McCalvy's rundown of injuries entering camp

It looks like Hall won't be the only player in the training room to start camp. Most notably Gwynn and Bourgeois seem to have some early issues that could impact their chances of making the team if they don't heal up quickly.

EDIT: A quick rundown:

Hall's injury is as previously thought, partially torn calf, 4-6 weeks.
Gwynn has a shoulder impingement and will not be allowed to throw.
Jason Bourgeois has a broken left pinkie finger.
Alex Periard has tightness in his shoulder.
Chris Capuano and Mark Rogers still cannot throw as they recover from their respective arm troubles.

Brewers aquisitions:

Turnbow Expectations

After coming across Turnbow's name in the SI article on Attanasio, I got to thinking what my expectations are for him in the future.

My very first impression was the true comeback story. Something along the lines of Turnbow pitching decent enough in AAA to allow himself to be included on the 25 man roster for the p-offs. You know what I mean, the true "cinderella story" where he figures it out, makes his way back to the team, and does something spectacular to earn his place in Brewers lore. I believe this idea came from the fact that he hadn't had any glaring BB-loaded appearances, that I had noticed in recent memory, and that I generally want the underdog to succeed.

Being the semi-knowledgeable baseball fan that I perceive myself to be, I decided to check his recent stats to determine if he was in fact on the road back. The first thing I noticed was the 1 ER in the 4.1 IP from June 23 to July 9th, encouraging right? Sadly, then I saw his most recent outing on June 12th, .1 IP, 1 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 0 SO. That line has me a little worried that we may have seen the last of the Turnbow we love. I'm not sure if there is minor leauge pitch f/x, but I would love to find out what is going on with a pitcher like Turnbow. There are obvious times when Turnbow is lights out, but then there are those obvious times when he is more wild than a cricket on coke. Maybe dixie already has data on Turnbow that reveals what he does/doesn't do in his good/bad appearences (which I apologize if I'm not aware of it), but I would love to know what is going on. Anyway, my main goal throughout this rambling post is to get a pulse on everyone's expectations of Turnbow from here on out. Feel free to elaborate on your poll selection

 <fieldset class="poll-box">
 <legend>Poll</legend>

What are your expectations for Derrick Turnbow?

Washed Up HGH user who has seen his finest days gone (i.e. out of baseball in a few short years)

Chronically wild-challenged pitcher whom caught fire, but whose flame has now burned out (i.e. will toil in the minors for years trying to regain that lightning in a bottle)

Talented pitcher that has previously harnessed his "fire" and is only a matter of time from doing so again (i.e. only a matter of time before he figures it out and is back on the big stage)

You don't even have to get off your rear, you can just sit right where you are and VOTE.

There really is no excuse for not opening up the voting window and dropping Corey a vote or two...hundred. He still holds a lead, but it looks to be a tight race. You have until 4 p.m. central time today to get those votes in. I think I heard Jeff say he would streak the all-star game if we voted Corey in, right Jeff?

Parra's Workload

After another stellar outing by Parra yesterday I got curious about his past workload. Here are his yearly IP according to The Baseball Cube:
2002 - 49.2
2003 - 138.2
2004 - 73.1
2005 - 91.0
2006 - 86.0
2007 - 133.0

Assuming he is past his arm problems, it is conceivable that even if he makes the team out of spring training we are not going to have a full year of him. If you use this law of 30 that everybody was referencing with Gallardo, we probably shouldn't expect more than 160-165 innings. That being the case, what is the best way to distribute those innings or do we consider him a special circumstance that isn't bound by that 30 inning rule because he is older than Gallardo?

 <fieldset class="poll-box">
 <legend>Poll</legend>

If limited by his IP totals, how would you prefer Parra's innings be controlled?

throw IP out the window and ride him all year long

17 votes
