Kiper's big board (subscription article)
Again, it's never too early for draft talk! Kiper has three Tide players in his top 25 -- Kirkpatrick 9th, Richardson 13th, and Upshaw 25th. He also has in another article Barron and Hightower just missing the cut.
Because it's never too early for a mock draft
Since it's an Insider article, I'll share: Todd McShay has Dre Kirkpatrick going 11th, Trent Richardson 12th, and Robert Lester (really?) 27th. Richardson and Lester would be the top players at their positions.

FO: SEC is doooooooooooomed!
"As for Alabama, the Tide's third string is probably a top five team right now. I thought they might come back to the pack slightly, after such a heavy loss of stud defenders, but they look far better than anyone else after two weeks, admittedly a small sample size. If they don't go wire-to-wire, it would be a surprise. Anything can happen, of course -- the Tide almost gagged to Tennessee last year -- but the eyeball test suggests the October 9 game at South Carolina is the main chance to prevent another unbeaten regular season in Tuscaloosa (which would be three straight for the Nicktator)."
Joe Kines' daughter killed in Tuscaloosa car accident
I'm sure all our prayers go out to Coach Kines and his family.
More on Demetrius Jemison
Gentry Estes has an extended writeup of the Jemison story up today. It's really kind of disturbing, though the most disturbing parts involve statements of an AAU manager, and you probably should give a huge discount to whatever he claims.
UA limiting Justin Knox's transfer options
Not letting him transfer to another SEC school is understandable. Refusing to grant a release for him to go to UAB, a school we notoriously don't play in men's basketball, is something else. I can't interpret this as anything but being mean.
Roy Upchurch to try out with the Ravens
Who else? Here's hoping that at some point this preseason he lines up in the backfield with Mt. Cody as lead blocker... RB is a deep spot for Baltimore, with Ray Rice, the aging Willis McGehee, and of course Le'Ron McClain.
Draft picks grown here: Alabama
More draftnik love. Remember two years ago, when nobody from the team got drafted?

UPDATE: It seems to be confirmed that she's a UA student.
Taylor Pharr: Punter?
I'd kinda like to see him win the job. You don't see many 290-pound punters around.
ESPN: Crohn's won't affect McClain's draft stock
"After watching a lot of film on Alabama ILB Rolando McClain we came away with questions about his top-end speed. McClain did not run at the combine because of a hamstring injury, but at the Crimson Tide's pro day he clocked times in the high-4.6/low-4.7 range which -- combined with his size and instincts -- prove he is fast enough to develop into an every-down linebacker. And don't look for the revelation that McClain has Crohn's disease to affect his stock. He's dealt with it since his freshman year of high school and McClain still developed into the top inside linebacker in the nation and a mid-first round pick."
ESPN Insider mock drafts
Kiper and McShay both have McClain 15th to the Giants. (This is pre-Pro Day, so pre-40-time and pre-Crohn's). A lot of people had him going to the Dolphins at 12, but Karlos Dansby blocked that. (Stupid Aubie.)
Kiper's always been higher on Cody than McShay, and has him going 28th to the Chargers, who need a nose tackle. Quote: "Cody is the quintessential block-occupying clogger who makes everyone else better."
Quarterback is no concern
I don't think I ever saw this actually reported, but Thomas Darrah has indeed transferred to Jacksonville State.
Scarbinsky: Could Lance Thompson come back?
With James Willis gone to TT, it makes a lot of sense. It depends upon how burned his bridges are.
Andrew Steele out for the season after surgery
If it weren't for bad luck, that family would have no luck at all.
MBB: Kansas State 87, Alabama 74
Kansas State led all the way, jumping out to a 20-6 lead six minutes in the game, and though Alabama kept fighting, they were never really back in it, trailing by as much as 21 points. As usual, the Tide was led by JaMychal Green (with 17) and Mikhail Torrance (with 20).
Bama was killed on the boards, outrebounded 33-18. The Tide is undersized by major conference standards, but has usually done a better job of holding its own. No Alabama player had more than Senario Hillman's four rebounds.
Kansas State is #22 in the country and first in RPI, so the loss (on a "neutral" court in Mobile) isn't surprising, but the inability to keep it close is. They tried, and were able to get a little run to close the lead to eight with seven minutes to go, but tonight were just outclassed.
MBB: Alabama 60, Samford 45
Since Samford isn't UAB, we'll play them, in basketball anyway, and won as we should, fairly easily. After playing a number of teams from top conferences in a row, it was a bit of a relief to dip into the Southern Conference.
As usual, the Tide was led by Mikhail Torrance, with fifteen points and seven assists, and JaMychal Green, with fourteen points and four rebounds. Samford (or "Sarmrod" as the Rolltide.com game story has it) kept it close to the second media timeout, but the Tide pulled away to a double-digit lead by late in the first half, led 35-24 at the break, and held on from there. The Bulldogs never got it within single digits in the second half.
The officials, apparently sensing the inevitable, swallowed their whistles for this one. Alabama shot only five free throws, which was four more than Samford. I'm not sure I approve, but it was a break for the shallow Crimson Tide.

Why Alabama didn't have a Heisman winner until last night
[N.B.: I wrote this for a non-fan audience, but I figured I'd repost it here. Seriously, they couldn't have started in 1934? -- MT]
1. Timing. Alabama has had two great eras. Everyone knows about the Bryant era, but the first was under Wallace Wade (1923-1930) and Frank Thomas (1931-1946). The Heisman wasn’t given out until 1935, halfway through the period. Wade and Thomas had several great players from 1923-1934. If the first Heisman had been given out one year earlier, there is every chance that the first winner would have been Don Hutson, who pretty clearly was the best player in college football in 1934.
2. Defense. Most of Alabama’s best players have been defensive players. Only one defensive player has ever won the Heisman, and he was a defensive back who played some offense and returned kicks. Players like Lee Roy Jordan and Derrick Thomas could easily have been the “most outstanding college football player”.
3. Team mentality. Coach Bryant in particular played a lot of players, and very rarely rode one quarterback even before he installed the wishbone. If you watch footage of some of his sixties teams, he’s playing three or four quarterbacks when his starter is someone like Joe Namath or Ken Stabler. It’s weird, actually. But it worked.
4. The wishbone. Coach Bryant’s best teams, the dominant seventies era squads, ran the wishbone. The way that system works, no running back is going to get more than at most forty percent of the team’s carries. If a wishbone player is going to win the Heisman, it’s probably going to be a quarterback, but as noted, he was using three or four quarterbacks and none put up huge running totals.
5. Namath. Joe would have won the Heisman his senior year, in my opinion, except that he had knee problems which hurt his mobility and brain problems that caused Bryant to keep him in a rotation system rather than riding a once-in-a-lifetime talent. Bama won the national championship that year, but Namath only attempted 100 passes.
6. Dumb luck. Just one of those things.

MBB: Tide blows 16 point lead, loses to Purdue 71-65
Now a win would have been a major upset, as Purdue is fifth in the country. (Thought personally, I never take any Big Ten team but Michigan State seriously unless they've done something really impressive to prove themselves.) But this is disappointing. Alabama led 46-30 early in the second half, and 53-41 with twelve minutes to go. From that point on, they were outscored 30-12.
Purdue jumped out to a 9-1 lead, but that was followed by a 28-9 run by Alabama to pull into a sizeable lead that held for much of the game, as Purdue seemed unable to handle the Tide's quickness. But from that twelve-minute mark, Alabama couldn't get anything going on offense, took some bad (and quick and stupid) shots, and kept giving up offensive rebounds.
Mikhail Torrance had his usual fine game with 18 points, but was shut down late by Purdue defensive specialist Chris Cramer, and none of the other perimeter players stepped up, especially after Senario Hillman fouled out with eight minutes left. JaMychal Green had 16 and eight rebounds, and Justin Knox scored 14 off the bench.
ESPN isn't sure who should be the Heisman favorite...
Saturday is Mark Ingram Day in Flint, Mich.
As everyone probably knows, there's hardly anywhere that's had a rougher time of it than Flint. How about the Heisman voters give them something to celebrate?
Three Tide players named to Freshman All-SEC Team
Barrett Jones was a unanimous pick, as he should have been. Trent Richardson and Nico Johnson also made the team.
Alabama players take eight spots on coaches' first-team All-SEC squad
Don't think this has been posted, it's hard to keep all the all-conference teams straight.... Ingram, Johnson, McClain, Cody, Barron, Arenas (twice) and Tiffin on the first team, Julio on the second. Ingram and McClain were unanimous.

One thing about Saban -- you know you're going to get staff turnover. Losing both Sunseri and Smart, which is possible, would hurt.
MBB: Tide rallies in second half to beat North Florida,73-51
Of course, rallying to beat North Florida is hardly something to brag about. I didn't even know there was a North Florida. (They are the "Ospreys", FWIW.) The Tide trailed 31-30 at the half, but outscored their opponents 43-20 in the second.
Tony Mitchell led the way with 17 points and seven rebounds, as JaMychal Green had a subpar game (7-5, and scoreless in the first half). Mikhail Torrance added 15, and Charvez Davis scored ten. The Tide won the rebounding battle, 40-30, and held UNF to 38 percent shooting.
