights not including the one with Mayhem 4 ended with a Submission and one even via TKO. The Way the fight went down is completely on Millers shoulders due to his poor takedown defense and his inability to make it into a brawl. If he had been able to stop the take downs and make this a striking contest he would of most likely won.
Strikeforce will put him back on CBS for 2 reasons. Shields is one of the few top 10 fighters they have that isn't in there heavy weight division. With news that Fedor will be out up to 4-6 months due to injuries Strikeforce has lost one of there possible top draws. Now Shields cant pull a whole show by himself, he has just barley more personality then Bobby Lashley. He is though one of there few active Champions and title fights sell better then non title fights unless its a big match up. If he is paired up with one of there other guaranteed draws in Gina Carano they could pull some decent numbers,
This would also force CBS and Strikeforce, who I'm sure had some input into how the marketing was done to change up how the built the fight. For Saturdays show it was all FEDOR FEDOR FEDOR or FEDOR ROGERS , my family who had scene commercials and watched it with me were amazed that there were more fights, they aren't the biggest MMA fans though either. Now I hate comparing Strikeforce to UFC since its just not a fair comparison. They are no where near the same level of exposure and recognition . You don't hear people calling MMA Strikeforce do you? Where they can learn from UFC though is that it has the best hype machine across the board from MMA to Pro Wrestling. They don't just try to sell a show on 1 guy or 1 fight now it does help to have that 1 guy and 1 fight . In the adds they also say "and" as a example Rothwell Cain . UFC promotes the card now not the entire card but they do promote more then just 1 fight. This is something CBS and Strikeforce will have to correct.
If Strikeforce were able to pair Shields up with either Mousasi and have them both defend there titles on the same show hopefully they could pull better then Elite XC's second show as a bare minimum. It wouldn't pull Kimbo numbers but it should get them to there next show.
I like Kimbo and all he seems very likeable and down to earth on TUF . What does it say for your sport though when he is your most watched fighter and not Fedor, Brock, GSP, BJ, the Spider?
Strikeforce and Fedor come off looking good on CBS
Strikeforce made its debut on network TV last night. Strikeforce and Rogers both though came out of last nights event looking good and professional . Strikeforce had a lot on the line last night and hopefully the ratings pulled through , I don't know the ratings at the moment.
The fights and presentation were exciting . There commentary team though i wish would of had the Fight Professor Stephen Quadros , he did the commentary for the Challengers show last night. Mayhems entrance came off very loud and Mayhem like . He will defiantly be back on the CBS cards the crowd liked him and he is most likely the most well known fighter on the whole card to casual fans. The fans also were relatively in to the Shields Mayhem fight, which I was very impressed with since it always seems like people don't like the ground game, and ground fights. This was the best fight of the night to me.
Fedor Rogers went better then I expected. I didn't expect it to make it out of the round and look what happened. Fedor looked more human then he has in his past couple of fights . Fedor was getting Ground and Pounded, which I was very afraid that they may have stopped it if the ref had been different. . Rogers though bloodied Fedor early on which was good. Even in this loss i think Rogers came out looking better and more marketable . They can show him as hungry now to get back to his winning ways. I hope there is more cards of CBS because this helped me expose more of my family to it and to most likely helped expose more people to MMA.
