Bleeding Green Nation Inside the Call: Vick's 76 Yard TD to Maclin

The idea behind this creation is to show you–our readers–how the Eagles develop some of their exciting plays that have been seen in notable games, and how they have been able to execute them to perfection. In what is currently somewhat of a dull time of the season, the offseason is all about rumors and Draft coverage, but we hope to bring a creative and interesting twist to Philly fans. Without further ado, here is the first Inside the Call...

Bleeding Green Nation Fantasy Report: Week Nine

donovan-mcnabbAs we approach the ninth week of the NFL season, it is necessary for all fantasy football participants–especially those involved with Bleed Green’s fantasy league–to know who to start and who to sit in order to successfully compete. Below is a brief examination of players that you should be sure to start and bench this week. Unlike previous Fantasy Reports, I now have listed multiple players for each position in the “Start” category, giving you more options and analysis.

Bleeding Green Nation Breaking Down Cowboys' WR Miles Austin

miles austinAll of us NFL fans have witnessed the emergence of Cowboys’ Wide Receiver Miles Austin over the early course of the season. Due to the departure, or shall we say exile, of the ego-driven WR Terrell Owens in the offseason, Austin was placed in an ideal situation in the Dallas offense. The undrafted receiver has risen above Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton on the depth chart, even though Williams feels he is still the number one WR on the roster. So just how has Miles Austin made the jump from undrafted rookie to leading receiver on “America’s Team”?

Bleeding Green Nation The King and His Royal Family

DunlapMove over Manning family, there’s a new powerhouse family on the block, and it’s the family of our very own King Dunlap. The Eagles’ Offensive Tackle has some strong athletic roots in his family tree, including a former NFL player and a few track stars. Unlike the famous Manning heritage group, which is strictly a football family (and a rather successful football family), the Dunlap’s excel in multiple sports, something that the Manning’s cannot say. Take a seat, sit back, and allow Bleed Green to introduce the Dunlap family.

Bleeding Green Nation The Rise Of Brent Celek

Brent CelekWhen the Philadelphia Eagles selected Brent Celek in the 5th round, they were not expecting him to evolve into a top tier NFL Tight End. Just like the rest of us, the Eagles figured Celek could compete for a roster spot behind then-starting TE L.J. Smith. But what none of us expected, at least not so soon, was the emergence of Brent Celek (pictured) in the Eagles’ offensive schemes. After L.J. Smith received word that he would be released, and eventually signed with the Baltimore Ravens, Celek took the opportunity that was placed in front of him, and grasped it with open arms.

Bleeding Green Nation Fantasy Report: Week Two

Kevin CurtisWith Week One completed, and the first fantasy week over, it’s time to fix up your rosters. I’m sure most of us, even if you did win last week, could improve our team. The one player that you do not want on your team is a fantasy killer (e.g. Jake Delhomme). My fantasy predictions in Week One were fairly impressive, better than even I would have guessed. So I will attempt to improve upon my great week last week, and give you my Week Two Fantasy Start ‘ Ems and Sit’Ems.

Bleeding Green Nation 2 Players Cut, 2 Placed On IR On Day of Cuts

Charleston HughesThe deadline for all 32 NFL teams to cut their roster down to 75 players is today, and the Philadelphia Eagles have just reached the 75 player mark. The Eagles needed to cut 5 players before today’s deadline to reach 75. Their first move came yesterday with the release of Offensive Tackle Chris Patrick. Today, the Eagles cut two players, one being Charleston Hughes and the other being Brandon Harrison. In addition to the three cuts, the Eagles placed both Stewart Bradley and Cornelius Ingram on the Injured Reserve, due to both players suffering season ending injuries.

Bleeding Green Nation All-Time Roster Voting Results Part II

Back in March, an interactive voting system was installed so that fans could rank the best of the best Eagle players in franchise history, from the Quarterback position, to the Center spot, to the Head Coach. Amazingly, we received approximately 1,000 votes, and a great deal of positive feedback in this poll process. This activity, named “Eternal Eagles”, has created our fans’ view of the greatest Eagles of all-time, and this post was created to recap the entire process, which lasted nearly 5 months, and included over 70 player candidates. So, read ahead and see how our fans (perhaps you are one of them) worked together to decide the best Philadelphia Eagles of franchise history in the “Eternal Eagles All-Time Roster Voting”: (ONLY A FEW POSITIONS ARE INCLUDED IN THIS POST DUE TO THE DETAILED CONTENT OF THE ARTICLE. THE REMAINING POSITIONS WILL BE REVIEWED IN FUTURE POSTS, AND THE FIRST FEW 5 POSITIONS WERE REVIEWED IN “PART ONE” OF THE ARTICLE.)

Bleeding Green Nation Vick's Impact On Fantasy Football

Mike VickWe all know that Michael Vick’s golden days are more than likely behind him. For the former Falcon QB, his golden days were when he was breaking off long runs and weaving in and out of defenders’ grasps; he always would provide some sort of fantasy contribution. Granted, he never was a top fantasy point producer, but was never a bad option to fill in for your starting Quarterback’s bye week, or any injuries that may have been suffered during the season. So how will the Vick of today impact the fantasy world this year?

Bleeding Green Nation The Eagles' New Found Leader

Before the start of mini camp, and the long grueling weeks of training camp, the biggest question mark of the Eagles was not the offensive line, or the core of receivers, in fact, it was the issue of who would become the new leader of the Eagles team. We all know who previously was the heart and soul of the Eagles defense, and the whole team, but with Dawkins’ departure from the organization, the Eagles of today will look up to a new face. Whose face you ask? The Pro Bowler, former Super Bowl champ, and current starting cornerback, Asante Samuel.

Bleeding Green Nation Give Thanks For Having McNabb

“ With the 2nd overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select…Ricky Williams.” This was what every fan wanted to hear. When former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced the name of “Donovan McNabb” instead of “Ricky Williams”, the Eagles’ fans began to verbally abuse poor McNabb. I can remember the scene, the one where McNabb is holding up his Eagles jersey with Paul Tagliabue, and hearing the brutality of the Eagles’ fans as they continued to bash the draft choice. What a day that was, not just for McNabb, but also for Ricky Williams. The University of Texas star running back was predicted by, almost everyone who knew anything about football, to be drafted 2nd overall to the Eagles. We all know the outcome of that day, but what would have happened had the Eagles selected Ricky Williams?

Bleeding Green Nation The Men In The Middle

Before the preseason, the Eagles had one of the best young linebackers in the game. Going into the preseason, the Eagles are stuck with having to find a replacement for Stewart Bradley, who tore his ACL during training camp. The Eagles, who go up against the New England Patriots tonight, have a lot of positional battles going on. Whether it is the battle for the 3rd Running Back spot between Eldra Buckley and Lorenzo Booker, or the battle for Defensive End where a slew of players are contending, the Eagles’ coaching staff and management will be focusing on the Middle Linebacker spot. With Bradley out for the season, the Eagles will begin the process of finding a replacement tonight, in their first live game of the season.

The Middle Linebacker battle has a bunch of players fighting it out to take over the spot, but there are two legit players who can take over the role. First, we will look at Joe Mays, and then Omar Gaither

Joe Mays

Coming into his second season, Mays (pictured) feels he is already capable of taking over the Middle Linebacker job. Last year, Mays had a phenomenal preseason, finishing with 30 tackles, putting him at the top of the charts for defenders. Mays never got a chance to prove himself during the regular season, but if he can put up another terrific preseason, Mays can secure his spot as the #1 Middle Linebacker on the team.

The North Dakota State product will be the starter going into tonight’s game against the Patriots. Mays will get to show his talent against a high-powered offense, and if he can put up a solid effort tonight, expect Mays to continue getting the start at MLB throughout preseason.

Omar Gaither

Unlike Mays, Gaitherhas had a chance to prove himself in the NFL. The 6’2", 25 year old linebacker has put up pretty good stats in his young career. Back in 2007, Gaither finished the season with 135 tackles, but last season Gaither had a sub-par performance in the beginning of the year, and lost his job to Akeem Jordan.

In the first preseason game tonight, Gaither will be behind Mays on the depth chart, but he will get a good amount of time to prove himself worthy to the coaching staff. He has a good shot tonight to put up monster numbers, especially since he will go up against the second team offense of the Patriots, but Gaither will need to show he can play with the starters next week.

The Rest

Besides Mays and Gaither, the rest of the middle linebackers are going to try to fill in the rest of the depth chart, and find a spot on special teams. Charleston Hughes, who was signed this off season, is one of these guys who is contending for a backup role and a spot on special teams. Hughes is a rookie to the NFL, but has past experience in the Canadian Football League.

Another rookie who is looking for a job on the Eagles is Moise Fokou. Selected in the 7thround, Fokou has been a surprise at training camp this year. He has looked brilliant thus far, and he will be a player to watch in tonight’s game.

Other than Hughes and Fokou, the Eagles’ other significant MLB contender comes in the form of recent signing and former Charger Matt Wilhelm. A veteran in the league, Wilhelm was unexpectedly cut by the Chargers this off season, and has totaled 171 career tackles in his 6 year career.

With the Eagles’ opening preseason game just hours away, we are all excited to get our first look at the team in a live game. As fans, we tend to just watch the game as it comes, and follow the action. But if you can get a chance, try to keep an eye on the Middle Linebackers and the other positional battles during the game, so you can make your own conclusion of who you think will secure a spot on the team. Go Eagles!!

Alligator Army Ingram's Season Done

Gator Nation witnessed Cornelius Ingram suffer a serious injury back in the offseason last year, which ended his season and career with Florida. The big time playmaking Tight End took his football career into the NFL in this years draft, when he was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles. Ingram appeared to be getting a second chance to prove his skills to the big league, but in a tragic fashion, the former Gator saw his season, and quite possibly his career end. Ingram went down at Eagles camp, and when the results came back, it showed that Ingram had tore his ACL again.

Bleeding Green Nation History Repeats Itself

Throughout the history of the Philadelphia Eagles, we have all witnessed the likes of Chuck Bednarick, Reggie White, Harold Carmichael, and many more. All of these guys have given us, the fans, the entertainment we all seek on Sundays. When we get ready to watch our favorite team take the field, we think for a moment about the former greats to suit up in the green uniform. As we see Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook walk out from the tunnel, we remember the former greats to walk out from the Eagles locker room. The Eagles certainly are one of the more historical teams in the NFL. With their hard-nosed and talented players, the Eagles have proven to be contenders each and every year. But even though it’s hard to compare the Eagles of today, to the Eagles of the past, we all have done it anyway. As this is still the slowest part of the off-season, I have done some research, and tried to find comparisons between the Eagles of recent, to the Eagles off yesterday.

Bleeding Green Nation A Dunn Deal?

The Philadelphia Eagles appear to be confident in their team, and are now focused on getting over the hump, and reaching the ultimate prize in football, the Super Bowl. Even with all the unanswered questions that surround the Eagles backfield, the Birds seem to be set on their crop of running backs. Atleast, that’s what it appeared it to be. Rumors have swirled around Philadelphia that the Eagles are interested in adding the veteran back, Warrick Dunn. The rumors have been brought about by ESPN.com, and have been discussed in USA Today.

Bleeding Green Nation The Great Debate: Part 1

It’s that time again, the time of the year that the arguments heat up about the NFC East. Whether it’s Eagles’ fans brawling with Giants’ fans, or Redskins’ fans screaming at Cowboys’ fans, there is pure hatred between each and every team in the NFC East. Specifically, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys. The 48 year battle has been one of the nastiest rivalries in all of football, and the fans of both the Eagles and Cowboys have supported them throughout the long history of this intense rivalry that we all love.

In “The Great Debate: Part 1”, I will be going up against Bryce Treece, editor of the Dallas Cowboys website, Dallas Cowboys Nation. The topic of the debate will be “ Which team will do better in 2009?”, with Bryce stating why the Cowboys will do better in 2009, and I standing up for our favorite team, the Eagles.

Bleeding Green Nation How Would You Rank Eagles In Fantasy Value

The 2009 Eagles roster is certainly filled with talent, there's no questioning that, but when it comes to determining their fantasy value, it is a toss up. The top fantasy performers are undoubtledly Brian Westbrook and Donovan McNabb, but how do the others stack up. I will attempt to rank all the Eagles' players on their fantasy value. With A being the highest possible rank, and F being the lowest possible rank.

RB Brian Westbrook - B+

RB LeSean McCoy - C-

RB Lorenzo Booker - D+

Bleeding Green Nation The Future Tough Guy In Philly

The city of Philadelphia has been built on the toughness of their residents, and throughout the history of the Philadelphia Eagles, toughness was never questioned among their players. The list is never ending, there is Bucko Kilroy, who was once accused of biting opposing linemen, Tommy McDonald, who was the last NFL player to wear a facemask, Chuck “Concrete Charlie” Bednarik, who was the last NFL player to play both offense and defense, one of my favorites, Brian Dawkins, and now there is Victor “Macho” Harris. The 157th pick in this year’s draft, Macho Harris seems to fit the role of a true Philadelphia Eagle. His combination of toughness and courage will make him a fan favorite among the Eagles’ fans. Just look at the man’s nickname, Macho, that already tells me that he is a hard-nosed football player. So how did Victor Harris become “Macho” Harris? At the age of 2, he was a very challenging kid. His father said he would be running around the house with his bike, and this led his father to think of a “tough guy” name, eventually deciding on Macho.

Bleeding Green Nation The Philadelphia Eagles' Fantasy Value

While only a select group of extremely wealthy individuals have the privilege of owning a real NFL team, anyone can enjoy the thrill of owning a team of NFL players by playing fantasy football. Whether you’re a hardcore or casual fan, fantasy football brings people together in a competitive style, with bragging rights on the line. There are different types of leagues, but the main objective is to draft players from the NFL player pool and gain points based upon their success during the season. But to win your league, you need to have a great set of strategies, and you must be aware of any players who are on the rise or on the decline. Here at Bleed Green, we are all fans of our beloved Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles are one of the more interesting teams in fantasy football, as they posses an enormous amount of fantasy talent, where many of their starters have the potential to start for your fantasy football team on Sundays.

The Eagles Who Can Make A Fantasy Impact

Quarterback: Donovan McNabb
McNabb has never had it so good. In the upcoming 2009 seaso n, the receiving corps is the best he has had to work with in his career. With DeSean Jackson, Kevin Curtis, Jason Avant, and rookie wideout Jeremy Maclin, McNabb (see picture) has many reliable options that should improve their already stout offense. McNabb has made the most of his mediocre receivers in the past, now he finally has a dangerous set of receivers.

Projections - 3, 987 passing yards, 25 TD, 9 INT
Expected Draft Position - 4th Round

Running Back: Brian Westbrook
Though he will be slowed down in training camp after surgery to clean up some bone spurs in his right ankle, Westbrook is still a reliable running back in fantasy leagues. The 2009 season may not be his best, he should still put up pretty solid numbers. With the addition of LT Jason Peters, he should see bigger and more running lanes than he did last season. If Westbrook can show us that can make his cuts and continue his dominance in the open field, expect another good campaign in 2009.

Projections - 1, 1,27 rushing yards, 13 TD ( Rushing/Receiving)
Expected Draft Position - 2nd Round

Wide Receiver: DeSean Jackson
DeSean is coming off of a great rookie season in 2008, a nd with all the attention on him this season, we will see if he can be our future #1 WR that we expect him to be. His lightning quick speed and ability to make defenders miss will prove lethal again in 2009, and he should see more passes thrown his way. The chemistry that McNabb and Jackson built last season assures to us that the duo will continue to frustrate defenses, and keep the Eagles atop the NFC East standings.

Projections - 82 Receptions, 1,215 yards, 8 TD
Expected Draft Position - 5th/6th Round

Wide Receiver: Kevin Curtis
He has been labeled “Mr. Inconsistent” in the fantasy world, as we never know what Kevin Curtis will show up on gamedays. He has the capability to reach over 1,000 yards in 2009, but the big question is if he will be able to stay healthy and be consistent over the course of the season. If so, Curtis can be a late round steal in any fantasy league.

Projections - 48 Receptions, 786 yards, 5 TD
Expected Draft Position - 10th/11th Round

Defense/ Special Teams
The Eagles defense lost their heart and soul in Brian Dawkins, but will look for young Quintin Demps to provide some boost in the secondary. The defensive line is still bolstered by Mike Patterson and Broderick Bunkley, with Trent Cole wrecking havoc on the outside. The linebacker corps remains the same, with Stewart Bradley taking charge at Middle Linebacker. At corner, Asante Samuel and Sheldon Brown are helped out with the additon of Ellis Hobbs after the loss of Lito Sheppard. Expected Draft Position - 11th Round

Sleepers
Running Back: LeSean McCoy
He will see a lot of time in 2009, and it will increase if Westbrook is unable to play at full level. Don't rely on him as a full-time starter, but at least consider him if yout league's RB pool is running thin of talent during the season.

Wide Receiver: Jeremy Maclin
His speed and athleticism should keep the secondary confused all day, and if can prove that he can play against NFL defense’s, expect him to possibly have a dominant rookie campaign.

Tight End: Brent Celek
Possibly the most underrated TE in 2009, Celek showed in the playoffs that he can play with the best of them, and he should be a redzone threat all season.

Injury-Risk Players
Running Back: Brian Westbrook
You have to be worried about how he will bounce back after off-season surgery.
Wide Receiver: Kevin Curtis
How will he come back after his injury prone 2008 season?

Risers in 2009
Wide Receiver: Jason Avant He's never been a reliable fantasy target, but he's probably a safer pick than rookie Jeremy Maclin, and with a confident McNabb under center with a new contract, he just may see an increase in catches and yards.

Tight End: Cornelius Ingram Although he's yet to play a down in the NFL, Ingram may be a rising player throughout the season if the Eagles decide to run quite a few two-TE formations when near the endzone. With these types of plays being called, Ingram could potentially become a late-round worthy player capable of recording scores and catches every now and then.

Sinkers in 2009 Kicker: David Akers Despite his brilliant fantasy season in '08, Akers is going into his 11th season and could see a decrease in Field Goals if the team scores more touchdowns in 2009 as they are predicted to do. If McNabb, Westbrook, and Jackson have great fantasy seasons which include many TDs, then it is likely Akers will not get as many field goal chances as he did in 2008 (40). --- Not every Eagles player will make a huge impact on the 2009 Fantasy Season, but if you plan ahead and evaluate the key players, you will most likely experience a great season that can be supported by several of the Eagles' dominant performers.
