The NBA's Real Kardashian: Dwight Howard and the fame cycle

1
The NBA's Real Kardashian - GrantLand: we should always remember that they are public figures, who, like all celebrities, make money by staying in the spotlight. The Famous for Being Famous athlete does not care about his team, the local community, the future of the franchise, or especially his teammates because the only thing he cares about winning is the current 24-hour news cycle … forever.

Q: What would be the max deal Fran Vazquez could get from the Magic if he came over next season? Larry Coon: Orlando still has the draft rights to Vasquez, and could sign him to a rookie scale contract (using the 2012 scale salary for the 11th pick) or they could sign him to a 3+ year deal using any room they have (including using their Mid-Level exception).

The Baby Brinks effect

ESPN stat guru, John Hollinger has dubbed him "The Grenade Launcher." But to his team mates, Ryan Anderson is more affectionately known as "Baby Brinks" - as in the Brink's truck he is going to...

They have a nickname for Ryan Anderson in the Orlando locker room. "We call him Baby Brinks Truck"

There were talks in January about Anderson signing a contract extension. But no deal was reached because of the uncertainty at the time about Magic center Dwight Howard staying with the team and because agent Jeff Austin believed his client could get better "value" by waiting.

Rockets buying out Derek Fisher

22

is he better back up than Duhon? The Rockets will buy out the contract of recently-acquired G Derek Fisher. The move signifies that the Rockets are clearly looking towards the future and wanting to develop their younger guards. While Fisher will probably get picked up relatively quickly, he is one of those players who is better in real-life than in fantasy hoops. Mar 16 - 2:48 PM

Warriors offering Monta Ellis and David Lee for Dwight Howard

3

WARRIORS SHOT DOWN "The Warriors got nowhere when they recently tried to get Dwight Howard in a deal. A Warrior executive said the Magic turned down Monta Ellis and David Lee, with Orlando telling the Warriors it will only move Howard by Thursday’s trading deadline if it can get a "major player" in return. The only thing major about Ellis and Lee are their bloated contracts, with each pocketing about $11 million this season. It was a double setback for the Warriors, who know they won’t be able to get Howard this summer if he becomes a free agent. They thought they had a shot to sign him long term with Jerry West, now a Warrior consultant for owner Joe Lacob" NY Daily News

Josh Smith asks for trade

Not directly Magic related but could be something to stir things up on the trade front. Article from the Atlanta Journal Constitution " Even as Josh Smith is having a strong season for the Hawks he has let the team know he wants to be traded as the March 15 deadline approaches, according to people with knowledge of Smith’s thinking. And the reasons for Smith’s dissatisfaction with the team now have to make the Hawks wonder if they will be able to sign him to a contract extension next season."

Rumor: Three way trade between LA, Orlando and Minnesota

10
Orlando: Andrew Bynum and Derek Williams Minnesota: Pau Gasol LA: JJ Berea, Michael Bealey and Dwight Howard Translation: With the trade deadline approaching, Puerto Rican JJ Barea's name surfaced on Friday as part of a rumored possible trade. According to various sources, Barea would be part of a three team exchange between the Minnesota Timberwolves, the LA Lakers and the Orlando Magic. In the transaction, Barea and his teammate Michael Beasley, along with Orlando's star center Dwight Howard would be traded to the Lakers. The Spaniard Pau Gasol would go from LA to Minnesota. Andrew Bynum of the Lakers and Derrick Williams of the Timberwolves would team up with the Magic. Andrew Bynum to get injection in right knee Friday

+

Andrew Bynum did not seek any postgame treatment for his problematic right knee despite some discomfort in the final moments of the Lakers’ loss Thursday night in Oklahoma City. Bynum had previously been scheduled to receive a Synvisc injection from his personal doctor, David Altchek, in Port St. Lucie, Fla., on Friday. The company’s website promotes "up to six months of osteoarthritis knee pain relief with a single injection."

Wafer deserves minutes

8
Hoopsworld (Alex Kennedy): "The Orlando Magic’s offense has been incredibly inconsistent this season and, at times, hard to watch. The team is averaging just 93.57 points and shooting 43.6 percent from the field, even with Dwight Howard’s 20.1 points per game and 55 percent field goal percentage. While Jason Richardson has been playing better as of late, the Magic still lack players who can create their own shot and the solution to their problem is already on their bench. Von Wafer, when given significant minutes, has played very well this season and provided scoring off the bench. Wafer has been a sparkplug, but recently fell out of Stan Van Gundy’s rotation. The numbers show that Wafer has been a solid contributor on the offensive end. In the nine games that Wafer has played at least 15 minutes, he has averaged 9.3 points. He’s shooting 49.3 percent from the field and he’s averaging 1.373 points per shot, the second-highest totals on the team trailing only Howard. The 26-year-old is averaging 22 points per 48 minutes and hasn’t made many mistakes when given minutes. While he’s not as comfortable in the system as Richardson and J.J. Redick, who aren’t new to the team, he deserves some playing time based on his production. "

J.R. Smith?

5

"The Orlando Magic may have emerged as a leading suitor for guard J.R. Smith." ... ... "While the Magic already have two shooting guards in Jason Richardson and J.J. Redick, they also have the advantage over most suitors with about $4.9 million of their Mid-Level Exception (MLE) still available. Under the new CBA, a team cannot use their full MLE to climb to $4 million over the luxury tax. Currently the Magic are under; any investment in Smith would put Orlando above the threshold. Orlando would also have to waive an additional player to make a roster spot, perhaps center Daniel Orton who has played all off three minutes for the Magic this season after missing his rookie year with a knee injury. Other possible waiver option might be DeAndre Liggins or Ish Smith."

Glen Davis' father died today

4

He lost his grandmother a couple weeks ago and now his dad today. "There’s some things going on I’m not going to talk about," coach Stan Van Gundy said, when asked about Davis’ 1-for-10 night. "Some things going on are personal. He gave us those minutes…pretty good for what’s going on." Van Gundy asked for people to "give him a break…in this case he deserves people to back off of him."

Howard's new CBA adjusted contract options

2

Good article by Steve Kyler with insight from salary cap expert, Larry Coon. Key points: • If Orlando doesn’t trade him, Dwight's real choices are: (A) Re-sign with Orlando to get an extra $855K per year and insurance for that fifth year; or (B) Sign with the team of his choice for $855K less per year, and wait 3 years for the opportunity to lock in the salary for year 5. • The only time a sign-and-trade is needed is if Dwight wants to go to a team that doesn’t have the cap room to offer him the contract he wants. For instance, if he wants to go to the Lakers this summer, the only way he can get there is by signing for the mid-level, or through a sign-and-trade....But we already know that two of Dwight’s preferred teams will have cap room. In other words, THERE IS NO BLUFF to call." • "The moral of this story is that not every team understands how things work, and it’s becoming clear that the Orlando Magic may not have as firm a grasp on their situation as they believe. Either that or they are deliberately putting out false information which wouldn’t be a stretch either."

The value of Ryan Anderson

7

Basketball Prospectus (Neil Paine): For the All-Star game if voters where only allowed to look at advanced statistics to decide the outcome, then Ryan Anderson would be a starter at one of the two forward spots. For forwards, Anderson is second (behind Lebron James) in five of the six most relevant statistical categories.
