Welcome to the NBA Tobias Harris!

  1. Tobias Harris got off the "not playing in the NBA" schneid today, as he played.
  2. He was glad to have the opportunity and reminded everyone that he could not have done this (playing in the NBA) without constant supervision from his mother and God.
  3. Coach Scott Skiles said that he played hard and that he showed effort and energy while definitely impressing the other team with his basketball IQ.
  4. He showed his ability to get points when he scored the ball through the basket with his hands after using his legs to jump the Tobias.
  5. He has room to improve as he has youth and potential to draw upon as he gets older. He'll need to lose his baby fat but someday he'll definitely get it.

Brew Hoop MadTown's Unofficial Scientifically Inaccurate Guesstimated Partial Mock Draft

Well, here it goes.  A very sketchy mock top ten selections draft by yours truly.

Let's just say no trades go down and the draft just plays out, what could happen?

What are your draft predictions? Here are a few of mine.

  1. That the Jazz will select Jimmer Fredette, essentially moving up all teams behind them one pick
  2. That the Raptors will go with a dark horse international player, i.e. Donatas Motiejunas
  3. The Bucks are going to baffle the NBA world by taking a project with "hustle" that can't shoot, thus allowing the Bucks to shoot the worst percentage in history, so John Hammond can finally win the $50 bet with Joe Dumars.
  4. The Spurs are going to own everybody like usual, Phoenix will trade away a pick or two for $3 million
  5. It just won't be the same without Kevin Pritchard

SLC Dunk A Moment of Silence for Coach Sloan

Some things aren't appreciated until they move on.  I just saw the news that Jerry Sloan is stepping down from his position as head coach of the Utah Jazz, a position he held for over twenty years.  This in a league where lead coach changes are so prevalent that the situation is compared to a merry-go-round.  The true impact of what has happened in Utah has yet to truly sink in.  The NBA isn't losing another Sam Mitchell, Sloan is an icon of the sport.  This is like the Statue of Liberty stepping down and moving to Florida, the NBA has lost someone too valuable to account for.

This trade is successful in the trade machine and it would probably work because David Kahn has a thing for awkward Europeans. Yes, I know Delfino is Argentinean, I'm talking about Ersan.

Brew Hoop Sanders to Bucks

With the fifteenth pick in the NBA draft, the Milwaukee Bucks have selected... Larry Sanders!  I for one am ecstatic.  He is long, strong and a terrific blocker.  He brings an inside presence that the Bucks need behind Bogut and the announcers at ESPN emphasized that he is extremely coachable.  He came in recently and Skiles had a meal with the man.  I think that the front office got a good sense that his heart is in the right place.  So what do you think?

This is listed as Larry Sanders in Google search.  I can't tell yet.

What do you think of the Bucks pick at #15, Larry Sanders?
I like it, the Bucks could use what he brings to the table.

Not a fan, we could have had Babbit!

Not a fan, we should have taken Anderson!

It's a great pick, if it pans out.

I question his character.

Obligatory KFC reference. Sanders is finger lickin' good.

Indifferent, maybe we should still trade him.

Brew Hoop Now is the Time to Make a Move

Each year there are a few teams which, due to chemistry issues or cheap owners or trade demands, end up in a position of vulnerability.  The savvy GM exploits these situations, sometimes resulting in a championship (Pau Gasol to Lakers, Kevin Garnett to Celtics).  This year is no exception and there are a few teams and situations ready to be used to the Bucks' advantage.

Brew Hoop Everybody Loves Hammond

Johnny_20hammond_medium

via www.espnmilwaukee.com

After the Larry Harris era, it is still so refreshing to hear good things said about our GM. He is well-liked by pretty much everyone who has worked with/for him. This from Sporting News:

http://www.sportingnews.com/nba/article/2009-08-20/delfino-welcomed-bucks-boguts-back-better

"Hammond knew both Delfino and Johnson from his days as assistant general manager in Detroit when he helped draft both. Delfino said Hammond was the catalyst for his NBA return, which happened in a span of less than six days.

'He’s a person I trust," Delfino said. "I was really, really happy to be involved. Happy is the word.' "

Sure didn't seem like anybody trusted Harris. Perhaps even more so than the focus on defense, this is the culture change the Bucks have sorely needed. If I were a free agent, I'd be more likely to sign to play for someone I trust. So it's been a year, how do you feel about Hammond as the Milwaukee Bucks GM?

Poll
How do you feel about John Hammond after his first year?
I like him, he's exactly what this franchise needed.
49 votes
I like him as a person, but as a GM he's in over his head.

Indifferent, I'll let you know when he does something that really changes the team's fortunes.
26 votes
Terrible. What does he think he's doing?

I’m encouraged that Hammond is what this franchise needs, and by and large am on board for the moves that have been made so far, but he hasn’t really proven anything yet.

Brew Hoop What Is the Deal With National Coverage?

I do not understand the national media’s response to the Bucks’ summer. A good example of how folks outside of Wisconsin view the Jefferson trade and loss of Villanueva is Yahoo’s team report for the Bucks:

"NBA officials are still baffled as to why Bucks general manager John Hammond didn’t even extend a qualifying offer to veteran F Charlie Villanueva. Villanueva was coming off a quality season and he’s still only 24 years old. What’s more, the Bucks have a dearth of reliable power forwards on their roster. Villanueva ended up signing a contract with the Detroit Pistons.

Bucks owner Herb Kohl has a reputation of sometimes meddling in the team’s player personnel decisions. Some observers felt Kohl may have been behind the Bucks’ recent decision to trade veteran small forward Richard Jefferson to San Antonio for virtually nothing (Bruce Bowen, Kurt Thomas and Fabricio Oberto, the last of whom was then traded to Detroit for Amir Johnson). But Bucks general manager John Hammond said Kohl didn’t mandate any salary dump and that it was strictly his call to make the trade and open up more "options" for the team."

Poll
Is there a bias in the national media's coverage against small market teams?
Yes

No

Brew Hoop Free Agency Begins ... NOW!

So, that magical time of the year is back when the Bucks alternately have no cap space and sit tight or have cap space and watch all of their targets choose sunnier destinations. That's right Bucks fans, it's free agency time!

Sporting News has a great breakdown of available free agents.

Brew Hoop Brandon Jennings: A True NBA Enigma

So I have been reading about our new point guard.  One thing that can be said for him: he says all the right things.  He has been an elite prospect for long enough that he has learned to craft an intriguing narrative.  It is centered on his becoming a man overseas, overcoming adversity and cultural barriers all while learning a team centric version of basketball.  He talks defense and doing what is necessary to help the team win.  It all goes down smooth for Bucks fans weary of the histrionics and selfishness of past floor generals.

But how is he in real life?

Brew Hoop Worried About Hammond

After a year, how's our head honcho doing?  Clearly he's helped to establish a new culture, and it's refreshing to hear outsiders compliment our team on being professional from top to bottom.  But he's made some puzzling personnel moves that have contributed in part to the migraine of a summer ahead.

Brew Hoop Ominous Signs of Things to Come?

We all knew things were tough all over these days, but this is somewhat shocking.  The NBA took out a loan of $175 million from J.P. Morgan to then give to ailing franchises.  Turns out 15 of 30 teams need some form of assistance.
