Kyler: Houston and Washington would rent Howard

37

...Magic will hire a GM, then hire a coach and then sit down with Dwight Howard and map out their vision for the future of the team… they will ask him if he is in or out… if he says out, they’ll trade where they can get the best deal and that will have nothing to do with what Dwight wants. I can tell you Houston would rent Dwight and would pay for the privilege. Hearing Washington would too. I think a lot of new suitors will surface if the Magic put Howard on the block, not just Brooklyn.

Orlando Magic likely to name GM by end of the week

1

"More importantly, my source has also said that the new GM will make the decision on Dwight. Meaning that if Dwight isn’t ready to commit long term, that the new GM will have the authority to either trade Howard or to move forward with one more year of the what-if’s. This initially seems to be contrary to the DeVos and Alex Martins previous iterations of decision-making authority, but it may be a strong piece in recruiting a powerful GM into the organization." Fran Vasquez speaks about his possible future in Orlando TRANSLATION: The latest information from the US places Fran Vasquez with the Orlando Magic. Weeks ago the Barcelona Regal Pivot (center) spoke with us (Basket4us) about his future and even dared to give Ricky Rubio some advice. Fran Vasquez: (tone sounds as if he was speaking about Rubio's description of Minnesota) . ...well its too cold but people have asked me if there is a difference between Minnesota and Orlando and I have said that I prefer Orlando because it is warmer; but it does get cold here (Barcelona) too. Host: Now that we are talking about that, do you see that occurring some day? Fran Vasquez: Well, at the moment I am not thinking about that, I am thinking about whats coming now "the cup" - and the rest can wait until things are more calm. But we'l see, we'll see...

Mitch Kupchak target of Magic GM search

+

"So while there have been no public indications that Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak will be available or wants to leave Los Angeles, Kupchak is expected to be among the first wave of candidates the Magic pursue, one of the sources said." ... "The Magic also are interested in speaking with Pacers general manager David Morway and former Hornets GM Jeff Bower, both of whom have interviewed twice for the Trail Blazers' opening, and former Portland GM and current Pacers executive Kevin Pritchard, sources said."

Dwight was nearly a Houston Rocket

1

" In March, the Rockets remained steadfast in their willingness to "rent" Howard and stayed involved in talks with the Magic. At the Toyota Center on trade deadline day after the dust cleared, I was told that Rockets GM Daryl Morey was the last one standing in the Howard chase. Weeks later I was informed that when Rockets front office personnel called it a night in the wee hours of the morning of the trade deadline, they believed they were going to land Howard later that day. The 6-foot-11 center reversed course and agreed to not exercise his opt-out clause to become a free agent, instead staying with the Magic for another year. It wasn’t until this week that we could say it definitively — multiple sources tell ClutchFans that had Dwight not opted in, he was coming to Houston in a trade." LINK

Key Magic source: "I don't think Dwight (Howard) wants to be here." Magic will again entertain more than NJ and LA as Dwight Howard suitors. They want veteran package and contract relief in deal.. Brian K. Schmitz ‏ @MagicInsider

Van Gundy said he and Howard can co-exist

7

"Listen, Dwight and I are not married, OK?" Van Gundy said. "So this concern over our relationship is mind-boggling to me, OK? I've never kissed him. We've never been on a date. ... When you're talking [about] a professional relationship, what matters — at least to me, my opinion — what matters is the results. "To me, the relationship was great," Van Gundy added. "There's a lot of wins and everything else. Now, Dwight would have to comment from his side on what he thinks is important."

Tyson Chandler DPOY

6

...according to Basketball Value, Chandler didn’t have nearly the defensive impact on his team that Dwight Howard did. When Dwight was off the court, the Magic allowed seven more points per 100 possessions. When Tyson was off the court, the Knicks actually allowed less points per 100 possessions (102 with Tyson, 100.5 without). 82games tells a similar story, that Tyson’s impact defensively wasn’t nearly as significant as Dwight’s. Plus, Dwight grabbed a higher percentage of defensive rebounds, blocked a higher percentage of shots, stole a higher percentage of balls and bested Tyson in basically every defensive category available, even down to defensive win shares, despite the fact Dwight played eight fewer games. Davis: no structural damage

1
Josh Robbins OSEN An MRI today showed that Glen Davis suffered no structural damage when he hurt his right knee Sunday night, team spokesman Joel Glass said. Davis mildly hyperextended the knee and his availability for tonight’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers is being called a gametime decision.

The true value of head coaches

21

"Van Gundy is a first-rate basketball mind, but he’s not the one responsible for the excellent defense Orlando has played over the last few years. Howard has won three consecutive Defensive Player of the Year Awards for a reason: he’s a 6’11, 265 center with a 7’4 wingspan and a 35’ vertical. There isn’t a coach in the NBA who couldn’t build a first-rate defense around him." "From 2001-2009, nine men won the NBA’s Coach of the Year Award. By 2012, only one (Gregg Popovich in San Antonio) was still with the same team. Voting for the award is hardly an exact science, but it reflects an underlying reality: a good head coach is fairly replaceable." Johnathan Tjarks RealGM

Adonal Foyle: New GM?

1

Something else to track here, though, is the future of general manager Otis Smith. Sources close to the situation tell ESPN.com that Howard's recently retired backup, Adonal Foyle, is held in the highest regard by Magic officials and is being groomed for a future role of front-office prominence.

Will Nelson opt out?

9

Turkoglu has facial fracture

6

Updating a previous post, Hedo Turkoglu may now need surgery to fix facial fractures to his right cheekbone suffered in Thursday's game against the Knicks. It was originally thought that Turkoglu's injury was of the short-term variety, but if he does opt for surgery it may change the recovery timetable. Stay tuned.

Lakers not the Nets

5

Contrary to what Peter Vescey wrote, NY Post is now saying this: According to league sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity, Orlando brass got fed up with Howard’s yes-no-maybe posturing and threatened to trade him to the Lakers, not his desired location, if he did not sign an agreement to waive the opt-out clause for the final season of his contract. Howard eventually signed the papers, but only after he was told "he would be a Laker by the end of the day," according to one source. Orlando played its trump card. Sources for months maintained Howard wanted no part of the Lakers, that he did not want to follow the legacy of Shaquille O’Neal. Orlando leaders had one other reason for the threat: They favored the Lakers’ package of Andrew Bynum, Devin Ebanks and Steve Blake over the Nets’ offer.

Magic players partying the night before NY game

5

The previous night, sources spotted the Magic’s Glen "Big Baby" Davis and Jason Richardson partying until the early hours. They started out dining in the private wine room of Philippe New York. Then the pair joined Dwight Howard — who got a shout-out from the DJ on the loudspeaker, spies said — Chris Duhon and Quentin Richardson at Greenhouse during R&B singer Dawn Richard’s EP release party. The players were seen ordering bottles of Champagne and raged in the club until around 3 a.m.

Jeff Van Gundy blasts Howard

8

"To me, only the most gullible fans would believe that this was about loyalty," Jeff said of Dwight’s decision. "I think it was about power and control. … I don’t know what they agreed to, but anybody who doesn’t think senior management and Howard have come to an agreement on either trading players to get people he (Dwight) likes or changing the coach or changing the general manager or changing the marketing of him. … Whatever they agreed to, there’s been an agreement made.
